Rage Against the Machine Review by Eduardo Rivadavia Probably the first album to successfully merge the seemingly disparate sounds of rap and heavy metal, Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut was groundbreaking enough when released in 1992, but many would argue that it has yet to be surpassed in terms of influence and sheer brilliance -- though countless bands have certainly tried. This is probably because the uniquely combustible creative relationship between guitar wizard Tom Morello and literate rebel vocalist Zack de la Rocha could only burn this bright, this once. While the former's roots in '80s heavy metal shredding gave rise to an inimitable array of six-string acrobatics and rhythmic special effects (few of which anyone else has managed to replicate), the latter delivered meaningful rhymes with an emotionally charged conviction that suburban white boys of the ensuing nu-metal generation could never hope to touch. As a result, syncopated slabs of hard rock insurrection like "Bombtrack," "Take the Power Back," and "Know Your Enemy" were as instantly unforgettable as they were astonishing. Yet even they paled in comparison to veritable clinics in the art of slowly mounting tension such as "Settle for Nothing," "Bullet in the Head," and the particularly venomous "Wake Up" (where Morello revises Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" riff for his own needs) -- all of which finally exploded with awesome power and fury. And even listeners who were unable (or unwilling) to fully process the band's unique clash of muscle and intellect were catered to, as RATM were able to convey their messages through stubborn repetition via the fundamental challenge of "Freedom" and their signature track, "Killing in the Name," which would become a rallying cry of disenfranchisement, thanks to its relentlessly rebellious mantra of "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" Ultimately, if there's any disappointment to be had with this near-perfect album, it's that it still towers above subsequent efforts as the unequivocal climax of Rage Against the Machine's vision. As such, it remains absolutely essential.

Sure, prior to 1992 there had been combinations of rap and rock. But they were mostly of the novelty variety - a way to offer a safe crossover of different genres and audiences. When Rage Against the Machine unloaded their debut album in 1992, they kicked the crap out of the novelty and drew a line in the sand that told the world that playtime was over. This wasn't "Walk this Way" or "I'm the Man." Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford laid down some of the heaviest, grooviest music around -- which was perfect for Zack de la Rocha's growls, screams and diatribes against oppression, racism, authority -- and anything else on his mind. "Bombtrack," "Killing in the Name," "Take the Power Back" and the rest take the spirit of 1960s protest songs with the added element of a world where everyone can see that the revolution was televised. Rage provided the uncensored and unfettered soundtrack.

On the 36th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review one the most influential album of the 1990's, the self-titled debut album by Rage Against The Machine. Led by frontman Zack de la Rocha, guitar legend Tom Morello, bassist extraordinaire, Tim Commerford and hard hitting drummer, Brad Wilk, Rage Against The Machine, combined Metal, Rap, funk and punk with intense political lyrics. Their debut album featured ten hard hitting angst filled songs that spoke to a lot of the issues plaguing society. Racism, police brutality, imperialism and more were met with ferocious intensity of del la Rocha's delivery and the heaviness of the band's pulsating music created an excitement that took the 1990's by storm. The debut album went on to go triple platinum and set the band up as a must see band live. Their live performances, including Woodstock 99! have become legendary. Their lyrics, Tom Morello's guitar sound and more made Rage Against The Machine one of the best bands of the 1990's. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 34 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick and continues our trend of bands that make you think, like R.E.M. and Rush before this. So find out if this becomes Tom's new number one album and if Zeus or Sonny pick this last. Hannes Gaming Vacation takes Epic proportions while Martin wonders if behind the scenes content from the Bombtrack album would ruin the magic trick.
Souvenirs. Rage Against The Machine's debut album really made the world stand up and take notice. Here was an album that took the ferocity of the streets, married it with grooves, funk, and oodles of heaviness to create music that literally packed a hell of a punch. Songs include the instantly iconic Killing In The Name Of to hits such as Bombtrack, Freedom, Wake Up, Take The Power Back, Bullet In The Head and Settle For Nothing, to the deeper cuts such as Know Your Enemy, Fistful Of Steel and Township Rebellion. 10 tracks. 1 album. Is it an All A's Album? It is the seventeenth episode of the second season of The Outside Corner Fantasy Baseball Podcast! On this week's show Fort Wetherill owner Chopmist Charlie is pinch hitting for Johnny, so bait your lobster traps, cross your fingers, and pray that the show doesn't go too far off the rails without our incomparable producer! Dr. Tron has to explain some basic Outside Corner concepts such as spread, splooges, FAPRATE, and the one line that he and Johnny won't cross. They also discuss some of June's hottest hitters, the Gleyber Torres injury, ancient Egyptian pornography, and the importance of a quality breakfast for Marcus Stroman. Trey struggles with his Freedom. Lance is trying to avoid a Bullet In The Head. Seth needs to Wake Up or Summer is going to Take The Power Back. The Rage Against the Machine references are thin, we get it. Ryan struggles with trusting his brother, and the gang decides to throw Trey a birthday party that gets out of hand. The OC men watched The O.C. S02E19 "The Rager" and dropped this Bombtrack of an episode. Sorry.
