Katrina Leung, code name Parlor Maid, received nearly two million dollars from the FBI for being their top China informant. But little did the Bureau know… she was a double agent, collecting intelligence for China's Ministry of State Security. Not only that, she was also sleeping with her FBI handler, James J. Smith (J.J.). For nearly two decades, J.J. covered up reports that raised red flags about her. That's where retired FBI agent Steven Conley comes in. He worked for J.J. in the LA field office and then became Katrina's new handler, and soon realized she wasn't exactly providing useful information. Ultimately, he helped extract two painful confessions in a case that damaged the FBI's reputation for years.  Subscribe to Sasha's Substack, HUMINT, to get more intelligence stories: https://sashaingber.substack.com/ For more information about the International Spy Museum, visit:  https://www.spymuseum.org/ And if you have feedback or want to hear about a particular topic,  you can reach us by email at spycast@spymuseum.org. WKC Toy Group Winning Handler Tim Lehman on Campaigning a Maltese and Drop-Coat Excellence Fresh off his Toy Group win at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Tim Lehman joins Pure Dog Talk to share the story behind Cookie, the breathtaking Maltese who captured hearts at the Garden. From a childhood obsession sparked in a Minnesota library to standing in the Best in Show lineup under the spotlight at Madison Square Garden, Tim's journey is a testament to mentorship, meticulous coat care, purposeful breeding and staying in the path of kindness. Lehman, a self-described “boutique handler,” takes us behind the scenes of campaigning Cookie, the exquisite Maltese who finished the year as the Number 4 Toy Dog—all on a limited schedule of fewer than 50 shows. Tim shares how balance—between his career as a hairstylist and his life with dogs—has shaped his approach to showing, conditioning and long-term success. [caption id="attachment_15212" align="alignleft" width="446"] Who says show dogs aren't real dogs?! Cookie is all wrapped up and playing with her favorite ball.[/caption] We dive deep into the art and science of maintaining a drop coat at the highest level. Maltese coat care is not about secret products or miracle sprays. According to Tim, it's about daily vigilance, disciplined wrapping, gentle grooming and knowing when to pull back. “Virgin hair,” as he calls it, is preserved through consistency and restraint. From bathing routines to managing coat breakage in four-day show weekends, Tim explains why what happens at home matters more than what happens ringside. The conversation also explores preservation breeding in action. Cookie represents six generations of intentional, thoughtful breeding—with multiple national specialty winners behind her. Tim discusses collaborating (and occasionally disagreeing!) with breeder Tammy Simon, the value of speaking your truth in breeding decisions, and the reality that even carefully planned breedings can produce surprises. In Maltese, where structure matures slowly and the coat requires years of commitment, patience may be the greatest virtue of all. We also talk about mentorship. Tim credits his early years working for the legendary Peggy Hogg for shaping his technical skills and eye for detail. His advice for aspiring drop-coat...

She explains why trust, clear communication, and mastering the "go" and "stop" are more effective than mechanical, frantic handling. Julie shares practical tips for training young and experienced dogs: avoid over-tweaking at the line, build momentum with long blinds, practice stopping and casting clearly, and steadily develop a conversational bond so your dog understands and trusts your direction. https://youtu.be/yBHJzQCG1XY https://youtu.be/5TdUWX91FuM

We hear elite athletes say it all the time: “I wanted it more, so I worked harder.” But for most competitors, that advice is incomplete — and sometimes exhausting. In this episode, I break down what “working harder” actually looks like at high levels of sport, why effort alone isn't the edge, and how identity quietly shapes the way we train. We'll talk about falling in love with the work, training with intention, and what it really means to train as the handler you're becoming — not just the one you feel like today. If you've ever felt like you're already doing everything you can, this episode will help you see your training through a more useful lens.

After 9/11, Harry Handler decided to explore this inheritance to see whether he could learn more about his grandfather's life. The lie? Those mechs are piloted by the 86, people stripped of their humanity and sent to die in machines while the privileged sit safe behind walls. At the center is Shinei Nouzen, the "Undertaker" squadron leader who's seen too many comrades fall, and Vladilena Milizé, the Handler who refuses to see the 86 as disposable. It's about the cost of war, the weight of survival, and what it means to truly see someone as human. Let's dive right in and explore why the concept of white privilege has cemented itself in our conversations around race and inequality. A big part of this shift can be traced back to how media and popular culture have shaped public ideas and perceptions.Take MTV's documentary "White People," released in 2015. This film, directed by Jose Antonio Vargas, focused specifically on the experiences of white millennials, sparking dialogues across the nation about what it means to live with privilege. It opened a window into personal stories and challenged viewers, especially young white people, to examine biases they might not have previously considered. By putting a spotlight on something that many people felt uncomfortable discussing, it stimulated conversations that many communities needed to have. Then there's comedian Chelsea Handler, who took a unique approach in her 2019 Netflix documentary, "Hello, Privilege. It's Me, Chelsea." Handler used her humor and personal narrative to dissect the nuances of white privilege in her own life. The documentary resonated widely, pushing the conversation into the realm of entertainment where many might not expect to encounter such serious topics. It illustrated how media can not only entertain but also educate and inform.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/racism-white-privilege-in-america--4473713/support.

Legendary Handler Andy Linton on Quality, Conditioning and Presentation [caption id="attachment_15022" align="alignleft" width="338"] Andy and Penny shine at the DPCA Top 20.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves sits down one-on-one with legendary professional handler Andy Linton for an in-depth conversation about a lifetime in the sport. From his beginnings as a Southern California teenager more interested in surfing than dog shows, to handling some of the most iconic Best in Show winners in history — including Indy winning BIS at Westminster Kennel Club — Andy shares the experiences, lessons and mindset that shaped his extraordinary career. Andy walks listeners through his early days showing a Doberman in the 1970s, learning the ropes by working for top handlers and absorbing invaluable lessons from mentors like Clay Coady, Tim Brazier, Bob and Jane Forsyth, and others. He reflects on the importance of watching, learning and stealing the best ideas — not just how handlers move dogs, but why certain techniques change balance, expression and overall picture in the ring. For Andy, success has never been accidental. It's the result of dreaming big, setting clear goals and backing those dreams with relentless effort and self-reflection. Central to the conversation is Andy's core philosophy of winning: quality, condition and presentation. He explains why even a modest dog can dramatically improve — or undermine — its chances depending on conditioning and handling, and why exhibitors should focus on improving their own skills rather than blaming judges or competition. Conditioning, Andy emphasizes, isn't about one-size-fits-all roadwork, but tailoring fitness to each dog's structure and needs while keeping them happy, healthy and enthusiastic about their job. The discussion also dives into Andy's trademark quiet hands and free-stacking style, emphasizing trust, simplicity and making the ring feel as relaxed as a dog waiting for a sandwich in the kitchen. He shares practical insight into situational awareness, reading judges, selling a dog's strengths with integrity, and mastering the small details that can make all the difference at high-pressure events like Westminster. Beyond the ring, Andy reflects on his role advising breeding programs, watching generational changes in breeds, and helping create great dogs behind the scenes. He also speaks candidly about mentorship, gratitude, and the dog show community, sharing heartfelt thoughts on kindness, legacy and staying engaged in the sport he loves. This episode is packed with timeless wisdom for breeders, owner-handlers and professionals who want to elevate their dogs — and themselves — in the world of purebred dogs.

Chelsea Handler is on Celebrity Jobber with Jeff Zito this week. What type of work would Chelsea be doing if not for being a comedian, actress, writer, producer, and television host, known for her bawdy style and late-night talk shows? Many celebrities will tell you that if not for that one lucky break or meeting, they would have been working at McDonald's, like Rachel McAdams, or a grocery clerk like Cardi B. In other words, they may have been just a jobber.

In this groundbreaking episode, I sit down with John Grey, a law enforcement K9 handler who's doing the "impossible" - running a program with PUPPIES that are BOTH therapy dogs AND detection dogs (firearms/explosives).The traditional K9 world said this would never work:❌ "Puppies have too high a washout rate"❌ "Therapy dogs are low-drive couch potatoes"❌ "Labs can't detect anything"❌ "You can't do both - pick one"John's program is proving all of that WRONG.What We Cover:Why their puppy washout rate is LOWER than agencies buying adult dogsHow therapy work actually IMPROVES detection capabilityTraining while working (no pulling officers off the road)The massive PR and funding benefits agencies don't expectUsing rituals and signals to switch between therapy and detection modesWhy "crackhead" high-drive dogs are actually HARDER to work withHow obedience training makes detection dogs betterWorking in elementary through high schoolsAdding tracking to the mix (and the lessons learned)Why this ISN'T entrapment (they're NOT drug dogs)Real Results:✅ Lower washout rates than traditional programs✅ Enormous public support and funding✅ Dogs work effectively in both roles✅ Handlers train while maintaining regular SRO duties✅ Kids and community fully invested in the dogsJohn's agency is in Colorado, and they're working with organizations like Colorado Police K9 Association who now offer therapy dog certification. His company is Fundamentals First K9 Training and he's helping other agencies implement similar programs. This episode challenges EVERYTHING traditional K9 programs believe about drive, selection, training timelines, and what's "possible" with working dogs.Whether you're in law enforcement, education, or just love working dogs, this conversation will change how you think about K9 programs.
