It was a pleasure to welcome a brand new band to the podcast, the Laois based Chiral Labs. The band experiment with all forms of punk, metal, rock and dance to create their own hyrid form of alternative metal. Formed by guitarist, producer and sound engineer, Gary Duncan from Portlaoise, a producer at Red Lake Sound locally, and vocalist Adam Brewer, originally from Dublin, the lads were joined by Spooky' Chris Craig on guitars, and bassist Al ‘Buster Bhoy' Tierney. I talk to Adam, Gary and Al about their approach to song writing, videos and future gig plans. The lads certainly fall under the 'ones to watch' category as they offer an exciting approach to their music visually and creatively. Researchers tune the speed of chirality switchingHello and welcome to the NanoLSI podcast. Thank you for joining us today. In this episode we feature the latest research by Shigehisa Akine at the Kanazawa University NanoLSI.The research described in this podcast was published in Science Advances in November 2023Kanazawa University NanoLSI websitehttps://nanolsi.kanazawa-u.ac.jp/en/Researchers tune the speed of chirality switchingResearchers at Kanazawa University report in Science Advances how they can accelerate and decelerate chirality inversion in large cage molecules using alkali metal ion binding.Chiral molecules can have dramatically different functional properties while sharing identical chemical formulae and almost identical structures. The molecular structure of two types of a chiral molecule – so-called enantiomers – are mirror images of each other where one cannot be superposed on the other any more than your right hand can fit front-to-back on the left. While a lot of chiral molecules are traditionally considered fixed as left- or right-handed, chiral molecules based on helices are known to be able to switch in response to changes in their environment. Now researchers led by Shigehisa Akine at Kanazawa University have demonstrated how environmental changes can also accelerate or decelerate this chiral inversion process, providing “a novel time-programmable switchable system”.The researchers focused their study on “metallocryptand (R6)-LNi3”, an organic molecule featuring metal atoms in a cage-like molecular structure that can exist in one of two possible forms described as the P or M type (right- and left-handed, respectively). In its pure form (R6)-LNi3 has a preferred ratio of P type to M type of 12:88. Starting from a 50:50 ratio, the molecules will flip between one form and the other with a preference for flipping towards the M type to meet that ratio. The researchers measured this change in ratio using NMR and circular dichroic spectroscopy. However, add an alkali metal into the cage cavity and this preference can change.By adding alkali metal ions to the solution of the (R6)-LNi3 the researchers could confirm that the metal ions readily bound to the metallocryptand from the changes in the spectroscopic signatures of the molecules. In addition, the bound ion also shifted the preferred ratio by a margin and with a speed that depended on which alkali metal was used.So what is causing this effect? The researchers attribute the different rates and ratios to differences in binding constants not just between the metal ion and the two forms of the molecule but also a virtual binding constant for the molecule transitioning between the two. The binding between a caesium ion and the P type molecule was more than 20 times greater than that with the M type so the solution eventually switched to a higher proportion of the P type with a P:M ratio of 75:25 over the course of 21 hours. The final ratio with a rubidium ion was similarly bias to the P type reaching a slightly lower ratio of 72:28 but in just 100 minutes. With potassium ion the equilibrium ratio was lower again at 68:32 but reached within just a minute, three orders of magnitude faster than for the caesium ion. The researchers attribute this speed to the large virtual bonding constant with the transitioning molecule. With smaller ions – lithium and sodium ions – the preferred molecular type did not actually change but the final ratio was reached much faster. It is the first time researchers have demonstrated that such chiral inversion can be sped up and slowed down by tuning the molecules environment.“This research can provide a new insight into the development of an on-deNanoLSI Podcast website

Abstract: Chiral actin bundles have been shown to play an important role in cell dynamics, but our understanding of the molecular mechanisms which combine to generate chirality remains incomplete. We numerically simulate a crosslinked filopodial bundle under the actions of helical myosin motors and/or formins and examine the collective buckling and twisting of the actin bundle. We find that the myosin spinning action effectively braids the bundle, compacting it, generating buckling, and enhancing crosslinking. Stochastic fluctuations of actin polymerization rates also contribute to filament buckling and bending of the bundle. Faster turnover of transient crosslinks attenuates the buckling and enhances coiling and compaction of the bundle. Formin twisting action by itself is not effective in inducing filopodial coiling and compaction, but co-rotating formins synergize with helical motors to coil and compact the actin bundle. We discuss implications of our findings for mechanisms of cytoskeletal chirality. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Laura Leay interviews Monica Olvera de la Cruz of Northwestern University and her colleagues who gained insight into biochirality. By analyzing self-assembly for a series of amphiphiles, Cn-K, consisting of an ionizable amino acid [lysine (K)] coupled to alkyl tails with n = 12, 14, or 16 carbons, the researchers found the degree of ionization is what controls the shape. They incorporate this phenomenon into a membrane energetics model. Furthermore, their experimental techniques show that the nanoscale structure of the chiral assemblies can be continuously controlled by solution ionic conditions. The model moves researchers one step closer to building entire cells in the laboratory and could lead to the development of nanotechnology such as drug delivery and electronics. This research is published in a recent issue of ACS Central Science (https://doi.org/10.1021/acscentsci.2c00447).

Chiral gravitational waves from thermalized neutrinos in the early Universe by Philipp Gubler et al. on Sunday 18 September We investigate polarized gravitational waves generated by chiral fermions in the early Universe. In particular, we focus on the contribution from left-handed neutrinos in thermal equilibrium with finite temperature and chemical potential in the radiation dominated era. We compute the correlation functions of gravitational fields pertinent to the Stokes parameter $V$ characterizing the circular polarization of gravitational waves in the Minkowski and expanding spacetime backgrounds. In the expanding universe, we find that the thermalized neutrinos induce a non-vanishing $V$ linear to the neutrino degeneracy parameter and wavenumber of gravitational waves in the long wavelength region. While the magnitude of the gravitational waves generated by thermal neutrinos is too small to be detectable by current and planned third generation gravitational wave detectors, their observations by future generation detectors for ultra-high frequency regimes could provide information on the neutrino degeneracy parameter in the early Universe. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2205.10516v2

You will hear the following terms used during the interview. I've included some descriptions here. Chirality – Chirality is a feature where an object can be distinguished from a mirror-image version of itself (for instance left and right gloves, or shoes). In chemistry, chirality is often due to the presence of an asymmetrical carbon atom. Chiral isomers are identified as either L-type or D-type, based on how polarized light is rotated when passing through a molecule.Superstructure – In the context of this discussion “When the structures become way, way bigger than the building blocks, you can call the superstructures.” They represent massive polymers of the base construction moleculesNanomaterials / Nanoparticles – A term used to describe substances where the base unit is small – between 1 nm - 100 nm along one or more dimensionsAmyloid beta-peptide (also known as Abeta, or Aβ) – Peptides between 36-43 amino acids long that form insoluble amyloid plaques in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Although the specific role of Amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease is not fully understood, it is widely accepted that they are responsible for the pathology of the disease.Peptide – A short chain of 2-50 amino acids, linked by a peptide bond. A dipeptide has two amino acids in the chain, a tripeptide has three amino acids, and so on.Hydrophobic pockets – When folded into a functional configuration, the amino acids of a protein can be brought into physical proximity. When the majority of amino acids surrounding an ‘opening' in the surface of the protein are hydrophobic, it creates a region that is unattractive to hydrophilic molecules. As the majority of biological systems are water-based, this hydrophobic region stimulates other hydrophobic regions of suitable molecules to bind. This then typically leads to downstream activation or effectCatalytic triads - a set of three coordinated amino acids that can be found in the active site of some enzymes. Catalytic triads are most commonly found in hydrolase and transferase enzymes.Antimicrobial resistance – This is an evolutionary process where bacteria become immune to the effects of antimicrobial agents (such as antibiotics). Typically this is caused by exposure are designed to kill bacteria. To do this, the bacteria need to be exposed to the agents at sub-lethal levels. As antimicrobial agents accumulate in the environment, it is believed that this provides an opportunity for bacteria to be exposed at sub-lethal levels, which accelerates the rate at which the bacteria develops resistance to the antimicrobial. We discussed the drawing of Alice going through the looking glass during our discussion, you can see it at https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/995913/view/through-the-looking-glass-alice-pushes-through-the-mirror.Silvia also mentions an article in the journal ACS Nano, you can find that at: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.0c09386#Silvia is contactable on social media, you can find her on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/silvia-marchesan-2590712/On Twitter, search @MarchesanLabThe group website is www.marchesanlab.com Our theme music is "Wholesome" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)Music from https://filmmusic.ioLicense: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Connect with me (Paul) at https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulorange/H.E.L. group can be found at www.helgroup.com online,on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/hel-group/ on Twitter we're @hel_group, https://twitter.com/hel_groupor search for us on Facebook

Despite promising to leave Weinstein world for an overdue holiday, Matt and Chris have been lured back by a world shattering theory with a cosmic vision of ultimate unity! We are speaking, of course, about Eric Weinstein's revolutionary theory of everything: 'Geometric Unity'. To help uncover the mysteries embedded deep within this scientific Rosetta stone, Matt and Chris are joined by a special guest Tim Nguyen. Tim is a mathematician and the co-author of a recent paper that tried to mathematically construct and critically assess the theory of Geometric Unity as laid out in Eric's content. Eric has not exactly welcomed the critical feedback and has accused Tim and his co-author, Theo, of having nefarious motives and being very bad guys. So we thought it was worth talking to Tim about their real motivations for the paper, their criticisms of Geometric Unity, and whether they are official DISC agents. Join us as we leap one more time into Weinstein world! Notes provided by Tim Response to Geometric Unity https://timothynguyen.files.wordpress.com/2021/02/geometric_unity.pdf (paper) by Timothy Nguyen and Theo Polya and corresponding https://t.co/V5BppvwyPQ?amp=1 (blog post). The paper provides 25 clickable timestamps to Weinstein video segments to let the reader confirm directly the veracity the criticisms.  Clubhouse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LRjAWstrPc&t=3916s (recording) with Eric evading questions about Geometric Unity and implying his critics are bad actors. Technical notes on Weinstein's limited responses: 1) Weinstein confesses on Joe Rogan Episode #1628 that “one of the criticisms is valid but is something that I would have brought up anyways” (see time near 73:30). Correspondingly, in Section 8.2 of Weinstein's Geometric Unity, he admits that “unfortunately, the author is no longer conversant … and has been unable to locate the notes from decades ago that originally picked out the [Shiab] operator”. The inability to construct the Shiab operator remains a fundamental objection to Geometric Unity. 2) Weinstein says https://youtu.be/0LRjAWstrPc?t=4040 (here), the authors misunderstand GU as being https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiral_gauge_theory (chiral). But the objection is that the theory has a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiral_anomaly (chiral anomaly), which is not contingent on the theory being chiral. 3) Weinstein suggests https://youtu.be/0LRjAWstrPc?t=4049 (here) (and on Joe Rogan) that there is incorrect inference that he is using supersymmetry in 14 dimensions. The https://youtu.be/N_aN8NnoeO0?t=3992 (interview) referenced in the response paper suggests otherwise, where he explicitly mentions supersymmetry. The “sign flip” discussion Nguyen used to deduce that Weinstein does not understand the Seiberg-Witten equations concerns the issue of obtaining a crucial bound on the spinor field (as discussed in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seiberg%E2%80%93Witten_invariants (Wikipedia article)) needed to obtain compactness. Having the wrong sign makes the entire theory ill-behaved. Support this podcast

T., Gainza, P., Keshipeddy, S., Fowler, V. G., Wright, D. L., Donald, B. R. Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance is a health care crisis. The resistance-conferring mutation F98Y in Staphylococcus aureus dihydrofolate reductase (SaDHFR) reduces effectiveness of antifolates, e.g., trimethoprim (TMP). Although propargyl-linked antifolates (PLAs) are much more resilient than TMP towards F98Y, this substitution still vitiates their inhibition potency. Surprisingly, differences in the enantiomeric configuration at the stereogenic center of PLAs influence the isomeric state of NADPH cofactor. Is resistance correlated with chiral evasion? A mechanism of action underpinning this coupling is unknown. To understand the molecular basis of F98Y-mediated resistance and how PLAs' inhibition drives NADPH isomeric states, we used OSPREY to analyze a comprehensive suite of structural, biophysical, biochemical, and computational data. We present a model showing how F98Y SaDHFR exploits a different anomeric configuration of NADPH to evade certain PLAs' inhibition, while other PLAs remain resilient to resistance. Our model should enable general design of inhibitors that are resilient to chiral evasion. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

The upshot of extensive studies of uctuations in condensed matter systems is that their qualitative importance is typically con#ned to isolated critical points of continuous transitions between phases of matter. This conventional wisdom also predicts the number of low energy Goldstone modes based on the so-called “G/H” pattern of symmetry breaking. I will discuss a class of systems, some quite wellknown, that violate this standard paradigm. Namely, they exhibit a fewer than “G/H” number of low-energy modes due to an emergent Higgs mechanism. Even more spectacularly, such systems exhibit “critical” ordered phases, with universal power-law properties reminiscent of a critical point, but requiring no #ne-tuning and extending throughout the ordered phase. One exciting recently discovered state is the heliconical nematic that in addition to above phenomena also exhibits spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.

Measuring topological invariants and chiral Meissner currents with ultracold bosonic atoms

Plus, Chad informs us about hydrophobic sand, which sounds dangerously fun.   00:18:55 - The drinks too, must flow. Charlie has the very proprietary Rogue Chocolate Stout. Complete electroweak chiral Lagrangian with a light Higgs at NLO

We consider the Standard Model, including a light scalar boson h, as an effective theory at the weak scale v = 246 GeV of some unknown dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking. This dynamics may be strong, with h emerging as a pseudo-Goldstone boson. The symmetry breaking scale Λ is taken to be at 4 π v or above. We review the leading-order Lagrangian within this framework, which is nonrenormalizable in general. A chiral Lagrangian can then be constructed based on a loop expansion. A systematic power counting is derived and used to identify the classes of counterterms that appear at one loop order. With this result the complete Lagrangian is constructed at next-to-leading order, O ( v 2 / Λ 2 ) . This Lagrangian is the most general effective description of the Standard Model containing a light scalar boson, in general with strong dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking. Scenarios such as the {SILH} ansatz or the dimension-6 Lagrangian of a linearly realized Higgs sector can be recovered as special cases.
