Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem were rebuilding the walls, but their work quickly attracted opposition. Their enemies mocked them, threatened them, and attempted to create fear among the people. Yet Nehemiah responded by praying, setting a watch, and reminding the people to remember the Lord. In this episode, we look at Nehemiah 4:1-9 and verses 14-15 and consider what happens when opposition comes while we are doing what God has called us to do. The enemy may try to intimidate us, discourage us, or make us afraid—but opposition doesn't mean God has abandoned the work. Jesus commanded His followers to go into all the world and teach the truth. But throughout Scripture, we see that not everyone wants to hear that truth. Jesus was rejected in His own hometown of Nazareth. Pilate stood face-to-face with Jesus and asked, “What is truth?” And when given the opportunity to release Jesus, the crowd demanded that Barabbas—a thief and criminal—be released instead. Paul warned Timothy that a time would come when people would not endure sound doctrine. Instead, they would look for teachers who would tell them what they wanted to hear. In this episode, we explore why people reject truth, why they sometimes prefer what is wrong over what is right, and why our responsibility isn't to change the truth to make people comfortable. We are called to proclaim the truth—even when people don't want to hear it.

Peter was in prison, facing what appeared to be certain death. The church prayed, God sent an angel, Peter's chains fell off, the doors opened, and Peter walked out. But then we come to Paul and Silas. They were beaten, thrown into prison, and locked in stocks. Then, in the middle of the night, they prayed and sang praises. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake. The prison doors opened and everyone's chains fell off. So why didn't Paul and Silas escape? Because sometimes God opens a door so you can walk through it—and sometimes He opens a door so you can see what He wants to do while you stay where you are. The answer is found in what happened next. Paul and Silas stayed, and the Philippian jailer and his household heard the Gospel. Then Jesus gives us another important lesson in John 21: Peter became concerned about what would happen to John. Jesus essentially told him, “What is that to thee? follow thou me.” The lesson is simple but powerful: God doesn't give every believer the same assignment, the same journey, or the same outcome. Our responsibility is not to compare our calling with someone else's. Our responsibility is to follow Jesus.

Psalm 30:6 says, “And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.” David discovered something that many of us eventually discover: sometimes our greatest confidence can come immediately before our greatest testing. In this episode, we look at several people in Scripture who experienced tremendous moments of faith and courage, only to find themselves struggling when the trial came. Peter boldly declared that he would never deny Jesus. But when the pressure came, Peter denied Him three times. Elijah stood courageously on Mount Carmel, confronted hundreds of false prophets, and watched God answer his prayer with fire from heaven. Yet shortly afterward, when Jezebel threatened his life, Elijah ran into the wilderness and asked God to take his life. But then we look at Job. Job lost his possessions, his children, and his health. His circumstances could hardly have been worse. Yet despite his tremendous suffering, Job continued to recognize God's sovereignty. The lesson isn't that God's people will never become discouraged, afraid, or overwhelmed. The lesson is that our confidence must never rest in our circumstances, our past victories, or even our own strength. Our confidence must rest in God.

In 1 Peter 2:9–10, Peter gives us a powerful reminder of who we are because of what God has done for us. He says, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.” Those aren't just encouraging words. They describe our identity as God's people. We are chosen. We belong to God. We are called to be different. And we have a purpose: “that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” God didn't bring us out of darkness simply so we could stand around and admire the light. He brought us into the light so that our lives could point others toward Him. Today, let's take a closer look at what it means to be chosen by God, to belong to Him, and to live like people who have been called out of darkness.

Peace the World Can't Give: The Promise of the Holy Spirit – John 14:15–31 In Episode 150 of Divine Table Talk, Jamie and Jane finish John 14 with one of Jesus' greatest promises: we will never have to walk alone. As Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure, He promises the coming of the Holy Spirit—the Advocate, Helper, and Teacher who will remain with them and remind them of everything Jesus has taught. Then, in the middle of uncertainty about what comes next, Jesus gives them something the world cannot manufacture: His peace. Together, Jamie and Jane explore what it means to recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives, how love for Jesus shapes our obedience, and the difference between temporary peace based on circumstances and the lasting peace that comes from Christ. Jesus never promised His followers a life without trouble, questions, or uncertainty. He promised something better: His presence in the middle of it.
