In this podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Dr. Steve Katsouros of Come to Believe Foundation and Network, which works with colleges and universities to replicate a successful DEI, enrollment, and graduation model. Dr. Katsouros was the founder of Arrupe College, a two-year institution that is part of Loyola University Chicago. Arrupe has an amazing track record for completion and having students graduate with little or no debt. Fifty percent (50%) of students complete their degree in two years/ nearly 70% in three years, and 90% of graduates incur no debt. More promising, more than 70% of students complete their Bachelor's degrees in five years or less. Compare this to the national average, where 13% of students in two-year colleges complete their Associate's degree in two years, and 13% of students who start at two-year colleges complete their Bachelor's degrees in six years. Steve discusses Arrupe's credit-bearing remedial classes, the rigorous application process, the Fellows Program that connects freshmen with sophomores in and outside of class, the roles of its graduate support coordinator, financial aid officer, and employer relations officer that help students succeed, and more. Arrupe's model can be applied to any 2- or 4-year institution. Podcast Highlights 50% of students at Arrupe College complete their degree in two years, 90% incur no debt and more than 70% complete their Bachelor's degrees in five years or less. Arrupe's model attracts first-generation, Pell-eligible, and undocumented students and helps them flourish in a post-secondary ed environment and beyond. Upon launching the model at Arrupe, over 50% of its donors had never given to its larger university, Loyola University Chicago, before. Most of these donors consisted of the many relationships that Arrupe made with local businesses through its model. One donor gave $100 million to Loyola University Chicago for all Pell and first-generation students from low-wealth backgrounds. For higher ed institutions that want to adopt Arrupe's model, Come to Believe helps university leaders perform a feasibility study to make sure they have bandwidth and consensus for the program and helps them prepare for presenting their proposals to their boards. The application season for the next cohort is open until the end of March. → View the podcast transcript More About Our Podcast Guest A member of the United States East Province of the Society of Jesus, Steve Katsouros, S.J., is the president and CEO of the Come to Believe Foundation and Network in New York City. Before Come to Believe, Fr. Katsouros served as the founding dean and executive director of Arrupe College at Loyola University Chicago. Arrupe is a two-year college that continues the Jesuit tradition of offering a rigorous liberal arts education to a diverse population, many of whom are the first in their family to pursue higher education. Fr. Katsouros served as Arrupe's academic and administrative leader from 2014 until 2020. In Paul Tough's study of higher education, The Most Important Years: How College Can Make or Break You (2019), the author observed Arrupe College "may be doing a more impressive job of keeping its students enrolled and on track for success than any other institution I visited." Prior to his assignment at Arrupe, Fr. Katsouros served as the director of the Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership (ICEL) and associate dean of the School of Education at the University of San Francisco. From 2002-2011, Fr. Katsouros was president of Loyola, a coed Jesuit high school on Manhattan's Upper East Side; during his years at Loyola, the endowment and annual giving tripled, capital gifts were raised to refurbish the physical plant, and faculty and staff salaries increased to market competitiveness. The success of Arrupe College and its students inspired Fr. Katsouros to lead Come to Believe, a network, and foundation created to replicate and scale the Arrupe model nationally. Based in Manhattan, with teams working in Chicago and New York, Come to Believe provides advisory services to universities with the capacity to launch and sustain successful two-year colleges for high-potential students from low-wealth backgrounds. Come to Believe guides university leaders through the process of implementation and launch of new colleges and provides research-based best practices and problem-solving techniques. Fr. Katsouros earned his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in organizational leadership; his research interests are leadership, governance, and institutional performance. He was ordained in 1998. In her late 50's, Barbara Pagano and her daughter Elizabeth set out for a six-month sailing adventure on a 42-foot sailboat. Even though neither woman was an experienced sailor, they sailed alone for more than 2,000 miles. Two weeks prior to their departure, Barbara failed navigation school. Fortunately, Elizabeth earned her certification from a one-week sailing school. Pushing a little boat through water was hard work, especially for two inexperienced sailors. Barbara learned how by just doing it. Eight years later, that ‘learn-by-doing' approach yielded significant returns as Barbara faced the challenge of creating a post-retirement life. The transition should not have been so difficult, but it was hard for her. Her experience and motivation to help others inspired the launch of your extraordinary life in retirement.com. She gives post-50 individuals the tools and strategies to design and live fulfilling lives in the last third of life. With graduate degrees in counseling and human behavior as her base, Barbara curates research on aging, retirement, productive longevity, well-being, and happiness to produce content with groundbreaking clarity and a refreshing experienced voice. Teaching and education are popular topics for teacher blogs. It makes sense. You're a teacher. You write about what you know. Sounds perfect, right? Well, here's an unpopular opinion. Your teacher blog shouldn't be about teaching… or education… or anything school related. Wait. What? Yep, you read that right. I don't think teachers should start blogs about teaching. That may sound counterintuitive, or even just plain wrong, but there are some very solid, practical reasons not to set up your blog around the topic of teaching and learning. Your Teacher Niche May Change, But Your Blog Niche Shouldn't When you start a blog, finding a niche is important. You need to narrow the focus of what you write about so your audience finds you when they search, and you become highly referable. “Oh you want help learning how to refinish colonial furniture? You've got to check out Jessica's blog!” If you want to know more about niching, check out this blogcast. So let's say your niche is 2nd grade classroom management, or even more broadly, early elementary classroom culture. Both of these would be awesome niches, and could be the basis of a successful business. But… What happens when your partner gets a new job that takes you out of state, and the only teaching job you can find is in 5th grade? You either have to change your blog topic, or create early elementary blog info while you develop 5th grade lessons. What if you want to loop with a class you really connected with and follow them up to 3rd grade… Would you reconsider staying with your awesome kids because they don't fit with your blog? Or would you again be doubling up on work? What if your principal reads a book that says teachers who stay in the same grade level for more than 5 years become complacent, and decides to arbitrarily change everyone's teaching assignment? (I have seen this happen.) When your blog niche is tied to your job, which you don't have total control of, you run the risk of being put in the tough spot of staying in a grade level, subject, school, or even profession that you feel ready to move on from, or changing the focus of an established blog and setting your business back, or doubling your work trying to keep your blog niche the same while you teach something else. This is just one reason I recommend choosing a blog topic that has nothing to do with your role in the classroom. Here's another… You Need a Break You teach all day. You probably spend time at home thinking about, and working on, and planning for your teaching. That's enough. Creating a blog that is also about teaching and learning is just more time you have to spend thinking about teaching and learning. Teaching is already a 24/7 profession (if you let it be), and building a business can be a fantastic way to explore other interests and areas of expertise, give your brain a break from thinking about school, and grow in new ways. My first blog was centered on mom life, which was the other major focus of my life, having just become a new mom. It was also an area I felt was suffering due to the amount of time I was working or thinking about work. For me, the blog was a way to force myself to take off my teacher hat, learn news things, and focus on my family. It's hard to admit, but yes, it took starting a business to get me to refocus on my family. The interesting thing was the impact it had on my teaching. I was more patient with the kids. I didn't snap at them as much. I had more empathy for the kids who were struggling because I was struggling with learning how to run a business. I was more efficient with my time because I really wanted to have time to work on my blog. When I set a hard stop time for all school work at 8pm (and even set an alarm to remind me to stop), I knew I had to focus on the most important things first. All the necessary stuff got done, and I discovered just how much I was doing that I didn't need to do. My burning desire to get out of teaching faded. My blog brought my life back into balance (ish), which helped me see that I wasn't done with teaching… I was just burnt out. I needed a break, not a divorce. Being a teacher in this day and age will consume your life if you let it. Do you really want to base your blog and your business on it, too? Perhaps you're feeling a bit of teacher guilt creeping in for wanting time away from thinking about all things education. After all, we're bombarded with messages of teaching being a calling rather than a career, and that teaching isn't just what we do, but who we are. And I don't necessarily disagree on those points. I was called to be a teacher. It is who I am. But I don't think that the universe is so particular as to say that I'm only allowed to teach PreK-12 music in the state of Connecticut. Or that one has to be certified by any institution in order to be considered a teacher. I was teaching through my mom blog, and I continue to teach via Side Hustle Teachers. And those outlets are just as valid a place to teach as a classroom. So, if you need someone to tell you it's okay to care about, be interested in, and even make money from something other than what it says on your teaching certificate, you've got it. You have permission to be a teacher plus. What's plus? Plus is whatever you want it to be. You can be a teacher plus, a crafter, a fisherman, a songwriter, or a fashionista, a genealogist, astrologer, or candy maker. You have permission to take off your teacher hat to expand your mind and your bank account. You have permission to believe that you're called to teach and impact the world in other ways. You have permission to identify as a teacher, but still want to be something more. You have permission to want more than your teaching salary affords. What Are Your Long-Term Plans? About half of the teachers in the Side Hustle Teachers Community say that their ultimate goal for their side hustle is to start a business that will help them leave teaching. And while, you may change your mind - like I did - if you're going to start a blog with the goal of ultimately leaving the classroom, it doesn't make sense to build it around education. For one thing, if you don't want to continue in teaching, why would you establish a business that is founded on being a teacher? Logic would dictate that you want to spend less time on school-related stuff, not more. (See the previous section, You Need a Break.) But there's another issue to consider here. Street cred. Have you ever read a teaching book by someone who's no longer teaching? And while reading that book, did you think to yourself, “That's great, but you haven't taught actual students in 20 years, so who are you to tell me what to do,” while angrily closing it and throwing on top of the pile of other books just like it? This is the same problem I have with most professional development because it's run by former teachers turned consultants… and don't get me started on “inspirational” teacher movies. Once you leave the classroom to run your blog business full time, it's difficult to maintain authority with teachers. Because, while I believe blogging is a form of teaching, it's not a classroom, and teachers are quick to dismiss information and advice from people who aren't “one of them” anymore. Now, please note that I'm not telling anyone that teacher blogs about teaching are bad or that teachers who start them are making a mistake. There are many teachers out there whose businesses are education-based, even though they aren't teaching anymore, and they're killing it! If you sell on Teachers Pay Teachers, for example, you don't need to be actively teaching to create useful resources for teachers. If you have a connection to your community through your blog, they can tell you what they want! If you consult with schools and work with teachers, your blog can include the real-world examples of the schools and classrooms you visit. It is possible. So if you read this post and are thinking, “I really want to start a blog about teaching, but Stacey told me not to…” Nope. This post came about because a number of clients, students, and community members have reached out recently asking what they should blog about. They were stuck because they felt like the only thing they could write about (as teachers) was teaching. Not true! You can write about anything that lights you up. You can write about anything you're good at. You can write about anything you're learning about, and take your readers on the journey with you. You can write about anything. No matter how hard we try, no matter how much we think about and plan for every possibility, something is going to go wrong. Don't worry! It happens to all of us at one point or another. Being a business owner means that you need to be ready for when the worst happens, because how you deal with that situation can mean the difference between really stretching those problem-solving skills and becoming completely derailed. Don't Let it Break You, Let it Make You The truth is that things are going to happen that are out of your control. My story this week about my boxes being scattered all across the road is definitely one of those situations. Murphy's law has a way of striking when you're least expecting, so we as business owners need to be ready to pick up the pieces and move forward. The important thing to remember is that this is your business. You built it from the ground up, and nothing is going to keep you from being successful. But you're not in this alone! One thing I love about the group we have, all of us subscription box owners, is to be able to fall back on each other to help us through those times when the problems seem overwhelming. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask for help. Take that time to breathe in and calm your nerves, because we all need that sometimes, but use it to right yourself and clear your head for the task in front of you. Don't let the unexpected break you, let it make you and show you what you really are capable of. A mother sat by her child's hospital bed as doctors declared him brain dead. Amanda Bonfitto watched her beautiful four-and-a-half year old son Harrison, trying to process. How could this happen? Why was this happening? It was then, in the midst of this dense fog while attempting to make sense of something which could only seem totally nonsensical that Amanda recalled a conversation. Just a few days earlier Harrison said he was going to stop breathing and die. Four days later, it was the week of Thanksgiving in America, and Harrison unexpectedly and suddenly choked. There was a logical medical explanation for this untimely death. But how could the dramatic impact of losing her child begin to make any sense? How will life carry on? Is there really life after Harrison? In this powerful episode, I am joined by Amanda and I believe Harrison's energy is present, in this fragile exploration of Amanda's story that is filled with her incredible strength, vulnerability and resilience. Amanda shares her life journey by walking listeners through and reflecting on her experiences while carefully unfolding her personal learning and self discovery leading to her 'spiritual awakening.'She says: "It has been a beautiful and hard journey into the light. I still feel like I am mostly standing in the doorway now, learning how to care for myself and scanning the room of spirituality, with one foot ready to step, deciding where to step first." Amanda plans to launch her own podcast titled This Won't Break You and is inviting listeners to contact her directly at: thiswontbreakyou@gmail.com if you have a story to share. Favorite Success Quote “Starting is fun, but the future belongs to finishers.” Key Points 1. Starting is Fun But Success Belongs to Finishers Do you remember the last time that you started a new workout program or online course? Do you remember that warm fuzzy feeling you got in the pit of your stomach while you were starting a journey towards your goals? Now let me ask you another question… Do you remember the last time that you actually went through and completely finished a book, workout program, online course, or anything else of importance? Most of you don’t… And this doesn’t make you a bad person, it doesn’t make you lazy, it makes you human. You see, as people we are wired to start things. Whether we are starting a new diet, a new business, a new book, or whatever else it is, we love starting. It’s fun, it’s exciting, and it makes us feel important. Finishing, on the other hand, sucks. To finish something, you must endure small failures and setbacks, you must persevere even when you don’t feel motivated, and you must keep pushing through the parts that don’t feel particularly exciting or fun. But success belongs to finishers. No one became successful by starting something. They became successful by following it through to the end and finishing. When you realize this, when you truly internalize this principle, everything will change. 2. Perfectionism will Break You Nothing will wreck your goals, limit your potential, and destroy your plans more than perfectionism. Nothing. Perfectionism is merely an alibi for inaction. It’s an excuse to do nothing. Whereas the non-perfectionist says “I know that I can’t do xyz perfectly with my current resources, what can I do to move things forward anyways.” The perfectionist says “I know that I can’t do xyz perfectly so why even bother doing it at all?” When you operate from this framework, you are setting yourself up to fail. No one succeeds when they have a commitment to perfection. Because, quite simply, perfection cannot exist. There will always be something that prevents you from achieving true perfection which means there will always be something that prevents you from finishing your goals, no matter what they are. If you want to live a great life and have a lot of fun doing so, then I challenge you to eradicate the word “Perfect” from your vocabulary. Focus on getting things done and finishing. Because success belongs to the finishers. 3. Slow it Down and Cut it Back Once you have committed to being a “Finisher” and not a perfectionist, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. You have all of these goals and big dreams that you want to achieve, but they just seem so daunting and scary. Take a deep breath, relax, and realize that it’s going to be ok. Instead of stressing yourself out and killing yourself to achieve arbitrarily set goals that don’t have any real significance in your life, slow things down and cut back. Here’s what I mean. Let’s say that your goal is to lose 15 lbs. in the next month. While it’s admirable that you want to lose weight, it’s also a foolish goal. You are simply trying to do too much too quickly. Why do you need to lose so much weight in the next 30 days? What’s so significant about the next month that you are willing to starve yourself to death in order to hit an arbitrary weight goal? Instead, let’s take the finisher’s approach. Cut the goal in half and double the timeline. Now, instead of 15 lbs. in 30 days, it’s 7 lbs. in 60 days. That means you need to lose less than one pound a week! That’s doable right? Some of you reading this might think, “No! I’ve gotta push hard, I’ve gotta go crazy and lose this weight” And I get it, that’s what you’ve been conditioned to think. But let me ask you something… If this approach works, then why haven’t you lost the weight already? 4. Examine What Has Worked in the Past Whenever you set out to achieve any new goal, start by looking at what has worked in the past. For example, if you take stock of your life and realize that you have mastered your physical health but you’re struggling to get a grip on your finances, simply look at the habits and routines that helped to become physically fit and apply them to your life so that you can become financially fit. When you examine the habits that helped you become healthy, you might realize that the first step you took was to clear out your pantry of all junk food, thereby eliminating 90% of the temptation you felt. This can be applied to your finances. Call your bank and setup an automatic savings transfer that will draft out of your account every time you get paid. The next time your paycheck hits your account, you will automatically have a small portion of your income going directly to your savings account. You don’t realize it’s gone, you can’t touch the money that has been transferred, and you have no temptation to spend that money on things you don’t need. Success leaves clues. If you have achieved success anywhere in life, you can achieve it everywhere in life if you are simply willing to look at what has worked, pick out the patterns, and apply them to all areas of your life. 5. Have Fun with the Process At the end of the day, life is supposed to be fun. It isn’t supposed to be a rat race, it isn’t supposed to be a drag, it’s supposed to be fun! So start acting like it. Enjoy the goals that you set, enjoy the things that you pursue, enjoy every moment that you can because life is precious and it’s meant to be enjoyed.

Friday Wrap-UpAs leaders, our number on job description is to be able to make accurate, timely and effective decision. That can range from small, routine decisions and an all important strategic decision. A great leader will be able to make these decision, communicate them to the team effectively and supervise the implementation of the decisions made.Great leaders can balance their emotions against the reasons for the decisions. Great leaders will make the decisions despite the anxiety, stress and sometimes unfavorable reactions from peers, subordinates and others. If the decision needs to be made, they need to make it.This week, I shared with you several different types of decisions that can, quite literally, “Make or Break You” as a leader! On Monday,I discussed “How to Hire”people. As a leader, it is your job to be able to evaluate potential new hires, review the information they have provided you. Remember, they are biased in the information they providing. http://rthibodeau.com/2019/03/decisions-that-can-make-or-break-you-as-a-leader-pt-1/On Tuesday,I covered the flip side of that. We talked about “How to FIRE”people. I shared how this extremely difficult for some leaders because begin to see our team members as part of our “family.” We realize this action is going to impact others beside the employee we are letting go. But as leaders, must do what is good for the organization.http://rthibodeau.com/2019/03/decisions-that-can-make-or-break-you-as-a-leader-pt-2/On Wednesday,I talked about the importance of those small, routine decisions. I shared a couple of examples that demonstrated even small decisions can have a major impact on the business. http://rthibodeau.com/2019/03/decisions-that-can-make-or-break-you-as-a-leader-pt-3/On Thursday,I shared with you how the leader should be spending most of their time on researching and fact finding for those strategic, long term decisions. These are decisions that will be possibly implemented years down the road. http://rthibodeau.com/2019/03/decisions-that-can-make-or-break-you-as-a-leader-pt-4/Hiring, firing and decision making for the business or organization is what the leader does. It falls you the leader to make the right choice – every time. Failure to make the correct choice can have a devastating effect on the organization as a whole. This is the reason a leader should always do the due diligence and research in order to gather as much information as possible before making a decision. Whether that is “who to hire” or “who to let go” or what the long term ramifications are of plan about to implemented, it is the ultimate responsibility of the leader (you) to make the right decision. Truly, these are some of the “Decisions that will make (or break) you, as a leader!”You can read the entire post for today on my website at:http://rthibodeau.com/2019/03/decisions-that-can-make-or-break-you-as-a-leader-pt-5-friday-wrap-up/
Sometimes… Do you feel like NOT doing anything And feel like some BLOCKS AND RESISTANCE that are really keeping you behind And… All you want is not doing too MUCH work… You FEEL like you are tired and you need A BREAK You want to watch A MOVIE You feel like you should take OFF Even then, you never feel satisfied and you feel exhausted you don't feel good AT ALL! But remember! You can choose to feel a little bit differently You need to start to experience change and take some really important actions The BIGGEST THING is now getting into action And start doing that remember that it's okay to acknowledge that you are not feeling OK. Acknowledge that you are a human and you are not always going to be perfect, not always going to feel amazing. You are neither a superwoman nor superman. Take some actions so that you can shift everything. Think about what else you can do to FEEL better! Remember! You absolutely can have it ALL, by just thinking a little bit differently at times when you feel like not doing anything. Regan x
