"How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work and Your Life"
Neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki explains why zero anxiety isn't the goal. Anxiety is a feature of evolution, not a bug. That doesn't make it less uncomfortable, though. The good news is that we can harness it to our benefit, says Wendy Suzuki, a neuroscientist and the author of "Good Anxiety." By tapping into what she calls the six “superpowers” of anxiety, we can redirect these uncomfortable feelings into positive outcomes. Suzuki explains the neurological root of anxiety, including how the amygdala automatically activates when we are scared or stressed. To make matters worse, the prefrontal cortex — the rational, executive function center of the brain — shuts down when we need it most. But we're not powerless against our brain, and there are techniques we can use, like cognitive flexibility, to make our anxiety work for us. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go Deeper with Big Think: ►Become a Big Think Member Get exclusive access to full interviews, early access to new releases, Big Think merch and more ►Get Big Think+ for Business Guide, inspire and accelerate leaders at all levels of your company with the biggest minds in business -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Wendy Suzuki: Dr. Wendy A. Exercise gives your brain a “bubble bath of neurochemicals,” says Wendy Suzuki, a professor of neural science. Exercise can have surprisingly transformative impacts on the brain, according neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki. It has the power not only to boost mood and focus due to the increase in neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and noradrenaline, but also contributes to long-term brain health. Exercise stimulates the growth of new brain cells, particularly in the hippocampus, improving long-term memory and increasing its volume. Suzuki notes that you don't have to become a marathon runner to obtain these benefits — even just 10 minutes of walking per day can have noticeable benefits. It just takes a bit of willpower and experimentation. For this episode, let's revisit a Strategy Skills classic where we interview an amazing neuroscientist, Dr. Wendy Suzuki. Wendy and Michael discuss how much many of us compromise our cognition and what can be done to improve our performance. You may be able to brag about that 1 a.m. email but if you could monitor your level of cognition you would quickly see, "Oh my God! This is not good." What is it doing for your brain? What is it doing for your executive functions in the prefrontal cortex? Leadership is not just about managing a team and setting goals for them. This is such a one-dimensional definition of leadership. Leadership is whether you can be fulfilled by what you are doing, be able to get up in the morning, and not kill yourself in the process of meeting a goal that some shareholder wants you to meet. You have to distinguish between health and performance. You can be performing quite high but you can be doing some dangerous things to push those numbers up or to push that productivity up. Just because you are performing well does not mean you are doing it in a sustainable way. If you enjoy the conversation and would like to learn more from Wendy, we recommend you read her engaging and practical book "Healthy Brain, Happy Life: A Personal Program to Activate Your Brain and Do Everything Better." Every day, we get stuck in the same habits and routines. We go through the motions, but we don't put much thought into why we do what we do. It's not that we don't want to, it's just that our brain operates in one of two states - survival or executive. The latter is where hidden powers like critical thinking, creativity, and empathy come from - yet most people spend 70% of their time in the survival state due to things like stress, anxiety, and fear. This limits our growth as individuals and blocks us from unlocking our full potential. What causes us to stay in a survival state? Today we are talking with Dr. Eugene Choi about numerous reasons why this happens, and regardless of the cause, the important to recognize when you're stuck in this state so you can take steps to break out of it. When you start spending less time in the survival state and more time in an executive state, amazing things can happen. You become better equipped with tools like problem solving skills and creative thinking which allow you to reach higher levels of success both professionally and personally. In addition, being able to think critically allows us to navigate challenging situations with greater ease - making it easier for us reach our goals without getting sidetracked or overwhelmed by obstacles along the way. My biggest takeaways from todays episode are: Our brain operates either in a survival state (fear/threat) or an executive state (problem solving/decision making). Research shows that our brain is in the executive state only 30% of the time. The survival state is triggered by emotions like frustration, anxiety, anger, and fear. When you're in survival mode, your body is actually thinking it's about to die. This affects every part of our life - from our relationships to our health. Flight response is when we procrastinate or run away from people literally or figuratively. Freeze is when you are paralyzed in fear and trauma can lead to dissociation from the current moment. All feelings are just memories of past experiences and imposter syndrome might be caused by a memory of feeling like you don't matter The brain is easily fooled into thinking something is real when it may not be, which can lead to confirmation bias. Emotional pain can feel just as painful as physical pain, and the brain views it as a threat. What if feelings are actually your mind's way of trying to help you move back towards balance? Dr. Eugene K. Choi Pharm. D is a Transformational Mindset Coach and a board-certified clinical pharmacist that is on a mission to help talented heart-driven leaders operate at their highest levels of performance, intelligence, and communication. He firmly believes that by activating the powerful executive brain, it maximizes results not just in business leaders, but in humanity as a whole. “When we're in the survival state for 70% of our adult life, on average, it's fight, flight, freeze, fight, flight, freeze all the time,” explains Dr. Eugene Choi, Pharm D. BCPS, Filmmaker, Author, and Podcaster. A sought-after transformational mindset coach, Dr. Eugene is on a mission to help leaders operate at their highest levels. Today, Dr. Eugene shares the neuroscience behind decision-making and how to activate the executive part of our brains. Whether we suffer from habitual fight, flight, or freeze responses – every person is somewhat impaired due to our reactive nature. Although we may subconsciously believe we are consistently in danger and want to protect ourselves, we simultaneously hinder our ability to get what we want. By training our brains to remain calm and learning to step back and view our situations objectively, we can access more creativity and successful decision-making skills. The possibilities are endless when we can get ourselves out of survival mode. Learn more about how our minds process stress, common mentality mistakes of business leaders, and why we need to take ownership of our outside responses. Quotes • “Our brain is in this reactive mode without thinking. Not because your life is in danger, but because of the number of emotions we experience daily that are frankly uncomfortable.” (4:21-4:33 | Dr. Eugene) • “If we're in the survival state for more or less about 70% of our adult life, on average, it's fight, flight, freeze, fight, flight, freeze all the time.” (9:14-9:22 | Dr. Eugene) • “The good news is just how you can go to the gym and get stronger with your muscles, we can exercise our brains to improve and rewire the parts that are not serving us.” (18:36-18:47 | Dr. Eugene) • “Once you're willing, then you're willing to take ownership. And when you're willing to take ownership, you're willing to get yourself the very thing you need to get to where you need to go.” (21:21-21:34 | Dr. Eugene) • “When you enter an executive state, you're going to look at both the outside and inside. But in survival mode, you're only stuck on the outside, and that's disempowering.” (25:59-26:06 | Dr. Eugene) FREE TRAINING: How to Activate Your Brain's Superpowers A science-backed approach to discover your passion, find your purpose and transform your life:https://destinyhacks.co/ Connect with Dr. Eugene Choi Website: https://destinyhacks.co/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eugenekchoi/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eugenekchoi/ ==== Thank You For Listening! How can you use movement to activate your brain for greater mental strength, energy, flexibility, and clarity? One of the best ways to enhance learning is by disrupting the monotonous drag of long study sessions and rote memorization. Moving your body is one way to help enhance focus and give your brain an extra energy burst. But what if there were specific movements you could utilize to unlock your full learning potential and give you even better results? I'm thrilled to have Anat Baniel on our show today to discuss this topic. Anat is a clinical psychologist, dancer, and best-selling author of Kids Beyond Limits: The Anat Baniel Method for Awakening the Brain and Transforming the Life of Your Child With Special Needs and Move Into Life: Neuromovement for Lifelong Vitality. She's here to talk about why movement is the brain's language and how to utilize movement as a mechanism to empower learning and create possibilities in your life. You've heard me say it before: as the body moves, the brain grooves. But it isn't about movement alone. Listen in as Anat explains the essentials of movement that will help align your body and brain to improve your learning and your life. *** Do you want to stay up to date with every new episode and get my brand new Kwik Brain Accelerator Program? Dr Suzuki is a professor of neural science and psychology at the New York University's Center for Neural Science, and the author of “Healthy Brain, Happy Life: A Personal Program to to Activate Your Brain and Do Everything Better” and her newest book, “Good Anxiety: Harnessing the Power of the Most Misunderstood Emotion.” Anxiety is typically something we try to avoid, but why do we avoid it, what does science tell us about anxiety, and how can we use anxiety to our advantage? What to Listen For Introduction – 2:35 What is good anxiety and how do you recognize when anxiety is good or bad for you? How do you recognize when the anxiety you're experiencing is bad enough that you should seek help? What behaviors might you be exhibiting that make your anxiety worse? Relationships and their impact on our anxiety – 11:32 How do your relationships impact your anxiety and what can you do to mitigate that impact? What simple exercise can you do anywhere to get a handle on your everyday anxiety? How can you use small rituals and habits to stop your anxiety from ruining your daily activities and responsibilities? Conquering anxiety – 27:12 What can you do if your anxiety is stopping you from falling asleep at night? What simple mental exercises can you use to diffuse your anxiety so it doesn't have such a strong influence on your life? How can you prepare for social events so your anxiety doesn't ruin the event for you? Managing anxiety in loved ones – 39:30 What can you do as parents if you are concerned about anxiety in your children? What do many of us do to make our anxiety worse when we believe it's actually making our anxiety better? We tend to place anxiety into a category of emotions we try to avoid. While you can experience anxiety that is so bad it warrants professional help, the anxiety most of us deal with on a daily basis can be embraced for what it can teach us about ourselves and the people around us. If you want to better manage your anxiety, start by looking at it from a place of curiosity and creativity. Next time you're experiencing anxiety, take a moment to ask yourself where the anxiety is coming from. The more you can look at your anxiety objectively, the faster it will subside and be manageable. If you’re asking which information protection platform to choose, that’s not deep enough. It’s intellectually lazy. Too often, we make technology decisions instead of programmatic decisions. In a recent episode in our Inside Line on Information Protection series, we chatted with cybersecurity executive Jeremy Wittkop about reimagining DLP as a method for protecting people first. We also talked about: Why technology solutions don’t help CSOs discuss data protection Multilingual services, behavioral analytics, and resource distribution IT budgets and security budgets are not the same Genuinely measuring and analyzing risk Resources we mentioned during the podcast: Activate Your Brain by Scott G. Knowing that trust helps release oxytocin which is good for our brains, who can you give a note of appreciation to today, or surprise with a gift? How did you feel when we talked about the wedding story, where the author and his brother wrestled to the point one hurt the other to win? In the same way, are you currently in a position where you are hurting other people to get what you want? If you’re not doing anything right now, even standing up to take walks around the block outside are better than nothing.Always, Always Remember,You've got this!-J.D. Elliott
Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction Items: Shoremates, we covered a lot, in-depth today. The only action item would be to relisten to this episode and take notes for things you can do. Sleep is vital to living full, complete lives. Remember, we were not born to work, pay bills, and die. What is the point of giving your all at work, and coming home and just hating life and not being present for the ones you love.Always, Always Remember,You've got this!-J.D. Elliott
Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction Items: for ease of reference these are listed in the show notes as well. Take some time and write down everything that is stressing you out, no matter how small. A few examples may include an upcoming performance review, unanswered emails, or even that you need to do an oil change on your car. Then, circle the ones that actually do need your immediate attention. Focus on those, and you’ll be able to do the rest during moments you feel inspired to get it done.If you ever find yourself in a stressful situation, remind yourself that a little bit of stress is good. If you find you’re getting close to a breaking point, walk away, breathe deeply a few times and do what you need to do to reset.Music is impactful in everything we do. Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction Items Take some time and write down everything you need to get done that has been nagging at you. Literally everything. This is also referred to as a brain dump. Now, decide on just one task you’ll do each day and cross it off. If you want to do more, go for it, but have the goal to be just one at the minimum. With what you are currently doing, what is the big why that you’re working towards. Now, what is the how. What are the systems you have in place to ensure you’re accomplishing the why. This could be as simple as going to work and putting money away in a 401k.I’m going to repeat the last portion of Phyllis’ words on growth before she died from cancer. "But in the end, I see that growth is not so much about adding on as it Is about letting go. That’s when you really soar, when you let go of obstacles in your life so that you can meet your true self again.” What in life do you need to let go of. Think and write down all you do, and be true with yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 how important they are. Then, see if you’re acting in accordance with your priority list. If not, it may be time to trim some things down. Always, Always Remember,You've got this!-J.D. Elliott
Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction ItemsLook at your environment, get a piece of paper, and write down everything that distracts you throughout the day. Then, find a way to mitigate as much as possible.Decide to try and do one thing at a time. If you have a lot on your plate. Write down the priority order of everything you need to do, and get one thing done at a time slowly going down the list. If this method works well for you, then write down the priority order the night before. If you realize you’re getting tired, hold off on any activities that require critical thinking and deliberation. Take a break, get some healthy food and drink water without checking your phone and getting sucked into it, then get back to it and notice the positive difference. Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction ItemsIf you struggle with confidence, think about the one thing you want to accomplish but are scared to do so. Now, think about the worst case scenario that could happen. Then, on a scale of 1 - 100 ask yourself what the likelihood of each thing happening is. Now that you’ve written down the worst case scenario, let’s apply what we learned from the Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. Create a game plan for exactly what you’ll do if those worst case scenarios will happen, and write them down. While I was an officer in the Navy, we would brainstorm these, and then write down an action plan called pre planned responses from these and then run drills until we could do them from memory. If you want to practice willpower, try to do a task without having your phone nearby and it on airplane mode. The results may surprise you.Always, Always Remember,You've got this!-J.D. Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction ItemsWhat is the no kidding, honest to goodness definition of success for you in your life? Try to be as specific as possible. From here, ask yourself how much it would realistically cost to have that, and I encourage you to be creative here. For example, if a goal is to have a beach house, one thing you may do is ask yourself how much time you would spend there, get a condo, and rent it out for the times you’re not there. After you’re done with this, ask yourself what actions you need to take this year, this quarter, this month, and this day in order for it to happen. Shoremates, this will take time if you’re being truthful with yourself, but I guarantee the amount of clarity and freedom you’ll feel from identifying it and moving towards it are worthy every second of your time.If you have a partner, or are in a relationship, ask them to do the exact same thing. One way that bitterness may rise in relationships or marriages is if one of the partners feels like they’re sacrificing their dreams for the other partner. By being clear with each other, you’ll be able to brainstorm how both dreams are compatible, which will help strengthen your relationship. What is one new thing you resolve to try today and this week to help you get closer to your goal that you came up with in action item number 1. Always, Always Remember,You've got this!-J.D. Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Chapters 2-4 in Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction ItemsThink about everything you regularly do in life. Are you doing these things to move towards a goal, or to move away from an undesired consequence. If you are doing things to try and avoid a consequence, just like the gym example how can you reframe what you’re doing to move towards a goal? When you’re talking with others, try and avoid telling them what they should and should not do. Hey Shoremates!Welcome to Chapter 1 and the beginning of Chapter 2 in Activate Your Brain: How Understanding Your Brain Can Improve Your Work — and your life by Scott G. HalfordAction ItemsNow that we understand the C and X systems, ask yourself how much time is spent in the C system over the X system. As a reminder, the x system is reflexive and the c system is reflective. How can you spend more time in the C system?Next time you’re feeling highly emotional and ready to explode, take a few deep breaths, count to 10, and if you can excuse yourself for a moment, go take a brief walk without any electronics. Notice how differently you’ll react when you come back after having a few moments to calm down.Avoid making any important decisions when you are tired. Being in the analytical C system takes a lot of energy, and making emotional decisions is almost always a recipe for disaster. Always, Always Remember,You've got this!-J.D. ElliottPS Love tea? This is part 2 of my chat with Dr. Wendy Suzuki. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: What meditation does to the brain Key Takeaways: It has been discovered that one of the things that exercise does for the brain is hippocampal neurogenesis. As such, the longevity of memory can be made possible through exercise and physical activity. Hippocampal plaques and tangles are what causes Alzheimer’s and dementia. Sleep is essential for healthy brain functioning. It can’t be emphasized enough how critical good, normal sleep and regular normal sleep is for your brain. One of the most noticeable effects of exercise is on a person’s mood. You feel good and happy after a workout, and that is because physical activity stimulates the release of dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, endorphins, and enkephalins. A regular physical aerobic activity has been shown to be as effective as the most commonly-used antidepressant to treat major depressive disorder. Physical exercise also stimulates growth factors that help the brain grow and create connections or synapses. A key growth factor is known as Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which stimulates the birth of hippocampal neurons. Regular aerobic exercise also improves the circulatory system. It stimulates brand new blood vessels in the brain, called angiogenesis. The brain is the number user of oxygen in the entire body, and the more blood vessels you have, the better that that oxygenated blood can profuse the entire brain. As we age, we become more and more susceptible to strokes. The best thing to have in your brain if a blood vessel bursts are more blood vessels to help in your recovery. Regular walks three to five times a week have been shown to be effective in decreasing your chances of getting dementia by 30%. And if you are a high-fit woman in middle age, you are 90% less likely to get dementia when you’re older Action Steps: Practice meditation. Increase your personal connections. Test your brain! Sign up at Wendy’s Website and take the cognitive tests once they’re available. Wendy said: “I consider sleep similar to exercise in the sense that it is two of the most healthy things that you can do for your brain. I think of what’s happening with exercise during the day as kind of providing this wonderful bubble bath of good neurochemicals and growth factors for your brain… And the sleep is kind of flushing all that good stuff down the drain and filling it up with nice, clean water.” Thanks for listening! Losing focus? Are you unable to concentrate fully? Do you feel like you are not reaching your full potential because you need clarity from brain fog? Well today is your lucky day! Here is some magical music that will solve all these problems and then some! How, you ask. Well these are Binaural Beats. According to MindValley blog, Binaural Beats are imaginary tones created in the brain when it is presented with two different frequencies at the same time. Since the state of your brain effects how well you perform activities, and process information. If you want to achieve a meditative state, get a better night's sleep, activate your body's natural healing processes or become more focused and productive, you simply need to change the state of your brain! And Binaural Beats does exactly that! So put your headphones on and start on this. I recommend doing this every morning when you are ready to start your work day! This is not only for those who work though :) There are a ton of other benefits that everyone can take advantage of! In this 68th and new episode of the Strategy Skills complimentary podcast, audio version, we introduce you to an amazing neuroscientist, Dr. Leadership is whether you can be fulfilled by what you are doing, be able to get up in the morning and not kill yourself in the process of meeting a goal that some shareholder wants you to meet. You have to distinguish between health and performance. You can be performing quite high but you can be doing some dangerous things to push those numbers up, or to push that productivity up. Just because you are performing well does not mean you are doing it in a sustainable way. If you enjoy the conversation and would like to learn more from Wendy, we recommend you read her engaging and practical book "Healthy Brain, Happy Life: A Personal Program to Activate Your Brain and Do Everything Better." You may have seen her work on The Gap T-shirts, Pepsi cans, VISA billboards, Microsoft and Target ads, as well as on the book covers of Penguin, Scholastic, DC Comics, and on the pages of NY Times, Time, Rolling Stone, New Yorker and in many other publications over last ten years. If you really want to do something, then do it. -How something that you go through that doesn't make sense at the moment sometimes makes perfect sense five years later when you look back at it. -How hindsight can make you see that you loved something, hated something, or anything in between, but either is better than never having done it. -There are people in your life that will try to discourage you to try to help you, but this is the point where you know where you see it clearly as to whether or not it is something you have to do. -How the drawing portion of her work is like meditation. She gets in the zone and can just focus. -How there is often too much work and often not enough work and how to deal with the in-between. -How taking her dog for a walk and coming back fresh helps to re-motivate her when she is in a block. -The importance of sleep when you want to be creative. -How traveling to new places inspires her the most and also makes time slow down a bit. -How routine makes days and years go so much faster. Yuko's Final Push is to TRUST YOUR INTUITION! Quotes: "I always get enough sleep." "You can't just keep creating. Output comes from input. The biggest one is going to places I haven't been."
