Eight years and drought has taught Kryst Krein a lot with cover crop experimentation in American Falls, in addition to his high-moisture corn, potatoes and wheat rotations. To be a farmer you have to be a soil manager, Krein says. And soil organic percentage has drastically changed on his farm. Different tillage trials (strip-till, no-till or deep rip) have also brought a great deal of education and experience. Take advantage of his experiences before you try your own.

“Environmental, social, and governance,” better known as ESG, has been a major topic of discussion in the business world. Proponents of ESG praise companies for efforts to reduce carbon emissions and make their workplaces more inclusive. Critics have charged that ESG is merely “woke capital,” a way that corporations leverage their power and wealth to advance leftwing policy priorities at the expense of fossil fuels and traditional values. Julius Krein, editor of American Affairs, says it's a lot more complicated than a simple “left versus right” divide. He argues that Republicans need a better alternative to ESG than “shareholder primacy,” the free-market fundamentalism at odds with rising American populism. Can Republicans find an effective alternative to ESG?Read Krein's piece in COMPACT, “Why the Right Can't Beat ESG”Watch Senator Tom Cotton's exchange with Kroger's CEO

You've likely heard of accelerators or incubators – organizations that help entrepreneurs in the early stages of developing their products or services. Once a company begins to raise larger amounts of capital or reach a minimum revenue threshold, the company “graduates” from the accelerator or incubator program. In other words, the company gets resources and assistance for a limited time frame. There is a unique model that sticks with the entrepreneur well beyond the early stages of formation and growth. It is this latter model that Startup Health embraces. Startup Health serves the entrepreneur at every stage of growth, providing entrepreneurs with guidance resources, networking and more to support them over the long-term. If this model isn't impressive enough, Startup Health has also launched Moonshots which are initiatives designed to tackle the biggest, hairiest problems in healthcare. If you are a healthcare leader, you'll want to say tuned to learn more about these Moonshots. With us is Steve Krein, Cofounder and CEO of Startup Health. Steve will tell us about the Startup Health model, how it is different and why the model is so powerful in aiding the entrepreneur. He'll also tell us more about Moonshots and how they are transforming the face of healthcare. Julius Kreins' address at the second National Conservatism Conference, 11/01/21.
In Episode 220 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Julius Krein, the editor of American Affairs, a quarterly journal of policy and political-economy that delves into the deeper sociopolitical, cultural, and economic issues facing America and other Western countries. The episode is broken into two parts, the first hour of which focuses on issues of political-economy, policy, and market dynamics that have driven the American economy into a state of “proletarianization,” where its citizens are increasingly ruled by an oligarchy of global elites whose insatiable appetite for wealth and power is endangering the very systems of free-market capitalism and liberal democracy that this kakistocracy claims to uphold. It's an outcome that Julius Klein would refer to as “capitalism without competence and feudalism without nobility.” The second hour of today's conversation is, unsurprisingly, the most satisfying insofar as Demetri and Julius tackle the socio-political and cultural dimensions and manifestations of the problems created by the perversions of what was earlier described as the “proletarianization” or conversion of the American economy and political system into a more corrupt, upwardly sclerotic, and extractive system of governance than anything experienced in America since at least the Gilded Age. Valentine’s Day is usually a day for lovers, one where they can dote on each other and express their love in the form of special time and presents. But in today’s episode we learn that for some, the happiness of Valentine’s Day can be replaced with heartache, fear, and even death. Gerald Dean Krein Jr. was a depressed man who desired to take others down with him when he was ready to complete suicide. He planned an extravagant sex and suicide party for Valentine's Day 2005. Miles away and years prior Delmar Anholt Jr., a troubled man about to become a father, would commit one of the most atrocious killings in Oregon’s history on Valentine’s Day 1982. In this MCC Podcast our guest was Julius Krein, founder and editor of the journal American Affairs. Julius had been an enthusiastic supporter of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign but only a few months later he shared his doubts in a New York Times op-ed about the new administration and that why he regretted his choice. We asked him if he has changed his mind even a little since his article and what he sees as main reasons of Trump's defeat. We discussed populism and why they actually function best with technocrats and also what can Central Europe expect from a future Biden administration. Julius also spoke in a panel on Patriotism at the MCC-Danube Institute online conference-series 'Patriotic Talks' (https://youtu.be/fa7ZEM6JTog). In 2016, Julius Krein was one of Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters. In Trump’s critiques of the existing Republican and Democratic establishments, Krein saw the contours of a heterodox ideology he believed could reshape American politics for the better. So he established a pro-Trump blog and, later, a policy journal called American Affairs, which his critics claimed was an attempt to “understand Trump better than he understands himself.” Today Krein finds himself in an unusual position. Upon realizing Trump was not committed to any governing vision at all (but was as racist as his critics suggested), Krein disavowed the president in 2017. But as the editor of American Affairs, he’s still committed to building an intellectual superstructure around the ideas that were threaded through Trump’s 2016 campaign. This conversation is about the distance between Trump and the ideology so many tried to brand as Trumpism. We also discuss Krein’s view that the US has always functionally been a one-party system, the disconnect between Republican elites and voters, what a new bipartisan economic consensus could look like, whether Joe Biden and the Democrats take Trump’s ideas more seriously than Trump does, which direction the GOP will go if Trump loses in a landslide in November, why Republicans lost interest in governance, whether media coverage is the true aim of right-wing populists, why Krein thinks the true power lies with the technocrats, and more. On political decline and realignment. The editor of American Affairs joins us to discuss the decay of conservatism and we ask whether this decay doesn't apply to other parts of the political spectrum too. Is today's 'class struggle' really just between the upper-middle class and the elite? And we discuss the 'late-Soviet' USA - the sense of decline embodied in the gerontocracy of the ruling class. In the ninth episode, and finale of the podcast's first season, the format of the show is turned on its host; at the behest of a previous guest, Kevin finds someone willing to interview him about the music that has made an impact throughout his life. His charming wife Wendy willingly spoke with him, at length, about the idiotic amount of music he selected for the episode, as well as if the titular character from "ALF" needs to be 'Me Too'd', if you can swear on a podcast, and what it's like living with terribly fragile mental health. For more information about the AWARD WINNING music blog Anhedonic Headphones, click here! Episode 9 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In today's episode, we discussed: "I Wish it Would Rain Down," written and performed by Phil Collins, taken from the 1989 Atlantic Records release, ...But Seriously. "Stranger Than Fiction," written by Brett Gurewitz and performed by Bad Religion, taken from the 1994 Atlantic Records release, Stranger Than Fiction. "Let Down" written and performed by Radiohead, taken from the 1997 Parlophone/Capitol Records release, OK Computer. "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)," written and performed by Deftones, taken from the 1997 Maverick Records release, Around The Fur. "You Got Me," written by The Roots and Jill Scott, performed by The Roots, Eve, and Erykah Badu, taken from the 1999 MCA Records release, Things Fall Apart. "The Day Brings," written and performed by Brad, taken from the 1997 Epic Records release, Interiors. The legendary investor Esther Dyson is not a big fan of technology. She is a proponent of big ideas, demanding projects with a long-term positive influence on society. Founders of StartupHealth Unity Stoakes and Steven Krein are serial entrepreneurs, driving positive change with innovators working on technological and other innovations in healthcare and medicine. At its inception, the idea behind StartupHealth was simple and very, very, very optimistic: to improve health and well-being of every person in the world. If that seemed like a fantasy seven years ago, the organisation came a long way by now. StartupHealth connects 200 companies, so-called transformers, listed in 10 categories or as they call them - moonshots. In this episode, Esther Dyson explains why she invested in the company in its very early days. She shares her thoughts on how she sees problems society faces when it comes to health and wellbeing. Steven and Unity talk about the past, the future and the positive attitude one needs to keep trying even when things in business get tough.
The first in a series of deeper introductions, this episode focuses on knifemaker Tom Krein. We talk about life, family, knives and history with Tom, and in the end, we all come away knowing a bit more about Tom than we ever did before.

The election of President Donald Trump has challenged the political machine of conservativism. Now, many on the right are grappling with how to make sense of “Trumpism” and whether it fits into the conservative movement that’s been developing over the past few decades. A new policy and political journal, “American Affairs,” aims to intellectualize the Trumpism movement as it unfolds. The publication is led by Julius Krein, a 2008 Harvard University graduate, who joins professors Julian Zelizer and Sam Wang on this episode of Politics & Polls. Krein is an American political writer and the founding editor of American Affairs. He first went into a career in finance, working for several firms, including Bank of America and the Blackstone Group, before leaving finance to found and edit American Affairs.
