On January 15, 1974, 15-year-old Charlie Otero and his siblings came home in Wichita, Kansas, to find their family murdered — the first known victims of the BTK killer: Bind, Torture, Kill. Dennis Rader, a father, church leader, and city worker, hid in plain sight while terrorising a community for decades. After years of taunting the police, he was finally caught in 2005. His daughter, Kerri Rawson, later shared her story. In the new Netflix documentary My Father the BTK Killer, director Skye Borgman explores Kerri’s journey. She also directed Unknown Number, about Kendra Licari — the mother who anonymously harassed her own daughter online for nearly a year. Skye joins us to talk about both disturbing true crime stories. #187 The Great Snatching Away [3] | 1 Corinthians 15:1-34

Way of the Bible

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2025 28:18

Welcome to Episode #187 of the Way of the Bible podcast. This is our third of eight episodes in our Twenty-Fourth mini-series entitled The Return of Jesus Christ [3]. On today's episode, we will continue expanding upon the greatest news for the church, the Great Snatching Away, harpazo/rapture, the resurrection/translation of the bride of Christ. We'll start with a quick context reminder and then hit our lesson for today, which will be the first half of 1 Corinthians 15. But before then, why the harpazo/rapio, the great snatching away? The reason for the great snatching away in the Bible is to remove the church from the world before God judges the world with great tribulations and wrath. We will address that near the end of this mini-series. The New Testament writers, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, clearly wanted the body of Christ to know that Jesus was coming back and to anticipate his return at any moment. The normal Christian life, as described in the epistles, is not sitting on one's hands in regard to one's faith life while playing with trinkets in the world, passing away the time to break the boredom of communing with God. The normal Christian life is to live your new life in the kingdom, a holy and righteous life of love for God and neighbor as we wait for our Savior, the bridegroom, to appear in the sky above to take us, his bride, home.John the Baptist spoke of the church and Jesus in John 3:29 – The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. In the New Testament, Jesus is the bridegroom, the church is the bride, and the Old Testament saints, including John the Baptist, are friends of the bridegroom. It says of the bride of Christ in Revelation 19:6-8 – Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God's holy people.)Jesus spoke to his disciples in the Upper Room discourse about his wedding preparations to bring home his bride. John 14:1-3 – “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2  My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.  We know that Jesus, our bridegroom, went away physically on the day of his ascension into heaven. Acts 1:10- They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”As Jesus went up in the ascension, so shall he return in like manner. We see that in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 – For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God.That catches us up on what we need to know for today's episode. We'll do some tying up of loose ends after our next episode, where we finish an overview of 1 Corinthians 15. And before we get to the first portion of 1 Corinthians 15 for today, let's put what Paul is about to address in context.

What treasure would I seek and find and keep that can compare with my Identity? And would I rather live with fear than love? You are my goal, my Father. What but You could I desire to have? What way but that which leads to You could I desire to walk? And what except the memory of You could signify to me the end of dreams and futile substitutions for the truth? You are my only goal. She's the daughter of Dennis Rader, the BTK killer who murdered 10 people over nearly two decades while pretending to be a normal dad.Imagine finding out your Boy Scout leader father, who danced with you to John Denver and took you on family vacations, is one of America's most notorious serial killers. That's Kerri's reality. And 20 years later, she's still processing it.This show hit...differently. Because it's not about him. It's about the wreckage he left behind. The family trying to make sense of the senseless. The daughter asking herself how she didn't see the monster living in her house.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/we-saw-the-devil-a-true-crime-podcast--4433638/support.Website: http://www.wesawthedevil.comPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/wesawthedevilDiscord: https://discord.gg/X2qYXdB4Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/WeSawtheDevilInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/wesawthedevilpodcast.

Todaywe're continuing to look at Ephesians 2:10. We are talking about the good worksthat are produced after salvation in our lives through the ministry and work ofthe Holy Spirit. “God working in us both the will and to do of His goodpleasure” (Philippians 2:13). We always need to remember we are not savedby good works but we're saved unto good works and for good works for the gloryof God. James 2 makes it really clear that we're justified before God by faith, but before men, and even the assurance that we have of our own salvation, isthe fact that we have a faith that works for us and in us and through us andproduces good works because faith as he says at least three times in verses 14through 26, that “faith without works is dead”.  TheBible speaks of many different kinds of works. There are the “works of thelaw” in Galatians 2:16. There are the “works of the flesh” that arelisted in Galatians 5:19-21. There are the “works of darkness” in Romans13:12 and Ephesians 5:11. There are the “dead works” in Hebrews 6:1 thatlead to death. Then there are the “works of righteousness” in Titus 3:5that refer to religious works, or in other words, good deeds that we think cangive us our salvation and make us holy before God. But remember Isaiah declaresthat all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags in God's sight (Isaiah 64:6).My friend, if our righteousnesses are filthy, oh, what must our sins look like? Theworks that Paul's talking about in Ephesians 2:10 here have two specialcharacteristics. First, they are good works in contrast to the works ofdarkness and wicked works. If you contrast Ephesians 2:10 and Ephesians 2:2,you'll see that the unbeliever has Satan working in him and therefore his worksare not good. Because the believer has God working in him, therefore, his worksare good. His works are not good because he himself is good, but because he hasa new nature from God and because the Holy Spirit works in him and through himto produce these good works. My life verse has been Philippians chapter 1:6: “Beingconfident of this very thing that He who has begun the good work in you, Hewill perform it. He will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”.  Itis sad today that so many believers put a little emphasis or no emphasis on theworks of the believer because they don't want to mix it up with works andsalvation. But the Bible makes a big deal about our works in Matthew 5:16. “Letyour light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorifyyour Father which is in heaven”. We don't perform good works to glorifyourselves but to glorify our Father which is in heaven. The apostle Pauldesired that Christ would be magnified in his body even if it meant death.Philippians 1:20-21. We should “abound to every good work” (2Corinthians 9:8). We should be “fruitful in every good work” (Colossians1:10). We are “equipped by God for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17). Weshould be “zealous unto good works and maintain them” (Titus 2:14). Wefind also in Hebrews 13:16 that our good works are actually “spiritualsacrifices that we offer to God”. It'simportant to note that we don't manufacture these good works. They're theresult of God working in our heart. Paul said, "By the grace of God, Iam what I am" . My friend, when you truly have been born again and the Spirit of God lives in you, therewill be good works produced in your life for the glory of God and others willsee it and magnify God and many will believe. Rememberour good works are evidence that we have been born again. "Not everyonethat says unto Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but hethat does the will of My Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21).Our good works are also testimonies to the lost (1 Peter 2:12). Our good worksthat are produced by the fruits of the Holy Spirit in us will also win us theright to be heard.

JOHN 10:1-21 - I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD - BRIAN SUMNER - 2025“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.Jesus the Good Shepherd7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. 15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.17 “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”19 Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. 20 And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?”21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”To support this channel and partner with Brian in Ministryhttps://www.briansumner.net/support/For more on Brianhttp://www.briansumner.nethttps://www.instagram.com/BRIANSUMNER/https://www.facebook.com/BRIANSUMNEROFFICIALTo listen to Brians Podcast, click below.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Purchase Brians Marriage book at https://www.amazon.com/Never-Fails-Da...Brian is a full time "Urban Missionary" both locally and internationally with a focus on MISSIONS - MARRIAGES - MINISTRY. Since coming to faith in 2004 doors continued opening locally and internationally to do more and more ministry with a focus on Evangelism, Outreach Missions, Marriage, Counsel, Schools, Festivals, Conferences and the like.  Everything about this ministry is made possible because of people personally partnering through the non profit. God Bless and thank you. †Support the showSUPPORT THE SHOW

What was the impact of the Osho / Rajneesh cult on the families of members? Why might some people struggle to heal old wounds? To what extent is abuse of children still unacknowledged? How can telling one's story facilitate recovery?Lily Dunn is an author, teacher and mentor of literary memoir. She explores its potential in her new book, Into Being, which cites many writers including herself – Lily's last book, Sins of My Father, describes her enchantment with an absent parent, who joined the Rajneeshees and later drank himself to death.Examining this tangled relationship revealed her father's narcissistic avoidance of responsibility. This was common in communes, with painful effects on the children raised there – sex with minors was widespread, as Lily noted in an article that brought her into contact with survivors of abuse. One was Maroesja Perizonius, a Dutch director with whom Lily worked to develop a film titled Children of the Cult – available here if you're in the UK, with a trailer here. Their stories were ignored by the Netflix series, Wild Wild Country, which focused instead on other cult transgressions, such as bioterrorism. Our conversation explores all these topics, along with some practical guidance on writing, and the value of external help – from editors, mentors and therapists – in reducing the risk of self-deception. In the process, we consider what distinguishes creative non-fiction from making things up.

What is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit mediates between illusions and the truth. Since He must bridge the gap between reality and dreams, perception leads to knowledge through the grace that God has given Him, to be His gift to everyone who turns to Him for truth. Across the bridge that He provides are dreams all carried to the truth, to be dispelled before the light of knowledge. There are sights and sounds forever laid aside. And where they were perceived before, forgiveness has made possible perception's tranquil end.The goal the Holy Spirit's teaching sets is just this end of dreams. For sights and sounds must be translated from the witnesses of fear to those of love. And when this is entirely accomplished, learning has achieved the only goal it has in truth. For learning, as the Holy Spirit guides it to the outcome He perceives for it, becomes the means to go beyond itself, to be replaced by the Eternal Truth. If you but knew how much your Father yearns to have you recognize your sinlessness, you would not let His Voice appeal in vain, nor turn away from His replacement for the fearful images and dreams you made. The Holy Spirit understands the means you made, by which you would attain what is forever unattainable. And if you offer them to Him, He will employ the means you made for exile to restore your mind to where it truly is at home. From knowledge, where He has been placed by God, the Holy Spirit calls to you, to let forgiveness rest upon your dreams, and be restored to sanity and peace of mind. Without forgiveness will your dreams remain to terrify you. And the memory of all your Father's Love will not return to signify the end of dreams has come.Accept your Father's gift. It is a call from Love to Love, that It be but Itself. The Holy Spirit is His gift, by which the quietness of Heaven is restored to God's beloved Son. Would you refuse to take the function of completing God, when all He wills is that you be complete?LESSON 281I Can Be Hurt By Nothing But My Thoughts.Father, Your Son is perfect. When I think that I am hurt in any way, it is because I have forgotten who I am, and that I am as You created me. Your Thoughts can only bring me happiness. If ever I am sad or hurt or ill, I have forgotten what You think, and put my little meaningless ideas in place of where Your Thoughts belong, and where they are. I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts. The Thoughts I think with You can only bless. The Thoughts I think with You alone are true.I will not hurt myself today. For I am far beyond all pain. My Father placed me safe in Heaven, watching over me. And I would not attack the Son He loves, for what He loves is also mine to love.- Jesus Christ in ACIM

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! — 1 John 3:1 It is a stunning truth: God the Father is not only the Father of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but he is also the Father of each one who trusts in the sacrifice of Jesus for their salvation. Ponder this glorious truth for a moment. The God who, out of nothing, created the heavens and the earth and everything in them and who upholds and rules them is not simply my God, but he is also my Father! God the Spirit testifies to our spirits that he is our “Abba, Father.” Abba is an Aramaic word that children would use to call on their father; in English the equivalent for this could be “Daddy” or “Papa.” Marveling at the fact that the Almighty God is our “Abba, Father” is good for our faith. If you are able to travel out into the countryside at night, leaving the glare of city lights behind, look up at the star-filled sky. When I can do that, I often marvel and think, “My Father made all of this.” God has a name for every star, and he knows if any go missing! Though he is so powerful and mighty, God also loves me so much that he gave his Son to die for me. Our almighty Father loves us so much that we can trust him to provide whatever we need for body and soul. And he will turn to our good whatever troubles may come our way in this world (see Romans 8:28). Lord and God, we stand in awe that you are our Father and that you love us more than any earthly parent could. Help us to grow in our love for you and our trust in you. Amen.

Their connection began 18 years ago in a high school classroom, when Greg's compassion led him to step in for a classmate who needed a friend. What began as a simple act of kindness grew into a story of redemption, restoration, and faith that comes full circle in this conversation.Sarah opens her heart with honesty and vulnerability, sharing her journey through brokenness, shame, adultery, and hidden battles, and how God's relentless love never stopped pursuing her. She reflects on what it means to remove the “religious mask,” to wrestle with sin while still hungering for God, and how true freedom comes when we surrender fully to Him.Together, Sarah and I talked about:The surprising way Greg stepped into Sarah's life during a season of heartbreak and how his kindness left a lasting impactGrowing up with a praying mother, early seeds of faith, and the struggles that led Sarah away from GodThe turning point moments where God called her back — away from addiction, performance, and hidingThe power of obedience, community, and boldly sharing your faith in a world that wants you to stay silentHow to discern authenticity in others' faith journeys (and your own)This episode is a reminder that chains can be broken, shame can be lifted, and God's grace can restore what feels too far gone. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”John 16:33 (ESV) I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. LEAVE SOME THINGS BEHINDMatthew 26:36-37 (NIV) Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.II. NAME IT WITH OTHERSMatthew 26:38 (NIV) Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” III. LESSON 279Creation's Freedom Promises My Own.The end of dreams is promised me, because God's Son is not abandoned by His Love. Only in dreams is there a time when he appears to be in prison, and awaits a future freedom, if it be at all. Yet in reality his dreams are gone, with truth established in their place. And now is freedom his already. Should I wait in chains which have been severed for release, when God is offering me freedom now?I will accept Your promises today, and give my faith to them. 808 No One Is Able To Snatch Them Out Of The Father's Hand, A Guided Christian Meditation on John 10:26-30 with the Recenter With Christ app The purpose of this podcast is to help you find more peace in  and connect with the true source of peace, Jesus Christ.  Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization.  You can sit comfortably and uninterrupted for about 20 minutes. You should hopefully not be driving or anything tense or unrelaxing.  If you feel comfortable to do so, I invite you to close your eyes.   Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation:   Breathe and direct your thoughts to connecting with God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate,  deflate. Scripture for Meditation NASB 26 But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep. 27 My sheep listen to My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” KJV 26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one. Reflection on Scripture: Many things came to mind reading this passage. It has so much meaning. It deals with questions that have been questioned in Christianity for a huge amount of time. Its also a bit nerve wrecking. If we are not God's sheep it seems there is no hope for us. With that said what is the distinguishing factor on wether we are His sheep? That we hear His voice and follow Him. Yet with that said it seems to miss an incredibly important element of Grace if we feel that we save ourselves through our choice of following God. That feels off. The only reason we are even able to be considered His sheep is because the Father gave the Son us as sheep. When I sat pondering what devotional message we could pull out of this, perhaps the best thing that we could focus on is gratitude.  What profound gratitude we should feel to the loving God we have who offers redemption. I am so very grateful for that! When you ponder the offer that He gives it should fill you with gratitude. He offers eternal salvation and forgiveness from a profound grace in the face of our moral failure. Whatever fear you feel for not being considered one of God's speed, you should feel equally encouraged by the profound Love that God offers. In that gratitude embrace faith in Jesus. Not a faith that he arbitrarily goes around saving people, but a faith that what He says will happen. That faith is us hearing His voice.  Nobody will be able to pluck you out of His hand. There is no secret angry Father God behind the scenes who wants to destroy you but Jesus makes that God reluctantly forgive you. There is one perspective of God, one where you are loved and he wants you to live forever in heaven. Reject fear and move toward a kind of faith that aligns with believing in Jesus but also believing him enough do follow what He says.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling patient for your own faults and trials. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Final Question: If you consider the invitation and command to persevere in the faith, what change in your life does that bring to your mind?  FIND ME ON: Download my free app: Recenter with Christ Website - ChristianMeditationPodcast.com Voicemail - (602) 888-3795 Email: jared@christianmeditationpodcast.com Apple Podcasts - Christian Meditation Podcast Facebook.com/christianmeditationpodcast Youtube.com/christianmeditaitonpodcast Twitter - @ChristianMedPod

John 9:1-6,As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud…”When we describe a person as polarizing, what do we typically mean? Well, we mean that that person is someone who tends to cause heightened responses in others just about everywhere they go. In other words, were you to follow around a polarizing person throughout their day, you would find in their wake: wave after wave of people who either really, really liked having that person around, or really, really didn't.Typically, we call a person polarizing because of something that's bad within them. Maybe they use foul language. Maybe they lie or cheat. Maybe they treat other people unjustly. It's the darkness within them, that has the polarizing effect. Well, when it comes to Jesus, I think it's safe to say that he is a polarizing person. In fact, I'd dare to say he is the most polarizing person in the history of the world. But unlike so many others, the reason Jesus is polarizing is not because of inward darkness, but light.Jesus is not just good, but so good, and so holy, and so just that when he comes around, he exposes our darkness. He reveals that we're really not as good as we thought. When he does, some turn, and come to the light, and others flee.In this morning's passage, we're going to see Jesus' polarizing effect in full force. And we'll see it in the form of peoples' responses to three claims about Jesus: Jesus Does the Work of GodJesus Is Sent From GodJesus Himself Is God Let's pray, and ask God to help us once more ….So, three polarizing claims about Jesus: Jesus does the work of God, Jesus is sent from God, and Jesus himself is God. We'll begin with that first one.A Man Born BlindVerse 1,“As he [Jesus] passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.”A man who'd likely been sitting out on the roadside, hands held out, all day long, hoping to feel the cold, weighted touch of a coin being dropped into his hand. Verse 8 tells us that this man was a beggar. And the reason he was a beggar was not because he wanted to be. It's not like he grew up dreaming that one day this would be his life — sitting on the side of a road, day after day, as the people of his community passed him by.But, the fact is, he'd been born blind. Light, for whatever reason, had just never reached his eyes. And because of that, there was no job that he could hold. No service that he could offer. He was doomed to a life of begging — looking out for help from a world he had never once seen. And who knows how many people might have passed him by that day prior to Jesus and his disciples. How many people, just like Jesus' disciples, asking the question: “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” But when Jesus and his disciples came by that day, something unique happened. To the question of why he'd been born blind, came an answer that, for once, didn't cite sin as the reason for his blindness. Rather, verse 3:“It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” Works of God, in me? Think of it. All this man has ever known is blindness — a kind of blindness thought to be the mark of God's curse over him. Suddenly, he hears: God has a purpose. God has a design. “You mean to tell me I've been made this way to show something good and wonderful about God?” Jesus says, “Yes, and I'm here to make it happen.” Which brings us to our first claim: Jesus does the work of God.1. Jesus Does the Work of GodVerse 4, Jesus says to his disciples,“We must work the works of him who sent me…”We must do it. For,“…night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”You hear what Jesus is saying? I'm the light. And I'm here. But I won't always be. Therefore, the time to work is now.So Jesus spits on the dirt, mashes it into mud, and spreads it upon the man's eyes. Far from improving his vision, at this point, if anything, Jesus has made his vision worse. He's covered over his already blind eyes. But, he doesn't leave the man that way. He tells him, “Go, wash.” And the man does. Verse 7:“So he went and washed and came back seeing.”The man could finally see! He could see! Light, colors, shapes, faces — can you imagine seeing all these things for the very first time in your life!? It's a miracle! And Jesus did it. Because Jesus does the work of God. He calls us to as well. Verse 4 reads,“We must work the works of him who sent me.”What works of God might God be calling you to? What kind word, what helping hand, what giving up of your time might you be able to walk in and say, we're doing it. We're doing the works of God that he has called us to, as a church. Ephesians 2:10,“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”Sabbath WorkNow from here, the formerly blind man is going to get shuffled around a bit. First he'll go before his neighbors, then the Pharisees, then his parents. And the reason he's going to get shuffled around is not mainly because his eyes were opened. See it with me in verse 13. Following a back-and-forth with the neighbors, we read, in verse 13:“They [the man's neighbors] brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.”And now, we've got to ask ourselves, why did they do this? What prompted them, on the heels of such a miracle, to not say, “Let's bring you to the mountains and show you the sunrise. Let's bring you to the riverbank so you can watch the water shine. Let's bring you into the city to show you architecture and design.”But, instead, let's bring you to the Pharisees. What prompted that instinct in them? What made them to think, “hmm, the Pharisees ought to see this”?We find out in the very next verse. Verse 14:“Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.” We've seen this before, haven't we? Back in chapter 5, we had another healing miracle with incredibly close parallels to this one. And there, the problem was that Jesus had worked the miracle on the Sabbath. That had angered the Pharisees then. And not because Jesus had broken one of God's Laws. He hadn't. But because he had broken one of theirs. Now a few chapters later, here we are again. It's the Sabbath. And thanks to the events of chapter 5, the neighbors now know how the Pharisees feel about healing on the Sabbath. And so when Jesus gives sight to this blind man, the neighbors think, “we ought to bring this now seeing man to the Pharisees to find out if this was okay.”Follow along with me at verse 14:“Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, ‘He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.'”Now, it's unclear exactly what the problem was. It seems though that it could have had to do with the mud. After all, John clearly wants us to know about the fact that Jesus made mud. He records that detail twice in verse 6, then again in verse 11, again in verse 14, and again in verse 15.And the Pharisees did have a law concerning the making of a dough, or mud, on the Sabbath. Might seem strange, but think about it: both dough and mud can be associated with work — Dough for baking, Mud or mortar for building. So Jesus may well have made this mud on the Sabbath for that very purpose — to show that the Pharisees laws were not God's.Well regardless of the reason, the fact is: Jesus gave sight to a blind man on the Sabbath and the Pharisees didn't like it. Enter, our second claim: Jesus is sent from God. 2. Jesus Is Sent From GodIt'll begin with the Pharisees claim to the contrary. See it with me in verse 16, some of the Pharisees said,“This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”That's their assessment of him. Jesus is not from God, if he was, he'd obey our laws. But as we read in John 1:1,“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.”And as Jesus says in John 3:13,“No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven.”Descended from God.John 5:24, Jesus says,“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life.”John 7:29 Jesus claims,“I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”John 8:42,“If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.”And then, of course, from our text this morning, John 9:4,“We must work the works of him who sent me.”Jesus is from God. The Pharisees take Jesus' work on the Sabbath to be a proof he's not. But what John has been laboring to show us throughout his gospel is that it is because Jesus is from God that he does the works of God, even on the Sabbath. Just as Jesus said back in 5:17,“My Father is working until now, and I am working.”Jesus is from God. He's sent from God to do the works of God. But the Pharisees can't see that. And the reason they can't is because they are spiritually blind. What about the formerly blind man? His physical blindness has been healed, but has his spiritual blindness been healed as well? There's certainly been a progression. First time he's asked about his healing, he seems to know little about Jesus. He simply calls him a man. Verse 11:“The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes.”Then in verse 17, in response to the Pharisees, he calls Jesus not just a man but a prophet. Someone who speaks the words of God and does the works of God. It's quite a statement to make in the presence of these learned, powerful elite who clearly think otherwise. And yet, it's not yet a claim to Jesus' divinity. Something more is needed.Blind ParentsWell, the next group of people to be called in are the man's own parents who confirm to the Pharisees, “Yes,” verse 20,“We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes.”Does that strike you as just a bit odd? Someone has rescued their son from a lifetime of blindness. And yet they don't know who it was? Like, they just didn't think to ask, “Hey, by the way, son, who'd you say it was who healed you?” No, but instead, they tell the Pharisees, verse 21:“Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”You know what they're doing in this moment? They are lying. And they are lying because they care more about their own public perception than their son. See it with me. Verse 22. John is abundantly clear:“(His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.”You see it? His parents knew it was Jesus who had healed their son. And they also knew that if they told the Pharisees that, and even suggested that could mean Jesus was the Christ, they'd be kicked out of the Synagogue — exiled from their community and way of life. So, they lied. And they sicced the dogs on their son instead.“Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”And we might add, speak for himself, by himself. For by now, this man has been sold out by his neighbors, sold out by his parents, and turned over to the Pharisees who have their teeth bared.Verse 24:“So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, ‘Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.' The man refuses to agree with them. 'He answered, ‘Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.'”Verse 26, the Pharisees fire back, asking him the same exact question they've already asked him:“What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” And now, have you ever been on hold with customer service before? Maybe you've called a company about a faulty product, or a project that just wasn't done right. And every time you got through to someone, they just kept asking you the same question, “Sir, could you tell us the reason for your call?” You tell them, then they just transfer you to the next guy.It gets tiring having to answer the same question over-and-over, right? Well, by this time, the man has already given his answer to his neighbors and to these Pharisees. And so, he responds in verse 27, how we'd expect:“I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” Wrong About MosesAnd this is where things get interesting, because Moses is going to get referenced. And, listen, you just know that any time Moses gets mentioned in the New Testament, things are about to get interesting. Here's what they say — Verse 28:“And they reviled him, saying, ‘You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.'” And then, the incredible irony:“We know that God has spoken to Moses.”And they're right. It's true. God had spoken to Moses. And do you know who God had spoken to Moses about? Jesus — the very one they're trying to kill. And Jesus had already told them that, back 5:46,“If you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.”Spiritual blindness is a terrifying thing, is it not? The Pharisees have called Jesus a sinner. They've put terror in the hearts of those around them. They've claimed to follow Moses and yet disclaimed the very one he wrote about. Spiritual blindness is terrifying. At least with physical blindness you know your condition. These Pharisees are blind to the reality of God in the world, and they don't even realize it. In fact, they think they can see better than all the others. And when the formerly blind man calls them on this, they think he's the one with the problem, verse 34:“You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?”They are intending to kill Jesus, and yet they say the man in front of him — he's the sinner. And to top it all off, verse 34, they cast the man out of the synagogue.See this man with me now. Quite a day it has been for him, yes? Just that morning, like every other morning of his life, he'd woken up blind. Blind he'd eaten his breakfast. Blind he'd been led to the roadside. Blind he'd sat begging. Now he sees. But the cost of his seeing has involved his neighbors, his parents, and the Pharisees all essentially disowning him — sending him away with the words, “You were born in utter sin” ringing in his ears. Now, he stands, alone. Eyes open, but alone.Has his life improved? Have things gotten better for him? Sure, he can now see, but all he sees is exile. He's on his own. Rejected. Discarded. Cast out. The man is alone. But Jesus does not leave him there. Jesus hears what has happened, and goes after him. Others have sent him away, but Jesus goes out to find him. To speak to him. To give him one of the greatest gifts in all the world — spiritual sight.Verse 35:“Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?'”The man responds, verse 36:“And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?”Jesus answers:“You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.”And the man who had been born blind can suddenly see with spiritual sight. Verse 38,“He said, ‘Lord, I believe,' and he worshiped him.”3. Jesus Himself Is GodAnd he worshiped him because Jesus is God. That's our third and final claim — Jesus is God. Here's a Jewish man that was raised up on Moses, the Ten Commandments, and the Hebrew Scriptures. A man who knows God is one, Yahweh is his name. But then he drops to his knees to worship a man named Jesus. In Revelation 19, the same thing happened to one of the angels. When it did, the angel shouted out: “You must not do that!” In Acts 14, the residents of Lystra begin bowing down in worship of Paul and Barnabas. When they do, Paul and Barnabas tear their robes and cry: “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you.”But when Jesus is worshiped, he doesn't protest. He receives.Jesus receives worship because Jesus is God. Jesus does the work of God. Jesus was sent from God. And, Jesus is God.Jesus is a polarizing figure, yes? Just as he'll say near the close of this section, verse 39,“For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”So there really are two choices: spiritual sight or spiritual blindness. Spiritual light or spiritual darkness. Fist shaking at Jesus or knees bowing before him. And so I want to invite you today if you are here this morning, and you want to see. See that Jesus is more than just a man. More than just a prophet. But God himself. Ask him.Jesus, come find me too.Come help me see you are the Son of Man. If you don't, you will remain in darkness. Guilt for your sin, just as Jesus says in verse 41, will remain. Don't live in the dark. Don't stay in your guilt. Ask Jesus to help you see, and he will. He will.If you are here today and like this man can say, I was spiritually blind and now I see: Realize that just as Jesus found this man in his rejection, his isolation, his loneliness, so has he come and found you as well. You see because he gave you eyes to see.Brothers and sisters, never take that sight for granted. It is one of the greatest gifts you could ever receive. Should you lose all and yet still have spiritual sight, you still have all. Treasure your spiritual sight and use it to see and enjoy Jesus every day.The TableNow, what brings us to the table this morning is both the reminder of Jesus' spilled blood and broken body, as well as the promise that one day we will eat a far greater meal with him in Heaven. There, we will finally see him, face-to-face. Because that's what this table represents, I gladly invite those who are trusting in Jesus' death on their behalf, to take and eat this meal with us. If you've not put your trust in Jesus, we ask that you'd let the elements pass for now, and instead take this moment to ask Jesus,Help me to see.

It's Thursday, September 25th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark The martyrdom of 1,624 Christians A Vatican commission has documented the stories of 1,624 Christians who died for their faith over the past 25 years. The stories cover Christians from all denominations. Of the cases, 643 were in Sub-Saharan Africa, 357 in Asia and Oceania, 304 in the Americas, 277 in the Middle East and the Maghreb, and 43 in Europe.  Archbishop Fabio Fabene is the head of the commission. He noted that “Martyrdom has existed in every age of the Church, but perhaps now more than in the past, many surrender their lives in order not to betray the message of Christ.” Typhoon prompts 2 million Chinese to evacuate Typhoon Ragasa made landfall in China yesterday.  Nearly two million people evacuated southern China ahead of the storm. The typhoon is equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, making it the world's most powerful storm this year.  The typhoon left a path of destruction in the Philippines and Hong Kong and killed at least 17 people in Taiwan.  Oracle to buy Chinese-owned TikTok to allay security concerns Speaking of China, officials from the country reached an agreement with leaders from the United States last week about the Chinese-owned app TikTok. According to the deal, the tech company Oracle will lead a U.S.-backed acquisition of TikTok's assets in America. This is part of the Trump administration's efforts to address national security concerns of China's control over TikTok.    Listen to comments from U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. GREER: “We were very focused on Tiktok and making sure that it was a deal that is fair from the Chinese and completely respects US national security concerns. And that's the deal we reached.” False prophet had predicted end of the world by September 24th Meanwhile on TikTok, claims that the rapture was supposed to have occurred in the last two days went viral this week. The reactions came in response to a video from a South African man named Joshua Mhlakela. He claimed to have a vision that Jesus would return on the 23rd or 24th of September.  I guess he was wrong! The hashtag #rapturenow on TikTok has hundreds of thousands of videos. In the wake of the false predictions, Rev. Franklin Graham called people to turn to Christ, not panic. He wrote on Facebook, “There's no question, Jesus Christ will return—but we don't know when. Jesus Himself tells us, ‘But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of Heaven, but My Father only' (Matthew 24:36)”  Graham concluded, “Surrender your life to Him—this is the preparation that will count.” Chicago dropped charges against 3 street preachers The American Center for Law and Justice announced that a court in Chicago dropped charges against three street preachers this month.  In the case, police arrested three young men for peacefully preaching the Gospel near Chicago's Millennium Park. After six months of court battles, the judge recently dismissed the case.  The ACLJ wrote on Facebook, “Far-Left cities are arresting preachers for sharing the Gospel. We just filed a brief at the U.S. Supreme Court to defend their religious liberty. Help stop the far Left's attack on preachers. Sign our petition.”  You can sign that petition through a link in our transcript today at TheWorldview.com.  Texas law prohibits manufacture or distribution of abortion kill pill Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed the Woman and Child Protection Act into law last Wednesday.  The law makes it illegal to manufacture or distribute abortion-inducing drugs in the Lone Star State. It also bans mailing such drugs to or from any person or location in the state. The chemical abortion business has surged after many states passed anti-abortion laws. For example, ever since Texas protected babies in the womb after six weeks gestation, it has seen nearly 20,000 abortion kill pills mailed into the state annually. Most Americans believe we're born without sin nature And finally, Lifeway Research and Ligonier Ministries released their latest State of Theology study. A majority of U.S. adults strongly embraced ideas like the Trinity, God's perfection and unchangeableness, and marriage as the union of one man and one woman.  However, a majority of Americans also strongly agreed that everyone is born innocent in the eyes of God and strongly disagreed that even the smallest sin deserves eternal damnation.  Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, noted, “When a clear majority of Americans think God is flexible when it comes to religion, it's not surprising that agreement with some teachings in the Bible does not translate to accepting all biblical teaching. Americans want the same flexibility they think God has, even if that contradicts other beliefs they have and how God is revealed in Scripture.” James 1:17 reminds us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, September 25th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com). JOHN 8:31-59 - BEFORE ABRAHAM I AM - BRIAN SUMNER - 2025"Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free'?”34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.37 “I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.”39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.”Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.”Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.”42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.' 53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?”54 Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. 55 Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,' I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”59 Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going[p] through the midst of them, and so passed by.”To support this channel and partner with Brian in Ministryhttps://www.briansumner.net/support/For more on Brianhttp://www.briansumner.nethttps://www.instagram.com/BRIANSUMNER/https://www.facebook.com/BRIANSUMNEROFFICIALTo listen to Brians Podcast, click below.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Purchase Brians Marriage book at https://www.amazon.com/Never-Fails-Da...Brian is a full tiSupport the showSUPPORT THE SHOW

Earlier this year, a new movie called “My Father's Shadow” made history when it became the first Nigerian film to be officially selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Set over the course of a single day in Lagos in 1993 (a day that happens to be one of the most catastrophic in Nigerian history), the film follows two young boys who join their father on a trip to the city so he can collect his paycheck. The story is semi-autobiographical, based on director Akinola Davies Jr.'s own family experiences. During this year's Toronto International Film Festival, Akinola sat down with Tom Power to talk about memory, Nigeria's lesser known history, and the stuff you learn about your parents after they're gone.
