Today, we have a truly inspiring guest joining us from the heart of the jungle in Costa Rica. She's the director of the Renaissance Institute (iREN), a trailblazing educational program that is redefining how we approach learning for all students, especially those with learning differences. We're excited to dive deep into her insights and experiences on how she combines neuroscience, psychology, and pedagogy to create a transformative learning environment. Sylvia's journey began in 2020 when she established a small homeschool for teenagers to help them navigate distance learning during the pandemic. This initiative quickly grew into the Renaissance Institute, a unique educational environment in beautiful Costa Rica.  Throughout our conversation, Sylvia will share her motivations and the personal experiences that drove her to build this unique program. She created the kind of educational environment she wished she had as a child, which resonates deeply with many parents today. We'll explore how differentiation and a sense of safety are crucial in education, yet often missing. Sylvia believes in creating spaces where students feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them, an essential component in fostering resilience. By the end of this episode, you'll have a new perspective on how education can be transformed to meet the needs of every child. Sylvia's story is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset and approach, we can create learning environments that not only educate but also heal and empower our students.   Show Notes: [2:17] - It is a time of real opportunity for change in education right now. [3:18] - Sylvia describes the motivations she has had in building this unique learning environment in Costa Rica. [5:05] - In 2020, Sylvia established a small homeschool for teenagers in Costa Rica to help them navigate through distance learning. It grew into iREN. [8:01] - Students are highly involved in creating and establishing their own learning environment in a way that establishes trust. [10:12] - It is important for the attention to be given to the students who are doing the right thing. A lot of neurodivergent students are accustomed to being yelled at. [12:09] - Sylvia has created the program that she wished she had had as a child. Many parents feel the same way. [13:40] - Differentiation is important, but we can't differentiate so much that there is no normalcy. [15:11] - Another missing piece in education is love and a sense of safety. [17:57] - Create a space where students can make mistakes. [20:50] - Students want to learn impulse control but often feel like they can't. [23:47] - It is a reality that many parents are afraid of their child and fearful that they cannot support them. [26:33] - What brings a student happiness? Can we create a sense of acceptance and well-being where a child feels happy in their learning environment? [27:50] - Diagnoses are important, but many people focus on the negatives which creates a sense of hopelessness. [30:10] - Sylvia is confident that healing herself and changing her own mindset was the first step in creating iREN for students and families. [34:01] - Children are struggling, which is what it all boils down to. What can we do? [38:10] - Grades do not typically motivate a student. Parents care more about grades than students do. We need to help students find their intrinsic motivation.   About Our Guest: Sylvia serves as the founder and director of the Renaissance Institute in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Established in 2020, the Renaissance Institute (iREN) aims to engage children beyond screens by inviting them to explore a 33-acre forested campus. iREN integrates neuroscience, psychology, and pedagogy to unleash the potential of children facing challenges. The program prioritizes children's social-emotional requirements, cultivating resilience and hands-on learning tailored to each child's unique learning style. With small class sizes, the institute personalizes learning plans to cater to individual educational needs. Sylvia holds a Master's in Education from Dowling College in New York, specializing in neuroscience and teaching. Being a triple threat herself (dyslexic, ADHD, and defiant), she utilized her understanding of the brain to unlock her own potential, instigating a desire to assist others in achieving the same.   Connect with Sylvia: iREN's Website Email: irencontact@irencr.com  iREN Fundraiser   Links and Related Resources: Episode 28: Why We Need to Celebrate and Continue to Build Our Kids' Resilience Episode 112: Rethinking/Redefining Homeschooling with Mel Nichols   Connect with Us: Get on our Email List Book a Consultation Get Support and Connect with a ChildNEXUS Provider Register for Our Self-Paced Mini Courses for Parents Who Want to Better Understand Their Child's Dyslexia, ADHD or Anxiety.    The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Emergency Lighting Controls primary purpose is to provide sufficient illumination during emergencies for building evacuation and maneuvering. So just transfer the circuitry from utility power to emergency power. But wait, it's not that simple. As Steve reveals in this episode, there are many considerations, like what kind of emergency is it? Power failure? Fire? Security? Steve points out the irony of the “bug-eye” security light at an emergency exit that blinds anyone who is approaching that exit. As more designers/engineers use general luminaires with controls for their emergency lighting, it further expands how these systems are wired and interact with each other. It might be complicated, but it's not rocket science. Get educated and have that detailed conversation at the beginning of the project to avoid last-minute changes. I'm taking a journey down the rabbit hole of screenwriting psychoanalysis with Professor William Indick, who is a psychology professor at William Paterson University in New Jersey, professor of psychology executive chair of faculty at Dowling College, and author of Psychology for Screenwriters. We take a nerdy dig into the world of psychology and how it affects writers, screenwriters, and characters. With some expert contextualization, William psychoanalyzes some of our favorite films and characters while also breaking down character archetypes and themes he has studied. How did it all start, you ask? Well, in 2003 he made the decision to incorporate more culturally relevant theories of personality instead of antiquated theories in his psychology classes by sorting references from famous films. Based on his students growing interested and fascination, William researched to find psychology textbooks about films, but none existed. So he wrote one instead. The book was published by Michael Wiese productions in 2004. Psychology For Screenwriters supports that screenwriters must understand human behavior to make their stories come alive. This book clearly describes theories of personality and psychoanalysis with simple guidelines, thought-provoking exercises, vivid film images, and hundreds of examples from classic movies.Basically, the book takes general psychology theories and applications and adapts them into helpful tools for screenwriters. He delves into various genre archetypal characters and themes that are repetitive in screenplays in the second edition of the book which will be out soon. Just this summer, William published his sixth book, Media Environments and Mental Disorder: The Psychology of Information Immersion. It deals a lot with narcissism, and the notion that all media is a mirror, and how we understand ourselves at a time when we're constantly being reflected in a million ways. The information environments that modern society requires us to master and engage in are based on literacy and digital communication. Mediated information not only passes through our brains, it alters and rewires them. Since our environment, to a large extent, is shaped by the way we perceive, understand, and communicate information, we can even think of mental disorders as symptoms of maladaptation to our media environments. This book uses this "media ecology" model to explore the effects of media on mental disorders. It traces the development of media from the most basic forms--the sights and sounds expressed by the human body--to the most technologically complex media created to date, showing how each medium of communication relates to specific mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and autism. As the digital age proceeds to envelop us in an environment of infinite and instantly accessible information, it's crucial to our own mental health to understand how the various forms of media influence and shape our minds and behaviors. My conversation with William was one of those discussions that you come out of, more informed than you went in.We had a blast.Enjoy my very informative conversation with William Indick. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

Paul Frank Martino was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1971, the eldest of two boys born to Italian immigrant parents, one of which came to the United States of America from the Molise Region of Italy, and the other came to the United States of America from the Naples (Campania) Region of Italy.  Paul was raised as a practicing Roman Catholic in the town of Ronkonkoma, on Long Island, in the state of New York, and graduated from Connetquot High School, in Bohemia, New York in 1989.  He graduated from Dowling College, in Oakdale, New York with a B.A. in Natural Sciences and Mathematics in 1993.  He earned his Master's in Exercise Physiology from the Human Performance Laboratory at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana in 1996, and later earned his Ph.D. in Physiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2006.  After earning, his Ph.D., Paul moved on to a two year American Heart Association, post-doctoral fellowship at Wright State University at the Boonshoft School of Medicine in the Department of Neuroscience, Cell Biology, and Physiology, studying the neuro-physiological effects of carbon dioxide regulation in the brain. After his fellowship, he moved on to a short stay in the biomedical/pharmaceutical industry as a study director designing research studies for evaluating and understanding potential new drugs. During his stay in industry, he also simultaneously managed and mentored a small group of laboratory research technicians.  He learned a great deal about managing and mentoring people in his short stint in industry.  He also learned that the business side of research is very different from research in the academic world. Since 2009, he has been a full-time tenure-track faculty member in the Biology Department at Carthage College, a small Lutheran affiliated liberal arts college in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  He was awarded the prestigious “Teacher of the Year Award in 2017,” for his outstanding teaching of Anatomy and Physiology to upper-classmen from across the Carthage campus. He currently leads the Carthage Biology Department as an Associate Professor and Chair.  In addition, he also holds several other academic positions, which include Associate Adjunct Professor of Physiology at Medical College of Wisconsin, as well as a faculty member of the Stress and Motivated Institute (SMBI).  He loves teaching and mentoring college students (Nate was one of my students.) to help them find their way in life, and has mentored 80 plus undergraduates in his active and collaborative research lab at Carthage.  He has co-authored 21 peer-reviewed scientific articles on strength training, glucose metabolism, respiratory neurophysiology, sleep, antioxidants, and behavioral inhibition. His current research, which is in part a collaboration with Justin Miller and several other Carthage colleagues' focuses on the physiology of college age students who have the behavioral temperament, called behavioral inhibition.  This book signals a new stage of his professional life and one where he hopes to help even more people navigate the struggles of life and to succeed. opphysiology@gmail.com    Doktesinc@gmail.com   https://www.facebook.com/LettersToOurYoungerSelves   https://www.amazon.com/s?k=letters+to+our+younger+selves&crid=16EJYQS95FCKS&sprefix=letters+to+our+younger+%2Caps%2C187&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_23  https://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/letters%20to%20our%20younger%20selves

How did it all start, you ask?Well, in 2003 he made the decision to incorporate more culturally relevant theories of personality instead of antiquated theories in his psychology classes by sorting references from famous films. He delves into various genre archetypal characters and themes that are repetitive in screenplays in the second edition of the book which will be out soon.Just this summer, William published his sixth book, Media Environments and Mental Disorder: The Psychology of Information Immersion. My conversation with William was one of those discussions that you come out of, more informed than you went in.We had a blast. Enjoy my very informative conversation with William Indick.

When Tamara Lewis was growing up in Jamaica, there were only two versions of what future "career success" might look like. She could become a doctor, or she could become a lawyer. She started college as a pre-med student ....and proceeded to change her major 14 times. She later was accepted into law school ....and ended up dropping out early in her first semester. The moral of this story? She was driven by what she "should" be doing versus following her passions, and she didn't find career fulfillment until she did just that. Tamara ultimately learned that she was drawn to non-profit work and organizations, and she currently serves as the Vice President of Talent & Culture at The Conrad Hilton Foundation. Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—YOU can be TOUGHER!” podcast this week features Michael Dowling, President & CEO of Northwell Health (the largest healthcare provider and private employer in New York State), chair of the Healthcare Institute, and current member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences. Born and raised in Knockaderry, County Limerick, in Ireland’s southwestern region, Michael’s family lived on a small piece of property in an impoverished area. His home had mud walls, a thatch roof, three small rooms, and a mud floor. There was no electricity, no running water, no bathrooms, and no heat, only a big open fireplace where his mother did all the cooking. Michael was the oldest of five children and had to help support his family from an early age, but this only inspired him to push further in pursuit of his dreams. “No” was never an option for Michael as he realized early on, that with dogged resolve, one stands a good chance of achieving their goals and dreams. Ireland in the 50’s and 60’s was a two-class system, and nobody ever thought that people without money would ever go to college. Even though Michael’s mother was deaf, she was an avid reader and passed that “love of reading” onto Michael. As a child, Michael remembers reading everything he could get his hands. In the end Michael did well enough in high school to make the cut and get accepted into college. “Never let your circumstances interfere with your potential,” his mother would say, always encouraging her children. Michael became the first person in his family to attend college, graduating UCC (University College, Cork) while working odd jobs to pay his tuition. He went on to receive his masters from Fordham University, while also holding honorary doctorates from Queen's University Belfast, University College Dublin, Hofstra University, Dowling College and Fordham University. He began his career at Fordham University as a professor and the assistant dean at the Graduate School of Social Services. He went on to serve under Governor Mario Cuomo for seven years, as state director of Health, Education and Human Services, as well as Deputy Secretary. He also served as commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services. Before joining Northwell Health in 1995, Michael was a senior vice president at Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield. At Northwell Health he was the health system’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, before becoming president and CEO in 2002. Northwell Health is the largest healthcare provider in New York State, caring for more than two million people annually through a vast network of more than 830 outpatient facilities, including 220 primary care practices, 52 urgent care centers, home care, rehabilitation and end-of-life programs, and 23 hospitals. As president and CEO of Northwell Health, Michael leads a clinical, academic and research enterprise with a workforce of more than 75,000 and annual revenue of $14 billion. “Innovation needs to be a core competency for any organization and part of its ongoing DNA.” says Michael. “It’s about people not being slaves to tradition, challenging the status quo and pursuing new, creative ways of doing our jobs and delivering care.” As one of health care’s most influential voices, Michael tackles societal issues such as gun violence and immigration that many health system CEOs shy away from. He has also authored several books; his latest—Leading Through a Pandemic: The Inside Story of Humanity, Innovation, and Lessons Learned During the COVID-19 Crisis—highlights the passion and energy that drives Northwell to be on the leading edge of medical policy and innovation, documenting dramatic stories of what it was like on the front lines, battling the COVID 19 pandemic of early 2020. Today, Michael and his wife Kathy live on Long Island with their two children, Brian and Elizabeth. Join Dustin and Michael for a stimulating conversation and hear how Michael overcame adversity and achieved his dreams. As Michael says, “If you tell me I can’t do something, that’s when I become determined to get it done.”

Our guest today is part of a husband and wife duo who are relatively new to the industry but have already reached great success since starting. Joining us is Amy Karol, of Coldwell Banker in St Petersburg, Florida. Amy and her husband Adam, are a full-time husband and wife real estate agent team who go by the A-team.   In this episode, join Amy and I as we discuss just how she and her husband landed in real estate, some advice for running a great business, and pet food donations in memory of a furry friend. Listen in to hear how Amy and Adam Karol, two Long Islanders, managed to make it down to Florida!   Top Takeaways:    Amy Karol's Advice for New Agents: Amy offers a few great pieces of advice to new agents. The most important part of the information she provides is to find mentors who have different strengths that can help you along your real estate journey. It is essential to find people who are willing to help you out and watch you grow. Amy also shares that in the beginning, it's easy to get caught in the growth aspect of learning, attending webinars, and taking classes. Education helps you grow and should always be something to strive for, but you also have to be doing things that will help you to uncover new leads and ultimately generating business.   “You know when you get your license, they don't teach you in that first-class how to start a business or how to actually do anything that you need to do.” – Amy Karol [21:12]   “You're not taught how to start your business. You're not taught how to do real estate. You feel like you have to learn everything. In one respect, that's what's so easy about us being the A-team. In this episode, Amy Karol shares how she got started in real estate with her husband, Adam. Amy recounts her story on how she landed in Tampa, Florida, doing real estate and her work running Bindi's Buddies pet food donations in memory of her late furry friend.   Originally from Long Island, New York, Amy Karol reminisces about some of the things she misses from where she grew up. Amy shares that no matter what age she is, she has always wanted to be a writer, never thinking it would be her profession but something she wanted to do someday. National Poetry Month is almost over but we have time for one more power ballad. This time, we're looking over the body of work of Paul Bailey. Bailey was a newspaperman from Amityville (founder of the Amityville Sun) as well as the publisher of the Long Island Forum. His dedication to Long Island history ran deep as he was also president of the Suffolk County Historical Society and Suffolk County Historian. He wrote a syndicated column on Long Island history and was a sought-after public speaker on the topic. So it's no surprise that his posthumous book of poetry, Treading Clams (1965) is filled with light verse on all aspects of Long Island. Today we read through excerpts of three of the poems, “The Midnight Rides of Austin Roe,” “Shoes from the Sea,” and “When Prohibition Came.” Born in 1885, Bailey actually spent some time out west before settling down to his newspaper career. He worked on cattle ranches and possibly in the movies – enough experience, at least, to fuel a number of Western stories that he wrote for pulps like Argosy later on. He also struck up a friendship at home with nearby neighbors Will Rogers and Fred Stone. Stone was an actor and comedian and the first person to play the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz (in the 1902 Broadway version). Our reader today is Dr. Josh Gidding, Professor of English at Dowling College. Thanks, Josh! And we hope you've enjoyed our spelunking through poetry history. Make sure you check out our other Long Island Power Ballads and leave a comment on what you thought. Karl Grossman has been an investigative reporter on Long Island since the early 1960s. Barely in his twenties, he cut his journalistic teeth at the Babylon Town Leader taking on one of the most powerful men in New York State: Robert Moses. Karl covered the developing story of Moses' plan to build a highway down the middle of Fire Island. Although the plan horrified local residents, many on the Island and in the press supported it. Through the work of Karl and papers like the Suffolk County News and the Long Island Business News and most importantly people like Murray Barbash, Irving Like and Robert Cuhsman Murphy, the plan was washed away. In its place we have the Fire Island National Seashore. Today is part 1 of our interview with Karl on his early career, the power of the press, and how he was almost an alum of Dowling College (then known as Adelphi Suffolk College). You'll hear about his further battles in part 2 but first in two weeks we'll revisit the Moses fight from the perspective of the Barbash family. Stay tuned!   Further Research Karl Grossman Works by Karl Grossman Related Books Fire Island National Seashore Digital Public Library of America resources Related podcasts: Mike Jahn, The New York Times and Rock & Roll Leroy Douglas and the Class of '64

The 5 factors that are crucial for emotionally intelligent leadership What makes a great leader? We all know, or have heard stories of, highly skilled people in business who have been promoted to a leadership position only to fail.  We also know of others that while seemingly average get promoted to a leadership position and have excelled!  What is the difference? "There was a study done at Stanford, their business council, on what's the number one skill that people need to be successful in life.  This council said that it was self-awareness" - Fran LaMattina In this episode Fran shares what emotional intelligence (EI) is, how it is a learned skill, and its application to leadership.  Daniel Goleman in his article  on 'What Makes A Leader' in the Harvard Business Review states that the higher the rank of a person considered to be a star performer, the more emotional intelligence capabilities showed up as the reason for his or her effectiveness. These are the components of EI that Fran will walk you through: Self-Awareness Self-Regulation Motivation Empathy Social Skill Resources Fran's email fran@strategiesforgreatness.com Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ  Daniel Goleman Professional Christian Coaching Institute Bio Fran LaMattina, MIR, MCC is President and Founder of Strategies for Greatness, a consultative coaching practice. Brave New Mind: Living in a Future Science World with Elliot Maynard Elliott Maynard believes his new master paradigm [Future Science Technology] is the quantum-field science for the future. He is convinced that integrating traditional, linear science with non-linear consciousness technology will yield new breakthrough solutions for the global problems we face as citizens of Planet Earth. Future Science Technology is a unique system which supports the development of a new and superior human mind - a master paradigm containing 25 keys to personal and planetary enlightenment. To this end, Dr. Maynard has invented an entirely new paradigm format, which - unlike linear paradigms of the past - is flexible, evolvable and timeless. He calls his living paradigms “enlightened pathways into the future.” Although he admits that opening Pandora's Box entails accepting responsibility for dealing with the gifts inside, and that any pioneering effort will have its share of detractors and unintended consequences, he quips, “Even the turtle will not get ahead unless he sticks his neck out.” Elliott Maynard is a leading-edge consciousness scientist and conceptual designer. His background spans the fields of Zoology, Coral Reef Ecology, Oceanography and Tropical Rainforest Biology.
