It just fits. Not only does Accidental PM perfectly capture how many of us "stumbled upon" the role, but it is also the title of author Ray W. Frohnhoefer's bestselling book, Accidental Project Manager: Zero to Hero in 7 Days. Ray wrote this book with the intent of helping project managers quickly learn the essential skills they need to start or refresh their careers. He is also the author of Accidental Agile Project Manager: Zero to Hero in 7 Iterations, and Risk Assessment Framework: Successfully Navigating Uncertainty. With over 35 years of experience managing projects, programs, and portfolios in multiple industries, Ray utilizes his writing and teaching to train and mentor project management students from around the world via online and in-class courses. He works with educational institutions such as UC San Diego Extension and California Southern University. Recent corporate clients have included Breg, Cymer, San Diego County Water Authority, and the US Navy. His personal mission is to help individuals and organizations improve their practices of project, program, and portfolio management through many of his educational and consulting engagements which focus on accidental, new, and aspiring project managers. Ray talks to us about his bestselling book, teachings, and much more on this week's installment of The Everyday PM Podcast. Here's a sneak peek at what we cover: - His inspiration for writing Accidental Project Manager - How he came up with the title - Ray's professional journey including if he himself is an accidental PM - PROJECT as an acronym and how Ray thoughtfully structured the book to help project managers learn and retain the information Enjoyed this conversation with Ray? Click here to see all the Healthcast. BioBalance Healthcast 2020-2021 has been a huge year for diagnosing my patients with alcohol addiction. It is well known in the psychology, counseling, and medical profession that the recent quarantine caused by Covid 19 created the perfect atmosphere for potential alcoholics to become true alcoholics. I am not a counselor and have no training in diagnosis of alcoholics. More importantly, I have a difficult time confronting patients who show evidence of being an alcoholic, even when it is blatantly obvious that the patient sitting in front of me has been drinking. My nurse practitioners have also asked me how to address this problem when it is obvious that our patients, those who are coming in to have a consult with me to receive hormone pellets to get healthier are negating their own treatment with their addiction to alcohol. I wasn't taught how to discuss this subject when I was in medical school, so I asked an excellent psychologist with more pages to his CV than mine, to help me and my viewers understand how to help themselves or their loved ones who have a problem with alcohol. My guest is Michael Mahon, Psy.D., who has a weekly podcast called Psych with Mike, and a website of the same name. Michael Mahon is a Doctor of Psychology, from California Southern University, Irvine, 2011, who spent 20 plus years as a licensed counselor in private practice, and who has years of teaching other counselors at Webster University and two other universities. Questions to Dr. Mahon: Would you please Define Alcoholism and help us understand the difference between alcoholism and Social Drinking? Alcoholism is defined as an addiction to alcohol that causes tolerance to alcohol and withdrawal symptoms when an alcoholic is not drinking. Alcoholism is now viewed as on a continuum with Alcoholism at one end and excessive intake of alcohol without tolerance or withdrawal symptoms. What are the known symptoms and signs displayed by an alcoholic? An alcoholic has the primary symptoms of irritability, a mood change. When alcoholics are drinking, they may not be so uptight and are more social and more cheerful. The opposite is true when they are not drinking. What kinds of social issues do alcoholics have that may be a clue to their problem? Irritability and being in denial can cause quite a bit of friction within a couple's relationship. Being confronted by a spouse put an alcoholic in more denial than ever. They tend to have cover stories to hide their drinking They black out and must cover their tracks which leads to lying and distrust in the relationship. Why are alcoholics in such denial about their condition? Alcohol provides a modicum of medical therapy for social anxiety and other psychological problems which makes the alcoholic want and need to continue. The problem comes in when an alcoholic can't stop drinking at the point when their social anxiety is improved…they always think that more is better and that is the problem, it isn't! How do people act at home to hide their drinking problem? They closet drink, take meds to cover up the tremors that occur when they are withdrawing. This leads to evasive discussions within the family. Everyone feels out of control. Remember you can't change another person's behavior, just your own. Any ultimatums must be something that you can follow through with. Alcoholism Is like other addictions, how should it be discussed with a loved one who is obviously an alcoholic? Confrontation or asking an alcoholic to stop is not ever going to work until they have already decided to stop drinking. Then it is time to help the alcoholic get into counseling. What is the best way to get an alcoholic into treatment, counseling? The alcoholic must be ready to stop, and family members must be ready to stop being a codependent. Counseling is for alcoholics who are trying to decide if they want to quit drinking or after they have gone through rehab to help him or her through withdrawal. No alcoholic who drinks daily should go cold turkey. It could be deadly, so being admitted for medical withdrawal is the only safe method. Could you please discuss what rehabilitation centers do for the alcoholic? Rehab centers provide a safe place to withdraw from alcohol. They are also there to arrange outpatient follow up for counseling to help the alcoholic get through the first several months. This process is called “Stages of Change”. It has been very successful. Thank you to Dr. Mike for educating us on Alcoholism and the symptoms as well as the steps to recovery. Next week we will talk about Achieving a Lasting Solution to Alcoholism.

Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
About Dr. Hecht: My educational experience first began when I took a high school assessment test saying I’d be good at engineering, and I enjoyed the design part of this field. I earned my degree in Mechanical Engineering from New York University. Then wanted to acquire my MBA, but did not have a business background, so I went to Colombia University and received my master’s in industrial engineering. However, being a people person and having my Master of Science, I decided to go into teaching High School and Community College for over ten years. I wanted to go into full-time college teaching, but did not have the degree so, I went back to school to obtain my Doctor of Science in Industrial and Management engineering going from an instructor to professor. However, throughout that time, it was very difficult to earn the Sc.D. degree. I was still working as a full-time teacher, had a family to take care of, had a 40-mile commute, and was only able to take classes after hours because the school was not accommodating to my schedule as a part time student and professor. I finally finished my doctorate at the age of forty-three. While I worked as a dean for working-class students trying to earn their master’s degree in the evenings, I saw how tired my students were. They all had different learning habits, a hard time staying awake, and struggled to afford their classes. I tried to fight the system to accommodate for these students, yet I did not have much leeway to teach as I wanted to. All these experiences motivated me to found California Southern University because I understand the difficulties to earning a degree while juggling life’s challenges. I wanted to change the educational structure, where students’ backgrounds and college testing scores aren’t the main factor. At CalSouthern we define our students as learners, because they are the center of the process. I want the learner to be the focus so they can reach their goals, can afford their classes, and avoid being in debt to earn a practical education and degree that sets them up for their future. Your outcome is what’s important and CalSouthern wants to provide the learners with the best opportunities for success. After running the school on my own for a few years through pen and paper, the university began to evolve from phone and mail to 100% online accredited institution honoring learners intellectual and individualistic freedom. In this episode we discuss: Dr. Hecht's upbringing What sports he played Why he went into Engineering Getting his Doctorate Creating the university His first student And more! The world is filled with words. Everybody’s talking. We communicate primarily through our words. But what about the space between the words? We are always trying to determine what to say next, but how much do we think about when to say it—and when not to? Every compelling relationship—with family, friends or co-workers, and even the therapeutic relationship—requires silent moments to deepen the connection, trust and love that make them the “pearl of great price” which we ultimately seek. This is true even with the relationship between our body, mind and soul, that is, our relationship with ourself. “Silence in the Space Between” was first published in 1998 as Dr. Steven Beazley’s doctoral dissertation, earning him a PsyD in clinical psychology. Now, after 16 years, he is returning to the topic of silence and fashioning the dissertation into a book. A new faculty mentor in CalSouthern’s School of Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Beazley visited the university’s campus last fall to attend a meeting and was randomly, and quite surprisingly, reunited with his dissertation chair, CalSouthern curriculum developer Dr. Bob Weathers. The two had not seen each other since Dr. Beazley’s doctoral defense in 1998. During this lecture, as if there were no passage of space or time, the two will sit down and “talk” with you about silence as it relates to space, time and relationships. Those who view the lecture will be able to: - Describe the qualities that silence possesses and communicates. - Understand the relationship of silence to words and sound. - Identify usage of silence in the art forms, as well as the role of “white space.” - Explain how the therapeutic relationship is affected by silence and its role in rapport. - Begin conceptualizing their own use of silence in their relationships, deepening the connections they make in their lives. Speaker Bios: Dr. Steven BeazleyDr. Steven Beazley is a new faculty mentor at CalSouthern, where he teaches doctoral project courses. Dr. Beazley’s professional experience is highly eclectic: he has worked as a professional actor/singer, university professor, and was president and CEO of an arts and entertainment event center that included an 8,500 seat outdoor amphitheater featuring some of the biggest music acts in the world. He earned his PsyD from Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology, where he also served as a professor upon graduation. Dr. Beazley owns a consulting firm called Lean Forward that specializes in arts and entertainment and education consultation. In 2015, Dr. Beazley will add executive coaching and personal life coaching to the services offered by Lean Forward. Dr. Robert WeathersDr. Bob Weathers is a curriculum developer at California Southern University. He has more than 35 years of experience educating graduate-level clinicians. In addition to having served as the founding clinical director of a local, nationally recognized residential drug and alcohol treatment center for adults, Dr. Weathers has decades of professional experience in providing psychotherapy and coaching to clients presenting with the entire range of clinical issues and concerns. A sought-after speaker and prolific writer, Dr. Weathers’ current research areas of interest focus on reducing shame and stigma in addiction and recovery by means of instructing clients and their families about addiction and the brain.
The centerpiece of this presentation is dedicated to providing as simple and accessible an introduction to the neuroscience of addiction as possible. But the guiding rationale behind this ongoing project has more direct, clinical implications. Addiction and recovery are unfortunately often hamstrung by personal feelings of shame and cultural attitudes of stigma. In this presentation, we intend to explore in-depth the usefulness of applying up-to-date, evidence-based concepts from neuroscience. The aim is to provide clinical tools for reducing the shame and stigma that so often accompany addiction and recovery – whether for the client in recovery, his/her spouse and family, and even the therapist. Our specific focus throughout this lecture/dialogue is on summarizing and practically applying recent findings from neuroscience about addiction as an empirically documented brain disease. Drs. Edward Teyber and Faith McClure Teyber return to California Southern University to continue their discussion about the therapeutic relationship as the vehicle for transformation and change, highlighting critical, core concepts that are widely employed across the relationally oriented therapies. In this lecture, the presenters will focus on their recently published article “Working with the Process Dimension in Relational Therapies: Guidelines for Clinical Training,” which explores how process—the “here-and-now interaction between therapist and client”—can be utilized to make these relational treatment modalities more effective. After a short introduction to the topic, Drs. Teyber and McClure Teyber will engage the audience in an interactive discussion that will reveal how the process and process comments often constitute the variable that make relational constructs work, “bringing immediacy and intensity to the therapeutic relationship and giving us a way to enter the client’s distress and engage with their core concerns,” as the authors note in the article. Speaker Bios: Dr. Edward TeyberDr. Edward Teyber is professor of psychology, director of the psychology clinic and president of the Foundation Board of Directors at California State University, San Bernardino. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from Michigan State University. His work has focused on marital and family relations and child adjustment, child-rearing practices and attachment styles, and the counseling relationship. Faith Holmes McClureDr. Faith McClure Teyber is professor of psychology at California State University, San Bernardino. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her clinical and research interests are multi-cultural issues in mental health, and at-risk children, families, and adults, with particular focus on those who have suffered trauma. In addition to the groundbreaking Interpersonal Process in Therapy: An Integrative Model, Drs. Teyber and McClure Teyber also have co-authored Casebook in Child and Adolescent Treatment: Cultural and Familial Contexts. Their texts are studied at colleges and universities nationwide.
