The Empire Club Present Olivia Chow with Hon. John Baird. Cities like Toronto play an essential role in people's lives and Canada's future prosperity and progress. However, cities today face enormous challenges and budgetary pressures that put everything at risk. Increasing national challenges such as the housing crisis, homelessness, refugees displaced by war, climate change, and mental health have Toronto stepping up to face them despite being constrained by frameworks from other orders of government that cannot meet today's modern challenges. Change is necessary.
Guests: Edward Keenan and Emma Teitel, columnists Mayor Olivia Chow spoke with John Baird, the former federal minister of foreign affairs, and they agreed Toronto needs a new deal. So far the federal government hasn't played along, but maybe a scandal plagued Premier Doug Ford could be convinced to play along? Keenan and Teitel also discuss the Conservative party's indulgence of anti-woke pandering, the late arrival of cellular service on the TTC, the late departure of the prime minister from a foreign meeting and other assorted news that caught their attention through the week. This episode was produced by Edward Keenan, Emma Teitel, Sean Pattendon and Brian Bradley. Audio Sources: CHCH News, CTV News, Empire Club of Canada

VFL Rewind Episode 5 John Cooper - Tom Lynch - John Baird
Not even a year into her presidency role at UMBC, President Valerie Sheares Ashby feels right at home. The privilege of serving so many students, staff, and faculty is not lost on President Sheares Ashby. Always having had a central value around leadership, she has said if you turn a triangle upside down, the leader should be the point at the bottom. Everyone above you, you should be in service to. This is just one quality that President Sheares Ashby has learned from the many good examples in her life, including her parents. Her father was a minister as well as a math and science teacher. Her mother, who was an English teacher, went on to run a homeless shelter after retiring. Through their compassion and dedication, President Sheares Ashby learned that service should feel like a privilege. While President Sheares Ashby shares that every job she has held has been her favorite job at the time, she says the UMBC presidency was the right role at the right institution with the right values at the right time. If you are comfortable in your own skin, and you show up authentically, it's easy to find the job you're supposed to be in, she explains. When you find that perfect fit, President Sheares Ashby says you should spend everyday working to make it better than you found it. That way, when it's your time to leave, you can do so well. President Sheares Ashby appreciates how former UMBC President Freeman handed over the reins. He introduced her to the people, the city, and helped her make connections, and then handed it off for President Ashby to lead. To stay grounded as a leader, President Sheares Ashby relies on her people: a leadership coach and 4 mentors. Beyond that, she prioritizes self-care because she knows everyone she meets deserves the best version of herself. She utilizes exercise, church, time with friends, music, and more to take care of herself. Sometimes, she admits, self-care means saying no to requests. On her desk you'll find ‘20 Ways to Say No'. While your job should bring you joy, it should not be everything to you, she notes, asserting that it's important for leaders to have a whole life. At the end of the day, leadership isn't for everyone. President Sheares Ashby reminds us that you need a servant's heart and the right assets for the role. When it comes to keeping her leadership strong, she turns to her mentors and a few good books. For anyone who is looking at how to be an authentic leader, President Sheares Ashby recommends the books- The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni and Leading With Heart by John Baird. What You'll Learn: Why self-care is so important for leaders. What inclusive excellence means and why it's important. Why everyone should have a mentor. Favorite Quote: “It is a privilege to be in leadership, and we are indeed in service to people.” -President Valerie Sheares Ashby --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/innovationalliance/message
KNX reporter John Baird joined WCBS with the latest updates from law enforcement about possible leads in this tragic shooting.
City Council member and California political heavyweight Kevin De Leon made his first appearance at a city council meeting since the fallout from the leaked audio tape of him participating in a racist conversation that led to the resignations of Council President Nury Martinez and County Labor President Ron Harrera. De Leon has two years left on his term and has said he has no plans to resign and the meeting quickly became pandemonium after he appeared between public attendees shouting for him to step down, and supporters chanting his name. To discuss further, KCBS Radio's Pat Thurston and Bret Burkhart spoke with John Baird, reporter with Audacy Sister station KNX in Los Angeles. He was at the city council meeting earlier today...

Highlights:The Journey Behind Leading with HeartWhat makes the difference between great leaders and mediocre leaders? In their research Edward Sullivan and coauthor, John Baird found that the nuts and bolts behind effective leaders are authentic connections. Edward Sullivan says, “We found that leaders who are very successful lead with heart and leading with heart isn't simply being a good guy or it's not simply caring with a capital C. We found that there are actual specific conversations that people have to create the connective tissue in the workplace that lead to better results.” [9:45] Organic ConversationThe way Leading with Heart was written, is to be used as a tool. These conversations and questions are organic, it's more about the conversations than one-liner questions. The book includes conversation starters to create ongoing conversations and dig into the richness behind them. “At the end of the day, leading with heart is about engagement. It's about conversation. It's not about interrogation.”, Edward explains the way the book can be used by teams. [15:23]Heart Centered QuestionsWhat do you need to be at your best? People like their work when they are treated like individuals and feel seen and as a member of the team. Leaders who promote this check in with their team, assessing and providing what each member might need to do their best work. “You can tell when people like their work… and it's not because of those superficial benefits.” [19:53]Edward shares the powerful question leaders can ask to support their team. What fears are holding you back? A fear-run organization is going to cause more turnover, less transparency, more politics, and all of the other negativity that is commonly seen in the workplace. Edwards provides a powerful analogy from the book, “If your team is afraid to tell you when they smell smoke, you're always going to be putting out fires.”[22:08]What desires drive you, and which might derail you? This is the “gas pedal” conversation… It's the leader's responsibility to ask the questions and start the conversations to figure out what is going to motivate their team and get them going but also be conscious of what might get them off track. Leaders naturally desire acceptance and belonging but can also face the struggle of connection versus having difficult conversations. Edward reiterates by saying, “We can't let the maintaining the relationship get in the way of maintaining effective performance of the team.” [31:32]What are your greatest gifts? This is the question that gets leaders and team members lighting up. Our gift is something that often goes unappreciated, something that comes so naturally but we don't value it the way other people might. “As soon as you gain awareness of your gift you start seeing applications for it in many other places in your life, and many other places in the business” [35:24] Edward explains how great leaders can see gifts and use them to add value to not only the business but by allowing their team member to see the gift for themselves as well. What is your purpose? In Leading with Heart, all the previous four questions lead to the why. Get all the other information and feelings out there so that you can determine a real why and a real purpose. To Edward, purpose means how do you wanna leave the world? Who do you want to serve? What impact do you want to have? Edward defines this as, “Ultimately purpose comes down to figuring out how to use your gifts to their highest and best use. In service of something bigger than yourself.” [44:26] Mentioned in this episode:Leading with Heart Velocity Coaching

Welcome to an episode with the CEO and managing partner at Velocity Group, Edward Sullivan. Get Edward's book here: https://amzn.to/3HT2Hy4 In this episode, Edward discussed the best practices that leaders and companies do to address mental health issues and the real cause of the great resignation. He spoke about the gravity of work-life balance, care, and understanding as part of an employee retention strategy. For decades, we have avoided discussing the topic of mental health around the workplace. It was considered a weakness and could greatly derail one's career. We operated under the assumption of manifesting the “executive presence,” which covertly added up to pressure and stress on the employees. As companies have responded to the challenges brought by Covid in recent years, they are learning to consider mental health as a common issue in the workplace and taking employees' well-being in a serious manner. The great resignation caused a stir in how companies view and treat their employees. As Edward mentioned in this episode, “employees are not leaving in the great resignation because of company benefits, they are fleeing from toxic work cultures.” Edward Sullivan holds an MBA from the Wharton School and an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School. His 25-year career as an executive coach and political consultant has taken him around the globe coaching and advising start-up founders, Fortune 500 executives, and heads of state of foreign nations. A global conference dedicated to resisting the Iranian regime had to be cancelled at the last minute because of a terrorist threat. True North's Andrew Lawton was in Albania set to cover the conference, hosted by the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran/National Council of Resistance of Iran. He was still able to sit down with some of the dignitaries slated to attend and meet some of the members of the Iranian opposition group. In this recap edition of The Andrew Lawton Show, Andrew shares some of his reflections on Iran's place in the world, and speaks with former US ambassador to the UN Human Rights Commission Ken Blackwell, retired US general Chuck Wald, and former Canadian foreign affairs minister John Baird.Support the show: https://tnc.news/lawton-heritage-club/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Strategy Skills episode 255, an episode with the CEO and managing partner at Velocity Group, Edward Sullivan. His work has been featured in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Forbes, Fast Company, USA Today, and Nasdaq, among others. In the fourth episode of Little Science Talks Season 1, Heidi Gardner and her co-host Anna Kebke are joined by John Baird, a Lecturer in entomology and infectious disease at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and he joins us to talk about his meandering path to a STEM career. John grew up in Northern Ireland during the troubles, and it's fair to say that education was not at the top of his agenda - he was ultimately asked to leave school after an incident with a tractor. He went into the air force and ended up getting into trouble there too, ending his time in military prison after a drunken quest to sell a tank to Colonel Gaddafi... Eventually, at the age of 27, he decided it was time to get back on the straight and narrow and head to university, doing an access course before graduating with a BSc and PhD. He moved to the University of Aberdeen and was taken under the wing of Professor Mary Cotter, a much loved and admired member of the teaching staff. John is now a much loved member of Aberdeen's teaching staff himself, being nominated by students for University of Aberdeen Science Lecturer of the Year 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. John's keen on encouraging his students to be creative, and we discuss the course he set up (Anna was a student, and Heidi's lectured on the course previously) with the aim of cultivating imagination, creativity and curiosity within his students - a hugely popular course that's given students a new perspective on the way that they can use their scientific skills. In part two of this edition of UpTech Report, John takes us through the initial inspiration behind Vouched, and he shares his thoughts on the importance of holding off on outside funding and why it's key to let yourself fail.
Whether you're taking out a loan, receiving healthcare, or even purchasing wine, verifying identities is necessary to prevent fraud and protect consumers. But as more and more of these transactions occur digitally, it's become a greater challenge to verify identities with accuracy and security. The opportunities for identities to be stolen and for personal data to be compromised is high. John Baird set out to solve this problem with Vouched—a company that uses artificial intelligence to verify the identities of customers and contractors with speed, accuracy, and security. In part one of this edition of UpTech Report, John discusses this technology and the many problems it solves to determine that you are indeed you.

Episode 4: The Blue Adios aka the “Scheering”A Tale of Two Leadership Races, Part 1, “The Lynnterview”It was the best of times it was the worst of times and whether you’re looking at the Federal Conservative or Provincial Liberal race this statement could go either way.....or depending on your opinion of us it could apply to our return to the podcast after an extended holiday hiatus....In the first episode of our leadership race series we’re back in the Alibi Room, where the drink is blue, and so is the former leader of the Conservative Part of Canada, Andrew Scheer. Before getting into the race itself, our team plays a little game of political headline battleship and discusses some of the top stories that have stacked the headlines over the past few weeks, with the winner having the honour of welcoming our favourite Conservative, Lynn Harper-Kutchske, back to the podcast. But before we get to that and although following the rules goes against everything Jeff believes in, he does love showing off how smart he thinks he is, so he and the team dig a little deeper into what is actually takes to get into the race and how the new rules affect the voices of the activists within the party and the ability of candidates to actually enter the race. During the “Lynnterview” the team asks Lynn to shed a little blue light on how she thinks Trudeau’s Liberal minority is playing out thus far. As the campaign manager for Pierre St. Amant, Lynn shares her insights on how the campaign went from a local perspective and her opinions on John Baird’s post-election report, and where (if anywhere) does the blame lie for letting this one slip through the cracks. The team also talks to Lynn about the current state of the Conservative Party of Canada’s leadership race, and what and who the party and the riding need to take them into the next election. As always, we end with the team’s favourite segment, “Letters from a Podcast”.So sit back and enjoy because in the words of our social media guru Josh, “get in loser, we’re going podcasting!”
Authentication used to be an easy process. It all started with the king. The king would require a wax seal around any form of parchment or communication that was produced, verifying that it was actually coming from the person that it was supposed to be coming from. If it wasn’t sealed with the king’s seal, it wasn't legitimate communication. It’s become a little more complicated since then. On the most recent episode of AI:IRL, we sat down with John Baird, Founder at CEO at Vouched for a talk about: The challenges we face with authentication. How to eliminate the friction present in identify verification. What AI can do to make those challenges less of a burden.

There is good news in terms of the charity bets from last week. Craig and Greig manage to win both bets for the podcast team. John wonders whether they may have fled with their winnings. The lower league is reviewed with discussion on whether Hibs can overtake Rangers. St Mirren's continued slide is discussed too. The title race in League One is discussed as Ayr and Dunfermline compete for top spot. As per every week, it is mentioned that League Two continues to be very competitive from top to bottom. The semi final draw for the League Cup is discussed. Andy wonders what the location will be for Hibs v St Johnstone. There are no predictions to be made as there is no Premier League card. John and Andy opt for John Baird of Falkirk for the Mcbookie FGS bet. They opt for a double after success of last week. The top two in League One are chosen. On July 16, 2015 in Dawson Creek, BC, James McIntyre was shot dead by RCMP. The fifth shooting since April 1 in the region. We await the investigation report, which may take a year. There was a BC Hydro-Site C dam presentation that afternoon. Protestors were expected. Police responded as they do too frequently. This event brought forth Op Anon Down. For all the money being spent by Canada's spy and surveillance agencies to watch our "enemies" and to "protect" us, there seems to be some holes much closer to home for the powers that be. Mohammed Fahmy. Peter Munk. Barrick Gold. Nathan Jacobsen. Israel. ISIL. Secret Orders-In-Council of the Privy Council Office. The Prime Minister's Office. Expensive and partisan photo ops. Who is the common factor here? Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, current board member of Barrick Gold and the Friends of Isreal Initiative, John Baird. His surprise resignation from Cabinet, then politics altogether was an unexpected occurance. Op Anon Down can fill in some blanks for you, as they have proven to date. Let's discuss how far and deep the corruption goes in Harper's world. Expect Us.
The media treated Maher Arar like shit. So why hasn't anyone apologized? Ottawa crank and iPolitics writer Andrew Mitrovica discusses this, plus John Baird's empty promises of Mohamed Fahmy's imminent release, and The Globe and Mail's groundbreaking upside down Mercedes Benz advertorials.Support CANADALAND: https://canadaland.com/joinSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Before he quit his job, Foreign Minister John Baird said Journalist Mohamed Fahmy's release was "imminent". Now Fahmy is set to be retried in Egypt after over a year in prison. John Baird engineered the release of Dr.Tarek Loubani after 50 days detained in the same jail. Bethany Horne asks Loubani about it, and asks the Fahmy family what comes next. Why is the media so incurious about John Baird's sudden resignation? Why is Baird being so vigorously lionized? Torontoist staff writer Desmond Cole talks with Jesse about this, and about what we're not allowed to discuss as we submit to new anti-terror laws.
