Planetwalker screenshot On today's show: In 1971, John Francis, known the world over as ‘Planetwalker,' witnessed an oil tanker collision in the San Francisco Bay. The sight of oiled birds on the shoreline caused him to give up motorized transport and rely solely on his own two feet. Months after that he took a vow of silence convinced that listening rather than adding fuel to any fire was the way ahead. Dr. John Francis from the documentary “Planetwalker: The Inner Magic of Dr. John Francis” The documentary PLANETWALKER: The Inner Magic of Dr. John Francis focuses on the period of John's life from the oil spill through his meandering 20-year journey across the States where he resumes speaking to work on oil spill legislation with the US Coast Guard. During this time, it seemed like the whole world, every creed and color, saw John pass by and interacted with him if only fleetingly. By tracking some of these people down, the film explores the weblike and sometimes deeply personal consequences of John's decades of pilgrimage. About the filmmakers: Dominic Gill is a former biologist turned filmmaker. He began his filmmaking career by selling his house, buying a bicycle, and riding 20,000 miles from Alaska to Argentina.  His film on the subject, TAKE A SEAT, was released in 2011 on ITV4 to critical acclaim.  It was distributed to over 45 countries, winning the Special Jury Prize at Banff Film Festival. Nadia Gill has been creating content in the outdoor space since 2011. Formerly an attorney, she decided to pursue a career in filmmaking after meeting her directing partner Dominic Gill. Together they formed Encompass Films and produced two seasons of a travel adventure series titled “Take A Seat: Sharing a Ride Across America”.  It was distributed by NBCUniversal. Over the next few years under her direction, Encompass Films built a branded clientele including Red Bull, Timbuk2, Black Diamond Equipment, and more. Perry is an Adjunct Professor and Director of Executive Education at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design--the d.school--at Stanford University. Prior to his role at the d.school, Perry was CEO of Timbuk2 and COO of Patagonia. He's also an avid surfer. Perry posits that innovation is not an event, a workshop, a sprint, or a hackathon, but rather the result of mastering ideaflow. Put simply, ideas / time = ideaflow. When applied, ideaflow is an effective approach to problem-solving that reduces effort, minimizes risk, and magnifies results. To illustrate this concept, Perry shares personal stories of when he has (and hasn't) applied ideaflow to gnarly business problems, and how he, Jeremy, and the d.school team promulgate this approach to their students, startups, and large corporations.  "Once you fully understand what ideas are, where they come from, and how to separate the winners from the losers, you can finally put that lightning rod down and start making lightning." What routines and methods do you use to innovate? And how can you design for more creativity and experience idea flow? In this episode, Louka speaks with Perry Klebahn and Jeremy Utley who lead Stanford University's d.school Executive Education. We cover innovation, learning, leadership and the concept of Ideaflow: an experience built on discrete repeatable practices that can increase your creativity and a forthcoming book. Take a listen to hear how you can become more creative in the way you contribute at work, in school and in society and check out https://www.ideaflow.design.On our guests: When it comes to startups, corporations and executive leadership, Perry's seen just about everything. He's a seasoned entrepreneur, product designer, chief executive and co-founding member of the d.school faculty with over 20 years of experience. He also loves math, motorcycles and making things. Perry brought two out of three of those interests to bear when he created a new category of sportswear by way of a high-performance shoe — a snowshoe — for his product design master's thesis. He went on to found the Atlas Snowshoe Company, which remains the leader in snowshoe design and technology. Perry sold Atlas and became the head of Sales and Marketing for the clothing brand, Patagonia in 2000. He then went on to be named the CEO of the iconic bag company, Timbuk2 in 2007. Both opportunities gave him extensive experience in brand turn-around, design and innovation. Despite his years running startups and corporations, Perry's true calling is teaching. He leverages the breadth and depth of his experience as he pushes his students to bring rigor and precision to their fast-paced design work. His students often tell him that, while they were intimidated by him during the course, they're grateful for the pressure he placed on them to exceed their own expectations. Perry is a founding teaching team member for the d.school's startup gauntlet class, Launchpad, the innovation leadership course, d.leadership and the week-long executive education intensive, Bootcamp. He is also on the teaching teams for the personal development course, Designer in Society and the organizational change course, d.org. In every class, Perry guides his students to look back in order to discover what to do next and works from the unshakeable belief that it's always possible to see a problem differently.Perry is an Adjunct Professor and Director of Executive Education at the d.school. He holds a B.A. in Physics from Wesleyan University (1988) and a Master's degree in Product Design from Stanford University (1991).Jeremy never expected to be a designer. On his 10th birthday, his father asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. Jeremy replied,”I want to be one of the people who carry boxes with handles.” A little over a decade later, Jeremy became a briefcase-carrying management consultant focusing on economic development. Then, in 2008, d.school derailed him completely. His time as a student and a fellow at the d.school showed him that “how” he worked was more important than “what” he did. Today, Jeremy is dedicated to helping others along the same path to becoming a designer. He helps people change their deeply-engrained behaviors and discover, as he did, that it is possible for them to make a difference. He does this through teaching as well as through growing alongside his students to become better in his own life and work every day.Jeremy is the Director of Executive Education at the d.school. He is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin's Red McComb's School of Business (2005) and the Stanford University Graduate School of Business (2009).

We're chatting with Andrew Chau, the co-founder and CEO of Boba Guys, a national boba brand that's bridging cultures through deliciously disarming beverages. If you live in the Bay Area, LA, or NYC, you've probably passed by -- or through -- a Boba Guys store. Today, Boba Guys has 18 immaculately designed retail locations, but as with most start-up stories, it has humble beginnings. Co-founder and CEO Andrew Chau grew up in ‘80s New Jersey, in a working-class neighborhood that was home to primarily Jewish and Italian families, where his parents ran a Chinese restaurant. Outside of food, the only Asian representation he saw were in Bruce Lee action films, courtesy of VHS tapes he'd rent from a video shop in a neighboring town. This changed when he moved to California, attended UC Berkeley, and got his start in marketing at retail and CPG companies, spanning Target, Walmart, Timbuk2, and Clorox. While running a boba brand had never been a part of the 5 year plan, when Andrew met his future co-founder Bin at Timbuk2, the two got to brainstorming what they could create together while sipping boba drinks, and soon, the boba concept became inescapable. Andrew kept his corporate job for the first 3 years of Boba Guys, before cutting the cord and going all in on growing the company. That said, if you ask Andrew what business he's in, it doesn't stop at boba. Boba Guys is ultimately about bridging cultures. Close to 20,000 brands use Shogun to build beautiful and totally customized pages for the ecommerce sites. Brands like K-Swiss, Timbuk2, MVMT Watches, Chubbies Shorts, Leesa Mattress, and so many more.  A lot of those same brands also leverage the speed and flexibility of a headless front-end. Recently Shogun launched Shogun Frontend, which is a Progressive Web App (PWA) tool that allows stores to build a LIGHTNING FAST headless front end that loads in sub-second speeds.  In this episode we dive into exactly what a PWA is, why stores should consider it, and how it works within a headless architecture.  If you're a scaling ecommerce brand, this is an episode you won't want to miss!    Some of the topics we discuss are: How a Progressive Web App works as an ultra fast headless front end. Why do so many stores see 70% of traffic on mobile, but 70% of sales on desktop, and how might this be a massive opportunity for you.  What is the difference between Shogun Page Builder and Shogun Front-End What does Finbarr think of Headless commerce? It's pros, cons, and who should consider it. How can a PWA front-end help a brand. What brands should consider a headless PWA front end. Which should not. In this episode, Laleh Hancock introduces Chrissy Dorn, founder of Chrissy Dorn – Sustainable Brand Development. With over 30 years of brand development through sales, product management and marketing, Chrissy learned from powerful industry mavericks and crazy rebels and from true visionaries with clear values and a strong sustainable & ethical "why". “Be the difference that creates change! What if there were way more possibilities you ever imagined if you asked for them?” About our Guest: Chrissy began her career in 1983 in renowned 5-star hotels, spending eight years working abroad in France and the UK. She speaks several languages (German, English, French, Italian, Spanish). Her many foreign travels enabled her to quickly understand different cultures and the diverse clients she works with. In 1987, Chrissy followed her love for nature and rock-climbing and switched to the outdoor & sports industry, contributing to major expansion for reputable outdoor brands, amongst which Patagonia and Timberland. She later ran her own wholesale agency across the UK and the Benelux, with brands like Wild Roses and Lowa. In her role as EU sales manager for Mountain Hardwear, Chrissy made a particularly strong contribution to the brand's presence across Europe. In the early 2000s, when Puma became the world's most desirable sports lifestyle brand, as one of three International Product Line Managers, Chrissy increased turnover in her categories “Women's Athletic Apparel” and “Men's & Women's Performance Apparel” in double-digit growth rates up to a yearly volume of 60 Million Euro. In 2007, Chrissy founded her independent PR and business development agency. Her portfolio includes innovative leaders and industry mavericks with a strong ethical and sustainable ethos, amongst which Nikwax, Páramo, Rab, Lowe Alpine, Timbuk2, Hydro Flask and Ticket to the Moon. In 2019/20, Chrissy has had the great honor to work with world class guitarist duo Café del Mundo. Her forever existing love for music expanded Chrissy's view on all the many things that the word “sustainability" actually includes: one of which is the enduring joy that authentic music brings to our hearts and the way it connects people sustainably. The commitment to the conservation of our planet, and the question what every single one of us can contribute, has inspired Chrissy to focus her consultancy work on sustainable brand development. Voices of the Community

“giving a voice to the manufacturing sector, to the City, our funders, everyone, hopefully the public, and then really helping manufacturers know and talk to each other and often partner with each other, which we’re always super happy to see.” - Pierre Coeurdeuil, SF MadeIn this episode, our featured voice is Pierre Coeurdeuil, Director of Advising & Education, at SFMade. San Francisco had forgotten its history of manufacturing with all of the latest booms such as the first dot com boom, then the bio tech boom and now tech boom 2.0. In 2009 Mark Dwight founder of Timbuk2 and Rickshaw Bags came together with Kate Sofis and Janet Lees to launch the nonprofit SFMade. Over the last ten years, SFMade has focused on enabling manufacturing to return to its place in our community and economy and to bring the jobs and products back into our lives.

In which Craig discusses his healing process from a recent accident and gives a preview of the upcoming season of the EduPunx podcast.Hey folks!Just wanted to share a big time update on my condition - including the original post I share about the incident - which can be found by clicking here!Since the incident, I have done a quite a bit of healing - I’ve always been moved into a carbon fiber cast, which is much more enjoyable than the plaster cast I had for three weeks! A big positive if that I do not need surgery! So just a few more weeks and hopefully they will remove the cast and I can start PT.The bigger issue, as I discuss in the episode, if the brain stuff - the mental trauma that this incident has put me through. I think of the incident everyday. I think of it nonstop when we drive, when I drive, and whenever I see a cyclist. I think of all the what-ifs and what could have happened. It’s terrible, but this is my life now. Many folks have asked about legal stuff - and yes, I have two lawyers managing everything for me. My medical bills have even already been covered, which is fantastic!During the episode, I even take a moment to thank the great folks at Timbuk2 for replacing my backpack that was damaged in my recent accident. they worked with Katy to get it to me and were super supportive in knowing their product quite literally saved a customer’s life. they EVEN gave Katy a new pack for being such a supportive partner!I’ll be a Timbuk2 supporter for life because I owe them mine. can’t wait to crack this open once I have full use of both hands! make sure you visit their page and timbuk2.com for some sick deals during the holidays!!Lastly, wear a helmet. Life comes at you fast. Thanks for all your support! We will be back soon!MUSIC NOTES:- This week we shared the song, “Laughing (while you’re smiling)” from the new World’s Greatest Dad album, “Get Well Soon,” which came out in May!- You can get a vinyl copy of the album through Deep Rest Records! - World’s Great Dad release one of my favorite albums this year, which is why I wanted to give it some time on the podcast because I haven’t had the chance to do so yet. “Better Off Dead'“ is hands down one of my favorite songs of the year. This new school emo act is certainly taking off - so get into them NOW!- Also, all of the band’s music is already available FOR DOWNLOAD on their bandcamp site, so you have no reason to not download this album right now!

“You have to find people who like you but aren’t like you.” This is a mistake many brands make. They look for customers just like them — with their specific interests and characteristics — instead of people who like your brand and what it stands for. Melanie Spring is a speaker, facilitator, and brand strategist at Branded Confidence.  We discussed community, culture, and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast presented by Twenty20. About Melanie Spring When you ask a brand strategist how she defines her brand and she says “Approachable Badass”, you know you’ve found someone who can help you define your own brand. Melanie Spring was put here to get you outside of your box and firmly in your purpose – professionally and personally. Melanie runs Branded Confidence as an international speaker and facilitator – bringing her charisma and confidence to humans worldwide. She’s so dedicated to her purpose that she once drove 7,000 miles in 3 weeks to find out why great brands work. Episode Highlights Wait — 7,000 miles in 3 weeks? I had to ask Melanie about this first. “Five and a half years ago I was frustrated with my life so I took a road trip to learn about brands.” And being a brand practitioner herself, she gave it a name and branded it! “The Live Your Brand Tour” led Melanie from DC to California and back again, visiting a variety of brands from Timbuk2 and Chobani (check out our podcast episode featuring Chobani) to a jewelry store in San Luis Obispo. She documented her travels and the brand stories she uncovered in Entrepreneur magazine. Knowing your humans. Many of her stories focused on brands building community and culture. But what if you don’t know your humans? “Most haven’t asked. If you just ask them they’ll tell you everything.” Grandma’s still not sure … When being an “approachable badass” is part of you’re bound to raise some eyebrows. And sometimes they are your grandmother’s eyebrows! Melanie joked that her grandma said, “She’s still not okay with the ‘ass word.’ The ‘f-word’ is off limits because then mom can’t share it with her church friends! But brands need a bit of an edge.” Melanie specifically uses the word ‘badass’ to help screen potential clients. “If you can’t handle the word ‘ass’ you won’t like working with me!” What brand has made Melanie smile recently? “I just moved from DC to Denver and I love REI.” Melanie then shared their recent #OptOutside campaign. “If you can get an everyday human like me to giggle, I’m all over that kind of stuff.” To learn more, go to brandedconfidence.com and kickasshumansclub.com. The Freelance Remuda: Navigating the Equine Media Frontier

For journalism and photography, there are a lot of choices when it comes to equipment. Kate and I have found a couple of items that are really essential to doing our jobs well. We wanted to take a minute and talk about them and explain how they help us. This post contains some affiliate links.  Essentials – The Gathering Interviews Process 1.     Recorder a. Brand vs Function – Kate's Must Have Items i. Features to look for: Plug in to computer via USB ii. Speed up or slow down the recording 2.     Audio File Storage / Backup a.     Abigail opts for storage in iTunes & uses Backblaze and DropBox.  i.     DropBox is good to send files to editors, when talking about images. b.    Kate stores them on the computer and on Google Drive. c.     Eternal hard drives! 3.     Additional mics for listening and recording: a.     Abigail uses an Olympus Telephone Pick-Up Mic for recording with a digital recorder on her cell phone. b.    Kate uses her phone's Bluetooth to record while driving, if necessary, or uses the phone in speakerphone mode.   Essentials – The Photo Process 1.     Shooting a.     Abigail & Kate both shoot RAW instead of only JPG to allow for added editing options. (For more on the difference between JPG and RAW: HERE) b.    Multiple camera cards i.     Some cameras have both an SD and CF card option now and will record images on both. Having a back-up is ALWAYS the best option! 2.     Cameras a.     Abigail shoots with 2 Canon bodies: i.     1D – top quality, low light action; older model but still great  ii.     5D Mark iii – great for all but action; super beautiful images b.    Kate shoots with 2 Canon bodies:  i.     7D – bought to use for photos and the video function ii.     5D Mark iii – portraits mainly c.     Having two camera bodies allows for faster change-out of images 3.     Lens a.     Kate:  i.     Owns: 10-20mm, f; 24-70mm, 2.8; 70-200mm, 2.8; carries a spare Sigma 35-300mm for riding out on horseback.   ii.     The 24-70mm is most versatile. iii.     Prefers the 70-200mm on the 7D for action shots. b.    Abigail: i.     Owns the following: 50 mm, 1.4 lens; 70-200mm, 2.8 zoom lens; 300mm, 2.8 lens; 16-35mm, 2.8 wide angle. ii.     Loves her 70-200mm, 2.8; Allows for flexibility with action shots.  iii.     She has a 300mm, 2.8f fixed lens.  The look of the photo is elevated; big & bulky  iv.     For people portraiture – not horses- she prefers the 50mm, 1.4f. **     For horses, Abigail says you need at least a 100mm for portraits to minimize distortion. 4.     Flash vs Reflector a.     Kate prefers a reflector, though she has external flash. She loves the warmth of the reflector. She has a zebra and white, similar to THIS. b.    Abigail has a hot shoe, external flash and the gadgets but discusses the length of time needed to set them up. Abigail also prefers a reflector. 5.     Carry Pack a.     Kate has a photo back pack from Timbuk2.  i.     Cameras, computer slot that can be used for reflector. Pockets for spare recorder, batteries & notepad. ** UPDATE: Kate now has a ThinkTank, the Airport Advantage Carry On Roller (YAY!) b.    Abigail carries two Kelly Moore bags. Both are leather, and one is purple.  i.     Kelly Moore Hobo: One camera body and two lens (not the 300m, it has its own suitcase).  ii.     Kelly Moore Libby: Larger, fits two bodies plus a computer and notebook, and a reflector could go in the computer spot. **Abigail just got a ThinkTank bag--copying Kate! Going for a test drive this week.  6.     Saving Images a.     Kate culls and renames using Photo Mechanic. i.     Download program from the internet. One price to purchase. Has cull, sort, categorize, rename, resize, etc. functions.  ii.     She processes in Lightroom or Photoshop. (Find Adobe products HERE) iii.     Always back up – Kate backs up to Google Drive and an external drive. iv.     She sends images via a download link to her private Google Drive. b.    Abigail also uses Photo Mechanic.  i.     She previously pulled images up in Preview, but it was time consuming. ii.     She edits in Lightroom or does detailed touches in Photoshop.  iii.     Abigail backs up to her external drive & Backblaze. iv.     She sends images through DropBox or an FTP program. Essentials – The Writing Process 1. Transcribing a. Abigail uses Dragon Dictate. i. She listens to her interview and says out loud the recorded audio, then Dragon Dictate transcribes what she says. Ideal for profiles without “horsey terms.” b. Kate transcribes in the morning. She listens to her interview and types the interview with notes. Quick Notes: o   Tools of the Trade include magazines! Know what is going on in the industry, review writing styles and find unique ideas – they don't have to be horse related. Get inspiration from fashion magazines, find new photo poses, and more. o   F8 is a “pause” button on listening to a recording o   Save interviews and images in at least 2 locations. o   Always back up ASAP when you gather photos or interview files o   Double check gear so you don't leave a reflector! o   Though your gear could all fit in a backpack, watch the weight on your back! o   Use your eyes to find that perfect photo. o   Writers can pick up on nuances during an interview and dig further into a topic. o   Tools don't necessarily mean spending money on gear. o   Abigail reminds listeners to be curious and look for that perfect light. View Abigail's photography and writing at abigailboatwright.com. Kate's work is available at katebradleycreative.com.

Mike is a legendary leader in the outdoor active lifestyle markets. In this podcast, he talks about what it was like for him to leave a multi-decade career with leadership roles at Sierra Designs, Mountain Hardwear, and Timbuk2 to start his own business, Outdoor Pursuits Consulting. This move was very intentional; meaning, he didn't just hang out a shingle to bridge himself from one post to the next within the safety (and confines) of corporate. He took this next step specifically to bring his passions back into 20-20 focus, to cross-train his experience in new markets and to spend more time outdoors in Northern California's beaches and mountains.   Ready to be inspired? Listen to Mike Wallenfels today on The Intrepid Entrepreneur podcast. And if you like this episode, share it with a friend who needs inspiration and give it a thumbs-up rating in iTunes!
