I just don't know how music works. I can't read music. I don't even know a single scale. And that's how I like it. - Jack Savoretti If you're a music fan (and aren't we all?!) you're gonna love this episode with the fabulous singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti where we discover the ins-n-outs of the; double-double animal-style burger, why the pesto in Portofino is the best along with the Savoretti secret recipe, how to make a Bob Dylan song your own, and where to get the best potato and onion dish you never knew you needed at 10am in the morning.  War Child is Jack's social cause, he says the fact that children are caught up in conflicts is something we should all be ashamed of.  Children in war bear a heavy burden of stress that doesn't cease to exist when they reach safety. To address this unseen crisis, War Child is developing a system of care with children and youth at the very centre. Have you ever felt disconnected from poetry, like it's a secret language only a few can understand? In this episode, we're breaking down those barriers and diving into the powerful and deeply relatable poem "War Child." Forget the jargon and philosophical nonsense – we're exploring the raw human emotions and profound questions this poem raises about war, innocence, and our capacity for empathy. Join us as we unpack the poem line by line, not as literary critics, but as fellow humans trying to make sense of a complex world. We'll look at the devastating loss of innocence experienced by a child in a war-torn landscape, the soldier's internal conflict and the weight of his choices, and the surprising moments of beauty and resilience that can emerge even in the darkest of times. This episode isn't about providing answers; it's about sparking your own thoughts and reflections. We'll pose thought-provoking questions inspired by the poem, such as: What does it truly mean to lose your innocence? How do we hold onto our humanity when faced with suffering? Where can we find hope amidst despair? And what is our responsibility towards the most vulnerable among us? Whether you're a lifelong poetry lover or someone who's always felt intimidated by it, this episode will show you how poetry can be a powerful tool for understanding ourselves and the world around us. We'll connect the themes of "War Child" to our everyday lives, exploring how the poem's insights into dehumanization, empathy, and the search for meaning resonate with our own experiences, even far removed from the battlefield. Tune in to discover the surprising power of poetry to connect us, to challenge us, and to remind us of the enduring strength of the human spirit. This episode will leave you with a new appreciation for the art of poetry and a deeper understanding of the complexities of our shared human experience.

Over our last couple of episodes, we've told the inspiring story of decades of positive transformation the nation of Rwanda has sustained since the catastrophic 1994 genocide against the Tutsis. We learned that Rwanda's peacemakers have for decades nurtured a culture of reconciliation and resilience, cultivating communities where citizens flourish.  Deep healing and renewal like that can come only after conflict ends — it can't happen in the midst of war. In order for children, families, and elders to have a real chance to recover from trauma in body and soul, violence has to cease. But the reality is today, hundreds of millions of people live in the midst of ongoing conflicts, and their mental and physical health are undermined by the indiscriminate brutality of wars that may not end anytime soon.  Our guest today, Dr. Mark Jordans, is a professor of global mental health at the University of Amsterdam and King's College London, and Director of Research and Development at War Child, which, for thirty years, has worked to care for children affected by wars. He is not waiting for peace, but instead, is committed to doing everything he can to help children caught in the middle of violence cope with the crises they face.  Read the transcript of this episode Learn more about War Child's work Subscribe to Stories of Impact wherever you listen to podcasts Find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube Share your comments, questions and suggestions at info@storiesofimpact.org Supported by Templeton World Charity Foundation

A young, upstart FBI agent infiltrates a tight-knit group of surfers who rob banks so they can afford a nomadic lifestyle of spiritual enlightenment. This is the actual plot of acclaimed filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 action thriller, “Point Break.” Is it ludicrous? Yes. Is it absurd? Certainly. However, this muscular entertainment became a highly quotable cult classic and the reasons are justifiable. Jason Zollan returns - with two meatball sandwiches - and joins Dennis to defend why this film hangs ten on everyone's board. Back off Warchild, seriously. Hosted on Acast. He explains that psychological safety is a culture of rewarded vulnerability, where individuals feel safe to speak up and share without fear. Clark emphasises the role of leaders in creating psychological safety and the need for genuine emotional labour in coaching relationships.   Psychological safety is a culture of rewarded vulnerability where individuals feel safe to speak up and share without fear. Leaders have a responsibility to create psychological safety in their teams and organisations. She highlights the need for children to have a safe environment where they can thrive, play, and interact with others. War Child focuses on providing evidence-based interventions to help children recover from trauma, such as art therapy, sports interventions, and music. We talk about the power of music in making people feel better and reconnecting them to their ancestral stories. She also discusses the challenges of ensuring psychological safety for both staff members in the UK and local staff on the ground in conflict zones.   You can donate to War Child here: www.warchild.org.uk Here is the story of the walks that began with Claire and Helen and a handful of others.   Check out Claire's latest walking movement - Coaches Walking   If you like this episode, subscribe or follow The Coaching Inn on your podcast platform to hear new episodes as they drop.   Coming Up:  Saturday:  Open Table: Coaching and Higher Education   Key Words psychological safety, children, war zones, trauma, evidence-based interventions, art therapy, sports interventions, music, ancestral stories, staff safety
