On Thursday, the House passed President Trump's 'big, beautiful bill,' securing a major legislative win for the administration. The bill permanently extends the President's 2017 tax cuts, slashes spending on Medicaid and food assistance, and boosts funding for the military and border. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the second study session on Gregg Olsen's If You Loving You Is Wrong, which investigates the scandalous, tragic arrangement between White Seattle schoolteacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her 12-year-old non-white student, Vili Fualaau. Gus T. was not a Seattle resident at the time of this criminal disgrace. When speaking with Neely Fuller Jr. many years ago about why it's incorrect for White people to engage in sexual activity with non-white people, he cited the Letourneau case. At the time, Gus shamelessly admitted being ignorant about this case. Fuller paused briefly before asking Gus to confirm that he was dialing from Seattle's 206 area code. Chatting all the way from Washington, D.C., Fuller knew all the tacky details of this case and how it corroborates his counter-racist code, which prohibits so-called interracial hanky panky until there's no more Racism. Also, Fuller emphasized how White people exploit the childlike state of non-white people/Victims of Racism in these sexual arrangements. Last week, Olsen told us of Mary Kay's California upbringing which included her father John Schmitz's political work for "right wing," "ultraconservative" causes. Her family's connections to the John Birch Society, a notoriously Racist organization, further corroborated Gus's belief that Letourneau was a cunning Race Soldier who deliberately selected a vulnerable non-white child to rape. The first installment of Olsen's book, which details the police stopping Mary Kay and 12-year-old Vili Fualaau during a 1am sexual rendezvous, reminded Gus of Jeffrey Dahmer's stealth when questioned by Milwaukee police officers who could have save the life of 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone. #MaryKTime INVEST in The C.O.W.S. - https://cash.app/$TheCOWS #TheCOWS16Years CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#
Episode Summary: In this episode, Heather “Lucky” Penney talks to Lt. Gen. David Deptula, USAF (Ret.), Charles Galbreath, Todd “Sledge” Harmer, Anthony “Lazer” Lazarski, JV Venable, and Jeff Rowlison about the top defense issues this month in Washington, D.C. and beyond. Our team digs into newly released FY26 budget details. There are some key issues to track for both the Air Force and Space Force. Seeking to retire 340 aircraft, while only procuring 76 is a high-risk strategy. Will Congress buy into it? Putting so much of the Space Force's budget in reconciliation is proving contentious. They also explore comments by DARPA leadership regarding the future of stealth and discuss whether it's smart to kill the E-7. We wrap with an extensive conversation regarding readiness: the numbers are bleak. It's July 4th! And we're celebrating by pretending it's July 5th. Hey, anything to get another day closer to the end of the Trump regime! But to be more precise about it, we're pretending it's July 5, 2019. Why? Well, July 5, 2024 wasn't a particularly uplifting moment in time for us. But the day after Trump's first attempt at a Washington, DC “military parade?” That's entertainment! So we're re-running the July 5, 2019 episode, which Scott Anderson originally summarized this way: But… Did. They. Get. Off? The rain was almost… almost like a “sign” from above that yesterday's greatest show in history would be the hugest lesson in irony. In that, it did not disappoint. David Waldman takes us through Donald Trump's history lesson on ramming the ramparts at airports during the Revolution. If you think Trump sees history in a strange way, wait until you hear how he sees himself. Profile in courage Donald Trump wishes he could be the good person he really is inside... it's just that you provoke him so. An open letter to the director of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum states why we again need to say Never Again. Trump tries to come up with a way to rig the Census that someone will believe, but why bother when lies work so well? Oregon's governor uses her executive powers for good. Cheese and whiskey are targeted in the US's latest proposed tariffs on EU, as the Jim Beam bourbon warehouse is allowed to burn down to keep from polluting the water. What will the Gop do without the NRA? The Indian government already has a plan in place for dealing with Ivanka Trump-like intrusion. To mark Independence Day, Big Books and Bold Ideas is airing an encore presentation of Kerri Miller's conversation with historian Patrick O'Donnell about his 2024 book, “The Unvanquished.”The Civil War is remembered for its sweeping battles: Gettysburg, Atlanta, Antietam. Less known are the small troops of men, enlisted by both sides, to fight far from the battlefields. These ruthless soldiers relied on stealth to sneak behind enemy lines — often wearing their opponent's uniform — and destroyed supply lines, assassinated military officials and gathered critical information.Today, we know this kind of warfare as shadow ops — which is a specialty of military historian Patrick K. O'Donnell. A roadside marker he happened to see in rural Virginia ignited years of research into the Civil War-era special forces who were tasked by President Lincoln to undertake spy operations and secrete missions against Confederate units. This week, he joined MPR News host Kerri Miller on Big Books and Bold ideas to talk about his book, “The Unvanquished,” which masterfully tells the story of this forgotten chapter of history.Guest:Patrick K. O'Donnell is a bestselling military historian and an expert on elite units. He is the author of thirteen books, including “The Indispensables,” “The Unknowns” and “Washington's Immortals.” His new book is “The Unvanquished.”Subscribe to Big Books and Bold Ideas with Kerri Miller on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, RSS or anywhere you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Thread newsletter for the latest book and author news and must-read recommendations.

In this riveting conversation with Michael Hichborn of the Lepanto Institute, we journey deep into the heart of a crisis unfolding in the Church.Michael shares his daring undercover mission at the Association of United States Catholic Priests (AUSCP) conference in San Antonio, where he discovered priests openly advocating for women's ordination, LGBT acceptance, and "priestless parishes"—all while enjoying support from prominent bishops and cardinals. His firsthand account includes a surprising encounter with a gay priest at the hotel bar and the shocking moment when his cover was blown. The conversation shifts to a profound examination of how Catholic worship has evolved—or deteriorated—since Vatican II. Though the liturgy was developed over two millennia, recent decades have seen a Protestantization of Catholic worship that has stripped away the sacred elements that once defined it. As Michael powerfully argues, "Once you get rid of the customary life of the church, now you have to replace it with something else." This liturgical crisis connects directly to the moral and doctrinal confusion we see today, including bishops who remove kneelers to discourage traditional postures of reverence. We explore the miraculous shrine of Las Lajas in Colombia, where an unexplainable image appears three feet deep within solid rock—a powerful example of how authentic Catholic faith inspires cultural greatness. As modern civilization abandons its Christian foundations, these miracles serve as reminders that "if these shall hold their peace, stones will cry out."Whether you're concerned about the direction of the Church, fascinated by the intersection of faith and culture, or simply seeking clarity amid confusion, this episode offers profound insights into reclaiming authentic Catholic identity in a time of unprecedented challenges. In its Greek root, Mentos means “intent, purpose, spirit and passion.” It was with intent, purpose and passion that this special episode came to life. It is a rare occasion when one can get together with their mentor, and their mentor's mentor for a conversation anchored in three generations of mentorship, leadership and friendship. This is one of those conversations. My special guest, the mentor of my mentor is Admiral Bob Inman. I flew to Austin to meet up with him in person and record this incredible testimony of history and leadership and lifelong service. Admiral Inman was born in April 1931 in East Texas and went on to become a highly decorated United States Navy Officer and Intelligence Leader. His career and service had a profound impact on America's national security architecture. During his 31-year military career that spanned the world and included some of the most sensitive national security posts in the Government, the Admiral earned a bipartisan reputation as one of the Nation's finest intelligence officers of a generation. Journalists used to refer to him as “simply one of the smartest people ever to come out of Washington or anywhere.” Regarded as a superstar in the intelligence community he grew his career in Naval Intelligence serving on carriers, cruisers and destroyers…not to mention the hallowed halls of the Pentagon. The Admiral went on to serve as the Director of Naval Intelligence, Vice Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and Director of the National Security Agency. He was nominated to be Deputy Director of Central Intelligence and served in that role until his resignation in 1982. It was during that time Admiral Inman became the first naval intelligence specialist to earn the rank of 4 Star Admiral. Admiral Inman went on to serve on numerous boards including CalTech's Board of Trustees and held the LBJ Centennial Chart in National Policy at the University of Texas at Austin Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. In every capacity the Admiral has always focused on mentorship and leadership and sharing wisdom for the next generation. When we sat down to speak with the Admiral he had recently celebrated 67 years of marriage with his dear wife. At 94 years of age he is still motivated by selfless service and paying it forward to the next generations of leaders. This conversation counts as one of those gifts. So, sit back and listen to this incredible story of change and mentorship and leadership from a nation's patriot, a renowned thinker and educator and all around incredible guy. And stay tuned at the end of the episode for a follow on reflective discussion with Rob Shook, my mentor who made this all possible. Together we discuss our insights and takeaways from this inspiring afternoon with the Admiral. Thanks for listening.

The Israeli military has killed at least 20 Palestinians in Gaza, as the fate of the US truce proposal hangs in the balance. Hamas said early on Friday that it is discussing the U.S. ceasefire proposal with other Palestinian groups, and it would submit its response to mediators once the talks conclude. Earlier in the week it appeared a breakthrough was near with to US president Donald Trump claiming that Israel had agreed to conditions for a 60-day ceasefire with Hamas. But it looks like no such progress is on the cards between Russia and Ukraine. To wrap it all together let's cross to Toni Waterman is our US correspondent in Washington.
In this special Independence Day episode, Ghost weaves an epic narrative tracing the origins of the American Revolution through the story of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, and connects those lessons to today's geopolitical chessboard. Ghost recounts Marion's improbable triumphs using irregular warfare and explains how his tactics and spirit echo in modern conflicts. Shifting to current events, the show dives into the escalating tension between Russia and Azerbaijan over organized crime raids, retaliatory arrests, and a media crackdown. Ghost analyzes why Zelensky has publicly sided with Azerbaijan, adding friction to the Russia-Ukraine dynamic. The discussion then pivots to Israel's Likud Party demanding annexation of the West Bank and how this push clashes with Saudi Arabia's clear rejection of any move erasing Palestinian sovereignty. With Saudi ministers flying to Moscow and Washington while Netanyahu seeks Trump's support, Ghost underscores how historic alliances are being tested. Rounding out the episode, he examines potential ceasefire developments in Gaza, the regional implications of a fragmented Lebanon, and why the Abraham Accords narrative may be shifting again.

In June 1947, a private pilot named Kenneth Arnold took off from Chehalis, Washington, on what should have been a routine search flight. He was looking for a downed aircraft near Mount Rainier, nothing unusual, just another day in the sky, the weather was clear, visibility was perfect. But what he saw that day would change the language we use to describe the unexplained forever. Nine objects flying in formation at incredible speed, shiny, crescent-shaped, and moving like stones skipping across water. Arnold couldn't identify them, he couldn't explain them, and neither could the U.S. military.Brief Encounters is a tightly produced, narrative podcast that dives headfirst into the world of UFO sightings, the paranormal, cryptids, myths, and unexplained legends. Prime Minister Netanyahu spent his entire political career warning of the existential threat posed by Iran's nuclear program, and he is now largely being credited — even by domestic critics — with its destruction. The UN's special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has accused dozens of companies of being complicit in war crimes in Gaza and the West Bank in a UN report. They include arms producers, manufacturers whose vehicles are used to demolish homes, technology companies and banks. Swan Songs Portland has a simple but powerful mission: to provide free, intimate concerts for people at the end of their lives and pay local musicians to perform them. The nonprofit fulfilled its first concert request last autumn when it hired a mariachi band to play for a person terminally ill with cancer, surrounded by her friends and family. It is the first affiliate of Swan Songs, which was founded in Austin, Texas 20 years ago. Currently serving Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas Counties, SSP has nearly 50 musicians – and growing – it can call on short notice to perform an array of requested musical styles, from Beethoven to Bob Dylan-esque folk and rock. Jim Friscia is Swan Songs Portland’s board president and concert planner. Karyn Thurston is a musician and board member of SSP who performs with her partner, Ben Grace, in the folk music duo Story & Tune. They join us, along with Terri Burton, who had requested a concert for her dying mother that Grace performed earlier this year.

Shmuel Goldman grew up in a Washington, DC, suburb, part of a traditional, if not Torah observant, family. When Shmuel was in sixth grade, the family came to Israel for a year of fun and adventure. And that's exactly what it was … for everyone else in the family. But for Shmuel, it was the beginning of a new worldview. He knew he'd come back to Israel someday. The only question was when, and how. Fast-forward 40-plus years, and there was Goel, with his wife Gilla waiting in line to order coffee at Makom Yaffe leCafe, an adorable and inspiring coffee spot in the northern part of Israel. As they approached the cashier to place their order, Goel couldn't believe it. “Wait, is this guy American?!” So what happened? Goel sat with Shmuel at Makom Yaffe LeCafe to talk all about it.
On this week's Political Breakfast, Republicans are mostly a united front and in support of President Donald Trump's so-called 'big, beautiful' massive tax and spending bill. Georgia Democrats say there's nothing beautiful about it, claming the bill will strip away people's healthcare and increase poverty while creating tax breaks for the rich. Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson and Republican strategist Brian Robinson and host Lisa Rayam react to the latest as lawmakers debate the bill in the U.S. House. Trump says he wants to sign the bill by the July 4th holiday. It's sweeping tax cuts are estimated to add trillions more to the national debt. It also boosts spending on border security and defense, makes massive cuts to programs like Medicaid and shifts more responsibility for food assistance to the states. It would also slash clean energy tax credits created by the Inflation Reduction Act, that helped propel solar and electric vehicle manufacturing in Georgia.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How does being a Christians affect one's public service? And what can Southern Baptists do to influence the public square? During SBC25 in Dallas, ERLC President Brent Leatherwood spoke with Ambassador designate Mark Walker, President Trump's appointee for the Office of International Religious Freedom, Congressman Nathaniel Moran from Texas, and Sen. James Lankford from Oklahoma about being a Christian in Washington, D.C.Before being named as the Ambassador designate, Mark Walker represented North Carolina's 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2015 to 2021. SHORT BLOG BECAUSE ROCKIES EAT THE SHOW AT 12:30 And I'm off tomorrow and Monday so we're talking Independence Day and the Not-So Big Beautiful Bill today.OF COURSE THE BILL IS GOING TO PASS What did I say yesterday about the fake drama about the Big Beautiful Bill? I told you that there would be a good show of some of the members of the House who said this was a garbage bill and the Senate made it worse before they voted to move it along. And that is EXACTLY what happened. A seven hour procedural vote that cleared the deck for the bill to pass today, so everyone in the House can go home and talk about what a hard battle they fought but this is just how things work in Washington and gosh they wish it was different. So predictable. The bill should pass this morning. I have mixed feelings about this. I'm glad the tax cuts are permanent because if taxes had jumped right now it would crush people who are already being crushed by inflation's impact. But this bill just moves us closer to insolvency. I hope beyond all hope I'm wrong. Please let me be wrong.WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE BILL? Well I've gathered up some stuff from people who think this bill is horrible and why. Here the Committee for a Responsible Federal Government shows how this bill is the biggest budget buster of ALL TIME. This column points out that the bill does nothing to deal with the crisis looming for Social Security and Medicare and even speeds up Social Security's demise. This column talks about the death of regular order, which will absolutely come back to bite the GOP again the next time the Democrats have a slim majority and big ideas, although that column does the best job of giving ALL the pros and cons and is worth a full read. This part on why they are using a reconciliation process instead of doing it the way it should be done is really good:The bill's secret weapon is something called budget reconciliation—a special process that allows legislation affecting federal spending, revenues, or debt to pass the Senate with just 51 votes instead of the usual 60. This procedural advantage was established by the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 to streamline budget decisions. But it's become the preferred method for passing major partisan legislation when one party controls Congress by narrow margins. Reconciliation was originally designed to ensure that Congress could implement budget resolutions by reconciling actual spending and revenue legislation with overall fiscal targets. The idea was to prevent individual appropriations or tax bills from undermining broader budget agreements. Over time, creative lawmakers discovered they could use reconciliation for much more ambitious purposes. Any provision that affects federal spending, revenues, or debt levels can potentially qualify for the expedited process. The current bill qualifies because virtually every provision either raises or lowers taxes, increases or decreases spending, or affects government debt levels. Tax cuts reduce revenues. Healthcare changes affect Medicaid spending. Even seemingly unrelated provisions can be crafted to meet reconciliation requirements. Reconciliation comes with strict limits enforced by the Senate Parliamentarian under rules known as the “Byrd Rule,” named after former Senator Robert Byrd. Provisions must have more than incidental budgetary effects, can't increase deficits beyond the budget window, and must relate primarily to budgetary rather than policy matters. These constraints force bill drafters to be creative about how they structure policies to qualify for fast-track treatment. Sometimes this leads to awkward compromises or sunset clauses that make policies temporary when sponsors want them to be permanent. The time limits built into reconciliation—typically 20 hours of Senate debate—compress normal legislative processes that might otherwise take months into just a few days of intense activity. This speed prevents the kind of detailed examination that complex legislation normally requires.

Last month, Francis Fukuyama was scheduled to come to Washington, DC for a live taping of Wisdom of Crowds. Unfortunately, as subscribers know, Frank lost his voice the morning of his scheduled appearance, and we were forced to cancel. However, we were able to record a bit of conversation with him and Shadi Hamid the following day, with a few colleagues asking questions. The conversation ended up being a quasi-“state of liberalism” address, perfect for July 4th weekend. The conversation begins with Frank discussing the current challenges to liberal societies, addressing why some in the West today might be dissatisfied with it, but also why people living in autocratic regimes throughout the world still long for liberalism. He talks about the lassitude and dissatisfaction that permeates liberal societies, and the contradictory desires for ever-greater equality and spirited competition that drive citizens to rebel against liberalism.During the question and answer session, Fukuyama takes questions about recent events. He discusses the rise of right-wing parties in Europe, as well as recent developments in France, Germany and Romania. He touches upon citizenship, borders, deportations and Trump's immigration policies. And he answers the question that was on everybody's mind that night: Is history still over?Required Reading* Francis Fukuyama, “The End of History?” (National Interest). * CrowdSource, “Fukuyama's Children” (WoC). * Damir and Shadi's 2022 conversation with Francis Fukuyama (WoC).* Santiago Ramos, “Kicking the Ladder” (WoC).Wisdom of Crowds is a platform challenging premises and understanding first principles on politics and culture. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde is a leading voice in modern faith leadership and the first woman elected to serve as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, a role she's held since 2011. While the job isn't always glamorous, she says, the sacred moments in the public eye matter deeply—and she treats them with care. Bishop Budde gained national attention for boldly speaking out against the Trump administration, including condemning the 2020 photo-op at St. John's Episcopal Church and, more recently, offering a prayer for LGBTQ+ justice with President Trump and Vice President Vance seated before her. Her calm, courageous leadership has made her one of the most trusted voices in public faith today. In this conversation with Jen, Bishop Budde shares her journey from a small Minnesota congregation to the national stage—and how she finds the courage to speak truth to power and stand with the marginalized, even when the cost is high. Thought-provoking Quotes: “I think, in some ways, vocations choose you as much as you choose them.” – Mariann Edgar Budde “It's not as if the world stopped on January 21st. So much is happening every single day and there are consequences to the decisions being made.” – Mariann Edgar Budde “I wouldn't have chosen the way they're going, but a lot is being dismantled right now and we've got to be there to help rebuild.” – Mariann Edgar Budde Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Raygun: Bishop Budde Fan Club T-Shirt - https://www.raygunsite.com/products/bishop-budde-fan-club Receiving Jesus: The Way of Love by Mariann Edgar Budde - https://amzn.to/45GO5jh How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith by Mariann Edgar Budde - https://amzn.to/4kbZtan Sermon by The Right Rev.
