Happy New Year everyone and welcome to Episode 95 of 50Talk. This week we have a quick visit from "Wolverine" on the show and a wife (Cathy) eating breakfast while we record. Aside from all that craziness we have a pretty good show for you guys this week. We hope you all celebrated bringing in the New Year safely and with loved ones or at least the people you want to be in your life for 2024. Cathy and I kept it pretty chill this year. I don't think I had a drink all day and that's cool with me. I enjoy ringing in a new year with my lovely Cathy. This may be our 30th New Year with each other. This past weekend we took a family trip to the Cleveland MetroParks Zoo with our son and Grandson. On the way I stopped and got gas and I have got to thank our President Joe Biden for the gas being $2.19. I know he doesnt get credit for anything good in this country but Victor really appreciates you Mr. President. Even though he has nothing to do with the price of gas. We watched the new Netflix Stand-up Comedy show from Dave Chappelle this past weekend and it was another great hour of Dave Chappelle doing comedy the way only he can do. The show is called The Dreamer and it very entertaining and funny but I know some people ay be offended but we both enjoyed it. We also watched a Documentary from Alexandra Pelosi (Nancy Pelosi's daughter) called The Insurrectionists Next Door. While it was very entertaining  at the same time it is scary as hell that their are people in this country that think the way these people think even after they have been charged with felonies and are about to be sent to prison. Shit this is just America so when you are out their living your life be careful out there because  people out and about think just like these crazies. Cathy came with some "What is" questions that all made me sit back and think about them really seriously. She never fails to get this old head thinking about life and emotions and just being aware of things. Thank you all for joining us this week. We hope you will continue to support us by listening to our show through out 2024. We will see you all next week.

Many changes have happened at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo since Executive Director Christopher Kuhar's previous visit to the City Club in March 2022. This summer, the zoo will open Bear Hollow, an expanded habitat for its tropical bears. The zoo also welcomed Dalia, a new baby Eastern black rhino, and celebrated the first birthday of Kayembe, the first gorilla born at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in its 140 years. The zoo continues to design and plan Primate Forest, a long-term project that will expand the zoo's Rain Forest and create a new home for gorillas and orangutans.rnrnZoos have evolved from simple menageries to science-based education institutions, but zoos are uniquely positioned in our communities to be more important in the future. Omnipresent in cities throughout the country and around the world, zoos have the opportunity to connect communities with not just STEM learning, but also cultural and social aspects of a global community. During his visit, Kuhar will discuss new initiatives and programs at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, as well as the organization's continued focus on wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship.rnrnDr. Christopher Kuhar has served in a variety of leadership roles in the zoo and aquarium community. He has been the Executive Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo since 2013 and served as the Chair of the Board of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums during the COVID pandemic shutdown. Before coming to Cleveland, Kuhar spent five years at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida.rnrnJoin us at the City Club as we hear from Chris Kuhar on the Zoo's role in conservation, science and education in a changing world.

A recent birth of a baby gorilla at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo--the first in their 139 year history--has focused the community's attention on the plight of the Western lowland gorilla, a critically endangered species. The zoo has used this as an opportunity to raise awareness about and financial support for the conservation work they do around the globe, and specifically with gorilla populations in Africa.rnrnThe future of zoos in America is increasingly as focused on wildlife conservation around the globe as it is on providing local visitors with an opportunity to encounter the animal kingdom. With a complicated historical legacy and a commitment to ecological stewardship, zoo leaders have their work cut out for them in the 21st century. At the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, leaders are learning how to do this through their work with primates.rnrnExecutive Director of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo since 2012, Chris Kuhar has devoted a great deal of his career to work with primates, previously serving as the zoo's Curator of Primates and Small Mammals, and as Research Manager at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Kuhar has also served as Chair of the Board for the Association of Zoos and Aquarium.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and CrossCountry Mortgage are inviting the public to help choose a name for the first gorilla born at the zoo in its 139-year history. The naming opportunity not only will help the male gorilla, born October 26, settle into his home at the zoo but also supports conservation of the critically endangered species in the wild. Participants can cast votes online by making a financial contribution for any of three names at FutureForWildlife.org/gorillanaming or by voting in person at the gorilla habitat at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Whether you work with great apes or not you have to listen to this episode! Here is why. This episode is all about making a difference. It is also a great reminder that everyone has the power to make changes that can have a tremendous impact on animal welfare. As you listen to this episode, I encourage you to think about the similarities to training a new behavior. It all starts with what you can do now and how you can build upon that beginning. My special guests Emily Ellison of Cameron Park Zoo and Laura Klutts of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo took the inspiration they experienced from a learning opportunity and helped grow this into an in-depth Great Ape Cardiac Workshop. If you are working with primates, you will be further inspired by the information that is being collected and shared at this event. We covered a lot of details in the podcast, including the dates for the next event. Visit the episode web page for links to the workshop and super inspiring video clips courtesy of Waco City Cable Channel.

Kuhar received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Akron in 1997, his Master of Science in zoology from Oklahoma State University in 2000 and his doctorate in experimental psychology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for four years, Kuhar has served as the Board Liaison to the Animal Welfare Committee, and as a member of the Safety Committee, Animal Population Management Committee, Research and Technology Committee as well as multiple TAGS and SSPs. Kuhar also serves as an AZA Executive Leadership Development Program mentor. In this episode of Destination on the Left, Executive Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Dr. Christopher Kuhar, joins us to discuss his branding strategy for the zoo. He talks about leading with the mission to increase awareness of the work organizations are doing behind the scenes. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How zoos are weaving their mission into their brand story Why balance is so important How the Cleveland Zoo became apart of an award-winning special parks district How Dr. Kuhar and his team redesigned the messaging strategy What visitors want to know about your destination How Cleveland Metroparks Zoo stands out from its competitors Projects that Dr. Kuhar and his team are currently working on Rebranding the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Dr. Christopher Kuhar is the Executive Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, where he manages the Zoo’s animal collection and oversees the daily operations. In Dr. Kuhar’s current role, he is leading the Cleveland zoo into a new chapter with an emphasis on conservation, education, and animal welfare. On top of the massive additions to infrastructure and exhibits that have already been completed, Dr. Kuhar and his team are changing the way that they talk about themselves to the public. Traditionally, zoos have always focused their marketing budget on getting people through the front gates. But there is amazing work happening behind the scenes and Dr. Kuhar is making an effort to weave it into the brand. What are You Doing to Make the World a Better Place? For the travel industry in general, there has been a major shift as far as what people are looking for when they travel; and there is a greater concern for the environments they are stepping into. The impact visitors have on the destinations they visit and the footprints they leave behind are out in the open, so brands like the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo have capitalized on opportunities to talk about the work they are doing. In polling data from the AZA, Dr. Kuhar and his team have gathered a significant amount of information about their visitors—and they found that the desire to see destination organizations making the world a better place is near the top of the list. That is something every DMO can leverage. How Do You Show Up in the World? Many guests at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo are completely unaware of the impact Dr. Kuhar and his team are making, so that was a major driver behind the new messaging. They wanted to highlight the conservation work they have been doing for the last twenty years and lead with their mission in every advertisement and every piece of content on social media. So far, this has increased awareness from 50% to 90% and it has even increased attendance from demographics that would normally be considered outliers. How your brand shows up in the world is directly correlated to a traveler’s decision to visit your destination. Mokolo, a 30-year-old male silverback gorilla at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, experienced some dramatic changes in his life last year, both good and bad. He lost one longtime partner, and gained two others. And the Metroparks Zoo’s scientists were in a unique position to evaluate what was going on with him. As our guest, biologist and primate behavior specialist Austin Leeds will explain, the zoo is in the midst of a groundbreaking research project. The study aims to use hormones to better understand gorilla behavior. These critically endangered animals are highly social. Gorillas form relationships with each other that can last a lifetime. But gorillas aren’t as outwardly demonstrative as other primates, like chimpanzees. That can make it challenging to interpret their actions and state of mind. So the zoo’s scientists have recently begun monitoring levels of the hormones oxytocin and cortisol in gorillas here in Cleveland and at other institutions, as a window into their behaviors. Oxytocin is important for bonding, while cortisol reflects stress. It’s part of the zoo’s ongoing efforts to improve conditions for the gorillas in its care, and to protect those remaining in the wild. That work also includes helping train scientists and conservation professionals in Rwanda – preparing them to serve on the front lines in the battle to save gorillas from extinction. Austin Leeds is earning his Ph.D. in biology from Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University, and holds bachelors and masters degrees in primate behavior. He’s a graduate research associate at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, where he conducts research, recruits and trains research volunteers and works closely with the zoo’s gorillas. Leeds is also a mentor for students in the Memoirs Program operated by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, the University of Rwanda and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, which we’ll talk more about during the show. You can find more information about these projects on our website, cmnh.org/Sauropodcast. Here’s our interview.
