It's August 17th. This day in 1979, a young college student by the name of James Dallas Egber III disappeared into a steam tunnel below his university, intending to commit suicide. But the story of his disappearance became a media - and moral - panic because of his affinity for the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons.Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss what we know and don't know about Egber's troubled life, and why the D&D narrative was so pervasive.Don't forget to sign up for our America250 Watch newsletter, where you'll also get links and lots more historical tidbits.https://thisdaypod.substack.com/Find out more about the show at thisdaypod.comThis Day In Esoteric Political History is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX.Your support helps foster independent, artist-owned podcasts and award-winning stories. If you want to support the show directly, you can do so on our website: ThisDayPod.comGet in touch if you have any ideas for future topics, or just want to say hello. Erin and Bill threw a dragon-themed birthday party for their 1 year old. On the day of the event, Erin was horrified to see the menu that Bill put together. Bill named the food and drink after various things dragons shed, excrete, and throw up. Bill says it was fun. But Erin doesn't want to see another pitcher of Dragon Pee, ever again! Who's right? In this week's episode of Dungeons & Dragons pirate adventure, plans for rebellion take a nautical turn as the Bucs set their sights on the Devil's Arse. What begins as a search for passage spirals into backroom deals, sleeping managers, and the christening of a brand-new vessel with questionable staffing choices. Between suspiciously generous payments, renamed crew members, and a captain chosen by chance, the voyage begins under a banner of barely contained chaos. Will Buoyonce survive her maiden journey? Can the Bucs reach their destination without mutiny... or disaster? And who exactly is steering this ship now? This week on That Would Be Rad, we're diving deep into the legends of American Dragons—winged, scaly nightmares that allegedly terrorized the skies and waterways of the 19th and early 20th century. From a flying serpent that attacked a speeding train in the Colorado Desert, to bulletproof lake monsters, salt-encrusted horse-eaters, and the legendary Tombstone Thunderbird, these tales blur the line between folklore, cryptid encounters, and pure frontier madness. We'll travel coast to coast through historic newspaper accounts, Indigenous legends, and bizarre eyewitness reports that feature everything from flying crocodiles to “pair-odactyls” in California's marshlands. And of course, we'll end with our own theories—trying to decide if these stories are just tall tales… or if dragons really did roam the American West.Grab your six-shooters, keep your eyes on the skies, and BE RAD AND HIT PLAY NOW!RAD WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR SHOW:

Wet Change, sans Del, set out east towards the town of Bree. They happened upon the violent willow tree, decided not to burn it down just yet, and travelled across a difficult landscape until they came across a group of goblins. Not wanting to fight, Tyler and Adam tried to run away, and Guy climbed a tree, but still they were discovered. Adam and Guy threw Baguettes and branches, but it was only the rising sun that had the strange creatures drawing back into cover. As the goblins scrambled away, a strange dog-like man in their camp broke free. Will Adam's stroke of inspiration allow him to calm and befriend this feral beast-man? With Del away on a mysterious adventure of her own, the rest of the troupe rested at Bombadil's house and equipped themselves for the task ahead. Tolkien gave Tyler a broken sword, Guy had the forethought to ask for food and water, and Adam dressed himself in an improvised hat and poorly-constructed toga. The troupe departed and found themselves naturally taking on specific roles within the group: Tyler as the Guide, Adam as the resourceful Hunter, and Guy as the observant Scout. They've been warned to stay off the main road, but can Wet Change avoid the Black Rider, survive the trek to Bree, and find the ringbearer at The Prancing Pony? Our August episode has been delayed, so here's a bonus episode in which Ben talks about some of the books on his Pratchett shelf that won't get their own episode! You can find all the books mentioned in this episode in the Books index on our website. Some brief notes on this episode: A “shelfie” is a photo of one's shelf of books or board games, usually shared online. The tie-in books Ben mentions are Where's My Cow (see #Pratchat62, “There's a Cow in There”), The World of Poo (as referenced in Snuff), Mrs Bradshaw's Guide and Dodger's Guide to London (see #Pratchat6, “A Load of Old Tosh”). The published official Discworld maps are The Streets of Ankh-Morpork, The Discworld Mappe, Death's Domain, A Tourist Guide to Lancre (now out of print), The Mappa Discworld, and the books The Compleat Ankh-Morpork and The Compleat Discworld Atlas. There's also a newer one Ben forgot: The Unreal Guide to Unseen University. Paul Kidby's first Discworld art book was The Pratchett Portfolio. It was followed by The Art of Discworld (the one with the “Mona Ogg” on the cover) in 2001. Turtles All the Way Down was Marc Burrows' companion volume for his biography The Magic of Terry Pratchett. It's currently sold out, as is Tales From Roundworld, the collection of Pratchett rarities he gave away at early performances of his live show based on the biography. Only the first four Discworld plays - the three Ben mentions, plus Wyrd Sisters - were published by Corgi. Fourteen more have been published by Methuen Drama (Bloomsbury), three by Oxford University Press, and three by Samuel French (Concord Theatricals). Find out more on Stephen Briggs' website. The public version of our video episode about the two versions of The Carpet People is on YouTube. Mr Bunnsy Has an Adventure was published as a tie-in to The Amazing Maurice film, and was available from the official website. It's still there, but can't be ordered; presumably it is now out of print and out of stock.I It turns out The Nac Mac Feegle's Big Wee Alphabet Book is back in stock! (Though postage to Australia costs more than the book.) Please don't buy up all the copies before we get a few, ye ken? Big thanks to listener Emily for the tip-off! The new collections of Pratchett's early children's stories are quite different to the previous ones. Tales of Wizards and Dragons and Tales of Beasts and Bugs each collect a handful of stories with full colour illustrations by Pratchett children's illustration Mark Beech. They're new this year from Puffin, and so aimed at a younger audience. Beasts and Bugs comes out at the end of August 2025. We'll be back soon (hopefully later this month) with #Pratchat88, our episode about Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch and Designing Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

A candy dungeon, a dragon cult, and a bag that eats you—what could go wrong? You asked. We delved. You can now listen to past and present episodes of the RPGBOT.Podcast on YouTube! Whether you're deep cleaning your dice bag or prepping tonight's game, catch every optimization hot take and dragon-fueled derailment in high-def audio (and our beautiful logo in glorious static 1080p). Subscribe at YouTube.com/@RPGBOT — because dragons sound better at 1.25x speed. Episode Summary: The RPGBOT crew cracks open Dungeon Delves, the newest D&D 5E adventure anthology packed full of dragons, dungeons, and just enough whimsy to leave your party questioning reality. From solo player escapades to pastry-themed peril, the hosts review each of the anthology's adventures, exploring what works, what doesn't, and what got eaten by a Bag of Devouring. Spoiler alert: It's not just gear. Along the way, they celebrate user-friendly design, lament undercooked storylines, and argue over which dragon deserves to headline the next Broadway musical. Art and Arcana (affiliate link) Dragon Delves (affiliate link) Fizban's Treasury of Dragons (affiliate link) Key Takeaways: Adventure anthologies are great modular tools for GMs looking to plug-and-play without months of prep. Solo character adventures introduce exciting mechanical wrinkles and make a case for letting that one friend who always plays rogues just go for it. Hoard magic items are flavorful, fun, and make players feel very important. Art and layout are top-tier. Even the dragons look like they moisturize. Death at Sunset and The Will of Orcus are clear standouts—fun, well-paced, and full of dragon drama. A Copper for a Song and Sandstone City left the crew hungry for more danger and depth (and less polite puzzle-solving). Good adventure design balances meaningful player choices with challenge. Not every dungeon needs a TPK, but it should at least try. Remember: If a Bag of Devouring starts to wiggle, you're already dead. Í byrjun níunda áratugar varð vart undarlegrar vænisýki sem breyddist frá úthverfum Bandaríkjanna og var skyndilega á allra vörum. Það var hið svokallaða "Satanic Panic" sem sumir telja undanfara QAnon. Hræðslan beindist öll inn á við. Kenningar flugu um að Dungeons og Dragons hlutverkaspilið væri verkfæri Satans. Tölvuleikir voru að sækja í sig veðrið á þessum tíma og spilasalir spruttu upp. Hræðslan beindist einnig að þeim en þó virtust hörðustu samsæriskenningasmiðir sammála um að þarna væri Satan saklaus. Í gegnum tölvuleiki var það ríkisstjórnin eða leyniþjónustan sem stjórnaði. Allra alræmdasti leikurinn er án nokkurs efa Polybius. Finndu þér miða á túrinn okkar um landið hér. In this week's episode of Dungeons & Dragons pirate adventure, the Bucs reconvene with hangovers, half-truths, and a suspicious trail of gold coins leading straight back to BoB. As secrets slip and lies collapse under even light questioning, the crew regroups at the Magic Box for a long-awaited meeting with a certain grey-bearded eccentric. Potions are discussed, identities swapped by force, and one godly voice whispers something Malrus might not have been ready to hear. What does Alatar truly know about the coming storm? Why does the map lead to the Devil's Arse? And how many sleep spells does it take to fix a Malrus? There's only one way to find out, grab your Dnd Dice, join Tom (Keth), Paul (Milo), Alex (Derek), Chip (Jeff), and Sophie (River), led by James (the Dungeon Master) and Roll Britannia. Here at D&SD Over the Summer on Wednesdays we will be releasing some of our cool side campaign episodes! This series is called “The Playa Rose” is a western campaign DM'd by our Very own Andrew Kornblatt. Tunnels, Traps, and Musical Nightmares With the party split, we follow the defenders at Trail's homestead as they prepare for the Pusheen Brothers' promised return. The trio hatches an elaborate three-part defense plan: Ol' Mac D will dig an escape tunnel system to the bottom of the gorge (complete with traps and dead ends), they'll create pit traps spiked with hallucinogenic cactus needles, and manufacture crude flash-bang grenades. Mac D's tunnel-digging reveals an existing underground passage system, adding mystery to their defensive preparations. As they take a midday siesta on the porch during the blazing heat, Marshal hears haunting music approaching. When he investigates, he finds four musicians playing an eerie tune that raises his hackles - but when he turns to warn the others, both the music and the musicians have vanished. The psychological warfare begins as the music returns, audible to all. Those who speak Abyssal understand the sinister lyrics. For a full hour, the otherworldly melodies assault their minds, requiring periodic Charisma checks to resist the supernatural influence. The music creates an atmosphere of dread and anticipation, setting the stage for the coming battle. Please support Dugongs & Sea Dragons on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/DugongsAndSeadragons
