This is a review of the run of Dark Shadows television shows which featured the character Barnabas Collins who maybe, possibly, perhaps was a vampire. This is a really unique TV show/soap opera unlike anything else I've ever seen on television. With all the melodrama of a soap opera but with vampires, ghosts, and a mystery! Join host Karl Stern as he discusses Dark Shadows.
This week we watch a movie that takes several hundred episodes of the seminal gothic soap opera and condenses them to 90 brisk minutes of vampire melodrama in a way that is confusing and frustrating in ways that few movies are.Dark Shadows, for all its cheesiness and cheapness is one of the most important contributions to horror in the way that it added a dimension to vampire media that hadn't really been explored yet. Without Barnabas Collins you do not get Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. No Buffy The Vampire Slayer. No Vampire The Masquerade. In this episode we run it down in depth. Dave is a huge fan of the TV show and can't wait to tell you all about it and fill in the blanks where the movie fails because believe me, listeners, this movie fails big time. The wealthy Collins family receives a visit from long-lost cousin Barnabas but he conceals a terrible truth. He is a 200 year old vampire, freed from his prison of a hidden locked coffin by the Collins family handyman. He stalks the people of Collinsport by night and falls madly in love with the Collins family governess, Maggie, when she bears a striking resemblance the woman he once loved. It's basically Dracula but with a lot of really weird zigs and zags as it does its best encapsulate over one hundred hours of soap opera storytelling into a short feature film.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

Tonight we're diving into the gothic playground of Tim Burton — a director whose fingerprints are carved deep into American pop culture. From Edward Scissorhands, Burton's bittersweet suburban fairy tale about isolation and artistry, to Mars Attacks!, his anarchic send-up of mid-century sci-fi and political hubris, and finally Dark Shadows, his nostalgic monster mash of style over sincerity — this lineup traces the arc of a filmmaker both trapped and liberated by his own aesthetic. It's a look at how Burton went from misunderstood romantic to self-parody, and how, even now, his best work still feels like the dream of an outcast who never quite came down.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
2025 marks the 55th anniversary of the 1970 feature film, House of Dark Shadows. To help celebrate the occasion, Ansel Faraj and Darren Gross return to Terror at Collinwood for a lively conversation about the movie. Topics include: First time seeing HoDS, the original screening date in 1970, international screenings, things we liked about the picture, fandom feelings about the movie, scenes that were cut from the film, the Curtis and Frid situation after the film's release, speculation about what a sequel with Jonathan Frid might have been about, and more! A quiet Sunday turned into something else entirely. We kick things off with the Big Ten pulse check—Ohio State's defense looks nasty, disciplined, and deceptively complex, while Michigan's power run game still feels one note against an elite unit. Indiana's surprising charge raises a real question: are we watching a true new contender or a hot streak built on timing and grit? We dig into coaching impact, road-game confidence, and the thin margin between swagger and a trap. Then the night flips. A college party swells behind the house, cars creep onto the lawn, and a sick-to-your-stomach moment breaks out as the crowd surges into the yard. What follows is a case study in boundaries and tone: we ask, we wait, we de-escalate, and when it spikes again, we make the call. No theatrics, no heroics—just calm language, cool officers, and the party dissolving back to its side of the alley. It's part funny, part frustrating, and fully real life.We also take you on the road to a Dayton-area wedding where the dance floor never cools, late-night tracks get spicy, and the bride's joy becomes the best kind of chaos. In the quieter moments, we play with AI that turns our photos into Simpsons and Family Guy art—nostalgia in a click, proof that small creative toys can brighten a long day. And because comfort culture never sleeps, we drift into movies (Torque's underrated soundtrack and stunts, Depp's moody Sweeney Todd and Dark Shadows) and the most passionate debate of all: cereals. From Cinnamon Toast Crunch to the off-brand boxes you swear existed, we chase memories down every aisle. There's a final nudge on health and habits—less salt, more water, and a reminder that a second chance deserves a better routine. If you're here for sports, stories, tech toys, or just a laugh at midnight mayhem, you'll feel at home. If this ride hits, follow the show, share it with a friend, and drop us your wildest neighbor story or your Big Ten power ranking in the comments. The word “vamp” has multiple meanings. To some it might mean a seductive woman. To many it will bring to mind a sanguinarily obsessed undead creature with long fangs that sleeps in coffins. To others it connotes stretching out some nonsensical patter in order to fill time! We are happy to report that two out of these three working definitions will be in play for this episode we did on House of Dark Shadows, the 1970 film spinoff of the popular television soap opera Dark Shadows. We detail the various storylines that the film somehow both drags out and hopelessly rushes as we get to know Barnabas Collins, Maggie, and all those other beloved Collins's of Collinsport and Collinswood. If that sounds like nonsense to you… don't worry we barely understand any of it either. Topics include: Vampire Diaries, Soapnet, and the 2012 Tim Burton Adaptation's overall suckiness.
Will the United States of America stand as a nation as we know it until the rapture? History repeats itself for nations who fall because of preoccupation with prosperity and the influence and domination of Satan's Cosmic System. Our future is clear if we continue down the present path toward disaster. However, a viable solution is available.
Scott Young is a producer, writer, director and Dark Shadows fan who attempted to pitch a Dark Shadows TV reunion movie in the 1980s. Despite support from several of the original series' writers and cast members, the Return to Collinwood pitch was not greenlit. In 2014/2015, Scott dusted off the pitch, reenvisioned it as a series, and retitled the project, Darker Shadows. However, this attempt was also unsuccessful. Scott visits the podcast to offer some insights into his proposals for a new DS. In addition, Scott discusses his involvement with the DS fandom going all the way back to his days volunteering at ShadowCon in the 1970s as well as assisting with the Original Music from Dark Shadows Volume 2album. Is Dark Shadows Fading and What Does the Future Hold? with Patrick McCray – As Dark Shadows Daybook author Patrick McCray astutely observes, “Dark Shadows is the “Star Trek” of horror”… but is it fading from popular culture? Patrick is the good cop and Penny is the bad cop in this episode where several questions are raised… Why aren't there more licensees? How can new fans access the show? References, and why aren't there more? What can fans do to boost the signal? Is it actually best for DS to stay in the shadows? Has the fandom become too contented? What will the fandom be like in 20 years? And much more! Download or listen to the AUDIO version below. Watch the VIDEO version on YouTube. Actress and writer Lizzie Hopley was born in Liverpool and trained at RADA. As an actress, she has worked for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Globe Theatre and recent screen work includes Black Doves and upcoming feature film Fackham Hall. As a writer, her radio sitcom Green won Pozzitive TV's Funny Dot Comp 2021 and TV series Bloody Betty is currently in development. She has written and appeared in over 90 Big Finish audio adventures including Dark Shadows and Doctor Who, and her Doctor Who audio play The Curse of Lady Macbeth won the 2022 Scribe Award. Lizzie joins me to talk about how her childhood love of writing and acting became a vocation, auditioning for RADA—twice—and how she ended up continuing to write even as a drama student, how learning to think of acting and writing as having a target changed her work, and a whole lot more. Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Lizzie Hopley shares her creative childhood and love for books. 04:56 Acting out movie scenes alone sparked early passion for performance. 08:45 Family encouraged storytelling, costumes, and imagination at home. 13:11 Difficulties pursuing creative careers; importance of following passion. 17:33 University and RADA experiences shaped her acting and writing path. 22:24 Writing plays began due to lack of desired acting roles. 27:29 Rewriting and feedback are crucial for improving both crafts. 32:54 Learning to target audience while writing; acting versus writing focus. 37:22 Acting training emphasizes focusing on scene partner, not yourself. 43:48 Importance of editors and learning to kill your darlings. 48:21 Confidence and caring less about others' opinions increases with age. 53:07 Acting and writing overlap at Big Finish; playing her own roles. 57:16 Big Finish's community impact, creative freedom, and professional development. 01:02:18 Target books and early Doctor Who fandom as creative inspiration. 01:07:04 Embrace varied interests; open doors for yourself in creativity. Want more? Here are handy playlists with all my previous interviews with guests in writing, theatre, and Doctor Who. If you enjoyed our conversation, I hope you'll share it with a friend. Check out the full show notes (now including transcripts!) at fycuriosity.com, and connect with me and fellow creatives on Substack. Please leave a review for this episode—it's really easy and will only take a minute, and it really helps me reach new listeners. Thanks! Our name, is the TV/Movie Rewind Podcast. As night falls on Matt & Todd, they find themselves drawn into the gothic madness of Dark Shadows. Dark Shadows is a show born from the literal dream of Dan Curtis in 1966, fleshed out by writer Art Wallace, and brought to moody life by directors Lela Swift, John Sedwick, and Henry Kaplan.Set designer Sy Thomasoff, composer Robert Cobert, and writers Sam Hall and Ron Sproat helped build what would, by 1968, become a cultural phenomenon—an unlikely soap that reshaped supernatural storytelling for generations, airing on June 27, 1966 on ABC until April 2, 1971.For horror fans today, Dark Shadows is a cornerstone. It carved a path for everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel to True Blood and Anne Rice, maybe this. What begins as a tale of mysterious genetics and brooding intrigue spirals quickly into the story of a tortured vampire thrust into increasingly deranged predicaments. We're talking soap opera insanity: At one point remorseful vampire astral-projects through time to defeat the mute ghost of a warlock… but instead helps him (with help from another warlock…) fight a phoenix that said warlock (the future-ghost one) accidentally created… this runs afoul of the plans of the witch (who created the vampire). That's before fancy-knifed assassins, magic severed hands, a werewolf curse, yet another even more powerful warlock show up, and 400 more episodes before the narrative ends abruptly. It's homage. It's theft. It's divine melodrama. And it's also… 1,225 episodes. Not every one is a masterpiece. Pacing? Glacial. Takes? Singular. Flubs? Frequent. Stone walls? Rattling. Bats? Unapologetically rubber. No blood, the violence is rather tame, but if you can get ‘into it' there is so much fun to be had here.As essential to genre history as Dracula, Star Wars, or Star Trek, Dark Shadows is a wild, shadowy ride. This is best enjoyed with someone who's ready to lean into the madness.Dark Shadows stars (for the most part):Alexandra Moltke (Isles) as Victoria WintersJonathan Frid as Barnabas CollinsDavid Selby as Quentin CollinsLara Parker as Angelique BouchardJoan Bennett as Elizabeth Collins-StoddardLouis Edmonds as Roger CollinsNancy Barrett as Carolyn Collins-StoddardDavid Henesy as David CollinsKathryn Leigh Scott as Maggie EvansJohn Karlen as Willy LoomisThayer David as … we'll go with “Stokes”Grayson Hall as Julia HoffmanJoel Crothers as poor, poor Joe HaskellDark Shadows is a Dan Curtis Production.Find and reach out to Matt on: Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois.bsky.socialLetterboxdFacebook: Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.Follow who we follow:Once Upon a Geek and The Fade Out Podcast

When you move into a new house, you expect to feel at home. But what happens when the house has other plans? In this episode, we explore the terrifying experiences of someone who moves into a seemingly normal house only to discover that it's anything but. Prayer flags disappear, dark shadows loom, and a presence makes itself known in increasingly aggressive ways. This haunting isn't just subtle; it's in your face, forcing the storyteller to confront the terrifying reality that their new home is haunted. With nowhere to turn, they must decide whether to stay and fight the entity or flee before it's too late.

Edward Gross is a writer and veteran entertainment journalist who has written books and articles on film, television, and comic books since the mid-1980s. There was a dearth of new “mainstream” Dark Shadows material available in the 80s, but Ed came to the rescue with the Dark Shadows Files magazine series. He visits the podcast to discuss his lifelong fandom for DS and these memorable Files publications, which included his interviews with many DS cast and crew members such as Jonathan Frid, Grayson & Sam Hall, Art Wallace, Ron Sproat and more. In addition, we take a fun side-trip into Ed's longtime enthusiasm for Superman. Next year marks the 60th anniversary of Dark Shadows. The gothic soap opera wasn't originally intended to include a vampire, but when creator Dan Curtis introduced the character of Barnabas Collins in a last-ditch effort to avoid cancellation, he inadvertently launched a cultural phenomenon. As portrayed by actor Jonathan Frid, the character of Barnabas sparked a never-ending debate among horror fans as to whether vampires should be depicted as pure predators or tragic, misunderstood outcasts. I talk with Danielle Gelehrter (host of the podcast Terror at Collinwood) and authors Mark Dawidziak and Jeff Thompson about why the show had a meteoric rise and fall, what the series reflected about the 1960s, and whether Dark Shadows can have eternal life as a form of IP. A somewhat salty, and possibly insane, Penny Dreadful addresses another batch of DS continuity, plot, character, and canon questions in this episode, inspired by Dale Clark's wonderful Dark Shadows Books of Questions and Answers which were published between 1989 and 1995. In this installment, the following questions are addressed: Would Julia's treatments have permanently cured Barnabas? When Barnabas is in his coffin during the day, is he sleeping and can he be awakened? How does Laura Collins “work”? Was Barnabas destroyed at the end of House of Dark Shadows? Where were Gerard's pirates in 1840? Stagehands in the shot? Mic shadows, boom mics, and cameras in the shot?
