Startups live in ongoing turbulence and uncertainty. Surviving crisis after crisis is part of the entrepreneur's journey. But the war in Ukraine also created a human crisis well beyond what any of us expected. Suddenly at Startup Wise Guys we found ourselves calling our 46 Ukrainian portfolio companies and asking them if they were alive. Bogdan was right before living the startup dream. Having raised a pre-seed round, growing their MRR nicely and 5 Leading Ukrainian retailers as customers. Suddenly he found himself and his company NeoCurrent with nothing. It took courage and drive, to move to the UK and started rebuilding the startup. How do you deal with that? You need to think, this is not the end, it is a new beginning. Speaker:

Ne abbiamo parlato con Andrea T. Orlando, Managing Partner di Startup Wise Guys Italy.

Startups focusing on food, agriculture, biodiversity, and forestry offer some of the best opportunities to impact global carbon emissions significantly, said Max Bauchau, who runs Startup Wise Guys Sustainability program. The 2012-founded SWG has invested in around 300 startups over the years. Bauchau said the accelerator-investor, which boasts an 80% survival rate, will start a new sustainability program in October 2022 in Copenhagen.Learn about:Why Denmark is home to SWG Sustainability programWhy do carbon investors focus on food? How can 80% of early-stage startup investments survive? How to apply for SWG Sustainability program In the NatureBacked podcast of Single.Earth, we are talking with investors about the vision of the new green world.**A few key takeaways from Max Bauchau:**Food and agriculture …. represent, according to different studies, around 24-25% of all CO2 emissions in the world. So this is a segment that needs to be tackled, that needs to be worked on. **We believe that Denmark is a fantastic sandbox for those kinds of companies. We have some very large companies active in Denmark's agriculture and food. And therefore creating innovation can really be a great sandbox for those companies to create to partner with those larger companies, and to really figure out what's the best way to approach this or this client, and how to create a sustainable solution that really has an impact on the world.**It is no surprise that Scandinavia is one step ahead of the rest of the world regarding sustainability. So a lot of the mentalities are already changed here. Investment is going towards sustainability; it is going towards impact startups.**Ideally, we have companies with small recurring revenues, so there is validation from the market. And we are also looking for great teams. That is, again, a very important factor. We could invest in pre-revenue businesses. That is fine, too, if we strongly believe in the team.**Follow NatureBacked across platforms:Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google PodcastsTwitter | Instagram
An entrepreneur since the age of 14, Sander Gansen is the Co-founder and CEO of Estonia-based WOF Labs, a blockchain research and engineering company building Supplain protocol & World of Freight NFT ecosystem. Sander believes that every child should start their first business at the age of four and no later than their teen years in order to have enough time to learn the necessary skills and still have the power to start something extraordinary when they are adults. Sander is fascinated by science and experimentation to change the course of humanity for the better, but his main goal is to help speed up the adoption of emerging technologies. Before WOF Labs, Sander established or helped to grow various other businesses, including Springrise (marketing strategy & execution agency), Speys/Shipitwise (logistics & supply chain management tool) and Robotex (global robotics education network). Sander's prior experience includes working in Startup Wise Guys, a private capital accelerator and investment fund and teaching entrepreneurship at multiple Estonian universities. At the World of Freight NFT ecosystem, everything revolves around the collection of 10,000 unique vehicle-themed NFTs. Together with the community, WOF's goal is to build the number one vehicle-themed NFT ecosystem with a P2E racing game where the vehicles can be customized and upgraded. At the same time, the community is involved in building Supplain, a supply chain blockchain that aims to standardize the rules for information exchange across the global supply chain. Sander graduated in 2015 from Draper University with a non-academic degree in business and startup building. He has studied Law and Business Administration at the University of Tartu.

We also discuss why investors like to invest in B2B SaaS and the value that early-stage support organizations can bring to startups in the pre-accelerator stage. The topics covered in this episode with Timestamps[06:00] - Startup Wise Guys and early-stage investing/acceleratingAccelerator wants you to move 6x faster than without itIt's not school, nobody checks attendanceThe key value add of the accelerator is the community of founders who are struggling the same as youThe average age of founders is increasingBeware of passive accelerators - if you are giving up equity, you want to maximize the valueThink very hard whether you want and need accelerating as many companies are already matured past and might give up equity without the necessary value[22:40] - What accelerators want to see in founders and companiesRevenue can be a vanity metric and not say anything about traction and trajectoryIf founder just wants money, they should go to a Non-accelerator investorIf the founder is not committed to full time, it's a big red flagFounder decisiveness is a key requirement[38:00] - What to expect from the acceleration programThe acceptance rate is 1-2%This is a long term relationship, accelerator stays on your capable 5-7 years while the accelerating phase usually lasts around 12 monthsSupport for founders in the further round and help avoid big mistakes[48:20] - B2B SaaS - Why is it the favorite business model for VCsB2B SAAS is extremely broad, also Fintech can be B2B SaaSThe model is relatively easier to build for the founderThe traction metrics are easy to track and compare to others, thus it is less risky for the investor to take a betThe importance of revenue in the earliest stages should not be overstatedBig corporates develop quickly from product user to acquisition of the providerEdtech and health tech as biggest opportunities in B2B SaaSThe next generation of blockchain companies[1:06:30] - The role of support organizations for startupsInternationalization of local startup ecosystemsTaking care of startups that are not ready for investment/accelerators yetFind out more on https://www.pursuitofscrappiness.co/ Support for this episode comes from Nexpay > https://paynexpay.com/

In this episode, Hall welcomes Juan Alonso-Villalobos, Fintech Program Director at Startup Wiseguys. Headquartered in Tallinn, Harjumaa, Startup Wiseguys is a mentorship-driven accelerator program for early-stage B2B SaaS, Fintech, Cyber, and Sustainability startups, providing seed capital (€30K), office space, and most importantly – world-class mentors. The intensive 5-month accelerator program is focused on validating, developing and selling products to business customers. Over 250 international and local mentors with B2B startup experience help startups move through those stages much faster than they would on their own. Founders are also prepared to sell their vision to investors, and the program culminates in a Demo Day, where startups get to present to venture capitalists and angel investors. Focused during the last years in the investment and startups world, Juan is himself an entrepreneur at heart, having launched several projects (and closed some of them too). Juan has been Fintech Director in Startup Wise Guys for the last 4 years, and although also supporting startups from other sectors, he sees all the startups within Fintech, Insurtech, or other “money-related” regulated businesses. As he says, he was already part of one of the first “fintechs” in Spain and France, within ING Direct, which was there to challenge the status of banking at the time. He is a Partner of his own consultancy firm, PMLG Advisory through which he gives support to International PE firms seeking to develop their Spanish businesses. Juan has developed his professional career mostly in financial services (banking and insurance) in C-level positions covering very different organizational areas: Finance, Marketing, Business Development, Strategy, Digital. These multi-expertise skills allow him to have a 360º view on businesses. A vast experience in consultancy, banking, insurance, and capital markets. He holds BA degrees in Law and Business, both from Comillas University in Spain, and gone through Executive Education in CEDEP (Fontenaibleau – France). He lives (most of the time) in Madrid with his wife, also a tech entrepreneur, and his four children. Juan advises entrepreneurs and investors, discusses how he sees the industry evolving, and shares some of the challenges he has faced.
