More VolatilityMarket volatility stayed elevated last week as interest rates made a move higher, a government shutdown loomed, and a major infrastructure deal hangs in the balance. Yet, the market is still less than 5% down from its all-time highs. Since we spent 220 plus days straight less than 5% from the highs, (S&P 500) it is natural that the first bout of volatility catches some of us off guard and causes us to make irrational decisions. Let's make sure that if this much volatility gets us feeling nervous, we gut-check our portfolios.Investing in MegatrendsMy guest today is Luke Hallard. He is the founder of Telescope Investing and the host of the Telescope Investing Podcast. He has a clear framework for investing in megatrends - trends that are shaping our future. John Elmore is the Senior Director of Pastoral Care and re:generation at Watermark Community Church's Dallas campus. Through re:gen, he journeys with people trying to move forward from the pain of their past into new life and peace through Jesus Christ! As a recovering alcoholic now fifteen years sober, John knows firsthand the wreckage that comes with living a life disconnected from God and isolated from His people. But much more than that, he now knows Jesus' promise of a new, full, abundant, cruciform life. It is better than we ever dreamed life could be and now it's his life purpose to "point people to the Healer, Redeemer, Creator and Deliverer.” He says, “I'm just one beggar telling another where to get the Bread." (John 6:35). Earlier in 2021, John released the book, Freedom Starts Today: Overcoming Struggles and Addictions One Day at a Time (Baker). He says, “I decided to write the book I needed when I was zero days sober.” But this is not a book you read, it's a book you do; it's a ten-minute-a-day for 90 days path to healing and freedom from struggles or addiction by the power of the Holy Spirit alongside another believer. John is happily married to his wife and best friend, Laura. Together they have three kids (boy, girl, boy) and have been blown away by how God is using their little ones to teach us about the depth of love the Father has for us and how to daily die to self. Did you know we are past 'peak stuff' and are now using less resources while still having increasing prosperity? 'More From Less' by Andrew McAfee is essentially a book about how technology is changing the world. It's an optimistic outlook of human progress as the data shows we are growing GDP while declining in the amount of resources required to produce products. Andrew believes this is primarily due to the 4 Horsemen of The Optimist: technology & capitalism supported by good governance and public awareness. There are many counterintuitive findings and graphs showing how dematerialisation is resulting in less resource use.I summarised the book as follows. "I was constantly delighted by Andrew's findings even though I was already aware of most. The book is realistically optimistic and makes you want to play in the game of life. He does highlight where things can go wrong with capitalism and constant innovation so it is not all rosy, there is still work to be done. I would definitely recommend to read this in conjunction with 'The Infinite Game' by Simon Sinek as I think these books compliment each other quite nicely."As always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Timeline:(0:00) - Synopsis(1:24) - Dematerialisation: Regressing from peak stuff(5:32) - Counterintuitive Findings & Nuanced Reasonings(10:39) - Personal Observations(14:33) - Summary(16:14) - Pragmatic Takeaway: Decrease meat consumption a tad moreConnect with Mere Mortals:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meremortalspodcast/

This week's guest is Jonathan Goodman, a world leader in helping fit pros do better, have more, and go online - and the founder of @theptdc The Personal Trainer Development CenterA few years into his Personal Training Career, Jonathan Goodman injured himself and faced the reality that he would be off work for 2 whole weeks, unable to get himself to the gym to train his clients, and also unable to collect his paycheque. It was at this point in his career when he started to imagine how he could package up his extensive knowledge and turn it into an info-based product. And it should be noted that this was almost a decade ago, when online courses and certifications were certainly NOT the norm. What came next was a business beyond his wildest imagination. In today's episode, Jonathan shares candidly what it took to build The Personal Trainer Development Center, which has now certified over 35,000 trainers around the globe.Sure, from the outside, it may look like Jonathan has always had a carefully calculated plan to revolutionize the personal training industry, but there was a messy middle when he was simply putting one foot in front of the other, trying to find out how he could solve his community's pain points.Jonathan is intelligent beyond belief, calculated in his approach, and visionary in the way he sees the future of his company. This was a wonderful conversation.Tune in to hear…Why 137 phone calls was the secret to figuring out his business plan,How he launched his first info product using a beta test group,Why data has driven so much of his companies growth,Where the personal training industry is headed,How artificial intelligence will play a massive role in all of our industries in the next 5 or so years,What his team looks like today,& MORE Connect with Jonathan & The Personal Trainer Development CenterWebsiteJonathan on InstagramPersonal Trainer Development Center on Instagram p.s.
