John 8:19-20, So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also. These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come. What is meant by “His hour”? I think “hour” could be synonymous to “time”. “His”—a possessive pronoun. Whatever “hour” is, it belongs to Him. Is it His hour of testing? Hour of temptation? Hour of suffering? Hour of power? Hour of prayer? Hour of glory? All are true. But notice that His hour is the same as the Father's hour. The Father determined it and orchestrated it, and the Son authorized it. The hour began when Judas left the upper room at Jesus' command. John 13:31-32 “Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, 'Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.'” God's love controls every “hour” of our lives. He gives them to us so we might glorify Him. May we glorify our Father in heaven in every hour as we live to love with Jesus. To know Jesus is to know His Father—God Himself. If you know what Jesus loves, you know what God loves. Of Jesus, the Father says, “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.” (Hebrews 1:9). Do we love righteousness and hate lawlessness? Let's give Him freshly stirred love for righteousness today. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. AT HOME WITH GOD I've had a lot of questions over the years of what I think Heaven would be like. I would like to have the answers, especially in the last little while. And I'm content to wait for God to show us in his time. But what I'm going to talk about today is something that has been on my heart for some time and I've felt a deeper understanding of what Jesus was teaching us about his hope and faith and love for our lives here on earth that will continue on in Heaven. We know we will get a new supernatural body at the time of the Final Resurrection when Jesus comes back. But there is still a time in between - being with the Lord in Heaven before that Final Resurrection that I'm going to look at here, and it is clear that we will have a recognisable resurrected body just as Jesus had when he walked the earth for forty days after his resurrection. But other than that, we cannot be specific It has not yet been revealed what we shall be (1 John 3:2). I'm speaking today about being at home with God in our inner being whether we are on earth, or whether we are at home with him in Heaven. Jesus tried to explain to his disciples about how he was leaving them to go and be at home with his Father and he said he was going to prepare a home for them also. He used the word ‘mansion' to describe that home (mone – abiding with, making a home. God being at home with us and us being at home with God. John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you… that where I am, there you may be also. Jesus went on to say If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home (mansion – mone) with him. So I have two questions. How do we build that house so that we can be at home with God and he can be at home with him? And how do we live in that house? We will look first at how Paul tells us how to start to build the house. 1Corinthians 3:10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. The foundation is the work of Jesus Christ, the foundation stone that gave his life for us that we could become partakers of the Divine nature through the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit in us burns off the dead wood of dead works of wood and hay and stubble, such as ego and ambition and superficial superspiritual success. He transforms us into the likeness of Jesus. The likeness of Jesus is the silver and the gold. The silver represents his redeeming mercy and forgiveness, and the gold represents the nature of God. The fire represents the trials of faith spoken of by Peter. 1Peter 1: 7,9 For a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, or a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with unspeakable joy and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls We will now look at how to live in the house by looking at some things we have mentioned that Jesus has said. Jesus said in my Father's house there are many mansions (mone – at home with God). I go to prepare a place for you.(John 14:2). There is a unique individual mone for every person ever born – no two people build the same house for God. Jesus said My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home (mansion – mone) with him. (John 14:23). The unique spiritual home (mone-mansion) that we build with God and for God becomes the dwelling place for The Father and Jesus and the Holy Spirit who each have a role to play for us and with us in the building and the purpose and meaning to be expressed in that house that is our home. The Father is the designer and provider of the style, the furniture the decoration, the colour and the variety and character of the house. That lovely House of yours that the Father designed with you will draw people to meet Jesus in your unique and special way. Just as he designed every little detail of his creation here on earth. With such intention, beauty, and creativity and with its own personal nature – just look around you. Jesus is the word of truth and faith and love grace that creates the life and character of the conversation in the house. That becomes the expression of how we are in the world and in relationship with the people around us. When you work on building your HOUSE with good things, the right paint and furnishings and plan, burning off the deadwood of the ego and getting rid of as much junk as you can and making an inviting HOME with the Father, then Jesus, the WORD will speak through you naturally in His way, and You can trust in that and have Faith for it. The Holy Spirit is the one who transforms every person who is welcomed into our house. This transformation starts with us and touches the minds and hearts of all who come in. The Holy Spirit is the Translator and interpreter. You won't have to try to get your point across, the Holy Spirit does that for you. You won't need to strive in your opinions to make people believe what you say, or to “Get it” because they will supernaturally hear and understand by the grace of God it. That is his job and he does it well. We get caught up in thinking its our job. That was always the way Christianity was meant to be. Jesus said once to his disciples You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. (John 5:39). Jesus challenges the Church to hear those words and do them. Too often the Church seems to have had a better idea about knowing God – Just read about him and argue with one another about what the Bible says about him. We have 36,000 Christian denominations making too much room for everyone telling his neighbour about God and perhaps not enough room to let God be at home in us and us at home in him. That way we would share about who we know around a family table instead of debate about what we know from behind a pulpit. It is not too late to start and my hunger for spiritual fellowship is to bring Him whom we are getting to know to a living table in a living room in a spiritual home that he is dwelling in and that he is helping us to build. We are offered the opportunity to build that home in which we can be at home with God. Paul said I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7) But Paul also tells us that even though a course on earth may be finished, there is more to come in Heaven. He even tells us that he experienced being taken to the third Heaven to see Heavenly mysteries that he was not permitted to utter on the earth (2Corinthians 12:2). He tells us that when all earthly things pass away faith and hope and love will continue to operate eternally. 1Corinthians 13:12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. Only Jesus finished his eternal course completely on earth, but for everybody else there will be age to age learning of the unfolding of the revelation of the nature of God to us. We are offered our course to be lived at home with him on the earth and then he brings us to our home in Heaven where a greater dimension of building that home with him continues to unfold. The more we dwell with the Father and Jesus and the Holy Spirit – at home with God here on earth the more they unveil who they are to us, whether we are here on earth or in Heaven, because faith and hope and love are eternal and will remain from age to age for people to come to know and love God more and more. Saturday, 6 September 2025 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:50 “For whoever, if he should do the determination of My Father, the ‘in heavens,' he – he is – My brother and sister and mother” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus extended His hand toward the disciples and exclaimed, “Here are My mother and My brothers!” In order to explain that, He next says, “For whoever, if he should do the determination of My Father, the ‘in heavens.'” Jesus sets the parameters for whom He is referring from the previous verse, explaining what He meant. But what is the “determination of My Father” that He is referring to? The answer to the thought is found in John 6 – “Then they said to Him, ‘What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?' 29 Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.'” John 6:26 This explains what Jesus is referring to. Jesus is not (by a long shot) telling His hearers that they must observe the Law of Moses. That is what Jesus came to fulfill. He is not telling us that He is kin to the stock of Israel and that we must bless them to receive a blessing, even if His literal descent is from Israel. He does not say that those who have big churches full of wealthy congregants are His family. The famous, beautiful, athletic, politically connected, royalty, etc., are excluded without believing in Jesus. Cutting out all categories of people, Jesus identifies those whom He is referring to as those doing “the ‘determination of'” His Father. To exactingly identify them, He next closes out Matthew 12, emphatically saying, “he – he is – My brother and sister and mother.” Genealogy is excluded. This is why Paul says – “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:26-29 Paul further says – “Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.” 1 Corinthians 1:20, 21 It is true that at the time of Jesus' ministry, those of Israel who were under the law were expected to observe the law. Nobody should dispute that. But Jesus' words in John 6, as explained by Paul and the other apostles in the epistles, tell us that we are to have faith in the works of the Son. His works include sinless perfection in His life before the law, His death in fulfillment of it, and His resurrection, which proved that it was so. Belief in this is what God expects of His people. This is the good news of Jesus Christ. Life application: To cut out much of the theological error that rushes your way from the pulpit, computer, TV screen, etc., remember what God is doing in the world as explained in Scripture. God has a plan of redemption set forth to restore humanity to Himself. That plan of redemption is based on the work of His Son, Jesus Christ. This plan, centered on His Son, is often co-opted by those who want to control others in various ways. At the time of the early church, it was Judaizers coming in and trusting in the flesh, boasting over those they circumcised. As the church developed, various cults and sects have arisen to pull people away from the gospel. Eventually, the church became such a large and powerful entity that it exalted itself and its doctrines above the simple gospel. Because of this, the reformation occurred. In America, a nation that allows freedom of religion, people took advantage of others by proclaiming aberrant ideas through a manipulation of Scripture. Sometimes, there is the exalting of a particular version of Scripture, not Jesus, who is the focus of that Scripture, as a supposed necessary condition for salvation. Today, unconditionally supporting Israel, a nation that has rejected Jesus at this point, is said to be a necessary condition for receiving God's blessing. In fact, this false teaching is explicitly taught by many supposed Jesus-centered ministries. It is Jesus, not a person, Bible version, nation, or denomination, who brings salvation. When should believers support a church? The answer is when that church proclaims the gospel. When should believers exalt a people group or nation? The answer is when that nation exalts Jesus Christ. Israel, as a nation, has not yet done this. But unlike other nations, they are explicitly prophesied as someday doing so. For this reason, prayers for them should be raised to God that His will be done in this rebellious group of people. At the same time, we should be willing to evangelize and pray for all people, telling them about the saving message of Jesus Christ. This alone will bring people to a right relationship with God. “So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, 9 and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” Acts 15:8-11 Lord God, thank You for the simple gospel of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Help us to have our priorities right, clearly thinking through what it means to be in a right standing before You. Your word tells us what it is! It is through faith in Him and what He has done. Yes, thank You for this simple gospel. Amen. Matthew 12 12 In that time, Jesus, He went – the Sabbaths – through the grainfields, and His disciples, they hungered, and they began to pluck kernels and eat. 2 And the Pharisees, having seen, they said to Him, “You behold! Your disciples, they do what it permits not to do in Sabbath.” 3 And He said to them, “Not you read what he did, David, when he hungered, he and those with him? 4 How he entered into the house of God and the bread ‘the before-setting' they ate, which not it is being permitted him to eat, nor those with him, if not the priests only? 5 Or not you read in the law that, the Sabbaths, the priests in the temple the Sabbath profane, and they are guiltless? 6 And I say to you that the temple – greater, it is here. 7 And if you had known what it is, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' not you condemned the guiltless. 8 For Lord, He is – even of the Sabbath – the Son of Man.” 9 And having departed thence, He went into their synagogue. 10 And, you behold! Man, he is, having a withered hand. And they queried Him, saying, ‘If it permits, the Sabbaths, to cure?' That they should accuse Him. 11 And He said to them, “What man, he will be from you, who he will have one sheep, and if this, it should fall into a pit on the Sabbaths, not he will seize it and he will raise it? 12 Therefore, how much man – he excels a sheep! So too, it permits – the Sabbaths – to do good.” 13 Then He says to the man, ‘You outstretch your hand.' And he outstretched it, and it reconstituted, healthy as the other. 14 And the Pharisees, they took counsel against Him, having gone out, how they might kill Him. 15 And Jesus, having known, He withdrew thence. And they followed Him, great crowds. And He cured them all. 16 And He admonished them that not they should make Him apparent. 17 That it should be fulfilled, the ‘having been spoken' through Isaiah the prophet, saying: 18 “You behold! My Servant whom I chose, My beloved in whom it approved, My soul, I will place My Spirit upon Him, And judgment to the Gentiles, He will proclaim. 19 Not He will wrangle, nor He will clamor, Nor anyone – he will hear in the streets His voice. 20 A reed, being battered, not He will break, And flax being smoldered, not He will extinguish, Until if He ejects judgment into victory. 21 And in His name, Gentiles, they will hope.” 22 Then he was brought to Him ‘being demon possessed,' blind and mute, and He cured him, so the blind and mute speak and see. 23 And they were astounded, all the crowds. And they said, “Not any, this, He is the Son of David?” 24 And the Pharisees, having heard, they said, “This, not He ejects the demons if not in Beelzebul, prince of the demons.” 25 And Jesus, having known their thoughts, He said to them, “Every kingdom, having divided against itself, it desolates, and every city or house having divided against itself, not it will stand. 26 And if the Satan, he ejects the Satan, he divided upon himself. How then, it will stand, his kingdom? 27 And if I, I eject demons in Beelzebul, your sons – in whom do they eject? Through this they, they will be your judges. 28 And if in God's Spirit I, I eject the demons, then it preceded upon you, the ‘God's kingdom.' 29 Or how, any, he can enter into the house of the strong and his goods through-seize, if not first he should bind the strong? And then, his house he will through-seize. 30 The ‘not being with Me,' he is against me. And the ‘not gathering with Me,' he scatters. 31 Through this, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy, it will be forgiven men, but the ‘Spirit blasphemy' not it will be forgiven men. 32 And whoever if he should speak a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him. But whoever, if he should speak against the Holy Spirit, not it will be forgiven him, neither in this age, nor in the coming. 33 Either you make the tree good and the fruit of it good, or you make the tree rotten and the fruit of it rotten. For from the fruit, the tree – it is known. 34 Viper's offspring! You can, how, speak good – being evil? For from the surplus of the heart, the mouth, it speaks. 35 The good man, from the good treasure of the heart, he ejects good, and the evil man, from the evil treasure, he ejects evil. 36 And I say to you that every inactive utterance that if they will speak, men, they will render a word about it in judgment day. 37 For from your words, you will be justified, and from your words, you will be condemned.” 38 Then, they answered, some of the scribes and Pharisees, saying, “Teacher, we desire to see a sign from You.” 39 And having answered, He said to them, “Generation – evil and adulteress – it seeks a sign, and not it will be given it, if not the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 For just as Jonah, he was in the lunker's belly three days and three nights, thus He will be, the Son of Man, in the earth's heart three days and three nights. 41 Men, Nineveh, they will arise in the judgment with this generation and they will sentence it, for they reconsidered at the proclamation of Jonah. And you behold! Jonah's greater is here! 42 Queen, south, she will arise in the judgment with this generation and she will sentence it, for she came from the extremities of the land to hear Solomon's wisdom. And you behold! Solomon's greater is here. 43 And when the unclean spirit, it departs from the man, it traverses through waterless spots seeking rest, and it finds not. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house whence I departed.' And having come, it finds ‘holidaying,' having been swept and having been arranged. 45 Then it traverses, and it takes with itself seven other spirits, itself eviler, and having entered, it dwells there. And the last of that man, it becomes worse than the first. Thus it will be also – this evil generation.” 46 And He yet speaking to the crowds, you behold, His mother and His brothers had stood without seeking to speak to Him. 47 And, he said, someone to Him, “You behold! Your mother and Your brothers, they have stood without seeking to speak to You.” 48 And answering, He said to the ‘telling Him', “Who, she is, My mother, and who, they are, My brothers?” 49 And having extended His hand to His disciples, He said, “You behold! My mother and My brothers. 50 For whoever, if he should do the determination of My Father, the ‘in heavens,' he – he is – My brother and sister and mother.”
Welcometo Pastor's Chat. Today we're continuing to look at the ministry and work ofthe Holy Spirit as we are reading about Him in Ephesians 1:13-14. Jesuspromised in John 14 that He would give and send the Holy Spirit. John 14 beginswith Jesus assuring His disciples with these words and making several promisesto them: “Let not your heart be troubled…”. We live in a world full oftroubled and fearful hearts. Even believers today face tremendous fearconcerning so many different things in their lives, in their families, theirpersonal lives, and in a world today that is so confused, mixed up, and filledwith violence. But Jesus says, "Let not your heart be troubled. Youbelieve in God, believe also in Me." Thenin verses 16-20, Jesus promises them: “And I will pray the Father, and Hewill give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--theSpirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Himnor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will bein you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. "Alittle while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me.Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I amin My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” Howwill He come to them? He will come in the person and ministry and work of theHoly Spirit. Paul would later write, “Christ in you, the hope of glory”.“At that day…”, is speaking of what happened on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2,when the Holy Spirit came down on them as promised. Today the baptism andindwelling for the Holy Spirit begins the moment we trust Christ as ourpersonal Savior. At that very moment, the Holy Spirit, according to Romans 6:3,“baptizes us into the body of Christ”. Also in 1 Corinthians 12:13 weread: “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews orGreeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into oneSpirit.” Ephesians1:13 also tell us that we are also sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. Whatis the significance of this sealing of the Holy Spirit? For one thing, it speaksof a finished transaction. Even today, when important legaldocuments are processed, they are stamped with the official seal to signify thecompletion of the transaction. Thissealing also implies ownership: God has put his seal on us because Hehas purchased us to be His own. Read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Or do you notknow that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom youhave from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price;therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.” Thissealing also means security and protection. The Roman seal on the tombof Jesus carried this meaning (Matt. 27:62-66). So, the believer belongs toGod, and is safe and protected because he is a part of a finished transaction. Andaccording to John 14:16-17, the Holy Spirit abides with the believer forever.It is possible for us to grieve the Spirit and thereby lose the blessings ofHis ministry (Eph. 4:30). But He doesn't leave us. Anotheruse for the seal is as a mark of authenticity. Just as a signature on aletter attests to the genuineness of the document, so the presence of theSpirit proves the believer is genuine. "If any man have not the Spiritof Christ, he is none of His" (Romans. 8:9). It is not simply our lipprofession, our religious activity, or our good works, but the witness of theSpirit that makes our profession authentic. ThankGod for the ministry and work of the Holy Spirit in our lives today. Indeed,what a rich blessing from God the Holy Spirit. Godbless!
John 8:13-14, So the Pharisees said to Him, "You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true." Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going." The Pharisees didn't know, but now it is known. Jesus came from the Father in Heaven, and He went back to the Father in Heaven. He came to take away all our sins—everything that separates us from Him. He went back to the Father to intercede for us, so the Father would send us His Spirit to be with us forever and empower us with His presence to live and love with Him. His love in us is His testimony, and it is true. The Pharisees demanded more than one's own testimony about himself. They were looking for more proof of where Jesus was from before they would believe Him. Jesus' proof of where He was from was the work of the Father. Earlier in John 5:36-37, Jesus had told them, “But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish — the very works that I do — testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me.” In the same way, Jesus testifies about us that we are His disciples by the works He does in us. In John 13:34-35, Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 15:7-8 repeats this truth. “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.” Did you notice Jesus said, “It will be done for you?” Jesus loving in us is His testimony that we are from Him, just as the Father loving in Jesus is His testimony about where Jesus was from. That's why I have concluded that God saved us to glorify Himself through His Son loving in, through, and with us. In short, we glorify God by living to love with Jesus. Where are we from? We are from God. Where are we going? We are going to God in heaven. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. The Gospel of John Week 10 Scripture: John 6:22-7:24. Our teaching today starts with Jesus saying He is the Bread of Life. He is teaching from the synagogue at Capernaum. Jesus is the rabbi that is teaching. In a service in the synagogue in the first century, people talk back and forth asking questions and engaging with the rabbi. It can get heated - and what Jesus says is causing things to become heated. He continues to say many things in this dialogue: ⁃ I am the Bread of Life ⁃ Believe in Me and you will not hunger or thirst ⁃ You've seen Me yet you still do not believe ⁃ Whoever comes to Me I will not drive away ⁃ I have come down from heaven to do the Father's will ⁃ I will raise them on the last day ⁃ My Father's will is that everyone look to the Son and believe in Me ⁃ In Me is eternal life Pastor talks about a current day synagogue built on the first century synagogue there in Capernaum in Jesus' day and shares pictures. This current day synagogue is built on the foundation of the synagogue of Jesus' day.The foundation of black basalt from the first century is still visible. On this basalt foundation is built the several other synagogues with the newest synagogue built over these others. But the basalt rock shows us just where Jesus was as He gave the teaching we are studying today. Pastor also shares what the inside of a synagogue in Jesus' day would have looked like in order to help us visualize today's story As our story continues, John 6:53-57 “Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.” Pastor helps us understand this: ⁃ Jesus is Jewish ⁃ The crowd He's talking to is Jewish ⁃ Hearing what Jesus is saying - the listeners would have processed what Jesus was saying through a Jewish perspective - their thought would have gone to temple sacrifices where they brought their sacrifices to the Temple ⁃ The blood was drained from the animal and sprinkled on the altar because without the shedding of bleed there is no forgiveness ⁃ We have sinned against a Holy God and that requires blood to be shed ⁃ Jesus is saying here that He is the real sacrifice ⁃ “I am the One who offers up My flesh and blood for the life of the world” ⁃ “If you do not realize who I am, that I am the One the Father has promised, then you don't have life”The scriptures all along have said that God Himself would pay the price for our sin. Old Testament offerings were offered up day after day, year after year, but Jesus is the offering made once for all. Jesus is saying that He is the “Once for all sacrifice” and many of the people following Jesus turned away from Him after He said this. Jesus then turns to His disciples and asks if they want to leave Him too, but Peter answers: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” Note Peter says, “we have come to believe” and then he says, “and to know that You are the holy One of God.”This is highly significant as we human beings think that we know in order to believe. Pastor shares a personal story of an interaction from a friend who brought this truth to light that “I do not know in order o believer, instead, I believer in order to know God.” So many time we say, “if you prove this to me (once I know it) then I'll believe.” But what Jesus calls us to do is to believe FIRST and then we will know Him. John 8:12-20,Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” 19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.Last week we saw that Nicodemus told the Pharisees that they should give Jesus a hearing. Chapter 7, verse 51 he said: the law doesn't “judge a man until first giving him a hearing and learning what he does” (7:51). And again, this was the most reasonable thing said in Chapter 7, but the Pharisees completely wrote it off. They refuse to hear Jesus, and in Chapter 8 it gets even worse. Every time the Pharisees speak in Chapter 8, they reveal how off the rails they are with Jesus. They do not get him at all. We could call their example a masterclass in how to misunderstand Jesus — which we don't want to do!The Pharisees are a cautionary tale. And their bad responses to Jesus are so featured in this passage, you could argue it's the main idea here. John wants to make sure we take note of what they do, so that we don't make the same mistakes. That's how I'd like to organize the sermon. Today I want to show you three ways how NOT to be like the Pharisees — it all has to do with how we respond to Jesus. If you don't want to be like the Pharisees, here's the first thing you do with Jesus:1. Hear his word. Look at verse 12:Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Now, let's just stop here for a minute and consider how amazing this statement is. Keep in mind: this is not outta the blue. The Pharisees have a context for Jesus making some big claims: They've heard him say, John 2:19, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”They heard him say, John 5:17, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” (Which means he was calling God his Father and making himself equal with God, [v. 18]).They just heard him say, John 7:37, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.”These are big claims, and here in Chapter 8, verse 12, Jesus does it again.He says,“I am the light of the world.” And maybe you hear that and you're not really sure what he means; maybe you've got more questions; but regardless of your questions — even before you fully understand what he's saying, we all can see that Jesus is claiming something about himself in reference to the world. And that's a big deal. He's not saying “I am the light of Nazareth, my hometown.” Or “I was the light of my high school football team.” I was all-state.No, he is what he is “of the world.” As in the whole wide world. Could you imagine talking to someone today and in the conversation they claim to be something in reference to the whole wide world? Think about that. If someone told you they were anything of the world, you would either think they're crazy or at least be intrigued.And remember the context here: Jesus has already been making some big claims and he's done all these signs and people are believing in him.And so in that context of seeing and hearing all this from Jesus, when you hear him say he's the light of the world, how do you think you'd respond?You think you'd at least say, “Tell me more.” Or, “What kind of light?” But the Pharisees do nothing like that! Jesus makes this high-magnitude statement in verse 12, and look how the Pharisees respond, in verse 13,So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.”Get this: They completely ignore the content of what Jesus says, and they take issue with his form. Instead of actually hearing what he said, they throw a flag on how he said it! Basically, their reply is to say: “[Alarm sound] The current form of your speech has invalidated the claim.” They think they're so smart. They think they just dunked on Jesus. We're gonna talk more about this dialogue next week, but for today I just want you to notice what the Pharisees miss with Jesus. I want us to do what they don't do, which starts with hearing Jesus's word. Do What They Don'tWhen I say “hearing his word” I mean both the actual words of Jesus in John 8:12, and his word as in his message, which we have in the Bible. Hearing Jesus, listening to Jesus — for us this means that we read and pay attention to Holy Scripture. So I want you to make the connection here: ignoring Scripture means ignoring the word of Jesus; we ignore the word of Jesus by ignoring Scripture.Let's not do that. And this goes for all of us. Everybody, track with me here: Stop looking for reasons to deprive yourself from listening to Jesus. Because that is something we do. And we can try to come up with reasons for why.One reason you might deprive yourself from listening to Jesus is that you've got some church-hurt: Christians in the past have let you down. And truly, I'm sorry if that's part of your story. We all have different experiences here, and I want to be sensitive to that, and, at the same time, if Christians in the past have let you down, you should know that Christians in the future will let you down too. Because Christians are humans, and humans let other humans down. This is life on life's terms. And as frustrating and difficult as this is, it's not a reason to ignore Jesus. You gotta hear him. So if you're here and you need to get reacquainted with Jesus, or if you're brand-new to Jesus, I want to encourage you, give a fresh read to the Gospel of John. That's a really good place to start. Here's a great resource: Speak Life 321.But another reason you might deprive yourself from hearing the word of Jesus is that you don't have time. You're too busy. And of course, everybody is busy (or at least we all think we are). I've got a friend who grew up in Kentucky, and he told me that as a kid, every time he'd tell his Dad that he was hungry, his Dad would say, “Boy, you ain't never been hungry in your life.”I tried that out on a kid this summer. They told me they were too busy, and I said, “Child, you ain't never been busy in your life.” Some of us need to hear that.We gotta get out of the tunnel vision. We gotta look around. We make time for what matters most to us, and nobody is too busy to hear Jesus's word. We can't be.Hearing Jesus's word — reading the Bible — look, it's the non-negotiable for both first-time faith and for growing faith. This goes for everybody. You can't believe in Jesus, and you can't become like Jesus, apart from his word.The Pharisees refused to hear him; don't be like the Pharisees. Hear his word. The second way to not be like the Pharisees is …2. See his light. Unlike the Pharisees, we're not skipping what Jesus says in verse 12. We're not changing the subject. We're staying here the rest of the sermon because he says he's light of the world — and wanna know: “Tell me more” and “What kind of light?” Now there are a couple different angles we could take to try and understand what Jesus says…The historical context is the Feast of Booths, which we talked about last week. Jerusalem was crowded with people for this feast, and apparently, part of the festivities included a lighting ceremony in the temple. There would have been big lamps shining in the temple, and so some say Jesus is using his light metaphor to connect with that tangible experience. There were literal lights in the temple, so Jesus looked around and said he's the light. That's possible. Jesus did that sort of thing. But, this also is not the first time we've read about light in this Gospel. (There's the historical context of the event, but also the literary context of the text.) It goes back to the very start. John tells us right away about Jesus, Chapter 1, verse 4:“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”Verse 9,“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.”And John doesn't stop here. The light metaphor shows up all throughout the Gospel, and my hunch is that that's what we should be thinking about when we hear Jesus in Chapter 8, verse 12. So what kind of light is this?How does what John says about light in this Gospel help us here? Well, I don't think John means to narrow the metaphor to only one kind of light. Light is a broad metaphor and John likes to layer things, so I think this metaphor is layered. I think there are at least three kinds of light that Jesus is — he's an exposing light, an illumining light, and a welcoming light. I'll explain…Exposing lightThis is a light that exposes what is hidden. It calls out sin and banishes darkness. In the immediate context, this seems to be the front-runner idea because right after verse 12 the conversation is about judgment. Jesus also said back in Chapter 3, verse 19,“And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.”So no doubt, Jesus is an exposing light, and the Pharisees can't stand him. In Chapter 3, Jesus gave us a category for what the Pharisees are doing in Chapter 8. Jesus exposes.Illumining lightThis is a light that reveals or makes known. It's the kind of light you need when you're stuck in a cave and everything around you is dark. There's a way to go, but you can't see it. You need a flash light! You need a light to illumine the way. Jesus is this kind of light. That's what John Chapter 1 is getting at.John 1:18,“No one has ever seen God, but Jesus has made him known.”Jesus says in John 14:6,“Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” Jesus shows us God. He reveals God. He's an illumining light.Welcoming lightThis is a light that tells you where home is. Jesus is this kind of light. He says in John 12:46,“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” He said in John 12:36,“While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”That's an invitation, see…As an exposing light, Jesus exposes the sin we try to hide.As an illumining light, Jesus illumines the truth of God. As a welcoming light, Jesus invites us home.And it's this third one I want us to think more about … the welcoming light that Jesus is to this world.“I Saw the Light”Growing up in church in the South, we didn't always sing Hank Williams, but when we did, we sang his classic, “I Saw the Light.” Y'all know this song? …y'all know Hank Williams? He was the Hillbilly Shakespeare. There's a great story behind the song…It was 1947. Hank had played a concert somewhere in Alabama and afterwards went on a terrible drinking binge, almost drank himself to death; lost all touch with reality. His mother had come to get him and bring him home — he was only 23 years old. Well, his parents lived next to an airport and there was a big runway light that would sweep across the sky, and as the car got closer to home — he's barely awake in the backseat, but his mom's driving — she sees the sky light up, and she says, “Hank, I saw the light. We're almost home.”And the story goes that her words struck him. He might have been born again — we don't know, he had a complicated life — but in that moment, he managed to scribble down the lyrics to the song. It starts like this:I wandered so aimless, life filled with sinI wouldn't let my dear Savior inThen Jesus came like a stranger in the nightPraise the Lord, I saw the light“I saw the light” — it's a conversion song. To “see the light” is another way we talk about “believing in Jesus.” It means something has changed. Jesus is that kind of light.He's the lighthouse shining when you're surrounded by the raging sea; he's the sunrise that means your darkest night has ended; he's the front porch light left on when you've been in the far country — Jesus is the light of the world who says to all of us, “Come home.”He is shining and saying Believe in me and come home to God.But the Pharisees refuse to. They love their darkness. They love their lostness. And so Jesus tells them very directly in verse 24, “you will die in your sins.”Everybody, look: don't be like the Pharisees. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” See his light. Put your faith in Jesus Christ. And welcome home.Third way not to be like the Pharisees …3. Follow his path. This is the second part of verse 12. After Jesus makes the declaration that he's the light of the world, he follows that declaration with a conditional promise. And this one I really want you to see. So everybody, find verse 12:“I am the light of the world...”Second sentence — “…Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”The promise here is a negative/positive: you will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. That's a good promise, right? But it's conditional. This is not for everyone, but it's only for those who, Jesus says, follow me. Whoever follows me, that's who this promise applies to.And something interesting here is that Jesus uses the word “to follow.” He mostly uses the word to believe. It shows up a lot in the Gospel of John. He'll use it soon in verse 24, but here, in verse 12, he says Whoever follows me. And I don't know why exactly he does this. It might be because “follow” fits better with the metaphor: when you see the light, you follow it. You could believe light, but it makes more sense to follow light.But the main thing that I want you to catch here is that to truly believe in Jesus and to follow Jesus are one in the same. Being a Christ-FollowerNow lots of people might “believe” in Jesus as in they recognize his historicity — they recognize he was a real person and I like most of what he says — that kind of “believing” happens in this story, we'll see next week (8:30–31) — that's one kind of believing. But there's another kind of believing that means to follow him. And that's the believing Jesus is looking for. This is believing that says I'm looking to you and listening to you. I'll go where you lead me. I'll do what you say. I follow you.I met a new friend recently, one of the dads of my son's baseball teammates. We were standing together watching a practice, and in the conversation right away, I told him I was a Christian and I asked him if he had a Christian background — I've found that's a good way to start a spiritual conversation (most people have some kind of religious background).So I asked him, and he said, “Oh, yes, we are Christ-followers.”And I caught what he was doing there. He was letting me know, “Hey, I'm not a Christian as in my grandma took me to church when I was a kid.”I'm more Christian than just my background. My faith is not nominal. I follow Jesus. Now he didn't say that, but that's what he was saying.And I said to him, Praise God. You're not a Pharisee! (I didn't really say it, but I was thinking it.)See, the Pharisees had a lot of face-to-face with Jesus. They see him, they hear him, they've heard about him. Jesus became very much a part of their world. They couldn't deny him. But one thing they keep doing, and they do again here, is they refuse to follow him. Which then means they stay in darkness and don't have life.What about you? Do you follow Jesus? Is your believing true believing that means your highest allegiance is to Jesus? Whatever he wants, that's what you want. Do you follow him?Hey, don't be like the Pharisees. We need to see what they're like in this chapter so that we can run hard in the opposite direction, toward Jesus, which means we: Hear his word. See his light. Follow his path. That's what brings us to the Table. The TableWhat I've asked Jesus to do through this sermon is to bring you to himself. I don't know exactly what that means for each of you, but whatever it means, that's what I want Jesus to do. I got the idea from John Calvin. In his commentary on John 8:12, because of the promise — not walking in darkness, having the light of life — he writes,“…we ought to be excited to follow Jesus, and, indeed, by stretching out his hand — as it were — he draws us to himself.”Can you imagine that? Whatever you got going on in your life, Jesus is saying to you, Come on. Whether it's first-time faith or growing faith, Jesus — as it were — stretches out his hand to you this morning, and at his table we respond…If you're not yet a Christian, make today the day you truly believe. If you are a Christian, let's eat and drink now from his Table, and give him thanks.

According to scripture (John 5:17) when challenged to justify healing on the Sabbath, Jesus said "My Father is always working, and so am I." Perhaps this was a reminder that observing the Sabbath did not mean there is a cessation of the activity of God. And, because of our connection with God, there is a continuous activity or working that is taking place in us, through us and as us. As I was preparing for this sermon, I read something that John Stankey, the CEO of AT&T, said back in 2022 with the acquiring of HBO concerning his goals for HBO that I think was very perceptive. Its not hours a week, and its not hours a month. We need hours a day. You are competing with devices that sit in peoples hands that capture their attention every 15 seconds. I want more hours of engagement. Why are more hours of engagement important? Because you get more data and information about a customer that then allows you to do things like monetize through alternate models of advertising as well as subscriptions. Theres a reason why social media platforms, streaming services, etc. are called attention merchants. They are working hard to capture our attention. Some people also call it adhesiveness. The longer they can get us to stick around, the more money they make.[1] Stankey rebranded HBO to HBO Max, and under his leadership, subscriber growth more than doubled from 36 million to 76 million. Social media platforms rely on sophisticated algorithms to decide which content appears in your feed and in what order. These invisible gatekeepers shape your online experience, curating what you see and when you see it, all with the aim of keeping you engaged for longer periods. What is my point? My point is that there are pressures that you are both aware of and unaware of that seek to influence you. There may not have been the kinds of algorithms that we have today in the day, and age, James wrote his epistle, but they were no doubt there. There is a system that is spiritual that is opposed to God that wants to do all that it can to draw you away from Him, and that system is what the Bible calls the world. We were not made for the world, but for God. It is the tension we face as Christians to be pooled by the world or to draw close to God that he addresses in these verses. Going with the Current of the World is Friendship with the World (vv. 1-5) We gravitate towards the kinds of things James lists in verses 1-5. If comes naturally for us as a species to fight against each other. Remember what James wrote in 3:14; he said, But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart... your jealousy and selfish ambition is, earthly, natural, and demonic (v. 15). Then in 4:1, James informs us that the source of our fighting with one another comes from that part of us the apostle John described: All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world (1 John 2:16). What James means by World is the ethics and principles that are motivated by a desire to dethrone God. The wisdom of the world encourages those who live in it to cater to what you want, give yourself everything your eyes desire and live life your way to get the most of it. This is the wisdom of the world that James warns us of in chapter three, and it is here in chapter four that shows us how it affects everything around us. The Greek word for quarrels can mean battle, fights, strife, or conflicts. What instigates this kind of fighting with one another is what James calls our pleasures. This is another Greek word that you knew without knowing that you had it in your vocabulary (last week it was the Greek word zēlos that the NASB decided to translate jealous); the Greek word of pleasures is hēdonē from which we get the word hedonism. What is hedonism? You may think that it is the pursuit of pleasure, and it certainly is that, but at its core, hedonism is the pursuit of joy. In fact, what we learn from the Bible is that we were made to pursue and experience joy. There are scores of verses in the Bible I can show you, but for now, three should do: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! (Phil. 4:4) You will make known to me the way of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever. (Ps. 16:11) Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials... (Jas. 1:2) The Word of God encourages us to pursue joy. Blaise Pascale, the famous philosopher, observed: All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.[2] We even acknowledge that we were made for joy in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. However, what we were not made for is a joy that excludes a relationship with God. The kind of worldly wisdom and joy-seeking that leads to conflicts is a secular wisdom and the Godless pursuit of joy. This is kind of joy seeking is secular hedonism, and it is, earthly, natural, and demonic (3:14). What is the fruit of secular hedonism? James provides us with a list in verses that follow: Fact + result You lust and do not have... so you commit murder. (v. 2a) Fact + result You are envious and cannot obtain... so you fight and quarrel. (v. 2b) Fact + reason You do not have... because you do not ask. (v. 2c) Fact + result You ask and do not receive... (v. 3a) Full reason ...because you ask with the wrong motives, so that you may spend what you request on your pleasures. (v. 3b)[3] What kind of joy seeking is James describing? It is one where the pleasure and joy seeking is rooted in a world that is hostile towards God. Secular hedonism is self-centered joy seeking that makes the one pursuing it the center of his/her universe. So James accuses those who pursue such pleasures in verse 4 as adulteresses. Why? Because he is writing to Christians who should know better that the only joy we were created for and the one that is lasting, is a joy that can only be found in God. To seek your pleasure from this world, is to align yourself with the world by becoming its friend. To this, James states emphatically: do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God (v. 4). What do we do with verse five? What does James mean? There is much debate over the way this verse should be translated and some of the main versions of the English Bible show that. Theologians are divided over whether the Greek word for Spirit is referring to the immaterial part of us that we also call our soul or if it is the Holy Spirit that every Christian receives at the moment he/she becomes a Christian. Here is what I think James means by the statement: Do you think that the Scripture says to no purpose, He jealously desires the Spirit whom He has made to dwell in us? I think what he means is what we have seen in verses 1-4, and that is: we were made for a joy that can only be satisfied in God and the reason why He gave us a soul is the same reason He gave us the Holy Spirit, and that is to use our lives and to find our joy in Him. In other words, we were born on this earth to know God, but because we are dead in our sins, God caused us to be born again and has given us the Holy Spirit to empower us to live for Him for the purpose of finding our joy in Him (remember that James is writing to Christians). Abiding in the Word is Friendship with God (vv. 6-10) So what is the solution for the kind of problem James lists for us in verses 1-5? He provides us with the answer in verses 6-10. Its really found in verse 6; lets read it slowly and thoughtfully: But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says... What says? from the same Scripture in verse 5 James referred to: God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. God created you; you did not create Him. Of all the gods that people worship, there is only One who is the Creator and we were made for Him just as the apostle Paul testified before a group of idol worshipers at Mars Hill: He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might feel around for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, For we also are His descendants. (Acts 17:26-28) God created us to know Him, but humans are fallen, sin-cursed, and spiritually dead! What hope is there for a humanity bent on finding their satisfaction and joy in anything or anyone but the One who created mankind in His image? James doesnt need to explain the gospel again to his readers because they have already heard it and received it, all that he needs is one word, and that word is grace. Christian, how is it that you have gone from death to life in Jesus? How is it that you have been called out of darkness into Gods marvelous light? How is it that you have been born again and are now sealed by Gods Holy Spirit and are a child of God? Just one word will do! He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Because you have received a greater grace there is a greater joy available to you. Remember what it was that brought you to the cross of Christ: You came to Jesus because you were poor in spirit, you came to Him because you mourned over your sins, you came to Him because you could not save yourself. There is no coming to Jesus if you are not willing to humble yourself before Him; it is Jesus alone who is able to save and it is only by grace that you are born again today. Because there is a greater grace, there is a greater joy to be experienced through God. James explains where one can experience that joy through a series of imperatives. Lets read the passage and break these imperatives (commands) down so that you can see the point James is making: Submit therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God and He will come close to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you (vv. 7-10). The word submit comes from a Greek word that also means to attach yourself to the thing or person you are submitting to. To submit to God is not just to bow before Him, but also to attach yourself to Him. There is another word that the Bible uses for that same idea, and that word is abide which comes from a Greek word that also means to remain in. Attach yourself to the One you were made for! In verse 8, we are told to Come close to God... So what happens when we submit to God? We come close to Him. This is how I can resist the devil so that he will flee from me (v. 7). This is also how I can cleanse my hand and purify my heart. Listen, there is no getting closer to God if you are not willing to submit to God. There is no lasting joy if you are not abiding in Him. There will be no victory over sin in your life if you are not humbling yourself before Him (v. 10). What will happen as you submit to God and draw closer to Him? You will see your sin for what it is, but instead of coasting further from Him, you will run to Him because that is where grace is to be found in your time of need! This is the point of verse 9-10, Be miserable, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. What does it mean for God to exalt those who humble themselves before Him? He will give you the kind of joy you were made for, a joy available only through His Son. You were made for joy, but not the secular and godless kind that our world strives after. You were made for a joy and pleasure that can only be known in God by abiding in His Son. The question I have for you is this: What or who is it that has your attention and your heart? Arent you tired of pursuing lesser joys? There is a greater joy before you, but it can only be experienced by submitting yourself to God by drawing closer to Him. Let me close with something Jesus said that I think will make more sense to you in light of James 4:1-10, I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you; remain in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as I have kept My Fathers commandments and remain in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. (John 15:5-11) What Jesus describes and what James addresses is the kind of faith that abides in Him. John 7:39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. What an encouraging verse and wonderful reality. We have here the promise of the ministry of the Holy Spirit, who was to be given to believers, thirsty people who come to Jesus and drink of His life. Jesus became the fulfillment of the Feast of Tabernacles—God's provision of deliverance from sin, the bread of life, and the eternal supply of living water. At this time, Jesus was foretelling two things that were to come. One depended on the other. The Holy Spirit would not be given until Jesus was glorified. So this raises a couple of questions. What did He mean by glorified? What are the rivers of living water? The birth of the church was signified by the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. So we know that whatever Jesus had in mind, had occurred, or the Holy Spirit would not have been given. So what had occurred? He had, according to the Scriptures, both died for sins and had been raised from the dead for the justification of the church. He had ascended into heaven and taken His rightful place at the right hand of the Father. In John 14:20, Jesus told His disciples that when the Holy Spirit came, they would know that three things were true. “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” The gift of the Holy Spirit was the Father's testimony that He had glorified His Son. Jesus was in the Father, that the church had been raised up and seated with Jesus, and that Jesus was now coming to reside in His church as its glorious head. Maybe you remember how Jesus began His prayer to His Father in Gethsemane before going to the cross. “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You. Even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” God has glorified the Son by raising Him up and giving Him authority to give eternal life. Eternal life is given with the giving of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is called “the Spirit of Life” (Rom. 8:2). He manifests the presence and power of Jesus in our lives, as He loves us, fills us and flows through us, producing rivers of living water. We live to love with Jesus, being filled and sustained by the rivers of living water through the Holy Spirit. May you experience Jesus' fullness and the overflow of His love today. Matthew 26:36-39, 45-46Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” He took Peter and Zebedee's two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”Then he came to the disciples and said, “… look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Up, let's be going. Look, my betrayer is here!”The most courageous moment in the history of humankind is when Jesus made the final decision to redeem us. As fully human, like you or me…He stood at the last crossroads before the actual cross and said yes for us. The turning point in that battle was when He stated, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”In our final day of this week's series on courage, the way we may live in confidence and express courage in the face of any trial is by stating to God: “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”Think about the stories we have visited this week, David, Gideon, Ruth, and Esther—each one had to come to the place of saying “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Even David the warrior would have preferred to not risk his life that day, but he knew there was a much higher purpose for his life than protecting sheep.Where in your life today are you battling a decision or struggling with a calling? Where do you need to let go and follow Jesus into saying, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” And even repeat His words: “Look—the time has come. Up—let's be going.” The reality for you, though, is that your decision will not end in death. In fact, your personal courage could potentially create far more life than you ever knew before.Let's pray: “Lord Jesus, thank You that You made the choice for me in the garden. You chose God's will for redemption and sacrificed your own will and life. Help me now to follow Your example and continually say to You: “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” As above, so below.”

If you want to know what Christianity is, do not go to the church as she often appears; go to the New Testament. It is the Spirit who is the principal actor, and it is he who continues the ministry of Jesus through the apostles. Romans 8:26The greatest weakness in a person is trusting in their own strength and avoiding God. The greatest strength in a person is admitting their weakness and drawing strength from God's.42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” Matthew 26:42
