Nearly a century ago, thousands of Minneapolis workers went on strike in the middle of the Great Depression. It turned violent and police shot dozens of strikers, killing two. Members of a Teamsters local were fighting for union recognition, better wages and limits on their working hours. The strike ultimately helped turn Minneapolis into what was known as a union town. Now, author John Hanson has written a new book about the strike, called “Fight & Win: Minneapolis Teamsters Strike, 1934." He joined MPR News host Nina Moini to talk about his personal connection to the story.

On this day, 27 September 1973, the United Farm Workers in California won their second strike in a jurisdictional dispute with the Teamsters union, when yet again the Teamsters were forced to concede the UFW's jurisdiction in organising farm workers. Amazon's exploitative business model is a hellscape for delivery drivers. The brutal delivery routes are dictated by the corporation and all health, safety and training responsibilities are shirked off. We speak with one of the leaders of the Amazon Teamsters Union on the working conditions and the challenges faced when trying to unionize. With Lee Harvey Oswald  assassinated in the  basement of City Hall, the grand trial of the century evaporated in a single flash of gunfire, leaving a paralyzed nation to wonder whether Jack Ruby's bullet was an act of spontaneous, patriotic grief or a calculated underworld silencer's strike. In this revealing twenty-first installment, we look past the smoking gun to explore who Jack Ruby really was, starting with a fierce internal struggle inside the Warren Commission itself. In the summer of 1964, commission attorneys Leon Hubert and Bert Griffin drafted an urgent memorandum demanding a systematic audit of Ruby's long-distance telephone records. However, General Counsel J. Lee Rankin vetoed the request as "too burdensome," leaving the crucial paper trail unexamined for fifteen years until congressional investigators at the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) finally ran the audit and exposed a dense, highly active syndicate network.We dissect the sheer physical and chronological reality of Jack's telephone communication network, analyzing the five separate business and home lines he had access to across Dallas. Throughout the spring and summer of 1963, Ruby's long-distance habits were remarkably mundane, averaging a quiet one-call-per-day pattern. But in the autumn of 1963, his lines suddenly lit up, jumping to seventy-five calls in October and exploding to a staggering ninety-six to one hundred fifteen long-distance calls in the first three weeks of November alone. While Ruby and the Warren Commission claimed this unprecedented spike was purely driven by his obsessive labor dispute with the American Guild of Variety Artists (AGVA) over amateur nights run by the Weinstein brothers, we test this alibi against the actual billing logs and reveal a devastating reality: exactly ten calls—less than ten percent of his entire November calling volume—actually touched the union dispute.We map the true, chilling recipients of the other ninety percent of Jack's long-distance calls, exposing a high-stakes trail leading straight to the mob. We detail his twelve-minute outbound call on October 26th to Chicago underworld bondsman and Teamster-mob fixer Irwin S. Winer, exposing the glaring contradictions between Winer's sworn testimony and his private admissions of their long-term friendship. We trace his October 30th call to the unlisted private office line of New Orleans narcotics smuggler and Carlos Marcello lieutenant Nafio Pecora, which acted as a vital relay to regular contact Harold Tannenbaum. Most importantly, we reconstruct the high-pressure Teamster enforcer loop of early November, where Ruby reaches out to Hoffa's brutal enforcer Barney Baker, accepts a seventeen-minute collect call back from Baker and then makes rapid-fire contact with Miami Teamsters official Dusty Miller,  after which he dials Baker back in Chicago for a highly suspicious fourteen-minute call that Baker later tried to completely erase from the record.Finally, we reconcile these dangerous mob connections with the mundane clutter of Jack's daily routine. We analyze how ninety percent of his calling minutes were spent on family check-ins with his brothers Earl and Hyman, daily short check-ins with his closest partner Ralph Paul, side-hustle queries regarding plastic "twist boards," and booking talent to keep the Carousel Club afloat. We explore how this heavy routine clutter perfectly mimics the behavior of a low-level syndicate asset, whose daily life is filled with routine details that selectively mask rare, high-stakes operational contacts during times of major crisis. We leave it to you, the jury, to decide whether Jack Ruby was simply a frantic, drowning club owner caught in daily trivia, or a connected underworld asset whose lines connected to some of the most dangerous figures in mid-century America.

Kirk HustonTake a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I get to know Kirk Huston. Kirk is the Transportation Coordinator for some of the best television shows and films of the past 3 decades. In this episode, we chat about how someone gets into this business. Then Kirk shares stories of his path to where he is now. Starting off as a Transportation Captain and moving his way through the ranks; Kirk is now co-owner of his very own Hollywood "Transpo" company. He is kind enough to share stories from the sets of all of these projects. He even tells an amazing story about acquiring & storing "Steve the Bus" for the movie "Captain Fantastic". He also shares some of the behind-the-scenes stuff about Harry Bosch's car on the series, and some of the modifications necessary to get some of the on-film shots, and what happened to the car after the show ended. He also explains the process of wrecking a vehicle on screen and what that entails. He even tells some hilarious stories about vehicle mishaps on smaller indie films, and how the different departments on a production work together to get the job done!

In this gripping nineteenth installment of our Jack Ruby miniseries, we take a seat at the table during one of the most mysterious and heavily obscured meetings of the assassination weekend: Jack Ruby's Saturday night dinner on November 23, 1963, at the glittering, mob-financed Dallas Cabana Motor Hotel. Ostensibly a playground for mid-century celebrities, the Cabana was built using millions from Jimmy Hoffa's Teamsters pension fund and was managed by close associates of organized crime. Though the Warren Commission initially brushed past this critical evening as a simple, fleeting telephone call, congressional investigators later exposed the sworn testimony of Chicago sporting goods manager Lawrence Meyers. Meyers confessed under oath that Jack Ruby was actually his personal guest for a long, intense dinner at the hotel restaurant, where the nightclub owner paced and seethed, not with national grief, but with a bitter, commercial fury that his competitors, the Weinstein brothers, kept their clubs wide open and packed to the doors while his own lay dark.But the mystery of the Cabana runs far deeper than a disgruntled nightclub owner's complaints. We peel back the layers of Lawrence Meyers' background, revealing that he was not just a sporting goods salesman, but a direct link to Ruby's gambling idol, Lewis McWillie, who had once purchased free plane tickets to Havana for both men in 1959. We trace the chilling presence of other Cabana guests that weekend, most notably Eugene Hale Brading—a high-level mafia courier on California parole with ties to Sam Giancana and Johnny Roselli—who checked into Room 132 and was arrested on the third floor of the nearby Dal-Tex building minutes after the shots were fired in Dealey Plaza. The California Teamsters filed suit in Alameda County Superior Court, arguing that the DMV improperly fast-tracked driverless truck testing regulations through an expedited process reserved for minor updates. Despite the legal challenge, the permit queue continues to move forward with Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI already holding drivered testing permits. Meanwhile, two powerful trucking industry groups are sounding the alarm over a recent appellate court decision they say could fundamentally upend the entire carrier liability model. The American Trucking Associations and the Truckload Carriers of America filed a joint amicus brief requesting a full en banc hearing to reconsider a Fifth Circuit ruling that found Penske Logistics liable for a fatal crash involving a double-brokered driver the company knew nothing about. The associations warn that if the precedent stands, the entire trucking industry may have been violating federal leasing regulations for decades. Finally, we cover a long-awaited federal transparency rule for freight brokers that has cleared a critical Washington checkpoint. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration sent its broker transparency rulemaking to the White House on August twenty-seventh, marking the first concrete movement since the comment period closed in March twenty twenty-five. The rule would require brokers to maintain transaction records electronically and provide copies to carriers or shippers within forty-eight hours of a request. An ICE agent charged with felony assault in Minnesota walked out of a Texas jail Thursday after Gov. Greg Abbott let a 90-day holding period expire without signing an extradition warrant. Christian Castro is accused of shooting Julio Sosa-Celis of Venezuela through the closed door of his Minneapolis home, then falsely claiming Sosa-Celis attacked him. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty had asked Abbott to extradite Castro to Minnesota after his arrest in Texas in May. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison sued after Abbott did not sign an extradition order.Bells tolled across the Twin Cities Thursday morning to mark one year since the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis. The bells rang at 8:26 a.m. in tribute to Fletcher Merkel and Harper Moyski, the children who died in the shooting. The Annunciation community says it is focused on remembrance and is asking people to place two candles or lights in their windows in memory of Harper and Fletcher.Minnesota's Secretary of State's Office says it is too late to start a recount of the Republican governor's primary and complete it before ballots need to be prepared for the general election. A filing with the state Supreme Court seeks dismissal of Mike Lindell's bid for a hand recount. Lindell failed to formally request and pay for a recount by a Monday deadline. He lost the GOP primary to Lisa Demuth by 45,000 votes.The Minnesota State Fair opened Thursday morning, with crowds already filling the streets. Some fairgoers lined up as early as 24 hours before the gates opened for a chance to be first inside. Visitors are enjoying a warm, sunny day at the fair, with long lines already forming for donuts, coffee and crop art.The union representing Chisago County workers who have been on strike for nearly four months says it has reached a tentative contract agreement. Teamsters Local 320 says the three-year deal is slated for a ratification vote Friday. The union says the agreement addresses two main sticking points, including a wage increase of more than 20 percent over three years and health insurance through the Teamsters. About 125 union members have been on strike since May 1.

Rebuilding The Nation's Cowherd Cowherd numbers along with cattle supplies are the lowest that they have ever been.  However, producers are slowly rebuilding their herds paying close attention to genetics, economics, efficiency, and potential salvage value of cows. Cattle Industry News Tyson Closes Two Plants, Plans on a Third Tyson Foods is restructuring its beef business, announcing plans to close two facilities and look for a buyer for a third. The company will shut down its beef plant in Joslin, Illinois, and its case-ready facility in Eagle Mountain, Utah. Tyson also plans to sell its beef facility in Pasco, Washington. Tyson says it will concentrate its beef operations around three main plants in Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas. The company says production from the closed facilities will be shifted to other plants, and Tyson plans to eventually add a second shift in Amarillo as cattle supplies become available. Tyson says the move is a response to the historically tight U.S. cattle supply. Recent USDA inventory numbers show heifer retention remains limited, suggesting the cattle herd isn't rebuilding quickly. The closures are another sign of the pressure facing beef processors as fewer cattle are available and margins remain tight. Tyson says it will help affected employees find jobs at other company facilities, but has not said how many workers will be impacted. The company previously closed its Lexington, Nebraska, beef plant in January and reduced Amarillo from two shifts to one. Meanwhile, Cargill and JBS have also closed or repurposed beef facilities as the nation's cattle inventory remains historically tight. The deal ends a three-month dispute that kept the plant shut down. Cargill says the facility will restart in phases, with workers returning on different schedules. Employees will first go through training and prepare equipment and production areas. The Teamsters say the full return-to-work process is expected to take about 30 days. Cargill locked out workers May 20th after union members rejected an earlier contract offer. The two sides spent months negotiating wages, benefits and other issues before reaching the new agreement. Cargill says cattle processing will resume once employees are trained, cattle supplies are available and the plant is ready. The Fort Morgan plant is a major beef processing facility, and its restart comes as the industry continues to deal with historically tight cattle supplies. On August 8, 1959, Jack Ruby boarded a plane to Havana, embarking on what he would spend the rest of his life claiming was a simple, eight-day vacation to visit his close friend, syndicate gambler Lewis McWillie. But official Cuban immigration cards, flight manifests, bank records, and the memories of eye-witnesses at the famous Tropicana casino paint a far more complex and troubling picture. Jack wasn't just on vacation; he was traveling back and forth to the island, even making a mysterious, unexplained one-day round trip to Miami. Decades later, congressional investigators would look at this erratic, secret itinerary and draw a chilling inference: that the "Dallas strip king" was serving, at a very minimum, as a courier for international gambling interests desperately trying to move their cash and assets out of the reach of Fidel Castro's newly installed revolutionary government.We also dig into the official paper trail of Jack's underworld associations and his bizarre relationship with federal law enforcement. Long before his fateful moment in the Dallas police basement, the FBI's Dallas office recognized his proximity to the criminal element and attempted to cultivate him as a potential criminal informant. Though Special Agent Charles Flynn ultimately closed the file after nine meetings because Jack was far more interested in trying to get his competitor strip clubs in trouble than providing actual mob intelligence, the files prove a deeper truth: Jack Ruby was small-time, but he was far from isolated. He had direct and indirect lines to some of the most powerful syndicate bosses in the country, including Santo Trafficante and associates of New Orleans boss Carlos Marcello.Furthermore, we expose the massive gaps in the Warren Commission's original 1964 investigation, which chose to ignore key witnesses, phone logs, and travel records that did not fit their comfortable "lone wolf" narrative. We analyze his frantic flurry of long-distance calls in the weeks leading up to the assassination, connecting him to Teamster officials, mob bondsmen, and New Orleans associates. We also look at the terrifying jailhouse conversation recalled by carousel comedian Wally Weston, where a shaken, imprisoned Ruby whispered that the authorities were finally going to "find out about Cuba... the guns... and everything."Finally, we examine the shocking moment on the night of November 22, 1963, in a crowded hallway at Dallas Police Headquarters. As District Attorney Henry Wade held an impromptu midnight press conference, a voice from the crowd corrected Wade's mistake about Lee Harvey Oswald's political affiliations, shouting out the exact name of the "Fair Play for Cuba Committee." The voice belonged to Jack Ruby. Why did a Dallas strip club owner know the nuances of revolutionary Cuban politics better than the district attorney? Join us as we dismantle the comfortable historical portrait of Ruby as a harmless, unconnected hanger-on who simply snapped, and look instead at a man deeply enmeshed in a highly dangerous shadow world.

It probes the oddities of Ruby's alibi—including why he was counting cash for strip club ads at the Dallas Morning News desk with a clear view of Dealey Plaza at the exact moment of the motorcade shooting—his highly debated presence at Parkland Hospital that afternoon, and his bizarre ability to infiltrate the midnight police press conference to correct the District Attorney on Oswald's political affiliations. Most striking of all is the razor-thin four-minute gap between Ruby's Western Union receipt at 11:17 AM and the fatal basement shot at 11:21 AM, prompting listeners to evaluate whether he was simply a grieving citizen acting on impulse or part of a coordinated security failure.The episode also sets the stage for a deep dive into the dark institutional and underworld networks that defined Ruby's existence. It previews the upcoming investigations into his sudden spike in late-1963 phone calls to high-level mob and Teamster figures, his mysterious 1959 trips to Havana, and his hidden history as a potential FBI informant. A federal appeals court ruled that President Donald Trump cannot continue construction of the proposed White House ballroom without congressional approval, ordering a halt to the project and setting up a likely Supreme Court battle. The California Teamsters union has filed a lawsuit against several state agencies, including the California DMV, seeking to block new regulations that allow the testing and future deployment of autonomous heavy-duty trucks on California roads. The union argues the rules were improperly adopted and could threaten hundreds of thousands of trucking jobs. Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Democratic Senate primary, and his own party's establishment spent roughly $83 per vote trying to stop him. Haley Stevens had the governor, Jim Clyburn, AIPAC money, and most of the state's Democratic leadership behind her. She lost anyway. In 2003, the Teamsters celebrated their 100th anniversary and discovered they had almost no institutional record of their own history. Previous administrations had discarded materials that should have been preserved. That realization launched a 20-year effort that has now produced teamsterhistory.org — more than 27 unfiltered, unedited oral history interviews with the people who lived through one of the most turbulent and consequential periods in American labor history, from 1975 to 1999. On today's episode of America's Work Force Union Podcast — the first episode of Labor 132, presented by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association National Labor Office — Teamsters veterans Bret Caldwell and Brian Rainville discuss the launch of teamsterhistory.org, the history of the Teamsters Archives at George Washington University and an interview project that captured participants from across the full political spectrum, from TDU founder Ken Paff to General President James P. Hoffa, all in their own unedited words. General President O'Brien's decision to let the unflattering material stay in, Rainville said, is what made the whole thing possible.
