Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, says he doesn't rule out further strikes on Hamas leaders "wherever they are," despite being criticised for launching an attack on Qatari territory last week. Israel's decision to target senior Hamas leaders in Qatar - a close US ally - drew international outrage and criticism, even from US President Donald Trump. Mr Netanyahu was speaking after meeting the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who blamed Hamas and urged Qatar to continue to play a constructive role on Gaza. Ari Berman, voting rights correspondent for Mother Jones and author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2024), talks about his latest article on the "rapidly escalating" threats to America's election system, including how the Trump administration is making it harder to vote, the DOJ's civil rights division has dropped cases investigating gerrymandered maps in states such as Arizona, Georgia, and Texas and more.

In this moment in US history, fear has been weaponized as a political tool, using white nationalist rhetoric to target anyone who can be cast as a political enemy. Terms like “The Left” become labels for “enemies of the people” of “enemies of our country,” shifting categories that include anyone who refuses to conform to narrow and white nativist politics. Whenever claims of blameless white nationalism collapse, the claims simply change shape, becoming more and more nonsensical and impossible to pin down. The only constant is that “the people” and/or “our country” remain exclusionary concepts propelled forward always by fear and hatred of moving targets of perceived enemies. Meanwhile, African people—both descendants of the trafficked and the rest of the Black world—are a fixed entity among the moving targets. The wider non-White world and all those who choose to act in solidarity with our common humanity over racial exclusion are judged in relation to their generosity, seen as weakness by those who choose exclusionary fear and hate instead. As a result, threats to everyone's lives are real and persistent in a Social Structure where anyone can become an enemy at any moment. But there is another reality: The reality of our vastness, our reach and our capacity to outlast fear-based politics. We are everywhere, impossible to silence or eliminate. Every attempt to destroy us only reveals the hatreds at the heart of white supremacy and the politics of fear. We cannot be erased. It's not just a danger from the past. Thousands of children are sickened from lead poisoning each year across the country. This week we're looking at New York State which has older, poorly maintained housing stock in several areas, and where we've seen some of the highest incidences of lead poisoning in the country.  So why hasn't the state legislature passed the Lead Paint Right to Know Act, a bill that could help protect families from this entirely preventable harm? To learn more, we recently spoke with Shannon Burkett, a New York mother whose son Cooper was diagnosed with lead poisoning as an infant in 2008. On September 10th, during an event at Utah Valley University, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking in front of a crowd of thousands. In the hours after the shooting, many Americans speculated on why it happened. The alleged shooter was later identified as Tyler Robinson, who mentioned to a family friend that he was responsible for the death of Kirk. Retired FBI special agent and CEO of The Brunner Sierra Group, Daniel Brunner, joined the Rundown to discuss what went into the FBI's investigation and catching Kirk's killer.    A new study finds a 42% drop in reading for fun in the U.S. over the past 20 years. That decline is disturbing to some, as reading can be beneficial to one's mental health, sleep habits, and general well-being. September's highly anticipated meeting of the Federal Reserve starts tomorrow. This comes after months of President Donald Trump pressuring Chairman Jerome Powell for a rate cut. The president's public prodding of Powell coincides with his administration's ongoing effort to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook ahead of this week's key vote, accusing her of mortgage fraud. However, there have been no formal charges. While inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target, investors are betting on a cut this week. The question remains: how low could rates go, and how many cuts could happen this year?
