Der Schweizerischer Solo- und Quartettwettbewerb SSQW zeichnete am Samstag die besten Solistinnen, Solisten und Quartette aus. Die Jungen haben den «Biss» trotz Corona nicht verloren. Dies bewiesen sie eindrücklich am Samstag am Final des Schweizerischen Solo- und Quartettwettbewerbs für Blechblas- und Perkussionsinstrumente SSQW. Solo-Champion unter den Blechbläsern wurde zum dritten Mal in Folge die Unterwalliser Cornettistin Mathilde Roh. Bei den Perkussionisten gewann der Luzerner Tom Müller den Titel. Das beste Quartett des SSQW 2021 ist «Shake Brass» aus dem Wallis (vollständige Ranglisten siehe untenstehende Links). Aufgrund der Coronapandemie wurde das Final aus der Eventfabrik in Bern per Video-Livestream übertragen. Das Video ist online immer noch abrufbar.

Digilounge Digital | Online Diskussion [19.11.2020] Im Rahmen der Diskussionsreihe #digiloglounge sprechen unsere ForscherInnen Laura Schelenz und Regina Ammicht Quinn mit Sabine Faller über die Problematik ungerechter Algorithmen. Unsere Gesellschaft ist geprägt von Strukturen der Ungleichheit. Ob Mann oder Frau, jung oder alt, West oder Ost, Stadt oder Land – unsere alltägliche Realität kann sich teils erheblich voneinander unterscheiden. Das hängt davon ab, welchen strukturellen Vor- und Nachteilen wir jeweils ausgesetzt sind. Strukturelle Ungleichheiten sind in unseren politischen und sozialen Institutionen eingeschrieben. Sie führen zu einer ungleichen und ungerechten Behandlung verschiedener sozialer Gruppen. Dies ist zum Beispiel der Fall bei Rassismus oder (Hetero)Sexismus. Zunehmend setzt sich die Wissenschaft mit dem Problem auseinander, wie strukturelle Ungleichheiten bewusst oder unbewusst in moderne Technologien eingeschrieben werden. Technik kann sogar mitunter die strukturelle Diskriminierung von bestimmten Gruppen verstärken. Insbesondere betroffen sind Menschen, die ohnehin in der Gesellschaft marginalisiert werden. Dies hat mit der Entwicklung von Algorithmen zu tun. Algorithmische Systeme sind Computermodelle, die anhand von Datensätzen trainiert werden, eine bestimmte Aufgabe zu lösen. Häufig verfügen diese Datensätze selbst über Verzerrungen, zum Beispiel indem sie über einen hohen Anteil von Daten weißer Menschen verfügen, aber nur über einen geringen Anteil von Informationen über Menschen mit dunkler Hautfarbe. Es gibt aber auch persönliche Annahmen und Vorurteile, die Entwickler-Teams dazu motivieren, Technik »für« bestimmte Personengruppen zu designen. Dabei werden die Bedürfnisse von weniger beachteten Gruppen vernachlässigt. Dieser Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit struktureller Diskriminierung durch Technik. Er diskutiert einige Fallbeispiele, unter anderem die Diskriminierung von schwarzen Frauen durch Gesichtserkennungs-Software oder die Diskriminierung von Transgender bei der Sicherheitskontrolle am Flughafen. Dabei werden größere Zusammenhänge der heutigen Technikentwicklung deutlich. Der Vortrag nimmt Bezug auf die Black Lives Matter Bewegung in den USA und diskutiert ihre Relevanz im Kontext des Themas. Es werden Ansätze für eine gerechtere Technikentwicklung vorgestellt, wie beispielsweise die des Netzwerks »Design Justice«. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der #digiloglounge-Gesprächsreihe. Einmal im Monat geben ExpertInnen von digilog@bw einen Einblick in ihre digitalen Forschungsthemen und beantworten Fragen im Video-Livestream! Der komplette Lockdown der Hochsee-Kreuzfahrt ist vorbei. Am 16. Juni ist die Finnmarken von Bergen aus zum ersten Mal wieder mit Passagieren an Bord in See gestochen. Daniel Skjeldam, CEO von Hurtigruten, war an Bord und hat in einer ausführlichen Video-Pressekonferenz vom Beginn der Reise berichtet. Cruisetricks.de war dabei, als die Finnmarken am zweiten Tag dieser Reise entlang der norwegischen Küste den Hafen von Alesund verließ und in den Geirangerfjord einfuhr – wenn auch nur per Livestream an heimischen PC. In ungewöhnlichen Zeiten müssen eben selbst wir einige Abstriche machen und von einer Reise berichten, auf der wir lediglich für knapp zwei Stunden per Video-Livestream dabei sind, statt direkte, eigene Erfahrungen an Bord zu sammeln. In dieser Podcast-Episode sprechen wir also über den Neustart der Hochsee-Kreuzfahrt auf der Finnmarken und die Pläne von Hurtigruten, insbesondere auch über die Neustartpläne mit der Fridtjof Nansen, die von 26. Juni an ab Hamburg die norwegische Küstenroute fährt. Wir sprechen außerdem über die ersten Erfahrungen mit den Infektionsschutzmaßnahmen an Bord und die Prognosen von CEO Daniel Skjeldam für die Zukunft der Kreuzfahrt, die er verstärkt bei kleinen Schiffen mit nachhaltigem Reisekonzept sieht. Und in eigener Sache gibt es einen kleinen Rückblick auf das Hörertreffen anlässlich der 250. Podcast-Episode, die in der Coronakrise ebenfalls online per Zoom stattfand.

Geoff Cook is a serial entrepreneur and public company CEO. He started his first company from a Harvard dorm and sold it for millions of dollars at age 24. He sold his second company for $100 million. He is currently the CEO and co-founder of The Meet Group (NASDAQ: MEET), a social dating and livestreaming company with a $400+ million market cap. He has spent $200 million in the last 3 years buying 4 companies, including most recently, Growlr, a dating app for gay bears. Geoff also runs the leading podcast player, Podcoin, and can drive thousands of listening hours and hundreds of subscribers to podcasts on which he appears. Geoff is the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award Winner for the Philadelphia Region. He is also a children's book author and a mentor at Princeton University's Keller Center. Wenn es nach dem Willen von Hardware-Herstellern geht, ist das Internet of Things, also die Anbindung von Alltagsgegenständen an das Internet, nicht mehr aufzuhalten. Schon heute sind einzelne Geräte überall miteinander vernetzt. Doch es gibt berechtigte Zweifel an Produkten, deren Herstellern ihre eigene Suppe kochen und die für die Updates ein Fremdwort sind. Und wenn es dann noch Daten abzugreifen gibt, die bei der Benutzung anfallen, sind endgültig Zweifel angesagt.
