Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

If you're not radically generous, you're a thief. The Bible is full of this teaching. If the money you have was yours and you're not generous with it, you're just being stingy; but if the money is somebody else's and you're not generous with it as the owner directs, it's robbery. The Bible says your attitude toward your wealth and your possessions is not an incidental or peripheral or optional issue. It's at the very heart of what it is to be a Christian. A Christian says the money you have is yours to enjoy and take care of as a trustee, but you must give it generously as God directs. James 2 says real faith inevitably leads to three characteristics: 1) it's radically generous, 2) it's radically gracious, and 3) it's radically practical. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on January 14, 1990. Series: Ten Commandments 1989. Scripture: James 2:1-17. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. In this episode, we discuss the nature of God, “who” God is, beginning with God the Father. Our reading explains how the Creed begins with God the Father because he is the first Divine Person of the most Holy Trinity. God is one Divine Being made up of three persons, and his identity is a deep mystery. Fr. Mike explains that God is a single ‘what' made up of three ‘who's.' Despite this mystery, God is not an anonymous force. He has revealed himself to us by making his name known to us, and he has thus made himself accessible. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 198-204. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. A Prayer for Gratitude When Life Feels Hard

    Your Daily Prayer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2026 7:33 Transcription Available

Gratitude can feel impossible when life is painful. When loss is loud, when circumstances feel unfair, and when your heart is carrying more than it can hold, “be thankful” can sound like an unreachable goal. This devotional doesn’t minimize that reality—it starts in the middle of it. The author describes sitting beside her terminally ill daughter on a beautiful day she couldn’t enjoy outside, and the ache of watching someone you love miss what feels so simple. In that raw moment, her prayer was honest—more like a complaint than praise. But then the focus shifts to a quiet gift: sunshine through the window. God didn’t change the circumstance in an instant, but He brought light into the room. That small detail became a turning point, not because it erased the grief, but because it revealed God’s kindness in the middle of it. When we’re overwhelmed by what we can’t have, we can miss what God is still giving—His presence, a moment of peace, the gift of being together, strength when we’re weak, and reminders of His care that show up in unexpected ways. The devotional connects this to Nehemiah, where God’s people were rebuilding under pressure and threat. Their situation wasn’t easy or resolved—but they still stopped to give thanks and celebrate with joy. Their worship wasn’t based on perfect conditions. It was rooted in God’s faithfulness. And the line that echoes through the entire devotional is this: God turns curses into blessings. That “however” is a holy interruption—reminding us that even when we see only hardship, God is still working redemption. Gratitude, then, isn’t about forcing cheerful feelings. It’s about anchoring your heart in who God is. Even if your thanks is weak and trembling, it still matters—because the God you’re thanking is steady, present, and faithful. And even in the darkest rooms, He still sends light through windows you didn’t know were there. Main Takeaways Gratitude isn’t denial of pain; it’s noticing God’s presence within it. It’s easy to fixate on what’s missing and miss the gifts God is still giving. God can bring light into dark places, even when circumstances don’t change right away. Thanksgiving doesn’t require perfect conditions—it’s rooted in God’s faithfulness. God is able to turn curses into blessings, even when we can’t see how yet. Today’s Bible Verse "The leaders of the Levites were... to give thanks, according to the commands of David the man of God... At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out... to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving... The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away." - Nehemiah 12:24, 27, 43 (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing in Nehemiah 13:2b). Your Daily Prayer Here is a brief excerpt from today’s prayer: “Turn my whispered complaints into weak but willing praise… Turn my curse into a blessing, as only You can.” You can listen to the full prayer here or read the devotional at the links below. A Prayer for Determination When You Feel Depleted

    Your Daily Prayer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2026 7:39 Transcription Available

There are seasons when you feel completely spent—yet life still demands more. The devotional opens in that familiar space: deadlines piling up, responsibilities pressing in, and exhaustion that doesn’t pause just because you need rest. The author describes hitting the wall after a full summer of parenting and work demands, realizing that even with the desire to recover, life sometimes doesn’t offer the extra cushion of time or energy we wish we had. When you’re depleted, determination can feel like it’s run out—and yet you still need strength to keep going. That’s where the devotional invites a critical shift: stop and ask God what He says about your predicament. Because we often carry the pressure alone, forgetting that God doesn’t just see our weakness—He meets us in it. The anchor word here is grace. Not grace as a vague idea, but God’s always-available, mercy-filled help that’s enough for the moment you’re in. 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us that God’s power is displayed most clearly when we’re weak, not when we’re performing at our best. Instead of trying to manufacture determination through sheer effort, this devotional points us to receiving. Receiving grace. Receiving God’s presence. Receiving the freedom to release unrealistic expectations and rest in the truth that God’s love isn’t dependent on what we accomplish. Grace doesn’t remove every responsibility, but it changes the weight of them. It replaces frantic striving with steady strength, offering refreshment to your soul and the empowering presence of Christ to carry you through what’s in front of you. If you’re worn down today, the encouragement is simple: God’s grace is sufficient for you too. It will restore you, replenish you, and strengthen you—both for the rest you need and the next step you’re called to take. Main Takeaways Depletion doesn’t always come with a break—sometimes responsibilities keep pressing in. God invites you to bring your weakness to Him instead of carrying pressure alone. Grace is not just comfort; it is God’s sufficient strength made available in weakness. God’s power shows up most clearly when you stop striving and start receiving. Rest and determination can both flow from the same source: God’s restoring grace. Today’s Bible Verse But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. - 2 Corinthians 12:9 Your Daily Prayer Here is a brief excerpt from today’s prayer: “Your free gift of grace comforts my depleted soul and refreshes my wearying spirit… Thank you for your restoring grace and your sufficient strength.” You can listen to the full prayer here or read the devotional at the links below. What happens when your identity feels shaky—when approval, comparison, insecurity, or success starts to define who you are? In this episode, Candace sits down with Madi for a meaningful conversation about identity and the question at the center of so many struggles: What is most true about who you are?   Madi shares the story behind UNITE, the student movement that began with her mom's heartbreak over what college students were carrying in silence, and her decision to pray, walk the Auburn campus, and trust God with what felt impossible. What started as a simple act of obedience became an “only God” story: thousands gathering, spontaneous baptisms, and a ripple effect that spread to campuses hungry for hope. From there, the conversation turns deeply personal and practical. Candace and Madi respond to Jessie's listener question about staying polite when your social battery is drained, offering a reframing of boundaries as kindness: honesty, clarity, and love. Madi shares a startling story from the first night of her marriage: a scammer stole some credit card info… yikes!  Together, they unpack what it actually means to “find your identity in Christ,” starting in Genesis with the image of God, and using a memorable analogy: the moon doesn't create light, it reflects it. They also talk candidly about how easy it is to root identity in work, validation, and recognition. Candace shares a defining moment from her early adulthood that revealed how much worth she had unknowingly attached to being “somebody,” and how discovering herself as a child of God changed everything, including how she approached acting, platform, and success. This episode closes with a listener question from Christina, who shares deep insecurity and self-loathing about the way she looks. Candace responds with compassion and scripture, reminding her that feelings may be real, but that God's truth is steady. If you've ever wondered who you are beneath the roles you play, or felt pulled into people-pleasing, comparison, or shame, this episode is a grounding reminder: identity rooted in Jesus is unshakable.  For more encouragement, grab the free Dare To Be True guide at candace.com, where you'll also find a link to Madi's book, Dare To Be True. A growing hunger for purpose and meaning among young men has left many susceptible to secular influencers who offer fragmented truths apart from Christ. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar discuss how the church must respond with intentional discipleship, presence, and bold engagement to guide this generation toward genuine faith. They emphasize that true masculinity, authority, and purpose are found not in cultural substitutes or political agendas, but in a life rooted in Christ. The guys highlight the importance of investing in relationships, speaking life into young men, and modeling godly leadership both in the church and at home. Through relational investment, family devotion, and faithful exhortation, believers can impact young men and set them on a path of lasting transformation that honors God and shapes future generations. They call the church to rise above cultural distraction, prioritize gospel-centered mentorship, and be unwavering in pointing this generation to the truth and life found only in Jesus.Send us a textThanks for listening! Stefan Molyneux takes on objections to Universally Preferable Behavior as a moral framework. He pushes back against the idea that morality stands on its own, stressing the need for clear definitions in any philosophical talk. When it comes to tying morality to gods or divine sources, he points out that fuzzy claims don't hold up as real arguments. Molyneux questions whether morality can just be about chasing the good, the true, and the beautiful, pulling in examples from religious texts to show the inconsistencies there. He looks back at how Christian morality has fallen short over time and doubts whether theocratic setups really deliver on ethics. In the end, he calls for a straightforward grasp of morality and what UPB means in practice, urging people to check their own biases and lean on real-world evidence in these discussions.Email from listener:UPB reduces down to "Morality is being". Or "By the act of living, you prefer life". Or Universal Preference for Being. But even without beings, morality still exists. So morality is God based, and is the rational pursuit of, participation in, and defense of the Good, the True, and the Beautiful (with evil being precisely whatever actively undermines or destroys those ends). Plato would agree. Jesus said, to love God with all your mind heart soul and strength, and love others as yourself, and the whole of the law rests on these two principles. It means to fight for the Good, the True, and the Beautiful - for order. Of course, this can only be done through rationality and power. So, the Good must take the power back. This cannot be done through secular materialism which only reduces to hedonism. People that hear their conscience seek rationality and God more than anything else, because everything else is temporary. However, Christianity displays false theories. The biggest one is the idea that an innocent person needed to suffer and be sacrificed for evils committed by everyone else. God would never require this because God is 100% good. The reality is that Jesus needed to be killed and resurrected so that His story would be way bigger and spread Goodness to way more people, and last forever. So, he did die for sins in that sense alone, so that more people would hear His story and turn away from sin. There is no other practical moral framework to turn to. Philosophy alone is rational, but it does not ground morality the same way God does. Actually, rationality requires one to accept God. Without God, people literally have absolutely no reason to be moral at all. And Deism's impersonal God doesn't connect with people. Christianity was working until the Jews brainwashed society and the Church and destroyed its influence on society. Notwithstanding its misinterpretations, Christianity appears to be the only effective thing people can actually believe in and follow. And Neitzche would say the will to power is too potent for UPB to control. However, Christianity at least affords a will to power of the True, the Beautiful, and the Good. Jesus whipped the little bastards in the Temple. That needs to come back, because that is all the little bastards can understand.Someone wants steak for dinner and the other person doesn't, or go hungry forever, that does not make the steak guy forcing the other to eat the steak immoral. UPB is a logical construction that fails in the real world, and honestly, not even to be a jerk, but literally no one at all gives the slightest fuck about it. Sorry for the language. And I really do appreciate your efforts and all your good works. And sure, UPB is a true logical construction, but people are irrational and will never be rational. And that is why the real world philosophy is 100% might makes right. And this is why Christianity must be forced down their throats until the world is functional again. Irrational people only understand force, and Christianity is the valid, justified, moral, virtuous, reason and purpose of true physical force against irrational and evil people. There is an attempt at logic in UPB, and it sort of works, but not really. Morality already existed before Mankind, and UPB only points out the effects of immorality, it does not define morality. And lastly, to include with all the arguments I have made against UPB. I will just say that bottom line, UPB is merely a survival instinct desire and not the creation of morality. Every person would agree that they don't want to be attacked or stolen from, simply because they want to live and survive, so that would make that universally preferable behavior. However, because this is all survival instinct based, as soon as a person sees a chance to steal or attack, that best serves their own survival, they will immediately not care the slightest about UPB because they are about their own survival over everyone else's. UPB is matter-based biologically-based morality, and simply does not hold up, just like all the other secular ethical frameworks before it - they all failed, and all secular ethical frameworks will always fail. This is because God-based, soul-based morality is the only Truth, as proven at dynamicentity.comGET FREEDOMAIN MERCH! https://shop.freedomain.com/SUBSCRIBE TO ME ON X! https://x.com/StefanMolyneuxFollow me on Youtube! https://www.youtube.com/@freedomain1GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025

A Prayer to Love Your Difficult Neighbor

Love is one of the most familiar words in Scripture—and one of the most challenging to live out. Jesus summed up God’s greatest commandments with a simple directive: love God fully, and love your neighbor as yourself. It sounds straightforward, but the devotional reminds us that biblical love isn’t driven by convenience, comfort, or emotion. It’s a choice rooted in humble obedience, and it often runs directly against the way the world defines love. Loving your neighbor feels easier when your neighbor is kind, friendly, and considerate. But what about the difficult ones—the person who seems cold, critical, loud, inconsiderate, or perpetually unpleasant? This devotional gently confronts that reality and turns the mirror back toward us: sometimes we are difficult to love too. And sometimes our struggle to love others is connected to an even deeper struggle—forgetting what God says about us, and failing to receive His love and truth in a way that shapes how we see ourselves. The devotional emphasizes that loving our neighbor flows from loving God first. When we seek Him with our whole heart, He steadies our identity and reminds us of what is true: we are made with intention, set apart, loved, forgiven, and made new in Christ. That truth reshapes our internal posture—reducing insecurity, comparison, harsh judgment, and self-protection. And from that renewed place, we’re better equipped to treat others with patience, kindness, humility, and compassion. Loving a difficult neighbor doesn’t mean excusing harmful behavior or ignoring real boundaries. It means choosing to see them through the lens of mercy and grace, asking God to revive love in us, and responding in a way that honors Him. When we stay tuned to God’s voice and anchored in His love, we can love others—not because they deserve it, but because we’re reflecting the love we’ve received. Main Takeaways Biblical love is a choice rooted in obedience, not shifting feelings or convenience. Loving difficult people starts with loving God first and letting Him shape your heart. Remembering your identity in Christ helps you love others with more patience and humility. “Love your neighbor as yourself” invites both self-reflection and compassion for others. God can revive love in you so you can respond with mercy, grace, and sincerity. Today’s Bible Verse “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” - Mark 12:30-31 Your Daily Prayer Here is a brief excerpt from today’s prayer: “Align my heart to Your will and way so that I may choose to love others with a tender heart of kindness, compassion, and sincerity.” You listen to the full prayer here or read the devotional at the links below.
