M., MacFarlane, M. Abstract: Dysregulated mitochondrial fusion and fission has been implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases. We have identified a novel function of the p53 family protein TAp73 in regulating mitochondrial dynamics. TAp73 regulates the expression of Optic atrophy 1, a protein responsible for controlling mitochondrial fusion, cristae biogenesis and electron transport chain function. Disruption of this axis results in a fragmented mitochondrial network and an impaired capacity for energy production via oxidative phosphorylation. Owing to the role of OPA1 in modulating cytochrome c release, TAp73-/- cells also display an increased sensitivity to apoptotic cell death, e.g., via BH3-mimetics. We also show that the TAp73/OPA1 axis has functional relevance in the upper airway, where TAp73 expression is essential for multiciliated cell differentiation and function. Consistently, ciliated epithelial cells of Trp73-/- (global p73 KO) mice display decreased expression of OPA1 and perturbations of the mitochondrial network, which may drive multiciliated cell loss. In support of this, Trp73 and OPA1 expression is decreased in COPD patients, a disease characterised by alterations in mitochondrial dynamics. We therefore highlight a potential mechanism involving the loss of p73 in COPD pathogenesis. This work also adds to the growing body of evidence for growth-promoting roles of TAp73 isoforms. For this week’s episode, I’m joined by NYU psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of several books, including (with Greg Lukianoff) The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure and The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion. Jonathan is also the co-founder of Heterodox Academy, where I serve on the advisory council. Despite that connection, this is our first extended public conversation. This is not, however, the first time I’ve engaged with Jon. After a talk some years ago, I asked Jon a question during the Q&A session, which I reintroduce here. Heterodox Academy’s mission is very important, but does focusing exclusively on viewpoint diversity prevent us from acknowledging that some viewpoints are more cogent than others? Jon’s recent Atlantic article “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid” generated a lot of discussion, and he elaborates on his theory of “structural stupidity” here. He claims that, at the national level, the Republican Party’s hostility to moderation has made it structurally stupid and unable to examine its own premises, while left-dominated “epistemic institutions,” like journalism and academia, are mired in their own kind of structural stupidity. I find the structural analysis compelling, but I think it elides the fact that some of the Republicans’ policy position are not, in themselves, stupid at all. Jon is concerned that increasing intolerance on the left, especially on college campuses, may be caused by generational changes in child development. Gen Z is the first generation to have had access to social media as children, and they also had far less unsupervised free play than previous generations. I ask Jon whether this shift can account for groupthink around COVID-induced school shutdowns and drastic changes in attitudes toward trans and racial issues in the US. While the academy no doubt leans left, there is much more viewpoint diversity in economics departments than other areas. Jon has some interesting ideas about why. And finally, I ask Jon whether religion could play a role in increasing viewpoint diversity. It was great to finally connect with Jon. Ten-Step Meditation for Pain Relief Technique Meditation can help with coping and pain relief. This technique works best if practiced every day for 20 minutes. Here I will review how to do this meditation for pain relief exercise including 10 easy steps that you can practice every day to relieve pain and a description of what you can expect when you do this meditation. Find a quiet place with minimal distractions where you can be undisturbed for 20 minutes. Get into a comfortable position, such as sitting in a firm but comfortable chair with feet flat on the floor, legs and arms uncrossed, and hands in the lap or at the sides. The 10 steps we will practice: 1. Calm breathing 2. Passive awareness 3. Body scan 4. Noticing and accepting 5. Focus on breaths 6. Repeat a meaningful phrase 7. Noticing and accepting 8. Passive awareness 9. Calm breathing 10. Brief stretch For a 20-minute meditation session, each step will take about 2 minutes, but it is fine to spend more time on some steps than on others according to your preferences. There is no right or wrong way to meditate; what is most important is to keep a passive attitude, simply allowing and observing without trying to make anything happen. Go through each of these steps in order to do the full meditation for pain relief exercise. 1. Calm breathing – breathe slowly in and slowly out. Observe each breath and allow your breathing to become deep, slow, and calm. 2. Passive awareness – become aware of everything perceived by the senses by noticing one thing at a time. Notice one sound you can hear. Notice how your clothing feels against your skin. Notice your breaths. Notice your pain. Observe without trying to change anything. 3. Body scan – concentrate your attention on one area of your body at a time, starting at the tips of your toes, and moving your focus slowly upward all the way to the top of your head. Observe without trying to change how your body feels. 4. Noticing and accepting – observe your thoughts without trying to make any changes. Accept each thought that arises and allow it to move on. 5. Focus on breaths – concentrate on your breathing. Observe each breath as it enters and leaves the body. 6. Repeat a meaningful phrase – choose a phrase that is meaningful to you and repeat it with each breath in, and with each breath out. Every time your mind wanders, focus again on repeating the phrase. 7. Noticing and accepting – observe your thoughts without trying to make any changes. Accept each thought that arises and allow it to move on. 8. Passive awareness – become aware of everything perceived by the senses by noticing one thing at a time. Observe without trying to change anything. 9. Calm breathing – breathe slowly in and slowly out. Observe each breath and allow your breathing to become deep, slow, and calm. 10. Brief stretch – open your eyes. Stretch your muscles. Take a moment to reflect on the meditation experience. What to Expect During and after the meditation for pain relief session you will probably feel calm and relaxed, and your mood may improve. Your pain is likely to be less upsetting, less noticeable, and easier to tolerate. With practice you will become more and more skilled at meditating and more easily enter a relaxed, focused state of mind. After just a few days you might start to notice improvements in concentration, memory, sleep, and coping. As your skills improve further, it is possible to develop the ability to directly eliminate pain through meditating (Morone et al. 2008). «Oggi ho comunicato ufficialmente le mie dimissioni dall’Associazione Rousseau. È stata un’esperienza durata cinque anni, di cui due da dipendente a Milano e gli ultimi tre da socio mentre continuavo la mia attività professionale a Roma. I cinque anni precedenti ho lavorato alla Casaleggio Associati, a supporto di Gianroberto e Beppe, tra il computer alla scrivania e l’iPad sul camper, tra l’ufficio e i palchi. Il primo colloquio in via Morone, dieci anni fa, lo feci con Davide Casaleggio. Si può quindi dire che è la prima persona che ha creduto in me e che mi ha dato un’opportunità. Per questo, e per tante altre cose, gli sono sempre stato e gli sarò sempre riconoscente. La stima e l’affetto nei suoi confronti sono immutati». Lo ha annunciato con un post su Facebook Pietro Dettori, consigliere del ministro degli Esteri, Luigi Di Maio. «Gli ultimi mesi sono stati difficili e la conclusione delle vicende, tutt’altro che indolore, è nota a tutti. La strada che ho scelto io è diversa. Perché io nel MoVimento ci credo ancora. Chi mi conosce sa che con il MoVimento ho un rapporto quasi carnale. D’altronde quel tipo di lavoro, se non c’è la passione a sostenerti, non lo reggi», ha spiegato. «Nel futuro del MoVimento ci credo innanzitutto perché mi fido di Beppe Grillo. Beppe è il nostro garante e nei momenti più critici della nostra storia è sempre stato lucido, a dispetto di chi lo etichetta solo come un pazzo visionario. Ha indicato un orizzonte (il 2050) e una persona (Giuseppe Conte) per il rilancio del MoVimento. Io non posso che fidarmi e invito chi in questo sogno ci crede ancora e chi ora tentenna, a fare altrettanto. Non so cosa ci riserva il futuro. Non so quali saranno le nostre prossime battaglie. Non so cosa il MoVimento politicamente deve o non deve fare. Di questo si discuterà nei modi e nei tempi opportuni e potrò dire la mia, assieme a migliaia di persone, in qualità di iscritto. Quello che so è che dobbiamo ritornare a essere una comunità di persone che si vogliono bene, in cui la fiducia è alla base dei rapporti personali, politici e professionali. Il momento di passaggio che stiamo vivendo è travagliato, doloroso, lacerante. Non è la prima volta però che affrontiamo un momento così. Ricordate quando ci presentammo alle politiche nel 2013? Molti pensavano che fosse contro i principi del MoVimento entrare in Parlamento e tanti li perdemmo. E quando Beppe si proclamò capo politico per rispettare la norma elettorale? Apriti cielo! E quando cambiammo lo statuto nel 2017? Anche lì si parlò di fine del MoVimento “originale”. Oggi tanti la vivono così e gli scontri e le incomprensioni, al nostro interno, sono all’ordine del giorno», si legge ancora nel post. «Dobbiamo guardare oltre. Il modo migliore per farlo è lasciarci alle spalle i rancori. Per lungo tempo abbiamo usato il “vaffanculo” come parola taumaturgica. Oggi dobbiamo usare il "grazie". Dobbiamo essere grati per quello che abbiamo realizzato e per le possibilità che ancora oggi abbiamo. E per questo dobbiamo ringraziare tutti quelli che hanno fatto parte della nostra storia, in un modo o nell’altro.Grazie a tutte le migliaia di attivisti, iscritti, consiglieri che da anni continuano a lavorare ognuno secondo le proprie possibilità: chi in comune, sul posto di lavoro, ai banchetti al freddo o in marcia sotto il sole. His broad research interests include human-computer interaction, human-centered machine learning, and social computing. His research focuses on studying the relationships between human-generated data and computing technologies to mitigate the negative impacts of these technologies. His work relates to concepts such as "data dignity", "data as labor", "data leverage", and "data dividends". Kaliya Young also known as the "Identity Woman" has spent the last 15 years working to bring about the creation of a new layer of the internet for people based on open standards. She co-founding the Internet Identity Workshop, which was recently profiled in the Wired UK. In 2017 she graduated in the very first cohort from UT Austin's iSchool with a Master of Science in Identity Management and Security. Her master's thesis The Domains of Identity: A framework for understanding identity systems in contemporary society is being published this month by Anthem Press. In 2019, she traveled to India for two months as a New America India-US Public Interest Technology fellow to study Aadhaar their national ID system. James Morone (Ph.D., University of Chicago) is professor and chair of political science at Brown University. Described as a born "color commentator" on religion, culture and American politics, Morone is widely recognized for his outstanding teaching, having been awarded the Hazeltine Citation by students in the Brown University classes of 1993, 1999, 2001, 2007 and 2008 for being the professor that most inspired them. Morone has long been at the forefront of writing on American government, politics and culture. His first book, The Democratic Wish: Popular Participation and the Limits of American Government, was named a “notable book of 1991” by the New York Times and won the Political Science Association’s Kammerer Award for the best book on the United States. His 2003 book, Hellfire Nation: The Politics of Sin in American History, has been featured on C-span, named book of the month by the History News Network, and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His most recent book, The Heart of Power: Health and Politics in the Oval Office from Roosevelt to Bush (2009, co-written with David Blumenthal, M.D.), returned him to an issue that shaped much of his scholarly work and was featured on the front page of the New York Times Book Review. Morone has written over 150 articles, essays, and book reviews and regularly comments on political issues for shows like The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, CBS, Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, Fox News, C Span, NPR’s Market Place, Morning Edition, Science Friday and other shows. He writes regularly for The London Review of Books, The American Prospect Magazine, and The New York Times. Morone has been president of the New England Political Science Association and the Politics and History section of the American Political Science Association. He was distinguished Fulbright lecturer to Japan in 2005, has served on the editorial board of eight scholarly journals (chairing two of them), and has testified before the U.S. Congress numerous times, most recently in January 2009 when he addressed the newly elected members of Congress on health reform. Morone is the only scholar to receive two Senior Investigator Awards from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Morone grew up in Rio de Janeiro and New York, received his bachelor's degree from Middlebury College and his doctoral degree from the University of Chicago, and continues to examine the sources and dynamics of religion, culture, and identity in American politics in three current book projects, George Washington’s Regret: Timeless Debates that Define America, In Search of American Culture, and Who Are We?.
