It doesn't take a genius to realise that the COVID-19 pandemic changed the relationship many white-collar employees have with work. And that's particularly true when it comes to remote work; which some of them now see as a non-negotiable. And a lot of other employees have made it clear they don't want to return to full-time office life. Nevertheless, many CEOs were keen to get their staff back into the office once the pandemic started to ease. Some companies ended up coming to hybrid arrangements as a kind of compromise. That's still not enough for some though and it has led to signs of retaliation, in the form of trends like quiet quitting or “act your wage” which we've talked about in past episodes of Do You Really Know?. Today, we're talking about coffee badging specifically, which is a kind of hack employees are using to fulfil office day mandates without actually spending too much time in the office. In response to the ever-evolving landscape of work, a novel trend known as "coffee badging" has surfaced, embodying a passive resistance to stringent return-to-office mandates. This phenomenon, where employees briefly make a physical appearance at the office, grab a coffee, engage in short interactions, and then retreat to work remotely for the remainder of the day, reflects a subtle rebellion against policies that mandate a return to traditional office structures. However, the question arises: are these policies genuinely strict, or are they attempting to restore a pre-pandemic normalcy that employees are still resisting? Welcome to the latest episode of Capitalist Investor, where we dive deep into the evolving landscape of work and finance. Derek and Luke ignite a thought-provoking discussion on the generational shift towards seeking work-life balance and the complications of treating jobs solely as income sources. Tony brings a personal touch, reflecting on career pivots influenced by social media's shiny portrayal of life. But it's not all about the hustle; we explore the dark side of our online world, discussing its impact on mental health and societal values. As we unpack the future of financial advising with AI and debate its reliability, we invite you to ponder with us: Is technology the adviser of tomorrow or the barrier to human connection?1. The Quest for Work-Life BalanceIn this generation, there is a noticeable shift in attitude towards work. Unlike the previous generations that prized long work hours and limited vacation, today's workers are embracing a revolutionary approach to work-life balance. Derek and Luke lead a probing conversation on this cultural shift, examining the consequences of viewing jobs merely as income sources rather than lifelong careers. They explore how this view could potentially lead to job dissatisfaction and stunt personal growth and development.2. The Social Media EffectTony opens up about his career transition journey and expounds on how the omnipresent social media affects lifestyle aspirations. In particular, they discuss the dark side of social media – its impact on mental health. The hosts unpack a slew of issues including escalated suicide rates and the addiction to attention and approval online. Furthermore, they touch on how the online world has contributed to a decline in moral foundations, religious engagement, and respect among users.3. The AI Debate in Financial Advising and PlanningOne of the more technologically forward-looking discussions of the episode revolves around the use of AI in financial strategy. They contemplate the feasibility of AI providing robust financial planning advice, such as leveraging IRA funds for purchasing a home. Luke champions the necessity of human touch in advising, whereas Tony expresses ambivalence about our growing reliance on AI for complex and personalized decisions.4. Changing Office Culture and DynamicsThe hosts throw a light on today's office atmosphere marked by "coffee badging" – where showing up and being noticed takes precedence over real productivity. They draw a contrast between work cultures in small businesses versus large corporations and discuss how remote work has reshaped our working habits. This part of the episode critically examines the current generation's respect for work and their productivity levels.5. AI's Ascendancy and Future Job MarketA thought-provoking segment centers on AI's role across industries, and whether its advancement might eventually eclipse human roles, dramatically altering the job market. The hosts dispute AI's trustworthiness and ponder its implications on free time and mental health, should it replace human jobs. They also speculate on AI's capacity to handle complex tasks in tax and finance sectors, and whether an AI-driven market will become overly efficient, referencing insights from the film "War Games."Don't forget to leave your comments below and let us know what topics you would like us to cover in future episodes. Pour beaucoup, le télétravail s'est imposé comme une condition de recrutement. Mais il n'est pas pratiqué par tous, plus précisément 3 quarts des travailleurs. Topic #1: It's prudent for businesses to continue the hiring and interview process during the holiday season. Job seekers can also take advantage of the fact that there will be less competition for employment during this time. Topic #2:The battle over return-to-office mandates has been waging for a while. As a sign of discontent and protest, some employees, like the trends of quiet quitting, acting their wage or Bare Minimum Mondays, have started “coffee badging.” This new workplace trend has emerged as a way for employees to meet their required in-office attendance policies, but avoid spending too much time there. Tune in to see how this can end badly for workers.

In partnership with American Student Assistance® (ASA), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Stand Together and the Walton Foundation, the New Pathways campaign will question education's status quo and propose new methods of giving students a chance to experience success in what's next.  On this Getting Smart Town Hall we took a look at a number of organizations and technologies that enable powerful badging and credentialing opportunities to help students share their stories, their learning and their priorities. Credentialing is the new way to communicate capabilities and provides more reliable and precise capability signaling than courses and grades. We'll explore the secondary and postsecondary learning and employment ecosystems where credentialing is emerging, how it complements skills-based hiring, and the implications for learner records. We were joined by Project Director of Project Zero, David Kidd as well as Director of Product Management at XQ, Rachel Safferstone. These two guests are doing incredible work in the space of credentialing and badging and both the vision and the experience to help us better understand the broader landscape.   Links: Recap Post Links from the Town Hall Getting Smart Town Halls Unbundled Learning: A Getting Smart Publication

[00:10:02] Venia is curious to know from Emma what badges are available and what level of degree are people going to be able to use them in order to negotiate their own identities in an online space? [00:12:28] Don wants to know if the badging helps address concerns by project maintainers that they can be inclusive without taking on personal data stewardship responsibilities. Georg mentions Matt Snell leading the badging project, and how he just had a talk at the Open Source Summit North America, where he talked about everything they’re doing. [00:15:48] Emma tells us the number one problem that people make when they approach community health metrics. Also, she tells us how she recommends people go about coming up with good questions. This week I want to take a look at digital badging as a tool for your academic tool chest. I have been around the concept of badging my whole life. Badging in the workplace and through volunteering has shaped my life. There is more to learning than what occurs in the classroom. Digital badging helps to capture learning that is not formally recognized through the formal transcript process. This week we are going to take a look at digital badges for an academic classroom. For part of that discussion, I am going to tell you about my experiences with badging. Come learn more. Today's Crucial Conversation guest was Noah Geisel. We've followed each other on Twitter for years and when we finally got to meet in person for the first time in January, we really hit it off. Noah is also a big believer in entrepreneurial spirit, taking advantage of opportunities, empowering youth, and making a difference in the world. He's also a kindred spirit in taking on a lot of commitments. One of those that we spoke about is the 2019 Badge Summit, an all-day conference dedicated to learning and sharing about Digital Badge Credentials. It's June 22nd (the day before ISTE) in Philadelphia on the campus of Temple University. We talked about the conference, who attends and what people can expect to take away (spoiler: inspiration, connections, exemplars). This led us on a winding conversation about skills and hiring and what really matters. Noah currently teachers Digital Media & Learning at University of Colorado Denver. A career-long Spanish teacher, he also co-hosts the MFLTwitterati podcast about technology and language learning. He supports teachers with professional development and consults in Human Centered Design and Digital Badge Credentials.
