Byrd, Tom, Kevin and Lux pair up two independent horror films made in Japan by American filmmakers, with a mix of American and Japanese cast and crew.  First up we have the Manster, an early body horror film directed by Kenneth G Crane (the American version of Half Human) and starring Peter Dynely (Thunderbirds), Terri Zimmern Jerry Ito (Mothra), and Tetsu Nakamura (Mothra, Latitude Zero).  It is about an American journalist in Japan who becomes the subject of an evolution experiment that causes a monstrous creature to grow out of his shoulder and commit murders across Tokyo.  Then we have the Revenge of Dr. X (actually titled Venus Flytrap), a film written by Ed Wood (yes, that Ed Wood) and shot in Japan by bored military personnel stationed there (we get into that insane story).  It tells the story of a cantankerous NASA scientist who goes to Japan to "relax" and (for reasons left unclear) starts splicing plant DNA to create a violent plant-man.  There's unhinged gas station attendants, pearl divers, mute hunchbacks and more.  How do these compare to other b-movies of the times?  Why did some guys in the military decide to buy an Ed Wood script and shoot it in Japan?  Why is SO MUCH of the information out there about Dr. X false?  Which of these movies nearly drove us to madness? We have the answers, so relax and enjoy the conversation!

Let's face it: horror fans are, as a group, a little bit obsessive. When we sink our teeth into something we do not do it barely or easily, we take a big, honkin' bite.  If we become infatuated with a director, we want to see every film they've made, read a book about them, hear people talk about them, watch documentaries about them, and so on.  And the same is true for national horror cinemas, regional American horror cinemas, important eras, actors, subgenres, and the like.  And in recent years, a handful of visionary producers of physical media have recognized an opportunity in our longing and have invented and are currently inundating us with boxed sets.  These comprehensive, exhaustive, wonderful monsters have become a gravitational center point for our genre. But just a handful of years ago they mostly didn't exist, or were announced only every few years. Nowadays, we get several per year from companies like Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, Indicator, Arrow, and Scream! Factory, just to name a few.  So we figured it was time for Discover the Horror to take a long look at the history and impact of these monolithic pieces of film history.  Movies mentioned: 100 Years of Horror, Abby (1974), Alien (1979), Beast of Blood (1970), Beyond Dream's Door (1989), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Black Cat (1934), Blade in the Dark (1983), Blood of Ghastly Horror (1967), The Body Snatcher (1945), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Carnival Magic (1983), Carnival of Blood (1970), Cat People (1942), City of the Living Dead (1980), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), The Chooper (1971), Creature with the Atomic Brain (1955), Curse of the Cat People (1944), Dawn of the Mummy (1981), Day of the Animals (1977), Deathdream (1974), Demons (1985), Demons 2 (1986), Deranged (1974), The Devil-Doll (1936), Dracula (1931), Emanuelle in Bangkok (1976), The Eroticist (1972), Fiend with the Electronic Brain (1967), Final Exam (1990), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), The Fly (1958), Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake (1959), Frankenstein (1931), Freaks (1932), Friday the 13th (1980), The Ghost Ship (1943), The Giant Claw (1957), The Godfather (1972), Godzilla (1954), Grizzly (1976), Gruesome Twosome (1967), Hellraiser (1987), Help Me . . . This Far Middle installment is a deep dive into the convergence of energy in Appalachia, economics, geopolitics and quality of life. “These are big themes, coming together into an epic confluence,” says Nick. “We get these right, we’re all going to win. We get them wrong, we’re all going to suffer.” Nick explains these issues were the catalyst to his writing Precipice (available here). He goes on to discuss natural gas supply and demand; the impact of global/national/regional/local energy policies fueling energy scarcity; and, concludes with a unique look at the intersection of tax policy and this week in music history.

This week we have a one-off episode with the 1961 film The Snake Woman. This is Castle of Horror Episode 338.The Snake Woman (a.k.a. The Terror of the Snake Woman) is a low budget black-and-white 1961 British horror film produced by George Fowler and directed by Sidney J. Furie. It stars Susan Travers and John McCarthy.[1] The film was shown on a double bill in the UK with several movies, including re-releases of The Split (a.k.a. The Manster) (1959) and The Vikings (1958), and as the second feature on a double bill with Doctor Blood's Coffin (1961) in the US. The film is set in a small English village at the turn of the 20th century. It tells the story of Atheris (Susan Travers), a young woman who has the power to transform from human to cobra, and the Scotland Yard detective (John McCarthy) sent to investigate a series of deaths, unusual because all the victims died after being bitten by snakes that are not native to the UK.

What's that buzzing past your shoulder? A tiny fly? How annoying! Now imagine that you and that fly have somehow become inextricably joined, with you taking on the traits and even the physical aspects of the insect. This is the horror of The Fly, both the original 1958 film and the 1986 remake. On this episode we explore the concepts and stories of The Fly films, including the later sequels of the original film. We are joined once again by our good friend and honorary crew member, Lord Blood-Rah!The original film was based on a short story that appeared in (of all places) Playboy magazine. A scientist experimenting in teleportation accidentally merges himself physically with a fly in a failed experiment and gradually loses his humanity. The film largely follows the short story.  Vincent Price stars as the brother of the scientist, in a rare sympathetic role. David Hedison (billed as Al Hedison) plays the scientist, driven to perfect teleportation, but tragically doomed by his own ambition. Your Planet 8 crew discusses the the film in detail.Naturally we compare it to the 1986 Jeff Goldblum remake. Obviously the David Cronenberg-helmed 1986 film was much more grotesque, focusing on body horror, on the absolute degradation of the transformation. But it is also a love story, with Geena Davis playing the romantic interest. Certainly there's a lot going on in the film that speaks to fear of what can happen to us and our bodies that is timeless. There's also a lot of plain goofing around in this episode too, but hey, what did you expect? This episode's Sensor Sweep is from Chef Engineer Bob. Appropriately he shares the book, The Fly at 50, from Bear Manor Media (it's readily available at Amazon). Everything you want to know about the making of this sci-fi classic is in this book.Bob also reminds us that there's still time to get tickets for Godzilla's Monster Bash at the Balboa Theater in San Francisco, held May 14-16. Some surprises in what films are, and also what are NOT included. Is Lloyd's favorite connected to his teenage memories of scoring with a beach babe in the '70's? Can John swim without shitting that weird mesh lining in his trunks due to the number that his top pick has done to his head? Has Jon eaten pea soup in over 40 years? Answers to none of these questions on the show! Listen in and Happy Halloween!

Between the band's 16 albums and DVDs, Triumph has received 18 gold and 9 platinum awards in Canada and the United States. The band was formed by Toronto music veterans Gil Moore (drums, vocals), Mike Levine (bass, keyboards), and Rik Emmett (guitar, vocals) in 1975. It is most important to note that "Somebody Out There", "Love Hurts", "Child of the City" and "Lay It On the Line" are all the SAME GODDAMN BAND. WHAAAAATTTT?!?!
