Meet FranBubbie (Franchise Grandmother) Lori Shaffron, Senior Director of Franchise Sales of Rita's Italian Ice, has been in the world of franchising since 1989.. Lori loves franchising, networking, mentoring, and volunteering. And it shows. Everyone knows the FranBubbie of Franchising. A term of endearment Brad Fishman, of Fishman PR coined. It became official when Edith Wiseman, of FranData gifted Lori with her very own FranBubbie t-shirt. Like many Bubbies, Lori is strong-willed, unabashedly opinionated, and tender-hearted. If ever there was someone who could wear all the hats within a franchise organization it is Lori. From marketing to operations, to finance, to training and beyond, Lori has done it all. But her true bailiwick is franchise development. Listen to the adventures of Lori Shaffron on this episode of The Franchise Woman podcast.

Nick Davies, independent journalist, a researcher with CODEPINK, and the author of Blood On Our Hands: The American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq, talks to us about how 23 out of 30 obama officials who signed a mea culpa letter over U.S. policy in Yemen are now in the Biden administration and are singing a different tune regarding the latest Israeli assault on Gaza, and whether we will see a different approach from the U.S. after rifts within the democratic party over weapons sales to Israel and continuing pressure to demand a ceasefire in the conflict. Quique Avilés, poet, actor, and community activist, joins us in a conversation about the Mount Pleasant uprising in Washington DC that took place 30 years ago, what the neighborhood has meant to the Latinx community as a hub where individuals and families connected, how continued harassing by the police was one of the main drivers of the uprising, whether the remedies proposed by the city government after the uprising solved any of the underlying issues, and about how hard it has become for working class black and brown communities to remain in their neighborhoods due to gentrification. Dan Lazare, journalist and author talks to us about what happens when journalists rely on private intelligence agencies for information, how the Biden administration’s foreign policy is developing, with US Secretary of State Tony Blinken meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for the first time since Biden took office and turning all its diplomatic firepower on China, and whether this could lead to better relations with Russia. We also talk about efforts by Congress to keep investigating the January 6 riots, and efforts to permanently increase security measures around the Capitol.Shaun Sharkey and Chef Margaux Riccio, founders of Bubbies Plant Burgers, Plant Food Lab and Pow Pow join hosts Michelle Witte and Bob Schlehuber on our Trends with Benefits segment to talk about how plant based diets are on the rise, with many restaurants ditching meat all together, and whether this is the direction that restaurants will be taking in the future.
The new shows keep rolling in, and Dylan and Bari kick off the episode by discussing the new season of Shahs of Sunset. They also stress about rumors Teddi Mellencamp is getting her own show, and review the trailer for Bethenny’s new Apprentice knockoff show. Then, they get into their recaps of RHONJ and RHOD. While Jersey is making them feel all the feels, Dallas is making them feel… nothing. You can buy SkinnyPop at retailers nationwide, or go to the Shop Now page on skinnypop.com
Yael really knows her stuff. Which is not surprising, since she pretty much created the framework for digital communications in the public sector from scratch. Follow her @yaelbt. After the Jewish cabal of Yael and Ileana invite Garrett to "lean in" and join the conversation, the trio discuss finding community, contextualize the use and usefulness of social media, and reassure Bubbies everywhere that the Fifth Column community is not a cult. Oy vey.
Sometimes, time moves by unbearably slow. Days are filled with work, waiting, and then more waiting. Don't you ever wish that you could fast forward to the exciting parts of life and skip past the boring minutes - or years? That's what the main character in Dolores Hydock's “The Golden Ball” wishes for, and at first, he couldn't be more delighted! However, over time, he finds that he begins to long for the quiet moments he once thought so dreadful. Will he ever get a chance to enjoy the peaceful passing of life once again? We'll find out today as well as hearing stories from Donna Washington, Mark Binder, and Jenni Cargill-Strong. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“The Golden Ball” by Dolores Hydock from Once In A Blue Moon (22:14)Dolores Hydock is an actress and storyteller having performed and received awards all over the country. In this story, an impatient young boy is given a golden ball by a mysterious old woman that helps him skip past the mundane moments of life. “Epaminandus” by Donna Washington from Fun, Foolerly, and Folktales (13:16)Donna Washington grew up as an army brat, traveling all over the world and collecting tales as she went. In this tale, Epaminandus is a young boy who gets sent to his grandmother's house when he's simply too much for his mother to handle. I'm sure many mothers out there can relate and be grateful to grandparents for helping out with their children. However, when Epaminandus's grandmother sends him home with a gift, he always finds a way to mess it up before it reaches his mother. But this won't stop his family from loving him anyway. “Goldylocks” by Mark Binder from A Chanukah Present (6:50)Mark Binder is an author and storyteller with more than 20 published books and 20 years of performance experience. Today he shares with us his telling of “Goldylocks”, but instead of Goldylocks running into a house of three bears, she wonders into a house of three bubbies. Bubbies, for those who don't know, are grandmothers! So this story both playfully and lovingly reflects many things we find so unique and wonderful about our own grandmothers. “With My Own Two Hands” by Jenni Cargill-Strong from Reaching For the Moon (3:04)Jenni Cargill-Strong is a storyteller who believes in the power of storytelling to make the world a better place. This song is about how much of a positive impact one person can make.

I have my containers going strong until lockdown came about, and now I'm with the kids 24/7 I've fallen off and struggling to get back to my containers. As I'm typing this, I'm realizing my containers weren't as strong as I thought. Greg, I'm going to challenge you right now. I bet your containers were stronger than you thought and you're looking for a backdoor out of them because a container isn't. I'm going to do my practice at 8:00 AM, and if I can't do it at 8:00 AM I don't do it at containers. I'm going to do my practice every day and I'm going to reinvent myself as many times as required until that can be done. So, for example, my normal morning practice before isolation was I would get up and spent two hours in silence before the kids even woke up. And then the kids went to school. So I had an hour of people time, and then I went right into another two hours of solitude. Well, guess what? The kids aren't going to school and that's not happening and so from 6:00 AM on, I'm with the kids. And so now my solitude isn't as much, but now what happens is I wake up a half an hour before my son and take my solitude. Then I get my son awake when he wakes up. I go downstairs and I have now involved him in my process, and so I fill his tank. I get him settled in. I said, Hey, Bubbies, it's daddy's time to do breath work so you can breathe with me and he's three. You can breathe in the air or you can just watch daddy. If you talk to me, bubbies it's going to take me a couple minutes to respond. And then I put the practice in and Tyler will tell you as you walk around, all I have to do is look at my son and take a deep breath, and he'll start breathing with me. Three years old. He'll be whiny. He'll be needy. He'll be codependent for a minute. He'll, bump his knee and want to start crying. And I look at him and I just say breath, and I'll go.So I took my practice. That was very structured, and I realized that the wind is taking that practice and putting it into my whole life and putting it into practice. So if it's a rigid practice, that's not a practice. It's control. It's a practice the moment you take it, and you'll utilize it in life where it happens. Because practices are easy under ideal conditions. Like going to the gym is great when you can go to the gym. Like eating clean is great when you have a chef that makes your meals five times a day and you live in a controlled environment.Like work is amazing when everything is always growing and there's money coming in. That's not practice. That's ideal circumstances. We don't practice for the easy times. We practice for the challenging times, and so the practices now on the times of resistance or challenge or fear, how do I embody this practice and make it a part of my day and let go of the rigidity of what it looked like? So what am I nonnegotiables that day? My non-negotiables are breathwork. My non-negotiables are writing in my journal. While I can't do them at six, same. Great. I can do them plenty of other times. Like my non-negotiable three weeks ago is I had to go to the gym before I worked. I had to. And so that will be my 90 minutes of me time and solitude and silence.Well, now I'm doing bodyweight stuff and I have it at home, and I've fallen in love with the fact that instead of working out for an hour and a half, I work out 15 times a day for five minutes each. And so this is where the magic happens. Like what's happening right now is we're being called to grow. We're being called to deepen our practice and remember that our practice isn't what it looks like on paper. Mike Tyson says this all the time. Smartest guy ever, but he has a plan to get punched in the face. Well, guess what? Everybody just got punched in the face. So what? He didn't get knocked out. He just got punched in the face. You're like, that hurt. Well, how do you prep for next time? You practice, you practice more. And listen, a practice that's easy isn't a practice. It's complacent. Practice is, should be uncomfortable. They should be challenging. That's where the growth comes in. So Greg, welcome to leveling up a hundred levels in life, brother. Cause I know what you're doing. And Veronica is working full time at the hospital, supporting everybody through these crazy times than you are being a single dad of kids. Well, running a business well in a apartment, handling all of it. and what an opportunity to deepen your practice. What an opportunity to deepen breath, deepen patience, deepen self-forgiveness, lead by example. What an opportunity, and here's what I know, Greg. It's going to force you to not do bullshit tasks anymore. Cause there's no time. And every minimum wage activity is going to be out of your life. And I had this call earlier with people, and this isn't for Greg's question, phone call, like, I'm so uncertain. And I was like, you've been this uncertain for six months. The universe has pulled the plug and said, well, it's time you do something about it.So you can look at these situations and you can be like, Oh my God, what am I going to do? Or you can look at and be like, what an opportunity because here's the truth. If in these moments of uncertain times, and like just full disclosure right now, and I mean full disclosure between three companies that I own, we're losing $40,000 a day as we speak.Like, look at me. I am currently losing $40,000 a day. I don't have millions of dollars in the bank. We have multimillion dollar businesses and every dollar goes into the business. We haven't laid one person off. We haven't fired anybody. The only people who took pay cuts were me and the founders. That's it. And. It's temporary. Right? I have just as much fear and anxiety and doubt as anybody and I look at it and I see so much opportunity. This too shall pass. Will business ever be the same? No. It'll be new. Just like when the internet came along, right. Cause I'm pretty sure the guy that was selling horses love that than Henry Ford invented the car.Let that one sink in. Like I'm pretty sure that all those businesses that were making all their money with direct mail and catalogs loved when the internet came. You remember when people used to sell CDs and then MP3s came on. Your remember when people used to buy albums, but then monthly memberships came and unlimited streaming.Remember when people used to go rent DVDs and then Netflix came. And you want to know what's funny is blockbuster had the ability to buy Netflix for I think like 11 or $12 million, and they said, no, this will never be the future. There's only one blockbuster left in the country. It's independently owned. There's a shift happening. There's a shift in the way business is being done. There's a shift in the way life is being done, and I said this from day one. What was my biggest fear in isolation in lockdown in quarantine was spending more time with myself and potentially having to come to the sober realization that I really still didn't love myself and I was going to be forced into a relationship with the one person I get to spend the rest of my life with, whether I like it or not, and that's myself. That's my only fear. Everything else can be recreated. Everything can be rebuilt, everything can be redone, everything can be done differently. There's opportunity abound. The self-practice is the most important practice, and if we need, if we want, and one of my teachers in which, my business partner, Stefano said this to our mentors group, in order to deepen your service, you must deepen your practice.Serving isn't giving more to the world. Serving is giving more to yourself so you have the capacity to hold more and give more to the world. And so Greg, thank you for that amazing question, brother. I'm proud of you and I'm super stoked to know you, especially after not talking to you for 20 years cause I missed you brother. So without further ado, listen to this a couple of times. Deep dive into this and master the ways to manage time with your children versus time in your business.

Part 2: Beat Cancer Board Member Emeritus Andrea Anderson with Nutrition Commission, Talks About ‘Learning How To Eat in a Healthy Way After A Cancer Diagnosis' Following Andrea Anderson's aggressive Stage 2B / Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis while pregnant, she was faced with 42 years of eating habits that needed to be changed. Listen to this podcast to learn how Andrea navigated changing her eating habits, addressing the emotional needs behind her cravings, and structuring a plan to keep her on track. She is also sharing her daily juice and salad here: 2:38 My friend wanted me to watch The Truth About Cancer. I watched all 9 part docuseries I learned about chemotherapy and the industry and I learned how food could heal. 3:43 Foods have the power to heal. In parallel, I was doing oncology and made an appointment with the Cancer Center For New Medicine because I heard their name on The Truth About Cancer Docuseries. 4:20 The foods that I ate as a kid with my family, the way we treated food, it was comfort and pleasure. Now I was introduced to food as medicine and in the state of chronic illness it's about the therapeutic benefits of food. 5:06 I read The Anti-Cancer A New Way of Life book that became a guide for me. 5:43 I gave birth in July 2015 and my mother-in-law from Greece came and she was a big piece in learning how to cook veggies and how delicious they are with extra virgin olive oil, lemon and oregano, salt and pepper. It was exactly what my body needed. 7:34 I was juicing every day, first getting it from whole foods and flooding my body to make it alkaline and detoxing from chemotherapy at the same time. I was also taking baby steps to take out sugar, grains, alcohol. 9:43 Detoxing was also a big part of this with coffee enemas. I didn't feel as sick as other people I've heard were. I bounced back after 2 days of every treatment. I was eating organic, good quality food. 11:37 I was feeling hungry and burned out. I didn't know what to eat. 13:33 I did a slew of testing. I was taking about 60 supplements and did micronutrients testing, mitochondrial function testing, and a toxicity test for heavy metals. My A1C was good but nutritionally I still wasn't good. This is where candida, parasites, and the gut health comes into it. 16:03 I felt like I was developing an eating disorder, orthorexia. People with chronic illness and cancer know they need to pivot and eat differently, but I almost wasn't eating at all because I couldn't get past the do not eat list. 19:17 I came across Chris Wark's work. He healed with food and figured out how to make it simple. He taught me the trick of how to eat the same things every day. My life transformed at this point. I was focused on what I should eat and how to make it delicious. I incorporate different fats, textures, and the sweet and the creamy. It's very low maintenance. 24:10 Half my plate is loaded with veggies, 1/4 of my plate is a protein source, and then the remaining is for olives or beans or complex carbs. I do olive oil on veggies and I cook with coconut oil in good cookware. 27:44 The sugar cravings were the toughest thing to battle. What worked for me was Bulletproof coffee with coconut oil and grass fed butter. I would do Intermittent fasting until 10-11am and break the fast with green juice. 31:25 You have to stop and think about what is fueling your desire for the food. I would look at food and say, why do I need this? What am I feeding? Do I need self care? A walk, a sauna, a hug? Slow down and connect with what's behind the behavior. 36:47 I did coffee enemas 3 to 4 times a week, especially if I had strong cravings. 40:50 I have not felt like crap in the afternoon anymore because I eat a salad every day. 41:41 We didn't go out to eat a lot. 43:22 I lifted the load of perfection because that made me sick, like eating disorder mentality. But I'm very careful about my habits. 47:28 You don't want to put harmful things into your body and if you keep reaching for them you have to dig deeper and ask why do I need this? The urge is so powerful. What is it really about? Do I need to relax? Self-care? A hug? A walk? Reading a book? Mindfulness? Andrea's go-to Green juice in this order! 1 cucumber 2-3 celery stalks 1/2 romaine lettuce 2-3 handfuls of spinach 1/2 - 1 granny smith apple (low glycemic) 1 lemon w/ peel removed 1 ginger piece (about the size of your thumb) - add more if you prefer! My Favorite Combination for Creating my perfectly, delicious Daily Salad! “Andrea's Signature Salad” Lettuces: I like to mix in 2 different lettuces and a few handfuls of each options (spinach, butter lettuce, or arugula) Veggies: Cucumbers + Broccoli Sprouts + Cauliflower Rice + little bit of Green onions (I stick with these all the time!) Crunchy: Nuts. I'll add in either pine nuts, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds. Entirely up to you but ensure they are plain and not store-bought as roasted. Sweet: Fruit (ie, Pomegranates, Blueberries or Strawberries only!) Salty: Roasted Sweet Potatoes cut into cubes – 1 tbspl of olive oil with Garlic Salt + Himalayan Salt + Cooked @ 400 for 45 min. Sauerkraut! I love this stuff! I'll buy Bubbies and put in about ¼ - ½ cup at least. Creates a great texture and ‘juiciness' almost to your salad. Garlic Olives. About 3-4! Creamy: Healthy Fats & Beans. I cut up half of an Avocado + add in a Creamy Dressing Option + 1 tbls of olive oil to the salad to help blend up the creaminess. I make a home-made, dairy-free Caesar Dressing ‘or' sometimes I just a dollop of Avocado Chipotle ‘mayo' from Primal Kitchen to give my salad a creamy kick! Beans. I'll add in a few ‘gigante' beans which are mediterrean style and delicious! But I would limit these to no more than ¼ cup as a protein source to your salad. Toppings: Organic, Hemp Hearts (I'll put in 3 tbsp to get me 10 grams of plant-based protein!) Cheese: Special Occasion - I might add a few sprinkles of organic goat cheese or feta from time to time! Homemade, Dairy-Free, Caesar-like Salad Dressing (without anchovies!)– drop into food processor and blend! (Add 1 tbsp of water if needed to liquify to your liking) 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp Worcester sauce 1 pasture-raised egg ½ cup to ¾ cup olive oil 2 -3 cloves of garlic Salt-

Well the title says it all. To be honest, I've known for a little while but figured I'd sync it up to when we announced to the masses. So yeah, mazels to me. The wife is I think 4 months along, so expect that as time goes on there's gonna be some nerd dad type episodes. It'll be good, don't worry. We did "best movie mom" once, so lets talk "best movie dad" in the next episode. Mostly this was just a chance to talk about/muse on the news. I definitely have the inclusion of some game stuff, because hey that's what we do. Enjoy guys, I'm aiming to see Wreck It 2 soon so please let's all just pray that it's not as disappointing as Crimes of Grindelwald. Also if you were interested, the Podcast I mentioned in episode that I do with my colleague is "Bubbies in Suits" on podcasts.com and iTunes podcasts.Cheers guys, stay warm out there.

CW for this one: sexual assault, trauma, sex talk In this episode, I did something a bit different. I spoke at length with my friend Bee, who lives in Chicago and does a zine called Burn Black (and an upcoming podcast called Big Thick Energy). We've had this idea for a while about doing a special podcast episode where we discuss, openly, about sexual assault/trauma and how it relates to dating, relationships and mental illness. This will be a two part episode. Part 2 coming eventually. The only song played was a special request by Bee. Reagan Youth - "It's A Beautiful Day". Thanks for listening and we hope you like.

ABOUT DEBBIE GOODSTEIN Debbie Goodstein was the writer and director of Voices from the Attic (1988), which was shortlisted for an Academy Award. Voices from the Attic had a limited theatrical release, was broadcast for three years on Israeli television on Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and in the U.S. on the Discovery network. It was widely distributed to schools and religious institutions and—and over 20 years later—it is still being sold at places like the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Goodstein wrote and directed the semi-autobiographical narrative feature Mighty Fine, starring Andie MacDowell and Chazz Palminteri, which was released theatrically in May of 2012 by Lionsgate. In 2013, Mighty Fine had a special Academy screening and was invited to screen at Simon Wiesenthal Center at The Museum of Tolerance in LA, and, most recently, won “Best in Show” at the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto (named one of the top 25 festivals in North America by Movieline Magazine). Goodstein has sold several screenplays to major studios and has numerous other credits in film and television, including: writer for “Saying Kaddish,” which was nominated for a Daytime Emmy; writer/producer for “Growing Up in America” (Fox TV Films); and writer/ producer/ director for “The Bubbies,” a reality show on NBC. She and her cousin Leslie Wolfowitz also wrote and produced the play "Kindergarten Confidential" which was showcased Off Broadway in 2006. ABOUT ECHOES FROM THE ATTIC “Echoes from the Attic” tells the small but epic story spanning 70 years of the shifting, sometimes tense, sometimes distant relationship between two families surviving the Nazi occupation, one Jewish and the other, their Polish rescuers. It is the story of the triumph of an enduring bond forged in war, tempered by compassion and made resilient by love. “Echoes from the Attic" will premiere in Berlin at the end of the month, screening in tandem with its prequel, the academy award shortlisted "Voices from the Attic", in the Asynchronous program dedicated to the remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust. Invited by Arsenal Cinema, the organizers of the Berlinale Forum of the Berlin Film Festival, “Voices” and “Echoes” are two of eleven films invited to be screened in a three-city tour beginning in Berlin and going on to Leipzig and Frankfurt. Our Echoes team has been hard at work all summer getting the film ready for its Berlin debut. Post-production costs along with a final shoot in Poland organized in an effort to dig deeper into guarded family histories, have brought us here to Kickstarter in hopes of covering these costs. After our German tour, we hope to rerelease “Voices” along with “Echoes” theatrically, here at home. “Echoes” will also be distributed as a stand alone at festivals, museums, schools, and eventually to global accessibility online. THE STORY “Echoes from the Attic” is Debbie Goodstein’s follow up to her 1989 documentary “Voices From the Attic” which charted her journey to Poland and the attic where her mother and 15 family members were hidden for two years during the Holocaust. “Voices” features Debbie’s Aunt Sally as she deals head on with the scars she’s carried and the long shadows cast by those harrowing attic years. “Echoes” picks up 23 years later when Aunt Sally announces that, after years of lobbying Israel’s Holocaust Center, Yad Vashem, the late Stanislaw Grocholski, the Polish farmer who gave them shelter, will be awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” honor. Thrilled with this victory, attic survivors and descendants, 27 in all, travel back to Poland to attend the ceremony honoring their hero. But something goes terribly wrong during the ceremony, opening a painful rift between them and the Grocholski family that they are determined to mend. A private meeting with Stanislaw’s eldest daughter, Zosia, reveals the unknown and life-shattering risks her parents took to do the right thing. With Zosia’s revelations, “Echoes” becomes the natural companion piece to “Voices,” shining a bright light on often-overlooked sacrifices, pain and strength of ordinary people of extraordinary heart.
Co-founder of The Ebco and trend consultant, Kalyn Rozanski, stops by to offer a glimpse into the latest trends of running and living a running lifestyle. Serena Marie, RD talks about what prebiotics and probiotics are, why we need them, and how to get probiotics in if you are staying away from dairy. And Runner of the Week, Jen Mitchell, chats about how her running evolved from a motivator to lose weight into the lifelong gift of running. Featured Guest: Kalyn Rozanski Kari speaks to trend researcher and co-founder of The Ebco, Kalyn Rozanski, to see what you can look forward to when you go to your next race expo, see an advertisement in Runner's World, or see a TV commercial about the latest running apparel. Gives some background on how she distinguishes a trend (which has a longer life span of three to ten years) from a fad (which is short lived) and how to validate a trend Covers the trends that will impact the running community in the future Looks at all types of industries and across different consumer groups “The gift of running” trends include the following: o Micro-communities or “do it with me” (DIWM) groups—including all generations (for example, the ElliptiGO® Facebook group and meet-up groups), and brands growing and evolving due to consumer interaction (for example, Sketchers, Kayla Itsines with “Kayla's Army”, TRLS apparel, or the FitBit community) o “Athleisure” wear—involving the combination of athletic and leisure wear for women (which is the only thing driving the US retail growth right now, and more women are regularly wearing Lycra® right now than jeans); this includes brands like Lululemon, Athletica, Under Armour, and Ann Taylor Loft; includes new business models of physical to digital convergence like 45 Grand, Warby Parker, a Birchbox showroom, and SoulCycle o The experience economy (like ultramarathons or mud runs)—purchasing the product and also the outcome that it provides o Intention-based or conscious living—wanting life experiences to be more mindful; mentions The Desire Map: A Guide to Creating Goals with Soul by Danielle LaPorte and Hunter Clarke-Fields from “Special Mindful Monday W/ Kim Stemple, Founder Of We Finish Together” (Episode 103) Austin, Portland, and Washington, DC are made up of more than 50 percent millennials Worth-the-money experiences: a Maui and Kauai trip (think paddle board yoga and helicopter rides); a Costa Rican yoga and surf retreat for women only Some of her favorite retreats include the following: o http://yogascapes.com/ o http://www.surfgoddessretreats.com/ o https://www.bookyogaretreats.com o http://www.yogiapproved.com/health-wellness/5-fantastic-yoga-retreats-that-wont-break-the-bank/ Jabra A new month equals a new chance to win! March's winner will also receive an exciting thirty-minute Skype call with Kari. She loves the Pulse model because it's wireless, has superior sound quality, and includes in-ear heart rate monitoring. Don't miss next week's episode, because Kari will announce February's winner! Runner of the Week: Jen Mitchell Kari got the chance to meet Jen Mitchell in person at the Jeff Galloway Race Weekend in Atlanta, GA. Initially, running was about losing weight for Jen, but it evolved into the gift of running. Led a very unhealthy, sedentary life until she was in her late 20s (loved books, watching TV, chips, and soda) Lost weight seven years ago and started running because she thought that was the best way to lose weight Loved the way she felt when she ran, so with the encouragement of friends and the Couch to 5K program, her first race was a 10K Feels that being active has given her more out of life Biggest Loser contest at work spurred her to really change her life Loves the support and camaraderie of running and the “tribe mentality”—just like the episode titled, “Bart Yasso: Running around the World with Lyme Disease” (Episode 34) Gives a shout out to Edgar Perez from Florida! Serena Marie, RD Serena Marie, RD, talks about probiotics specifically for people who are choosing not to consume dairy. The Book of the Month is Super Genes: Unlock the Astonishing Power of Your DNA for Optimum Health and Well-Being, and the authors talk a lot about probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria that live in your colon, and different strains have different benefits. In pill form, the dose is high, but the number of strains is limited. In food form, you can get a larger number of strains. Common probiotic foods include yogurt (which has a limited number of strains), kefir (a yogurt drink). Probiotics are born from the fermentation process. A diet rich in grains helps to support “bad” strains of bacteria. Probiotics have been linked to preventing gastrointestinal distress, with regulating moods, and strongly correlated with boosting immunity, and so on. For non-dairy users, you can make fermented pickles, refrigerated sauerkraut like Bubbies and Farmhouse Culture, fermented veggies, kimchi, kombucha, fermented ketchup or chutney, and organic fermented soy products. Check out Serena's blog post titled, “USE #REALFOOD (PROBIOTICS!!) TO BATTLE DEPRESSION #BUHBYEWINTERBLUES”. Prebiotic is the fiber that the bacteria eat.
