“The magic of telling your story the right way really magnetizes your ideal client to want to work with you, instead of you having to pitch them or sell them anything.”   This week on Experts Unleashed, Joel brings on Majeed Mogharreban to shed light on the path to a successful speaking career through great storytelling. Majeed founded the Expert Speaker Institute on the belief that stories can change the world. Majeed shares how he helps his clients reach their audience without using an aggressive sales pitch.   Many of Majeed’s clients find themselves dazzled by the idea of being the speaker who leaves the stage to find a crowd of eager, adoring people ready to engage and (in most cases) buy what they’re selling. He teaches people how to inspire this kind of efficient magnetism with compelling stories. Specifically, three stories should be told:   Your story - How you went from struggle to success Client success story - A life transformation that your skills helped bring about Cautionary tale - The story of someone who has the problem that you solve and who wasn’t able to solve it without you, and thus experienced failure, consequences, and a serious downfall.   These stories help clients see the value of working with you. People who attend presentations are going to make one of four choices, and you structure your stories based on these choices:   Do nothing (Cautionary tale - these people can leave because your story is not for them) DIY (Cautionary tale) Pay someone to solve the problem (Cautionary tale) Solve the problem with you (Your success story)   By the end of the speech number four the obvious option, but whether or not people buy from you, they still receive tremendous value just by listening and the event organizer is pleased. Everyone wins!   “Then you write that speech like it’s a love letter to that person, they feel like ‘Hang on a second, do you have a recording going on in my brain? Because this is literally what’s going on in my brain...I think we should talk.’”   Majeed emphasizes that your focus as a speaker should not be on the speaking fee, but on giving value to the audience. In fact, the sale starts before the presentation, when the people coming to hear you read your bio, see your website, and begin to understand what you’re all about.   “Our minds are designed to pay attention to stories. Our brains actually synchronize their brain waves to the storyteller and the listener. It’s a very, very powerful way to connect emotionally, connect visually”   Finally, Majeed goes into his background as a speech-team champ and an improv actor, and the irreplaceable part that those skills have played in his career as a speaker. He talks about his journey from young serial entrepreneur to corporate event speaker, all the way to his current business as a speaking coach. She is a model of blissful presence; contentment in the moment. Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has allowed me to use my emotions as information signals and data by being curious and present. [It takes me to the place of 'oh, I'm experiencing anger right now', instead of having the instinctive reaction of, "I'm angry, I'm going to go break some dishes", or "I'm going to go yell at somebody". Just that split second realization of, "Oh, I'm experiencing an emotion, this is information for me. What should I do with it?" [This] versus allowing my emotions to control my body. I think mindfulness gives me that power. Thoughts on Breathing I learned this thing about breathing. It's amazing. When we're being hunted by a predator, as cavemen, we drop our breathing really shallow so we can't be heard and so we can hear better. When we're totally cool and relaxed and the birds are chirping and the water's going by breathe deeply. So when we breathe deeply, we telling our body there's no predator there and I believe that's the fastest and easiest and cheapest way to get instantly mindful. Take a deep breath and you're already there. Suggested Resources Book: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle App: Calm Bullying Story I don't think that I was bullied when I was a kid. I had a pretty strong mindset; a pretty strong attitude. I think what is really more of a present feeling in my childhood and now, is the pressure to be normal; the pressure to be like everybody else. When you're an outlier; a high performer, you are by nature different than most people and you make other people uncomfortable. So what I was able to do successfully was find other highly driven people so that I was normal amongst my peers. But what I found I received some criticism for was ambition and drive and being teased for being so focused on accomplishment and not doing what I thought the cool kids were doing. They were skipping class, doing drugs, being bullies, and being jocks, and I was kind of envious of their coolness while I was studying and getting good grades. What I've always felt, that the pressure is to try to be normal, and what I found the solution is, to make my normal high performance. I do feel normal amongst my tribe.
