When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem, he found that the people had slipped from God's ways to their own ways, forsaking the house of God.  Standing on scripture and history, Nehemiah's reformations restored the sanctity of God's house, service in the temple, submission to the Sabbath and the standards of God. Today's church needs the same reformation to return back to God's ways and stand on His word. Doug Wilson shares his journey from legalistic striving to gospel freedom, revealing how discovering his identity in Christ transformed his understanding of salvation and relationship with God. The conversation explores the damaging effects of a "Jesus plus" mentality and the liberation that comes from resting in Christ's finished work.• Born and raised in Oklahoma with minimal church background• Initially approached religion as a set of doctrines rather than a relationship• Spent a decade as a church elder trying and failing to live up to legal standards• Left church completely for two years after burning out spiritually• Discovered through a new pastor that the gospel offers complete freedom• Found his true identity in Christ rather than in religious performance• Now views the Sabbath as resting in Christ's salvation rather than as a legal requirement• No longer judges others but sees them as people Christ loves• Learned that we can be honest about our anger while still responding in love• Encourages others that "the fight's already been won" through Christ.

Growing In God Podcast Program Number: GIG #262 Web Description: The Sabbath is a special covenant that God made with all mankind. It is a weekly reminder that all things God created are completed and available for us. He rested from His works and invited us to enter His rest. We can do that because He has done it all, and we do not have to keep striving to do it in ourselves. This Sabbath rest is a provision made for us from the beginning, and we appropriate it today.   Show Notes: On the Sabbath we remember that God completed all His creation and rested from His works. This means that whatever we need already exists and is available. All we have to do is appropriate what God has finished creating. We are also told in the book of Hebrews to enter His rest. How do we rest from our works just as God rested from His? If we know that everything is completed, then we do not need to keep trying to accomplish by ourselves what is already done.   We want to enter His rest, and the Scriptures enable us to learn from the mistakes of those who failed to do so. The children of Israel saw the works of God when He delivered them from Egypt. Yet in the difficulty of the wilderness, they tested God because they stopped believing He could do what they already saw Him do. Moses knew what God could do. But instead of speaking to the rock as the Lord commanded, Moses in his anger disobeyed God and struck the rock. He made it about his works instead of the works of God.   As Christians we have experienced God's salvation and seen His deliverance in our lives. But when we face difficulties, what happens to our faith? Do we start to quarrel with Him and test Him? Or even in good times, do we try to work out everything by ourselves instead of believing He has done everything? We need to enter His rest. That means we stop everything we are doing out of ourselves and believe in Him, in who He is, and in what He has done. He has provided for us all things pertaining to life and godliness, and we need to live our lives from that point of faith.   Key Verses:   •       Genesis 1:31—2:4. “God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work.” •       Hebrews 4:3–11. “The one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.” •       Psalm 95:1–11. “They tried Me, though they had seen My work. … They shall not enter into My rest.” •       Exodus 17:2–7. “Why do you test the Lord?” •       Numbers 20:9–12. “Because you have not believed Me … you shall not bring this assembly into the land.” •       2 Peter 1:3. “His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness.”   Quotes:   •       “He is the great Creator, and all things were created by Him. And He finished that work of creation and opened the door for us to enter into that creation in rest because there's nothing for us to work up. We don't create. We simply receive and appropriate.” •       “It's very important that during these days that we're in, and moving forward from here, we don't lose our faith. You've got to be able to go back and remember all that the Lord has done.” •       “Things can get very difficult. But He's provided for us one day a week where we can come and remember all of His provisions, all of His blessings. And we can therefore look at what we're facing today, and what we're going to face tomorrow, and realize, ‘Yes, He is with us, and He is faithful to His promises.'”   Takeaways:   1.    The seventh day, the Sabbath, is a day God sanctified, meaning that He set it apart from the other days of the week. This makes it a significant day that we keep by remembering God rested from all His works. All His creation was completed, and all things in the created world are available to us. 2.    We are called to enter His rest where we cease from our own works. That is, we stop trying to do everything ourselves because we know that He has done it, and we become one with what He has done. 3.    All things are available. All things are ours. And all things are possible for us to appropriate right now in this day. Therefore, we should not let go of our faith in God's completed provision, either because we are facing difficulties or because we are magnifying our own works.

My tired minivan has a digital readout with initials DTE: Distance ’Til Empy. It gives me a precise mileage countdown. Most newer cars these days have this feature. It’s a handy one: knowing exactly how far I can go before I need fill up is important data to avoid being stranded! Did you know the Ten Commandments offer something of an ancient analogue to the DTE feature? It’s called Sabbath. In Exodus 20, God tells us that after six days, we’re out of metaphorical gas: “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work” (vv. 8-10). We might be tempted to ignore this commandment. After all, the prohibitions against lying, stealing, murder, adultery, coveting, and idolatry (vv. 1-17) seem pretty obvious. But resting for a day each week? Is it really that important? We might think we can “cheat” here. But the gift Sabbath offers is an invitation to rest. To cease laboring. To remember that God provides for us, not our own constant labor. Distance ‘til empty? Six days. And on the seventh, God graciously invites us to rest, recharge, and to relinquish the notion that it’s all up to us.

In Matthew 12, the Pharisees criticized Jesus' disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath. Jesus replied with Hosea 6:6: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” In that moment, He challenged the belief that God values perfect behavior more than people. God's heart has always been for mercy, not burdensome religion. Many walk away from faith feeling crushed by impossible standards, but Jesus reveals a different picture - God's priority is relationship, not rule-keeping. When we grasp this, it changes how we see Him and how we show Him to others.

New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope August 11, 2025   Scripture – Luke 6:1-36   Prayer:  Heavenly Father, We come to you today praising your holy name.  You are a good God!  Thank you for caring for us, for walking alongside us, but  most of all thank you for Jesus, who died our death, so that we can walk hand in hand with you.  Help us live like resurrection people in the way of Jesus.  We don't want to get stuck in our religion.  We want to live transformed lives in Jesus.  How we need you, Lord.  We are stubborn people.  Amen.   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church Bible reading plan.  We are currently doing a deep dive into the Gospels and Acts.  Today, we begin Luke 6.  Our reading today contains a lot of substance and I'll do my best to do it justice.   We begin with Jesus' disciples plucking off heads of grain on the Sabbath and then Jesus healing on the Sabbath.  Both of these things infuriate the Pharisees who have made the Sabbath incredibly complex for the people.  They instituted an extremely complicated system of Sabbath laws of their own that was oppressive and legalistic. There were strict laws regarding how to observe the Sabbath, which included 39 categories of forbidden activities. This went far beyond what was required in the Torah.  For example, they weren't allowed to swat a fly (it was considered hunting), nor were they allowed to look in a mirror because they might be tempted to primp.  Basically, these religious leaders, with their own lists of rules, had made themselves lords of the Sabbath, thus making themselves lords over the people.    Jesus was pushing back against this.  He speaks about how David and his men ate consecrated bread from the Temple when they were hungry, even though it was off-limits.  There are times when rules make sense and there are times when they don't.  People are always more important than rules.  The original intent of the Sabbath was to give humans rest, not to create a heavy burden.  The Pharisees had lost sight of this.    Jesus then states that he is Lord of the Sabbath.  This really gets the Pharisees worked up.  By saying this, he is declaring that he has authority over the Sabbath.  Jesus can overrule the Pharisees' rules and regulations because he is the one who created the Sabbath in the first place.  He has the power to correctly interpret the meaning of the Sabbath and the rules pertaining to it.  Let's be clear, Jesus is making a bold statement about who he is.    Do you get distracted by our own rules and traditions?  And do those rules and traditions get in the way of doing the work of Jesus?    The next portion of today's reading has Jesus choosing the twelve disciples.  Notice how he spends all night in prayer.  The fact that God the Son spends all night in prayer with God the Father is something to which we should pay attention.  If Jesus needed time away to pray to God, how much more do we who are made in God's image but do not share His essence?   The last section of today's reading includes the blessings and woes and love for enemies.  This teaching block is known as Jesus' Sermon on the Plain.  While it has similar elements to Matthew's Sermon on the Mount, it also is very different.  Matthew is clearly writing to Jews, while Luke's audience is mainly Gentiles.  It's for that reason that Luke doesn't worry about including references to Old Testament equivalents.   Luke is making a point about how God is in the business of turning human realities upside down.  The poor are blessed by God and the rich have already had their blessing.  The hungry will be satisfied but those who are full now will hunger later.  These beatitudes and woes are examples of a pattern we see in Luke --- God is at work in Jesus, turning worldly values upside down and challenging perceptions.  The mighty are cast down and the lowly are lifted up.   Thus, when Jesus then says to love your enemies, please know this audience would be shocked.  In the Gentile world, people did not love enemies.  It would have been a sign of weakness.  And yet, Jesus is turning things upside down, establishing a new standard of compassion that crosses religious, political, and cultural lines.    Notice this wasn't a suggestion.  It wasn't something that Jesus says to do every now and then or when it's convenient.  It's a command.  Interestingly, we find it hard to love good friends and family members.  It can be tough to love ourselves.  But Jesus is showing us all a different way.  Mercy for the those who are unmerciful, forgiveness for the unforgiveable, love for the unlovable – this is the way that God has chosen to transform people.  I recently read that we are the delivery system for God's healing power.    Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Church Life                         “Law and Gospel, Pt. 1” (Acts 15:1-5)The Controversy Over Legalism (vv. 1-2)Ro. 4:2-3 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”Gal. 2:3-4, 11-14 3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4 Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.[a] 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”Col. 2:16,18, 20, 21-22 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath...18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions...  20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— 21 “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” 22 (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? The Controversy Over Liberty (vv. 3-5)Ro. 2:1-3, Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 12; For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.  Ro. 3:9-12,18,20,23  9 What then? Are we Jews[a] any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11  no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good..... 18   “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”... 20 For by works of the law no human being[c] will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.....23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Gal. 5:3-4 3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.Gal. 5:13-15  13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

DateAugust 10, 2025SynopsisIn this sermon, we wrestle with that universal ache of unfinished business—from summer bucket lists to life's deeper longings. Drawing from personal experience and the ancient wisdom of Hebrews 11, we discover something liberating: faith isn't about checking off every box, but about trusting God in the midst of our incompleteness. Through the story of Abraham and Sarah, we learn that the divine often shows up not in our achievements, but in life's ordinary, unpolished moments—transforming our "undone" into holy ground where grace and humanity meet. Parsha "Vaetchanan" (for "And I pleaded," Deuteronomy 3:23 - 7:11) is arguably THE portion that contains some of the most important "statutes and commandments" in the Bible. Not only "the Ten," but also the one known often simply as "The Shema," for the first word, and the fact that Yahushua called it the Greatest Commandment of all, 'Hear, O Isreal...YHVH Elohenu, YHVH Echad." And you shall YHVH with "all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might." The Erev Shabbat reading includes that, and more: https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/SSM-8-8-25-Vaetchanan-teaching-podcast-xxx.mp3 During the Sabbath Day midrash, Mark Call of Shabbat Shalom Mesa fellowship suggests that there are several elements in the 'theme' of this parsha that are not only central to our understanding, but also must serve as a basis for some of the most important questions - and the tests that will answer them! - that explain what has gone wrong with a nation, and a world, that has not only forgotten Him - but apparently HATES Him. And they are fundamental to what we must 'come out of,' and thus Who we serve. This portion is, at least in part, about idolatry, and certainly obedience to His "statues, judgments, and commandments." And He says THREE TIMES, in this parsha alone, that He is the 'Jealous God,' literally, "El Kana." There is an important connection in that theme. And Mark suggest that He has told us EXACTLY what we need to know in order to "rightly divide the Word," and discern the difference between the fake and the Real. Vaetchanan: "A Jealous El Kana - don't Add To, or Subtract From" https://hebrewnationonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/WT-CooH-8-9-25-Vaetchanan-El-Kana-NO-Adding-to-or-Subtracting-Frm-podcast-xxxx.mp3 The combined two-part reading and Sabbath midrash:

Jesus Followers Have a Personal Relationship with the Creator of the Universe So Pray, Listen, and Be Patient for God's Call MESSAGE SUMMARY: No interaction with the Holy Spirit is too small for you or for God, and no Spiritual outcomes are too big for you or for God. Jesus illustrates, in the “Parable of the Mustard Seed", that big things come from small beginnings. The selection, by Jesus, of His initial twelve Apostles, led to the growth of Christianity from twelve followers to more than two billion Christians. So, when God gives you a vision or He puts on your heart to start a ministry or to visit the home bound; and you think the Spirit's is so small or inconsequential, just remember small beginnings lead to significant outcomes through the Lord. In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus commissions and promises His support to His Apostles and to us; therefore, how can any call, from the Holy Spirit, be too inconsequential or unsupported for us to embrace: “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'” Pray, listen, and be patient. After all, you have a personal relationship with God, the Creator of the Universe!   TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen.    Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
