At the Farm, Heath is otherwise known as “Kathleen's husband.” He is the guy that floats around on the weekends lugging toolboxes, skill saw, sprinkler fittings, and plumbing implements – fixing this and that and trying to stay out of the boss-lady's way. Heath grew up in the Colorado mountains, living the rural life. He worked with horses from an early age. A big kid for his age, Heath spent the summer between 6th and 7th grade on a logging crew high up in the San Juan Mountains. His job was to section the felled logs into 8 ft lengths, and then run a team of gigantic draft horses to drag the logs out of the deep forest. He nicknamed the drafts Heckle and Jeckle due to their often caustic sense of humor. At age 13, he spent the summer working at a Colorado dude ranch, wrangling horses (and people). He learned how to drink coffee during those 4:30 am mornings. Herding 30 horses out of a 100-acre pasture every morning required caffeine and patience. Heath moved to South Dakota at age 14. With his mom's help, he his first business. He purchased 4 two-year-old colts, broke and trained them, and then sold them. The company was a bust, however, because he lost a quarter of his profits after falling in love and keeping “Good ol' Sackett” (who was a not a so “good” Arabian roan) Sackett was a runner. If you gave him his head, he would bolt, ears back, eyes white and manic. Heath truly had to cowboy up to get him under control. Quickly he devised a plan to only let Sackett “run” when he was headed uphill. It had to be a big hill, though, because if Sackett wasn't blown by the time he reached the top – the downhill white-eyed run was terrifying.Heath left home at 17 and moved to Aspen, Colorado. There he met a photographer while busing tables. The woman asked him to sit for some fashion photos. They weren't very good, but the experience began a new twisting trail in Heath's life. He moved to Los Angeles, did some modeling while also training horses in Malibu for a Hollywood film mogul, and within a few months, he was invited to model in Paris. He stayed in Europe for a year. (Where, incidentally, he was struck by lightning during a solo camping trek up Mont Blanc, but that's another story.)Back in LA, Heath quickly moved from modeling to acting. He worked with top celebrities and directors in the industry with stints in Wyatt Earp, Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman, and eventually as a series regular on The Young And the Restless. After 20 years, he transitioned again, from acting to writing, penning two novels and a memoir, and countless film and television scripts. Finally, he met Kathleen. Except for the western movies he performed in, Heath had been away from his equine roots for most of his time in Hollywood, and he could notbelieve his luck when he found a “horsewoman” in the middle of LA!In 2010,as he watched Kathleen working on her first variations of No Thrush powder and then saw how her colleagues kept begging her to make some more of her “Thrush Stuff,” Heath finally suggested,“This is clearly somethingthat works, and people seem to want it. We should make a big batch and see if it will sell.”That was the beginning. The husband and wife team worked in the garage into the late hours making powder and working out the logistics. There was a lot to learn! Internet sales went crazy right away, and they were up until midnight every night packing boxes. Soon No Thrush was in the local stores and then spreading outward in a ripple effect. Within a year, the product was sold nationally and had jumped the pond into the EU, Japan, AU, NZ, etc.Heath now runs the Four Oaks Products production facility. Just as he does on the weekends at the farm, he wears many hats and carries many toolboxes.Facebook personal -

Show Notes Episode 414: “Admiral, It is the Enterprise!” This week Host Dave Bledsoe boldly goes where he has never gone before! (Meaning a bar in Bayonne New Jersey where he hopes they've never heard of him!) On the show this week we open hailing frequencies and tell you about the time nerds convinced the President to name a space shuttle after a TV show (Dr Quinn Medicine Woman). Along the way we learn about Dave's fantasies. (Thank god we are talking about his CHILDHOOD fantasies not the sewer that they are today!) Then we dive right into the Big Dreams NASA had after going to the Moon! (We were gonna get Moon Bases!) and how reality, along with Dick Nixon, brought them back down to Earth. We then learn a little about the American Space Truck, the Flying Ford F-150! (Could have been worse, could have been a Chevy) Then we talk about how even the modest dreams of the shuttle program had to be dialed back in the face of harsh reality. (Do we mention Reagan? Sadly, we do.) Finally, we tell you how a group of very determined nerds used their powers of persuasion not to get someone to finally sleep with them, but convince Gerald Ford to name a shuttle after an imaginary spaceship. (Meaning their girlfriends would continue to be imaginary.) Our Sponsor this week is the PodTrek Podcast, three middle aged white dudes doing five shows complaining about modern Star Trek being “woke”. We open with NASA unveiling the shuttle and close with the Firm boldly going forward because they can't find reverse. Happy fa la la la holidays everyone! We're officially on the other side of the 2022 Christmas TV movie season, can you believe it?? There was no UpTV this week and I purposefully didn't watch Netflix's The Noel Diary just yet but that didn't stop us from the biggest week yet featuring a full lineup on Hallmark, Lifetime, and GAC Family. Hallmark started strong with My Southern Family Christmas on Thanksgiving night but fell by the wayside with #Xmas and A Royal Corgi Christmas on Friday. The crushed Saturday night with A Tale of Two Christmases and Lacey Chabert's Haul out the Holly and then finished strong on Sunday with A Christmas Cookie Catastrophe and easily winning the coveted 8pm Sunday after thanksgiving slot with A Holiday Spectacular featuring the Rockettes. Hallmark Movies and Mysteries's Time For Him to Come Home For Christmas left me bawling and is my new favorite from that channel. Lifetime stayed solid this week with The 12 Days of Christmas Eve featuring Kelsey Grammer and won Friday with Mario Lopez and Jana Kramer's Steppin into the Holiday. Their Sunday Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman mini reunion with Jane Seymour and Joe Lando was a fantastic Sunday edition but just didn't quiet knock off Hallmark. Baking All the Way on Thursday just wasn't a watch for me. And then GAC Family finally delivered a solid movie on Friday with Christmas at the Drive-In featuring Danica McKellar and Neal Bledsoe. Saturday's I'm Glad it's Christmas with Gladys Knight, Jessica Lowndes, and Paul Greene wasn't a win for me, and Sunday's Candace Cameron Bure's debut A Christmas…Present fell a little flat for me. Listen to all that and more now! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Van, Brian, and Spencer once again fly back in time to the 19th century for some more Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman for this week's Boob Tube Boys installment. This time around, a capricious sprite named Martin wanders into Colorado Springs from the deep woods, pecking his way into the hearts of Dr. Quinn and her family in the process. While Martin just wants to spread his wings in a new town, the typically rabid residents of Colorado Springs want to see him migrate elsewhere for the winter. This episode is a wild ride featuring one of the most memorable characters in BTB history, though no one has been able to figure out what the title means yet
There may have not been any Bube Tube Boys back in 1867, but that doesn't mean there aren't Boob Tube Boys around now. This week, Van has tasked Brian with covering the Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman episode, "The Incident." It turns out the incident is murder, unless the incident is actually the coverup of the murder, and your favorite pod people are on the case. Join us as Van falls in love with a long-faced character named Horace, Spencer deals with the violence of squintin' Jake Slicker, and Brian realizes his given name might not be suitable for adults
The old men are together for the first time since February of 2020 to record an episode in one single location. Or are they? Jim may be in South Carolina looting Patrick's home. There's some healthy discussion about the difference between Waffle House and Huddle House in regards to both digestion and the reproductive process of both chains (spoiler: they're Xenomorphs) as well as The Rolling Grapes, Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, and OK Cupid. We also talked about Radiohead or something. Later, Jim provides us with another net worth challenge, and Christopher forces the others to discern the meat of yet another clickbait Alternative Nation article. Always respect the glass.
On this episode Savage talks one on one with famed director Alan J. Levi on his career producing and directing for such iconic television series as Magnum PI, Columbo, NCIS, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and many many more. Alan also talks about his new film, "Take My Hand", starring his lovely wife Sondra Currie ("The Hangover Parts 1, 2 and 3", "7th Heaven") and Barbara Bain ("Mission Impossible", "My So Called Life"), and what it was like directing Frank Sinatra in Hawaii.

This time, we review the fascistic satire war film Starship Troopers and along the way we wonder if it's right to poach 18-year-olds for your military, is it really a Paul Verhoeven movie if there's no nudity, and how did this movie spawn an entire direct-to-video franchise? Let's dive in… Starship Troopers (1997) Cast and Crew Directed by Paul Verhoeven: As Chris remarks during the episode, this may have been the point of Verhoeven's career where he was fully actualized having directed Robocop (which we've previously covered with special guest Brian McLeod), Basic Instinct, Total Recall and Show Girls. While his career hasn't enjoyed the same popularity in recent years, he became known for hyper stylized violence, subversive yet relevant content and of course, nudity. Written by Edward Neumeier: He had previously collaborated with Verhoeven on Robocop Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico: Van Dien had developed quite a reputation working on television prior to being cast in this film having appeared on shows like Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, Beverly Hills 90210, and Married with Children Denise Richards as Carmen Ibanez: This is considered by many to be Richards' breakthrough role as she starred in Drop Dead Gorgeous, The World is Not Enough and Wild Things after starring in Starship Troopers Dina Meyer as Dizzy Flores: Meyer was also cast following a run on Beverly Hills 90210 as well as a memorable run on FRIENDS as a romantic partner of Joey Neil Patrick Harris as Carl: Harris was slowly working on rebranding himself as a serious actor after he was primarily known as a child star on the show Doogie Howser, M.D. Jake Busey as Ace: The son of legendarily crazy person Gary Busey, Jake has become more a bit actor, but is willing to accept roles with little prestige especially in recent years as he appeared in the third season of Stranger Things and several episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Also Starring: Michael Ironside as Rasczak Patrick Muldoon as Zander Clancy Brown as Zim Dean Norris as Commanding Officer Seth Gilliam as Sugar Earth in the Future While it's not explicitly mentioned when this film takes place, it's set sometime in the 23rd century when interstellar travel is now possible and militaries are more advanced than ever before. The government is also controlled by a group of veterans or military officers having overthrown a prior regime that was run by intellectuals and bureaucrats. This is the briefest of world building we receive in the course of the film which seems odd given Verhoeven's attention to detail in films like Robocop and Total Recall. In this world, citizenship is not guaranteed and can only be obtained through a term of military service, but while citizenship is guaranteed, safety is not. Throughout the first act of the film, we see veterans who have given part of themselves in service of their society. Rico's teacher, Rasczak, is missing his arm but is given a prosthetic when he joins up again. Even the recruiting officer is missing an arm and both legs. While Rico is initially shocked to see this, it doesn't deter him from joining and he's naïve to think that something like that won't happen to him until he arrives at the initial invasion. Naivety is common among the recruits in Rico's class as they all have their reasons for joining including getting money for school, career military aspirations, reproductive rights, political careers, and in Rico's case, a woman. Although prior to Rico enlisting, he's easily led by Rasczak into joining and by letting him think it's his own decision to join and risk his life. These opportunities are not available to individuals who do not enlist and even the simple act of creating a life is prohibited to them unless they join and serve. Subversion Through Satire In interviews after Starship Troopers was released, director Paul Verhoeven has stated numerous times that this film is mean to be viewed as a satir...

[00:01:26][0.4] Lita: [00:01:27] Ummm no, now back to the show. [00:01:28][0.9] Ron: [00:01:29] Right. On today's show we'll be interviewing one of our own PodcastDX host Jean Marie. Jean had a condition called POTs which stand for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. POTs maybe a condition our listeners aren't familiar with. Please allow us to give you some background. Jean this is a condition you acquired when you were injured while on active duty. What did you tell us about it. [00:01:54][25.2] Jean: [00:01:55] Well Ron POTs is a condition that affects your heart rate and blood pressure with change in position from like lying to standing or sitting to standing. But it isn't really a heart disease or a heart disorder rather it's a disorder of the central nervous system that regulates the heart rate, blood pressure and the rest of the parasympathetic nervous system; breathing, digestion those are all part of this same system and could be affected as well. [00:02:19][24.4] Lita: [00:02:20] Thank you for the background info Jean and thank you for being a guest instead of a host today. [00:02:25][4.7] Jean: [00:02:26] Yeah I didn't know I had a choice in the matter. [00:02:27][2.0] Ron: [00:02:30] hmmm hmm I understand it's been 10 years since you were diagnosed with POTs? [00:02:33][2.7] Jean: [00:02:33] That's right. I was injured in 2000 but it took about eight years to sort out all of the resulting conditions from that accident. [00:02:40][6.3] Lita: [00:02:41] Well Jean, you look great. POTs isn't something that people typically see as a disability or a condition there might not be outward signs but being active enough to join us tonight might be a really big thing for somebody with POTs. Can you tell our listeners how POTs affects you personally in your everyday life. [00:03:03][21.9] Jean: [00:03:03] Sure. Every time I change positions like from moving from sitting to standing or lying down just sitting I get a headache but it only lasts for a few seconds. In addition I tend to faint quite a lot. I passed out while drying my hands. I fell into a bathtub and fractured my kneecap and my cribriform plate. I had CSF or some cerebral spinal fluid leaking from my nose and I was on bedrest for about two weeks or a month afterwards. [00:03:32][29.0] Lita: [00:03:34] Well Jean what symptoms first led you to the doctor. [00:03:37][3.0] Jean: [00:03:38] I kept fainting having dizzy spells and the like. [00:03:40][2.5] Ron: [00:03:41] Well how long did it take for you to get a diagnosis. [00:03:42][1.3] Jean: [00:03:44] My symptoms were bothering me for about eight years before they diagnosed me with POTs. [00:03:47][3.5] Ron: [00:03:48] Wow. Can you recall any specific symptoms that really stood out. [00:03:53][4.4] Jean: [00:03:53] Well I actually thought my symptoms were normal for someone with a head injury. And then one day I was waiting for my nephews to finish up their sailing lessons on Lake Michigan when I felt very dizzy and when they got back to shore we all went to the hospital and I was very surprised to see how low my blood pressure was. It was around 50 over 40 and it took hours for it to come back to normal for it which is for me is about 120 over 60 for me. [00:04:19][25.1] Lita: [00:04:19] What tests help diagnose your condition. [00:04:21][2.1] Jean: [00:04:23] The tests for this condition are a bit odd. There's the tilt table test and for that the doctor or technician straps you to a table and then the table literally tilts up until you are in a standing position. And while they're doing this they're monitoring your blood pressure and pulse throughout this test. And then there's a couple other tests that they actually monitor your perspiration based on chemical and electrical stimulation. [00:04:47][24.0] Lita: [00:04:48] Did anything help relieve your symptoms before you were actually diagnosed. Anything that you could help yourself to feel better. [00:04:56][8.1] Jean: [00:04:57] Moving slowly taking time to get up slowly and staying hydrated. And then my doctors also prescribed support stockings and an abdominal binder to help keep my blood pressure up. But I had no control over when I would faint. [00:05:11][14.1] Ron: [00:05:12] Well how bad did it actually get before the doctor diagnosed you. And what was the worst symptom you had to deal with. [00:05:19][6.3] Jean: [00:05:19] Well when I would faint I would often get hurt as I said before I fractured my skull and my kneecap. I also tore all of the tendons and ligaments off of my ankle. And last year this time I bruised my spleen when I fainted into a fire pit. [00:05:33][13.5] Lita: [00:05:35] Did anything help with that symptom at the time. [00:05:37][2.1] Jean: [00:05:38] I was told to limit my activities and they actually prescribed that I use a wheelchair and sug, suggested that I use a wheelchair for transportation. [00:05:46][7.7] Lita: [00:05:48] OK well moving ahead to when you actually were diagnosed. How did you feel when you found out what was actually going on. [00:05:55][7.8] Jean: [00:05:56] I was relieved. They said that medication might help and that I needed to drink more caffeine and increase my salt intake. So coffee and fries with salts. [00:06:05][9.2] Ron: [00:06:06] All right. Now I understand that POTs is a type of dysaoutotomia a dysfunction of the nerves that regulate the body's involuntary body functions such as the heart rate blood pressure and sweating. There are many causes from autoimmune disease to inherited disorders and viruses that damage the nervous system. Also mass cell disorders to spinal injury. And that's just naming a few of them. Did you discover what caused your condition and was there an actual starting point for this disorder. [00:06:40][33.3] Jean: [00:06:41] Yes I suffered a rather serious head neck and shoulder injury and that was when I started having my symptoms and that is what caused me to get POTs. [00:06:51][9.4] Lita: [00:06:52] What types of doctors or specialists did you see before you were actually diagnosed. [00:06:56][4.2] Jean: [00:06:57] I have over the past 18 years I've seen a wide range of medical specialists from almost every discipline. [00:07:03][5.2] Lita: [00:07:04] Okay. Now you're from the Chicago area as we know and we have a good selection of health care providers close by. Did you find what you needed here close to home or did you have to travel looking for expertise. [00:07:16][12.0] Jean: [00:07:17] Well although there are amazing physicians right here in Chicago I did receive a lot of care out-of-state as well from everywhere from Stanford, Walter Reed. All the way to the east coast and in New York. [00:07:32][15.4] Ron: [00:07:34] Was there a time you had to be hospitalized either because of the POTs or because of an injury you occurred after passing out. [00:07:40][6.6] Jean: [00:07:41] Yes I have been to the E.R. and hospitalized and more than one occasion. [00:07:44][3.1] Lita: [00:07:46] And do you have to take a lot of medication. [00:07:47][1.2] Jean: [00:07:48] Well I am more than some people less than others I take medications that actually help keep my blood pressure up and I actually take salt tablets every day. [00:07:57][8.8] Ron: [00:07:58] Has anything else changed since your diagnosis. [00:07:59][1.4] Jean: [00:08:01] Well unlike most people I have to load up on caffeine and salts. And so that's a little bit unusual because most times they tell you to cut those two. But walking is still very important and I just have to be very careful. And then there are certain diet restrictions I drink about one hundred and forty four ounces of water a day which is a bit more than average I think. And I have to you know monitor my blood pressure Maintain a healthy diet and take the time extra time when I'm getting up from either lying or sitting down to standing so that my blood pressure doesn't fall and I don't faint. [00:08:36][35.5] Lita: [00:08:37] OK. Does anything make your life easier. [00:08:40][2.5] Jean: [00:08:40] Well last year I received a recumbent bike from an organization called Ride to Recovery and that's allowed me to get you know the chance to get outside feel the fresh air and have a bit of fun. [00:08:50][9.1] Lita: [00:08:50] Well sure why not. Everybody should. I think they call it recreational therapy don't they Ron. [00:08:55][4.7] Ron: [00:08:55] Yeah I think you're right. What would you like our audience to know about POTs. [00:09:03][2.8] Jean: [00:09:05] I guess that it's good for everyone to keep in mind that you're not always going to see someone's health condition or problem that some problems are as they say like invisible. So don't judge people just on what you see. [00:09:15][10.6] Ron: [00:09:16] All right since you're the expert here what advice might you have for our listeners. [00:09:21][4.7] Jean: [00:09:22] Well I definitely think it's a good idea to keep a list of all your symptoms. And even though it sounds a bit redundant go over the same list with every single doctor you see. [00:09:31][8.5] Ron: [00:09:32] OK Jean thank you so much for sharing your story on today's show.
