Caitlin Long, founder and CEO of Avanti Financial Group, talks about the issues plaguing the current state of technology in traditional finance and how her background as a 22-year Wall Street veteran, gubernatorial appointee to the Wyoming Blockchain Task Force, and crypto pioneer is helping her shape Avanti into a bridge between conventional banking and crypto. Tune in to hear Caitlin discuss: the current state of crypto adoption on Wall Street (1:09) how her entrepreneurial spirit galvanized a career spanning Wall Street, the Wyoming Legislature, and, now, crypto banking (2:07) why Caitlin fell in love with Bitcoin (4:57) fractional reserves and why the current financial system is a “violation of property rights” (7:00) how stablecoin technology will change banking leverage and what effects faster settlement times will have on inflation (11:30) why corporate treasurers have been using BTC since 2014 in foreign exchange transactions (17:14) what issues Wyoming is trying to solve through crypto legislation and why banks might be closing down customer accounts linked to crypto exchanges (19:18) a proposed Wyoming bill that would prohibit judges from disclosing private cryptographic keys (28:32) where the idea for Avanti came from and how it will be different than other banks (32:50) existing problems with stablecoin regulation and a deep-dive into GAAP accounting for crypto (46:51) why Wall Street’s accounting system is to blame for the GameStop and Robinhood situation (52:32) whether or not a blockchain could work for settling securities (52:32) her thoughts on pension funds and endowments directly owning crypto (59:54) what it is going to take for Avanti to successfully bridge the gap between traditional finance and crypto (1:02:38)   Thank you to our sponsors!  Crypto.com: https://bit.ly/3jzkTAD Download the Crypto.com app here: https://crypto.onelink.me/J9Lg/laurashinpodcasttesla   Square: http://square.com/go/unchained   Episode links:  Caitlin Long Twitter: https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_  Personal website: https://caitlin-long.com/  CoinDesk profile: https://www.coindesk.com/most-influential/2019/caitlin-long    Avanti Website:  https://avantibank.com/  Twitter announcement: https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1231958552790482950  Avit: https://www.coindesk.com/unpacking-the-avit-avanti-banks-new-digital-asset-being-built-with-blockstream  Banking charter: https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeldelcastillo/2020/10/28/avanti-unanimously-wins-bitcoin-banking-charter/?sh=50db610816aa  Wyoming and blockchain: https://www.coindesk.com/haven-blockchain-case-wyoming GAAP accounting and crypto: https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1356759511856410624  Trust charter vs. SPDI: https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1349850451374587907  Special purpose depository institutions: https://twitter.com/CaitlinLong_/status/1194022779730968577  Bailment: https://www.forbes.com/sites/andreatinianow/2019/03/07/a-split-emerges-in-blockchain-law-wyomings-approach-versus-the-supplemental-act/?sh=49635109719a  Caitlin on GameStop: https://www.coindesk.com/first-mover-crypto-gamestop-bitcoin-dogecoin    Previous Episodes   On How 'Utility Tokens' Are Now Legal in Wyoming, 2018 Why the ICE/BAKKT News Makes Some Crypto Investors Nervous, 2018 How Avanti Will Be a 'Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins' Bank, Feb 2020

In this episode, I am once again joined by Dhammarato – a lineage teacher in the Thai Buddhist tradition who is known for his unique, 1-1 teaching style conducted over Skype.  This interview was recorded in the lead up to a dialogue I will be hosting between Dhammarato and Daniel Ingram on the question ‘Is there magic in the dharma?’. In this episode, Dhammarato explores the Mahātanhāsankhaya Sutta, and draws out themes of magical thinking, continuation of consciousness, and dependent origination. Later Dhammarato gives his take on the Buddhist doctrines of rebirth and making merit, the Mahasi meditation method, the tulku system, and the Dalai Lama’s claims of reincarnation. We also discuss if the 8-fold path inevitably leads to individual renunciation and societal collapse, and what it means to ‘leave the fight’. … Video version at: https://www.guruviking.com/ep82-dhammarato-magical-thinking-in-buddhism/ Audio version of this podcast also available on iTunes and Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast’. ... 0:00 - Intro 0:54 - Dhammarato gives a summary of magical thinking and the Mahātanhāsankhaya Sutta 20:08 - The two levels of Dhammarato’s analysis 21:16 - How is it possible to read magical thinking into a sutta that refutes magical thinking? 25:51 - Placebo, causation, and useful ignorance 29:39 - Relationship of understanding of cause and effect to suffering 33:42 - Craving, perception, and the 4 Modes of Clinging 50:10 - Repetition and understanding how the mind works 53:46 - How to see through the Self 57:08 - Critique of the Mahasi Method and Thai vs Burmese meditation 1:00:44 - Who or what realises the No-Self? 1:05:58 - Reincarnation is irrelevent 1:07:21 - The problem with the doctrine of reincarnation 1:10:30 - Is the doctrine of making merit magical thinking? 1:19:36 - Uppaya and useful ignorance 1:20:21 - Society is built on magical thinking 1:23:01 - Renunciation is the inevitable outcome of the 8-fold noble path 1:25:57 - Is the Hinayana self-terminating? 1:26:38 - A historical example of Buddhism destroying a society 1:28:22 - Is Buddhism inviable on a societal level? 1:35:32 - The tension between individual liberation and societal collapse 1:36:43 - Dhammarato reflects on the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation claims 1:38:23 - Is the tulku system a scam? 1:41:45 - Magical beliefs prevent progress 1:45:23 - Ideal society: Benign dictatorship vs democracy 1:47:41 - Leaving the fight 1:49:41 - Dhammarato’s radical position of renunciation in the face of death

The ecosystem of eCommerce is always evolving, and the last year has seen a rapid pivot for retailers. So, what can an eCommerce expert share? Host Melissa Gonzalez sat down with Hatch CEO and Founder Joris Kroese to learn more about what Hatch does and the changing online shopping environment.Kroese has an extensive history in eCommerce, once owning a brand that sold technology products. He noticed that the manufacturers weren’t usually sellers, and consumers weren’t able to find where they could buy a TV or appliance. This “hatched” the idea of Hatch, an eCommerce platform that connects brands and retailers. In looking at the last year, Kroese said, “I was surprised at the agility of retailers and the pace at which they adapted. It happened in months, not years.”The acceleration of online sales in the pandemic was astronomical, and Kroese said, “We are driving consumers to online retailers, and some clients are seeing 20 times for business than the year prior.”He does acknowledge there were and are hurdles to retail in the pandemic. “Coping with the supply for online demand, the supply chain, delivery logics, brick and mortar stores shifting to digital, which requires different skillsets and comes with new competition,” he noted. While eCommerce is climbing, Kroese doesn’t believe in-store experiences are over. In fact, having a local store is a good complement to digital channels.  “Omnichannel solutions provide a competitive advantage. With local stores, you have proximity and the ability to see the product and get advice from a salesperson. That’s not going away,” he commented.Overall, the new retail experience should be seamless from online to offline. Physical stores are also filling the needs of eCommerce, offering BOPIS (buy online pick up in-store), curbside, and last-mile delivery. Kroese believes these trends will continue. “Those retailers that embrace these changes will do well,” he added.Listen to Previous Episodes of Retail Refined Right Here!

He has also actively participated in, prepared for and executed two IPOs, raising over $300M in the public market. All of that expertise makes him the perfect guest for this episode of Retail Refined with host Melissa Gonzalez, which focused on rethinking malls for the post-COVID world, closing the gap between brick-and-mortar experiences and their online counterparts, and why leveraging and repurposing existing real estate is going to be critical for eCommerce success.Fabric helps retailers quickly scale operations, using their proprietary technology and robotic-picking systems to provide profitable, and efficient logistic solutions without sacrificing delivery times.Below, you’ll find a portion of Gonzalez and Hornyak’s conversation. To hear all the insights in this episode, listen now.MG: Everybody's trying to shrink that last mile. What challenges have you seen, and how have you helped retailers fulfill it? When we see companies taking stores that have been closed and turning them into “dark stores” and centers of fulfillment, [what impact does that have]?SH: That's typically the first step. To take existing store and either turn it into a dark store or pickup from an existing store – and that's going to stay around. That's not going to go away. That'll be there. You're going to have picking from storage for fulfillment where there is high velocity, high demand and high density consolidating that, and automating that will absolutely happen now. … Why are they going manual first? Well, it's quick. It's quick, and it's cheap. And they can. It's lower risk. …We're starting to see a transformation of and leveraging of retail footprints to be able to provide the localness for eCommerce fulfillment.Listen to Previous Episodes of Retail Refined Right Here!

How Personalization and Supply Chain Efficiency are Driving Retail Resurgence

Melissa Gonzalez, host of MarketScale’s Retail Refined, knows what’s at the top of everyone in the industry’s mind as 2021 dawns – more personalized experiences and better supply chain efficiency. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, these two trends are paramount. Consumers are still hesitant to shop in person in many cases but, when they do, they’ll likely return to elevated expectations for personalized and tailored experiences. Those experience also transfer to online shopping, where data and analytics can help find ways to cater to individual consumers engaging in eCommerce.More pressing on the backend of retail operations, though, is the need to find ways to ensure the supply chain keeps pace with all of this innovation. To dive further into personalization and optimization of the supply chain, Gonzalez invited Paul Burel, Senior Consultant within Fujitsu America’s Consumer and Commercial Industries Group, onto the show to share his insights.Prior to joining Fujitsu, Burel held several senior management roles in Store Operations and IT at Home Depot. He is also a consulting engineer with extensive experience in retail store design and construction andcomes from a family retail business that owned and operated grocery, hardware and convenience stores.“A lot of conversations we're having as we're relooking at store design are about how we make these environments as agile and modular as possible, so they can flex as needed throughout key times of the year,” Burel said. “It’s a lot to think through, for sure, with all these technology integrations. I think one of the silver linings is all the learnings that we can garner, and I think that there's a much more concerted effort within brands and retailers to understand that data and take actionable steps based on that. I think it also helps the ability to deliver upon personalization and really being able to map out customer journeys and offerings to satisfy what different consumers are looking for.”Listen to Previous Episodes of Retail Refined Right Here!

How Big Data Changed Fulfillment and Inventory in Retail

Retailers learned many lessons in 2020 relating to the “new” in-store experience. This knowledge now shines the light on what’s to come regarding inventory accuracy, flexible fulfillment, and more trends. Sharing thoughts on these subjects and the role of technology is Tim Kane, Retail Solutions Consultant for North America, Zebra Technologies. Zebra supports retailers with devices and solutions for inventory, fulfillment, operations, the customer experience, and analytics.“The biggest lesson learned from 2020 is how quickly retailers could respond. In early March, when the pandemic was becoming a reality, retailers made immediate changes associated with digitizing. One customer advised me they had made 147 operational changes from March to May, and that’s incredible,” Kane said. With the acceleration of adaption and technology growth, analytics becomes more vital for retailers. “There’s so much more data to capture than just POS. There are shelf cameras and robotics that can capture data and feed it to a machine learning engine. It can then send tasks to store managers and associates about inventory gaps,” Kane explained. These new tools are elevating the role of store associates. They can focus on more high-level work, while technology automates simple, repetitive tasks. That’s especially beneficial for grocery stores. Customers can use devices to scan products themselves and pay for a frictionless experience. Associates can use them to pick and process orders. “The technology can also track when the customer is nearing the store for pickup when they arrive, and what spot they’re in; all creating a positive experience at curbside,” Kane explained.Micro-fulfillment for grocery is becoming very sophisticated, learning on technology, as well. “The most expensive parts of online grocery are the labor to pick and the delivery. Now grocery stores are automating this with robotics. They are then partnering with delivery services to reduce costs but meet customers where they are.”Listen to Previous Episodes of Retail Refined Right Here!

I think she described herself as a puddle of feminine energy. She wants to meditate, clean, focus on the self-care inner work, but when it comes to moving her career forward, she feels stuck, and puts off applying to jobs. In the past, Maureen  used to be very into her masculine energy.  She could achieve any career related thing and knock out any to-do list. She wants to know how she can get back into that. Maureen thinks her problem is a masculine energy problem, but I disagreed. I think she has a healthier relationship with her masculine energy than she thinks. In reality, the problem is rooted in her feminine energy. 4:45 – Background information on Feminine and masculine energy 9:20 - Maureen asks how to re-engage her Masculine energy after focusing on her feminine energy for so long 10:55 - Maureen describes how her masculine energy felt in the past 15:59 - What it looks like now for Maureen when she tries to get stuff done 18:30 - Maureen may not be dealing with a masculine energy problem 24:48 - Why Maureen’s goal of getting back into the traditional workforce could be the wrong path for her 34:02 - Maureen’s next steps 38:36 - A recap of the coaching call with Maureen  I hope you enjoyed this episode! Spend just a few minutes scrolling social media or watching the news and you’ll be bombarded with multiple competing ideas, all advertised as truth. But how do you know if something is true or not? What if you don’t need anyone else to tell you what’s true? What if you have, inside yourself, a lie detector you can activate at any given moment? Today on Women’s Empowerment School, Sylvia is walking us through an exercise for accessing truth in times of lies. She explains why we must get out of fear in order to connect with our inner lie detector, describing how to shift from a state of stress and high-alert to one of groundedness and safety. Sylvia goes on to discuss how our access to truth is not in the intellectual mind but in the body, helping us distinguish how it feels when we focus on something that is true versus an obvious lie. Listen in for insight into why people are more vulnerable to manipulation right now and learn how to activate your own access to truth when presented with contradictory theories. We are in a season of growing conflict, dissonance and even hatred among people. And faced with someone we disagree with, it’s easy to get dragged into a sea of negative emotions—where unconditional love feels entirely out of reach. But what if we DO have the power to choose love, regardless of the circumstances? Today on Women’s Empowerment School, Sylvia is sharing the twelfth chapter of her book, 12 Leadership Powers for Successful Women, ‘The Power of Unconditional Love.’ She weighs in on the patriarchal love-falls-from-the-sky paradigm of love, explaining how it takes the power out of our hands and portrays love as a kind of virus we catch in the right moment. Sylvia then invites us to consider a radically different paradigm, reframing love as a conscious, creative act we CHOOSE and challenging us to love the person in front of us regardless of how we think they make us feel. Listen in for insight around the self-image you must cultivate in order to lead from love and learn how to leverage unconditional love to reap results that feel like magic! Topics Covered  What inspired the creation of Sylvia’s book, 12 Leadership Powers for Successful Women The idea that each of us embodies love, peace and freedom at our essence The expectation that we must do what we love to achieve true happiness The love-falls-from-the-sky paradigm that paints love as a virus we catch in the right moment   Sylvia’s invitation to reframe love as a conscious, creative act we CHOOSE How to love the person in front of you independent of how you think they make you feel The self-image that gives us the ability to love and lead from love Why widening the gap between external input and our reactions is a prerequisite to unconditional love How leading with unconditional love reaps results that feel like MAGIC Connect with Sylvia Sylvia’s Art + Coaching Website Becker-Hill Women’s Empowerment School WES on Facebook WES Podcast Show Notes Sylvia on Instagram Sylvia on LinkedIn Subscribe to WES on iTunes Subscribe to WES on Google Play Subscribe to WES on Stitcher Email sylvia@becker-hill.com Resources 12 Leadership Powers for Successful Women by Sylvia Becker-Hill  Previous Episodes of the WES Podcast  Join Sylvia’s Women Rising Community here: www.becker-hill.com/community

Over the years David had multiple Shell Gas stations. Find David’s other episodes  (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=david+justice). Key Talking Points: Jessica Carr and Ron Tinner from Sparks Tire and Auto. Daughter and Father. Ron is also a part-time coach with Repair Shop of Tomorrow David Justice, Repair Shop of Tomorrow    The intentions of the owner and son or daughter need to be known to each other Teaching/training of all aspects of the ‘business’ is a long term job. Give plenty of time for the transfer of knowledge to happenNever assume that a sibling will learn it all through osmosis Knowledge transfer needs to be planned and deliberate If more than one sibling each should know their roles and the parent/family leader must pick a final decision maker in the absence of the dad or mom Parents with family in the business need to pay attention to their desires and input into the business. Succession only happens when you take action. Look to your family and/or team to find a candidate you feel will continue the business. It is difficult for many to talk about succession. A mentor or coach can help you If you start to talk about selling or succession some on the team may think, ‘the end if near’ and consider leaving you. Looking for an internal candidate must be done in confidence. If other family members and only one will succeed with the business, there is a problem with others that may not be in the business, but consider having a right to the business valuation within the parents estate. Owners want to see their business succeed and must pick their successor carefully no matter family or internal candidate. Consider putting money into special accounts for the eventual time when there is cash needed for a buy out especially with a family member to buy into the transaction Ron, Jessica and David speak highly to the ‘Profit First’ strategy by putting money into separate accounts ‘silos’. Find a podcast episode with ‘Profit First’ author Mike Michalowicz here: https://remarkableresults.biz/e421/ (https://remarkableresults.biz/e421/) There are many creative ways to put money aside. Could be part of a compensation package to earn equity. You need advisors to help you. Attorney, accountant, consider the impact on a trust, if you have one. Insurance agents, for key life insurance on each other. Consult your business coach. Business evaluation. Ron had a huge transition when he learned to work on the business than in it (E-Myth). Rick White, President and Lead Coach for 180BIZ, an auto repair shop training and business coaching company. He also owned and managed several successful automotive repair shops. Early in his career, Rick got his arm stuck under a vehicle while working underneath it. He managed to get out safely but it was a wake up call to him and for all of us as well. This is everyone’s concern. There are too many distractions like cell phones, tablets, lackadaisical attitude of it never happening, not focused on job at task, talking to tech next to them and a whole lot more. We need to follow lift maintenance schedules religiously and document every procedure in order to check work properly. Rick White’s Previous Episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22rick+white%22). Key Talking Points: Why does a shop not have a coach?False expectation- seeing other shop owners “making a lot of money” and thinking you can do the same. The national average net profit in industry is 5-7% ($4,000 day average shop made $200 profit) Being the answer man- you have to know it all I can figure it out myself- would take decades to do it, costs too much in profits lost Embarrassment- where you are isn't who you are Coaching condenses decades of learning into days  When you don’t get the help you need for business you end up becoming disillusioned and bitter about things- effects personal life, not as engaged, self medicating  Picking the right coach- the right fit for your business and personality   Failure only happens when you refuse to learn from itWisdom comes from experience and experience comes from mistakes Good result vs bad result- bad results are often seen as “failures” when they should be seen as learning opportunities  Failure as feedback- instead of always “putting out fires” in shop you need to be in “fire prevention” mode. What processes and systems can you put in place as a team so you never experience that “fire” again?   “Wherever focus goes, energy flows” Tony Robinson  Everything business owner wants out of their business and out of life is on other side of the fear holding them back  Coaching is about relationships and communication- purveyors of hope (hope in the future there’s power in the present)  Change starts with you When you have a choice you can do the right thing, the wrong thing or nothing- the worst thing you can do is nothing  Coaching is an investment not expense  Money is easy to replace, cannot replace time with family Embrace what your coach says, internalize it, then implement   Business during the pandemicDepends on owner’s belief systemExample- owner believes no one is buying and everyone is out of work they will take poor actions with poor results in their business which furthers their beliefs even more  Do you see problems or opportunities and potential? Expand your audience- people are consuming online content and videos which is an opportunity for your business Resources: Thanks to Rick White for his contribution to the aftermarket’s premier podcast. Welcome to episode 227 of the Love Live Connection podcast, How to Know If Your Expectations Are Too High I’m really excited about today’s topic.  This question comes up a lot with my new clients who ask me, “Veronica, are my expectations too high?  If they are, just tell me.”  They think by lowering their expectations, that will get them into a relationship.  I think a lot of this comes from the patriarchy in place in our society. It’s a really good example of how the political landscape is personal and shows up in our relationships and in the bedroom. So, I’m going to go through five ways that your expectations may be too high and five ways your expectations are definitely NOT too high. I hope you enjoyed this episode! Find me on Instagram or send me an email with your feedback. I look forward to hearing from you! 6:56 - The first way your expectations might be too high - You believe they should know what you want 9:30 - Reason #2 your expectations may be too high - You aren’t okay with any degree of arguments or fights 12:07 - The third reason your expectations may be too high - Your partner feels like nothing they do can make you happy or they feel they’re on eggshells 14:30 - The fourth reason your expectations might be too high - You possibly have too many dealbreakers 19:42 - The fifth way your expectations may be too high - You believe in fairytale love/unconditional love 24:12 - The first example of when your expectations are not too high - Consistent communication/spending time together 26:13 - The next way your expectations are not too high - Your partner doesn’t take any responsibility for growing the relationship or working through issues, gaslights you and puts it all on you 28:29 - The third way your expectations are not too high - The idea that “Love is supposed to be hard”  31:04 - The fourth example of when your expectations are not too high - You don’t feel excited by the relationship 34:04 - The last way your expectations are not too high - It’s wrong or mean or not nice to have boundaries or say no   After you listen to this episode, here are your next steps: Previous Episodes mentioned in this podcast: Dating as a Feminist and Healing From Sexual Trauma Understand the Difference Between Being Triggered and Treated Poorly with Aila Standing Up for Yourself Without Being a D*** with Amy Smith Check out my free workshop The 5-Step Strategy To Banish Anxiety and Overwhelm in Your Love Life Ready to explore what working with me is like?  Learn more here. First, know that this wasn’t a quick decision. It was a process that has been going on in my mind for at least two years. I have been exploring if we would leave California...why we would leave and what our family values the most. Moving is a total pain in the ass, moving across the country is exciting and terrifying. Moving during a pandemic is exhausting. But we know what we are moving towards with our family and the life we have chosen. If you are considering a move these are the factors that mattered most to us..and how we made the decision to move to middle Tennessee. You can find show notes for this episode at https://transformingmission.org/128This is the seventh and final in a series of reflections on Matthew 28:16-20. This week, we're exploring the big idea that Jesus is with you. Wherever you are, wherever you go, whomever you encounter, Jesus is with you.  Christ’s presence with you does not depend on your actions. But, your attention to God’s presence is transformative.  To consider the idea that Jesus is with you, listen to this episode. If you’ve missed the previous episodes in this series. There are a total of seven. Enjoy them one at a time, daily over the course of a week, or as we’ve shared them over the course of seven weeks.  Let's turn to Matthew's Gospel using the pattern read, reflect, respond, and return to explore the scripture. Read Matthew 28:16-20 Reflect Consider the scripture “I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.” Those early followers of Jesus were reminded that they were not alone in what they were being sent out to do. One of the great aspects of living a holy life is that you are not left alone to live the holy life alone.  Jesus, the Risen Christ, is with us.  “Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age." Knowing that Jesus is with you, you can look for Jesus in the common, ordinary, situations of everyday living and relationships. Knowing that Jesus is with you, you can follow Jesus into your community with courage.  Remember, the Good News in Matthew’s gospel is, “God has sent Jesus to teach us how to live before God.”  At a time when the ground is moving under your feet, Matthew offers a solid place to stand by reminding you that we are not alone and that you can proceed with courage.  Knowing that you are not alone, that the one who sends you is the one who is with you, what would happen if you began to engage in your community by developing relationships with local schools, with persons living in poverty, with health care facilities, with first responders, with social and political leaders?  You might think of it this way, how are you leading people into your community to live lovingly and justly as servants of Jesus by healing the sick, feeding the hungry, caring for the stranger, freeing the oppressed, being and becoming a compassionate, caring presence, and working to develop social structures that are consistent with the gospel? What could happen if all the people with whom you are related were introduced, invited, and initiated into God’s love that they began to practice God’s love, teaching others by the way they are living?    Respond Today, how will you engage your community with God’s love?     Consider making an intentional shift from doing mission in the community to leading a movement of God’s love in the community. What one action will you take to develop a relationship with an agency, a school, or a leader in your community? Who will you call, visit, or contact as a first step? Step out in courage, knowing that you are not alone. What difference does your interaction make in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors?    Return Reflect upon the scripture and your interactions of the day.  What one action did you take to engage someone in your community?  Pray O God, thank you for the courage to step out in faith today. And thank you for preparing the people with whom I had interactions today. I am especially grateful for how my life is being transformed by following Jesus into the community. Help me focus my eyes more upon Jesus, so I may recognize you more often in the people I meet along the way. Amen.    Previous Episodes in this Series 122: Pause with Matthew 28 123: Pause for Empowerment 124: Pause, then Go Make Disciples 125: Pause for All People 126: Pause: Immersed in the Movement of God 127: Pause: Living in Relationship with God and One Another

This is the sixth in a series of reflections on Matthew 28:16-20. This week, we're exploring what it means to live in relationship with God and one another.  Consider the people around you. There are those you know well and those you pass in a grocery aisle or on the street. Some people you know their story, other people you may just be getting to know.  The same is true in our relationship with God. How will your obedience be a part of a nurturing relationship with God and other people? Listen to this devotion and explore it for yourself.  Let's turn to Matthew's Gospel using the pattern read, reflect, respond, and return to explore the scripture. Read: Matthew 28:16-20   Reflect on the phrase "teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you.” Those early Christians were sent to teach others what they had been taught by Jesus. What had they been taught? How to be holy or righteous in their living. For Matthew, at the heart of holy or righteous living was a relationship. The words “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” is what Matthew wants us to know about living in relationship with all the people around us. It is what we learn as Jesus' followers. Being in a relationship with God and with one another is what the movement of God is all about.    Holy living is about right relationships with family, friends, strangers, and enemies.  It includes being proactive in how you treat others.  You act on behalf of others not because they have acted on your behalf but because loving others is who we are as a Jesus follower.  Holy living is about having respect for yourself in such a way that you are a person of your word.  It means that you are integrated in your living, that what you are living on the outside in your relationships grows from the convictions of your inner life.  Holy living is about seeking first the kingdom of God. Being self-aware and keeping all aspects of life in a healthy perspective.   Holy living is about caring for others in such a way that you are caring for Jesus himself.  You are growing to the point that caring for others becomes so natural that you don’t even know that you are caring for Jesus.  You care, not to become holy, but because you are holy. Holy living is about being proactive in forgiveness.  Relationships are so important, holy living is about forgiving as many times as it takes to restore the relationships that are being broken.    The words “to obey,” “observe,” or to “pay attention to” is about doing the things you have been taught to do.  It is easy to talk about holy living, but it is not easy to be holy in your daily living.  You might think of it this way, you live out your purpose as you practice who God created you to be. What would happen if you began to develop relationships through the practice of spiritual disciplines? What would happen if you began to live your life in such a way that people could see Jesus in you? Respond Today, how will you put your faith into practice?    Consider making an intentional shift from trying to be a good Christian to living a life shaped by God’s love. What one action will you take that requires practicing your faith? Be intentional about putting your words into actions. Begin to relate to all people the way God in Jesus has related to you. What difference does your interaction make in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors?  Return Reflect upon the scripture and your interactions of the day.  What one action do you take that required practicing your faith?   Pray O God, thank you for all the people you put into my life today.  And thank you for giving me opportunities to practice my faith by putting into action the things you have taught me. I am especially grateful that you are helping me become more who you created me to be in and through the people you are bringing into my life. Help me focus my eyes more upon Jesus, so I may recognize you more often in the people I meet along the way. She might not have known much about cars when she started, but she sure did know about customers. Ashley started at the front counter, and her father said he could tell that she understood customer service and how to connect with people on a deeper, more emotional level. Fast forward -- Ashley is vice president of the company. Ashley has hired her first office team, and they have outperformed some of her father’s best years in business. Her father and the rest of her family couldn’t be prouder. She has a true passion for helping customers and finding her voice as a woman in a male-dominated industry. She hopes to inspire more women to take the leap and join this amazing ever-growing and changing industry. Michele Winn graduated from Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1994. Here is her resume: She worked for an independent Goodyear service center for 6 years where she did brakes, steering and suspension and under hood maintenance. In 2000 she taught an ‘Intro To Drivability’ class at Linder Technical Services. She also helped recondition fuel injectors, answered hotline calls from member shops and figured out tough drivability problems that were brought into the shop. Michele always enjoyed turning wrenches and went back into a large shop environment in 2009 working for Beck Service Center on the south side of Indianapolis. She has been the only drivability and electrical technician in the shop for the past 4 years. Lauren quickly found that this was the favorite part of her job, and truly why she wanted to work there in the first place. She had never received that level of customer service or felt valued as a customer at any other repair shop and she was excited to provide that experience from the other side of the counter. After the shop manager challenged her to make a sale, when she had absolutely no technical or sales experience, she sold the job and found that she enjoyed writing service just as much. It allowed Lauren to help people, which is what she wanted to do. After nine months, she was informed that the owners were retiring and selling the building, but through the connections that she made, Lauren found a wonderful home at Los Gatos Auto Service in Campbell, California where she currently writes service, full-time. From the beginning of my children’s lives, I’ve cared deeply about being a loving, empathetic, positive parent. I’ve read lots of books about parenting without shame and focusing on the good within my kids–and I feel like I do that well–but as my kids have gotten older, I am starting to recognize more and more that an area I struggle with is setting limits with my kids. I like to think that I’m a consistent parent, that I’m not too much of a pushover...but then sometimes I see the ways that my children behave out in the world, and I cringe, realizing that I have definitely been too permissive, and honestly, that’s not fair to my kids. They need a parent who has insisted upon respectful limits. So is it possible to be both a positive parent who guides my children without shame AND a firm parent who holds them to consistent and important boundaries? Of course it is. But it’s so much easier said than done, and I feel like this is an area that isn’t all that clearly flushed out within the literature on positive parenting. That’s why I am thrilled to have my dear friend back on the podcast today, clinical psychologist, (https://amzn.to/3ctyhSh) In this episode, which is Part 1 of a two-part series, Katie and I discuss how to decide on the limits that you want for your children, based on your unique values, limitations, and hopes: Three Takeaways for Deciding on your Limits 1. Define your Values: What are the non-negotiables for our family to protect our kid's physical and emotional health and teach them to be in relationship with others? 2. Identify your Personal Limitations: How much noise, stress, interaction, time in the car, risk, public scrutiny, etc can I handle if I am going to stay in a mental space that will allow me to parent from the best that’s within me? 3. Write out your Hopes for your Child: What do I believe makes a successful and well-behaved child? Which parts of this do I want to hold firmly through creating a thoughtful boundary for my children, and which parts do I want to let go of after considering their temperaments? >>> For a worksheet to go through these three categories, click here (https://mailchi.mp/04c572e5fa72/drkatiepenry) . <<< Key Quotes from the Episode “Limits are an expression of love." "Just because a behavior is normal does not mean it's acceptable." "Boundaries that are anchored in values are so much easier to enforce.” “When your boundaries reflect your own personal limitations, they can actually protect you from undue stress and help you yell less. "Try to help your kid not trigger you. And you work on your triggers. Let's work on this as a family." “Imagine a narrative about the prototypical, well-behaved child. Go ahead and write it out, as detailed as you can. And then look at it and wonder, ‘Is this actually reasonable?’ Because you will subconsciously attach yourself to those hopes and those expectations.” Show Notes Dr. Katie Penry's website: drkatiepenry.com (drkatiepenry.com) Dr. Katie Penry's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drkatiepenry (https://www.instagram.com/drkatiepenry) Dr. Katie Penry's book: The Parenting Toddler's Workbook: Manage your Child's Mood, Potential, and Well-Being (https://amzn.to/3ctyhSh) FREE worksheet to brainstorm your limits: https://mailchi.mp/04c572e5fa72/drkatiepenry (https://mailchi.mp/04c572e5fa72/drkatiepenry) Many thanks to this episode's sponsor, Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls (https://www.rebelgirls.com/pages/podcast) , an amazing podcast for children!
