On this weeks program Chris catches up with Karen Hovenga to talk about local Yarra issues, including what the new council maybe planning for narrowing protected bikes lanes in Elizabeth Street, whatever the future holds for intersection treatments at Coppin Street in Richmond and direct quote from petition linked below: "continue to implement Yarra's Transport Action Plan 2024-2034 including the New Deal for Schools, New Deal for Cycling, New Deal for Walking and other specified programs to meet the ambitious targets in Yarra's Transport Strategy 2022-32" Local news includes call-outs for assistance from Bite Sized Rides and Bike Rave Melbourne.Karen talks about how several generations of her family easily use the Elizabeth Street protected lanes, their connection to City of Melbourne's Albert Street protected lanes that creates a vital east-west route, being able to ride plenty of short trips to local destinations but decision-makers being unable to vote on equitable transport solutions for anything other than cars. We comment upon how successive generations build upon road safety improvements, in reference to Janet McCalman's award-winning classic ‘Struggletown, Public and Private Life in Richmond 1900-1965' which included horrifying road fatalities statistics of the post war era, where thirty people died on Richmond roads in April 1949.Coming up at the end of the month is Critical Mass Yarra: Friday 31 January 2025, meet 5.30pm, Friday 31 January 2025, State Library, Swanston Street, naarm, Melbourne. Ride, scoot and skate through our traditional home grounds of Fitzroy, Collingwood & Richmond. Many thanks to Sam Wallman for adapting his Freedom Machine design. Like it? Welcome to another iteration of the Monday Breakfast show, broadcasted from 3CR on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.  The episode begins with two speeches from the Free Palestine rally on the 23rd of June: First up is Hijrah Ahmad of Anak Bangsa Merdeka "Children of Free Nations" Collective on the need for decolonisation, and the precedent set by Western powers in allowing Israel to commit its genocide of the Palestinian people. Hijrah spoke from the infamous truck used as a stage for all Free Palestine rallies in Naarm — this week it was parked at an intersection on Swanston Street along the rally route. Organisers were unable to park it at the State Library due to being blocked by police and other authorities. Following that we hear from Prue Stevenson, a Disability Activist, Artist and Change Agent on the steps of Vic Parliament. They spoke of intersectionality, friendship as resistance, and why the genocide in Palestine is a disability issue. After those speeches, we listen to a two-part segment from the Making Contact show from the 11th of June about US encampment and divestment from Israel. US students called for divestment in 70s and 80s from South African apartheid and it was successful. During the segment, the hosts discussed what the endowments are, how they function, how they are invested as well as looking at Yale's endowment model. The Making Contact show airs from 9 - 9:30AM on Tuesday mornings, or alternatively can be listened to online here. This Thursday the 27th of June Black Spark Cultural Centre will host a conversation between Marisa Holmes and Iain McIntyre about the Occupy Wall Street movement. LP como Fly on the wall (1985), Who Made Who (1986) o Blow Up Your Video (1988) reiteraban los sonidos de pasadas entregas, hecho mal visto por un sector de la crítica. Más tarde, ese mismo año, editaron el sencillo It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll), que se convirtió en su himno. En otoño de 1977, publicaron Let There Be Rock. Este disco resucitó temas como «You Shook Me All Night Long» y «Ride On». It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)». Acknowledgement of country We hear Doin Time's Marisa Sposaro speak with Tabitha Lean last week on International Womens' Day  - a day generally not inclusive of Indigenous women. Tabitha spells out the dangers of carceral responses to harm and what criminalising coercive control could mean for Indigenous women experiencing family violence.  Doin Time airs Monday from 4-5pm on 3CR.  Scott Jordan, Tarkine campaigner joins us on the show to speak about the blockade at Venture Minerals' Riley Creek mine site. Yesterday activists blocked the mine site in an effort to prevent works on the controversial and environment destroying project. You can find out more on Facebook and at the Bob Brown Foundation. NO COMMENT is an investigation by Bridget Chappell into the science of phase cancellation — the phenomenon when audio waves work against each other eliminating inverse frequencies — and the theory of ungovernable space. Chappell imagines an anti-carceral speculative future of sound technologies, and tactical defence to ‘phase cancel the cops’ in material, political and psychic terms.  The exhibition is located at Blindside level 7, Room 14 Nicholas Building, 37 Swanston Street, Naarm/Melbourne.  Dr Ruth de Souza, Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at RMIT University, joins us to talk about recent research on older migrant Australians' experiences of isolation during COVID-19. Ruth is a nurse, academic and community engaged researcher in gender, race, health and digital technologies. She is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow role at The Centre for Digital Transformation of Health at The University of Melbourne and has her own consulting practice. Tilde Joy, from 3CR's Stick Together show, comes on to chat about the special 3CR Binary Busting Broadcast, which airs this Sunday the 21st of March from 12-7PM. SongsIzy - FranticBarkaa - 22clan

At 8.00am on Tuesday the 20th of January 1842, over 5,000 people, a quarter of Victoria‟s white population, gathered at the outskirts of Melbourne crowding round the gallows erected on a small rise east of Swanston Street and north of La Trobe Street. The crowd, in a carnival mood, had come to see the public execution of Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner. Early in October 1841, Tunnerminnerwait, Maulboyheenner, Pyterruner, Truganini and Planobeena – 5 of 16 Tasmanian Aborigines who had been brought to Melbourne by Robinson in 1839 to „civilise‟ the Victorian „blacks‟, stole two guns and some ammunition from a settlers hut at Bass River. Over the next seven weeks, they robbed many stations in Dandenong and Mornington, wounding four white men and killing two sealers „Yankee‟ and William Cook. All five were captured by a party of police, settlers, soldiers and black trackers on the 20th of November 1841. Jesus wept, the saying goes, and there he was, on his crucifix, laid out on the unceremonious bench, cast rigid into a plaster block, laid to waste on the Swanston Street spine.Forsaken by Anna Sublet To see a crucifix, abandoned at a tram stop, spoke to me of false hopes, salvation, loss and delusion. Who knows when or if they will be saved? And who, if anyone, will be their saviour? I watched a couple wrestle with their mess at that tram stop, testing the gristle and tendons of their connection. They were bound together, yet I could sense her straining at the edges. Her tattoo of a square within a square spoke to me of their enclosure, and the sense of inevitability about her journey felt like a heavy weight. And so, the crucifix lay abandoned. And we are forsaken. Anna Sublet is a freelance writer.  Her personal essays have been published in The Guardian. Today is our National Day.  It has been for a very long time and it will continue to be for a very long time ahead. It has been endorsed by multiple governments and generations.  I’ve heard the old debate again, that it isn’t our national day and perhaps Anzac Day should be instead and that argument belongs to people with different barrows to push than this day and it’s significance.Anzac Day is an enormously important day, laden with much emotion and meaning and as such it doesn’t need to saddled with the added responsibility of the national day. Anzac Day is a day to look back, but Waitangi is a day to look forward as our original peoples and our newest arrivals get together and celebrate and pledge unity and progressAnd Waitangi Day is a good day and always has been. I was in Australia this year for Australia Day. There, three Melbourne Councils chose not to celebrate the day.  Some call it Invasion Day because it only commemorates the arrival of European settlers.  Our Day commemorates when Maori and the settlers chose to work together to forge a nation which is far more positive.  That said, I watched an Australia Day parade down Swanston Street in Melbourne which crackled with positivity and I lost count of all the different ethnic groups who marched in the culture’s clothes under a banner of one country. My Waitangi Days have been uniformly excellent.  I’ve spent it with family, or at festivals and once at the Treaty Grounds. I’ve seen no nastiness only positivity. So February 6 is the day that we chose to forge a nation in 1840.  Sure there are people on both sides that have problems with its implementation.  But fundamentally it is the soundest and best day to have as a national dayJacinda Ardern is spending 5 days in the North.  Today Dr Aroha Harris has written this.  “One hundred and seventy-seven years after the signing of Te Tiriti, I wish that a Prime Minister – any Prime Minister – taking the time to pause among Māori and other New Zealanders, in Māori territories, on Waitangi Day or any other day, wasn’t a thing, wasn’t a cause for opinion or comment or media attention.”It’s hard not to agree. The argy-bargy that is credited to Waitangi Day through the years came from one place.  Te Tii Marae. That marae had a special privilege granted to it purely down to its geographical location as the closest marae to the treaty grounds. That marae misused that privilege.  Not by protesting or bringing up concerns.  It was the mud-slinging, the sex toy chucking, the name calling and the jostling that did their chips. When Bill English refused to go North all he did was discredit the day.  Either he should have sucked it up and stood up to the ratbags or he should have just crossed Te Tii off the agenda.  That’s what Jacinda Ardern has done and well done too.  I’m amazed it took so long to figure out a logical answer.
