The Mentors are an American punk rock band formed in 1976. They gained notoriety for their explicit lyrics, provocative stage presence, and controversial image. The band's lineup has changed over the years, but the founding member, Eldon "El Duce" Hoke, was the vocalist and drummer until his death in 1997. Their lyrics often revolve around themes of sex, drugs, and hedonism. The Mentors are best known for their album "You Axed for It!" released in 1985. Despite their provocative and often offensive content, the band has maintained a cult following in the punk and metal scenes. Keep in mind that their material is explicit, and listener discretion is advised. The Meatmen are an American punk rock band formed in 1981 by Tesco Vee, the band's vocalist and primary songwriter. They originated in Lansing, Michigan. The Meatmen are known for their humorous and often satirical lyrics, blending punk rock with elements of hardcore and garage rock. Tesco Vee, whose real name is Robert Vermeulen, has been the consistent driving force behind the band. The Meatmen gained recognition for their energetic live performances and a series of albums, including "Crippled Children Suck" (1982) and "Rock 'n' Roll Juggernaut" (1986). Their music often incorporates elements of parody and sarcasm, with lyrics that can be irreverent and politically incorrect. Jon Wurster started playing drums in Superchunk in the early 90s. He currently plays drums in The Mountain Goats and with Bob Mould. He also famously played the character Ronald Thomas Clontle on The Best Show with Tom Scharpling and declared that Madness invented ska! And Jon certainly jokes around about ska a lot, but when he was a teenager, he really loved the 2 Tone ska bands like The Specials and English Beat. He was also a big fan of The Hooters during their early 80s ska phase. And more recently, Jon skanked and played tambourine on stage during the infamous Ska No Children incident. (Sad Snack opened for The Mountain Goats in San Francisco and played their ska cover of "No Children.") We bring Jon on today to talk about ska. He tells us that he used to practice drums to the Dance Craze soundtrack. We talk about his connection to the band Dead Milkmen. (Amongst other things, he booked their first show!) We discuss his nickname Johnny Earthshoe and we talk about two key shows he attended with The Police. This week host Scott Crawford spoke with Tesco Vee (a.k.a. Robert Vermeulen)—frontman for the Meatmen and Tesco Vee's Hate Police. Vee's career started in the 1970s in Michigan where he started "Touch and Go" fanzine (which would later become Touch and Go Records) and as leader of the Meatmen. 82-year-old Texas BBQ pitmaster Tootsie Tomanetz is the guest this week on the Best BBQ Show. Tootsie helps run the pits at one of the best BBQ places in the world, Snow's BBQ in Lexington, Texas. You've heard about Snow's Barbecue before on the show, but this is the first time the great Tootsie has sat down to chat with the Meat Men. In the interview Tootsie talks about being world famous while still working as a janitor for a local school district and more fun stories. When Kerry Bexley opened Snow's in 2003 he knew immediately he wanted Tootsie as his star. When Kerry was young he remembered her Central Texas meat market and her legendary ham sandwiches. When Snow's was named the best bbq in Texas by Texas Monthly in 2008, the state (and then the world) began to notice the magic made there every Saturday. Thanks for listening! Kerry Bexley, owner of Snow’s BBQ, knew there was a demand for good BBQ in the small town of Lexington with a population of only 1100 people. Lexington has always been known for its Saturday BBQ. It’s just a tradition! Kerry and Ms. Tootsie Tomanetz, pit boss, discussed the possibilities in the late 90’s of opening a BBQ joint, but took no action until several years later. In November of 2002, Kerry stopped to visit with Ms. Tootsie, kicked the ashes around, and discussed again the opening of this joint. She told Kerry that if he was serious, they better sit down and have a real “heart to heart”. They did just that, and Kerry immediately started building the BBQ pits. March 1, 2003, was the first day of business… and Kerry’s intuition was right. Good BBQ, good service, and friendly people has helped to keep the fire burning, maintaining a steady and consistent business for the last five years. Along with Ms. Tootsie and Kerry, his daughters help out each Saturday morning learning the importance of responsibility and dealing with the public. he fire almost got out of control in May 2008 when Texas Monthly magazine named Snow’s BBQ as the best in Texas! Since that time, the entire staff at Snow’s BBQ has been doing everything possible to keep up with the demand and most important, maintain the quality. It looks like a long road ahead, but it is a challenge everyone is ready for.
