The Harvard Study of Adult Development, often referred to as the Grant Study, is widely recognized as the longest-running, in-depth scientific study of adult life ever conducted. I recently published an episode I did with the director, Robert Waldinger. The results of the study have now famously shown us that what most fulfills us in life is relationships. Of course not just any relationships, but the truly valuable and significant relationships of our lives. It's proven very difficult to have such relationships, if we can't effectively communicate with others. And by effectively communicate, we mean to actually connect in a meaningful way. So in this episode I bring you Renée Marino. Renée is a renowned Broadway star, singing, acting, and dancing in West Side Story, Pretty Woman, and Jersey Boys. Her lead role in Jersey Boys caught the eye of famed actor Clint Eastwood who took her from the stage and cast her for the lead female role in his film, Jersey Boys. Renée's livelihood is communicating. She must connect with and move the audience, and she's a master. Following Clint's film, Renée turned her attention to the professional and personal world and is showing us the heart and skill of real communication. The kind that does just what Renée does on stage, on film, and in her personal life...truly connects us with others in a meaningful way that moves them to engage with us. I connected with Renée so much I had her come back and co-host a bunch of episodes with me, we co-presented at a speaking event together, and became good friends. Renée has culminated her methodology of communicating in her book, Becoming a Master Communicator: Balancing New School Technology with Old School Simplicity, which you can get anywhere and just search for Renée Marino and you'll find her everywhere. With the campaign of Barack Obama in 2007-2008, the U.S. saw a resurgence in interest in Nelson Mandela, with Americans projecting a parallel with our own first black president. You can almost hear the gears turning in Clint Eastwood's mind watching 2009's Invictus–hoping to goad Obama towards symbolic reconciliation rather than expropriative redistribution. We look at Obama's initial posturing and discuss whether or not he was doing the Mandela affect.Huge thanks to Isaac for guesting on this episode! In this episode of the show we are putting a bow on the February jaunt through 80s sci-fi dystopias with a John Carpenter double-header of Escape from New York and They Live. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Carpenter's love of westerns distilling into Escape, how Kurt Russell loved the character of Snake Plissken and based his performance on Clint Eastwood and how the movie has a scrappy feel of a prescient dystopia that took effort to create. We also talk about They Live and how its messaging has been thoroughly vindicated since its release, Roddy Piper as a stand-in for Kurt Russell, retro-futuristic production design of the world seen through the iconic sunglasses and much more!Tune in and enjoy!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsFeaturing: Campbell BurrowsHead over to uncutgemspodcast.com to find all of our archival episodes and more!Follow us on Twitter (@UncutGemsPod), IG (@UncutGemsPod) and Facebook (@UncutGemsPod)Buy us a coffee over at Ko-Fi.com (ko-fi.com/uncutgemspod)Subscribe to our Patreon! This week, the boys grabbed some beers and kept it positive while they fired off some mini-reviews before featuring a conversation about “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. As part of the random year generator series, 2004 was a great year for movies, with over 50 $100m movies and many likable ones. While “Eternal Sunshine” didn't gross in the top 70, it may be the year's greatest film. Props to Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman for giving Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet some juicy roles and incredibly shifty worlds! As for the mini-reviews, the boys can't speak highly enough of Gore Verbinski's “Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die”, starring Sam Rockwell, and the intense and captivating “If I Had Legs I'd Kick You”, and the Academy Award-nominated “It Was Just An Accident”. Logan (2017) Review kicks off this week's episode of Born to Watch, and boys… this is not your usual superhero movie.Whitey, Gow and Damo head into the wasteland of 2029 to talk about the final outing for Wolverine, and right from the start the big question is asked, is this actually a superhero movie at all… or is it a western wearing claws? After nearly two decades of Hugh Jackman playing Logan, the X-Men universe throws away the colourful costumes, the CGI sky beams and the multiverse nonsense, and replaces it with dust, silence and a dying hero who just wants it all to end. This week, the boys dive into: • Why Logan feels closer to a Clint Eastwood western than a Marvel film • The emotional weight of Professor X and Logan's relationship • Laura (X-23) stealing the movie without saying much at all • The brutality and why the R-rating actually matters • Whether this is the greatest superhero film ever madeWhitey argues that this is the natural evolution of comic book movies, a character study about regret and aging rather than saving the world. Gow admits he expected CGI chaos and instead got a real film. Damo questions the timeline, the X-Men continuity and whether the emotional ending works if it doesn't match the earlier movies. The discussion also covers how Logan was clearly inspired by classic westerns, especially Shane, and why the movie works best when it forgets it's part of a franchise entirely.Hugh Jackman delivers possibly his best performance as a broken warrior who no longer heals, drinks too much, hurts constantly and carries decades of guilt. Patrick Stewart's Professor X adds heart and tragedy, while the road-trip structure slowly turns the film into something surprisingly intimate. And then… there's the ending. No big sky battle. No final speech.Just consequences. The boys debate whether Logan's death lands emotionally, if Laura is the future of the character, and why this film changed how studios approached superhero movies afterwards. Is Logan the peak of comic-book cinema? Or just a really good western accidentally starring a superhero?JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Logan the best comic book movie ever made? Does the R-rating improve superhero films? People's impression of cowboys is largely due to Hollywood. Actors like John Wayne, Gary Cooper and Clint Eastwood cemented the image of the rugged, handsome, White cowboys throughout their films. While it made for good movies, it's not entirely accurate to how the West looked at the time. There's plenty of history on vaqueros, or Mexican cowboys, in the West, but one demographic left their prints on Arizona history with their stories vastly untold: Black cowboys This week on Valley 101, we answer the question: Were there Black cowboys in Arizona? Before we watch the ACTUAL Iwo Jima-centered Clint Eastwood movie on the list, let's gather some context by watching this one first! It's 2006's Flags of our Fathers, a movie that is NOT in fact a patriotic rabble-rousing picture. Step softly into the fog‑shrouded marshes of classic Hammer Horror as Scary Spirits raises a ghostly toast to two unforgettable icons. In this chilling new episode, we commemorate the birthdays of Oliver Reed and Yvonne Romain with a reverent yet spirited review of the 1962 Hammer masterpiece Captain Clegg, also known in the United States as Night Creatures. With measured wit and scholarly delight, hosts Karen and Greg explore the film's brooding atmosphere, secret identities, and macabre menace—unearthing why this nautical nightmare remains a jewel in the Hammer crown. As the lantern light flickers and the tide rolls in, they sip a specially crafted “Scarecrow” cocktail, perfectly themed to the film's eerie legend and sinister charm. If you cherish classic horror films, Hammer Studios, 1960s Gothic cinema, or the dark elegance of Britain's golden age of fright, this episode beckons you closer. Join us, if you dare, for an evening of shadows, spirits, and timeless terror—where the past refuses to stay buried. Scarecrow Cocktail • 4 parts coffee-rum (or in emergency, ordinary white rum)• 3 parts Kahlúa• 2 parts lime juice• 8 parts pineapple juice• 4 parts orange juice Instructions: Shake ingredients with ice and strain into highball glass, add some ice. If possible, serve with actual straw. Source: superherococktails.com A Brief Synopsis: When a captain arrives on an English coastal town to investigate reports of smuggling, he ends up with much more to deal with, including marsh phantoms and a suspicious vicar. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: Karen gives us some history of alcohol smuggling in 1776. Karen also references the 1968 Clint Eastwood film “Hang ‘Em High”. Greg reads a passage from the book “Hammer Glamour: Classic Images From the Archive of Hammer Films” by Marcus Hearn. A raucous high school basketball broadcast from Fairfield, Iowa, featuring celebrity referees (Woody Harrelson, Keanu Reeves, Clint Eastwood) and lively, off-the-cuff commentary. The episode follows Mount Pleasant's dominant performance, standout plays by Ronnie Howard and others, local sponsors, and plenty of chaotic banter from the sideline.
After Memegate went viral on Friday, the usual battle in our virtual Civil War raged on. I had this exchange on X and was answered by Conor Friedersdorf:To Trump's enemies, this was yet another crisis not to go to waste. It was the perfect way to reel back some of those Nicki Minaj supporters who might be thinking about flipping to Trump. The midterms are coming up, and they're desperately worried about losing votes of yet another necessary demographic. That's all it's been for ten years now, emotional blackmail to convince us that Trump really is that bad while offering nothing in return. They have addressed nothing. They have fixed nothing. They have offered only a fanatical cult and a rigid ideology of an oppressor/oppressed mindset, and then demanded everyone go along with it, or they're racists, homophobes, bigots, Nazis. Here is a TikTocker:The Democrats and the ruling class that props up their collapsing empire are in a hell of their own making. They never addressed the people's needs after their 2016 loss because that would mean acknowledging their own failures. Instead, they made Trump the enemy and went to war, a war they're losing. All they ever had to do was offer the people something better, but they couldn't even do that because what they want is their utopia back, the one I helped build, and the one I escaped once it became a Doomsday Cult. Had they left him alone, just allowed his four years to play out like a normal president, as opposed to Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden attempting to frame him as a Russian asset, the Demcorats impeaching him, the legacy media and all of culture taking a side against him and his supporters, maybe he would have been a one-term president and gone back to a life of golfing at Mar-a-Lago.But instead, they whipped up a World War II fantasy in which they were “brave resistance” fighting an existential crisis that threatened to topple America and the world, with very little evidence to show for it, then or now. That made it oh so easy to blame Trump and not themselves.I look now at those still trapped inside the Doomsday Cult that I escaped, and I can't believe the level of delusion. Look at this post by musician Jack White, which is liked by Jimmy Kimmel. So let me make it perfectly clear for those who might be wondering after the scandal du jour: I don't regret my vote for Trump and I never will, because even now, the Left is worse. Their reaction is worse. They are never telling the truth, not to us, not to themselves. All they have to sell is hate and fear. They aren't getting less crazy and more sane. They are not becoming kinder, more tolerant, and more forgiving. They still have no idea what democracy means - spoiler alert: you can't always get what you want. They have never learned the lesson in ten years. They still believe that winning their war is forcing all of us to go along with their distorted version of reality. And add that to these crazy people on TikTok, and you start to see that the reason Trump won is that he's closer to normal than they are. They just don't realize that they're the problem. Their totalitarian tendencies left over from 2020 never fully died because there was never any accountability in the mainstream. Remember that crowd that swarmed that woman and demanded she raise her fist for Black Lives Matter:Here are a bunch of crazy women at a Core Power Yoga studio in Minneapolis doing the same thing: go along with us or else. That same autonomous zone that was erected in 2020:Well, that's back too, only this time the police got rid of it much quicker, knowing Tom Homan and Trump won't stand for it.Do they really expect us to vote for these psychopaths? Put them back in power? And why, because Trump accidentally shared a meme with a racist image of the Obamas at the end of it? Sorry, they have to deal with the fanatics who have swallowed up their party first because they are still too erratic and unhinged to lead this country. What are they going to do with all of us? With Trump? Throw us into re-education camps? Gulags? Shoot us outright?GET TRUMPThe Left's 10-year campaign to get Trump is like watching Yosemite Sam go after Bugs Bunny. They always think they're just seconds away from catching him at long last. They believe deeply in their mission to destroy Trump, just as Yosemite Sam does. It's just that we see Bugs Bunny a little differently. Whatever else Trump is, he's not the guy they say he is, and for that, they will always be one step behind, swinging and missing. I didn't get that until I found my way out. As someone who got online 30 years ago, I wasn't ready for the effects of the feedback loop on my brain, and I don't think most people on the Left even realized they were living inside a reality-distorting machine. I had to watch Trump videos on my own, get to know him and his supporters, and humanize them. I found that I unexpectedly empathized with Trump. It wasn't just that I could finally see the real human being, but because I, too, had been demonized and attacked for being a person I knew I wasn't. All I had to do was walk in the shoes of his supporters to see what monsters they really are on the Left. The more they attack Trump, the more his supporters rally to protect him, not just because they have been thrown away like human garbage by these people, but also because they look at Trump and they see a flawed hero, someone who doesn't always get it right, who makes big mistakes, who is anything but perfect. But he's also someone who fights for them. Our culture used to understand flawed heroes because they were in so many movies and books.Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark:Humphrey Bogart Casablanca.Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven. What counts isn't their past or their goodness or their purity, but their actions. We all treated Obama like a religious figure, and still do, which partly explains the over-reaction by the Left. It's blasphemy to mock Obama, whereas it's an American pastime to mock Trump. Today's Left seems to desire perfection from cradle to grave and is unforgiving of flawed heroes, especially white men. But Trump is a great character of history, a living legend. They just got the story wrong. Here is Dominic Sandbrook on Triggernometry:Trump is a hero to so many of us, not because he's perfect or “good” but because he is a fighter who got the dirty job done and saved the day. Crimes against humanityI asked Conor Friedersdorf the same question I would put to any Democrat. Can you name something — one thing — Trump has done that is worse than sterilizing children who can't consent? Destroying their bodies with medical experiments? Never having the courage to stand up to the cult? Now that the lawsuits are coming, and prominent groups like the AMA are openly opposing gender transition treatments for minors, the Democrats will pretend they were always against it. But we can't let them do that. The Democrats have not just supported it every step of the way; they have actively blocked any action taken to safeguard children. It took the Republicans standing on the right history yet again, as they did during the Civil War, to push this thing through, and it took the election of Donald Trump to finally bring the hammer down.Only Trump, in his plain-spoken, flawed hero kind of way, had the guts to say it out loud, without fear, and that gave others more courage to fight back. But Trump wasn't only saying things. He was doing things. And before long, the dominoes began to fall. What could Trump have done that even comes close to what has happened to kids at the hands of 15 years of Democrat rule? What's worse? Saying “Quiet, Piggy” to a reporter? Tearing down the East Wing to build a ballroom? The Kennedy Center? An offensive meme?Their climate of fear and culture of silence made it too dangerous to take a brave stand, which is why it was left to the brave men and women who risked their lives and careers to put a stop to the madness once and for all.And along with their ever-increasing authoritarianism, we'd be the UK if Elon Musk had not bought Twitter and turned it into X, and if Trump hadn't won. Here is Graham Linehan speaking in Congress:So when people say, “You could have picked a different Republican, but you picked Trump,” I flip it back onto them. Tell me what Trump has done, just one thing, that comes close to this, and be prepared to answer it 20 years from now, because I promise to hang it around your necks like a dead cat for as long as I live. Here is a TikToker:On this alone, I would have voted for any Republican. I'd always say, “I am not a Trump supporter but…” Then, they raided Mar-a-Lago, and when they indicted him, when they tried to throw him in jail, that made me a Trump supporter. That made me the Braveheart meme. There won't be any Sister Souljah moments in this Democratic Party.I have been waiting for six years for the Democrats to snap out of it and come back to reality. That day never came. If anything, they're crazier now than they've ever been. Anyone who wants their votes has no choice but to go along with it. The Democrats can't snap out of it even if they wanted to. Gavin Newsom can't sell anything but hate and hysteria. Even Jon Ossoff, a guy I once supported and fought for, must sell the same thing because they have nothing else. They have given people like me no path back because the only option is going back to the Doomsday Cult that insists I call Trump and the other half of America racists when I know that it isn't true. A cult that demands I buy into the oppressor/oppressed mandate, and demands I look the other way as they indoctrinate our kids and destroy every great thing this country ever built.I could have been one of those who hovered reluctantly in the middle and held my nose and voted for Trump. Maybe I could have salvaged some of my reputation such that when I died, they might say good things about me instead of dancing on my grave.I could have spent my time apologizing, trying to rebuild my liberal cred by denouncing Trump and throwing him under the bus, like Marjorie Taylor Greene. I could have used that to boost myself, every time another wave of mass hysteria pulsed through our society, because see, Trump IS a fascist! And see, Trump is a dictator and a racist! You were right all along! But that would not be the truth. Trump is only in power because we put him there. We wanted someone tough enough, strong enough, and persistent enough to never back down, never shrink back, never hand power to those who want to put half the country in re-education camps. The Democrats might still be the ruling class, dominating most institutions, all of our culture, and the legacy media, but the rest of us have Trump, our last best hope to fight for the country we love. And if some days it feels like trying to keep from falling overboard or getting seasick, most of us knew what we were getting into when we climbed aboard. We got what we voted for. So no, I don't regret my vote for Trump. I only regret I didn't see it sooner. I didn't see what we were building, the damage we would cause, or where it was headed until it was too late. // This is a public episode. A Raimi Movie™ through and through, the film pays loving homage to revisionist entries in the western canon like Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West and Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter, but also sacrifices some of the thematic potential of the genre's Golden Era in favor of shoot-em-up schlock and a thoroughly fun time with a knockout cast of established and up-and-coming greats including Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, and a fresh-faced Leonardo DiCaprio. We begin with a discussion of the Western, its persistence and malleability as genre, and where Raimi's vision falls in the lineage of America's mythmaking. Then, we examine the political limitations of The Quick and the Dead, its topicality as a piece of pop filmmaking, and its reduction of symbolism to mere signifier. Finally, we discuss Sharon Stone as actor and producer, and how the film offers her an oppotunity to explore a character that runs counter to the archetypal femme fatale roles she had made her career playing thus far.Elsewhere, we briefly discuss another great 00s thriller in our ongoing watch project - David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway and share some thoughts on the new Isaac Chotiner interview with The Quick and the Dead and Melania DP Dante Spinotti.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

One of Clint Eastwood’s trademark phrases from a Dirty Harry movie was, “Do you feel lucky?” The four NFL second round divisional playoff games this Saturday and Sunday have given yours truly a really tough time in trying to determine the winners. Some teams haven’t participated in the playoffs very much in recent years. Sunday’s games may have snow affecting play (Yes!). The people who follow the Las Vegas prognosticators believe the odds favor these winners (home teams in BOLD): Saturday, January 17: Denver (by 1.5 points) over Buffalo Seattle (by 7 points) over San Francisco Sunday, January 18: New England (by 3 points) over Houston Los Angeles Rams (by 4.5 points) over Chicago These are some very tough games to predict this week. Let’s review each game and pick a winner! Saturday – 3:30PM (CST) on CBS – #6 AFC seed Buffalo Bills at #1 Denver Broncos Coach Sean Payton’s three-year turnaround of the Denver Broncos has been nothing short of miraculous. The Broncos had six consecutive losing seasons before the former New Orleans Saints coach was hired beginning with the 2023 season. Payton’s first year 8-9 record was followed-up with 10-7 in 2024 (and a first round playoff loss) and a league leading 14-3 record this season. The Denver Broncos have done it with a reliable defense, a gritty young quarterback, and a large dose of timely good fortune. Having the second-rated NFL defense has kept Denver close in nearly every game this season. The Broncos give up only 18 points per game and allowed 30 or more points on just two occasions in 17 regular season contests. Quarterback Bo Nix is completing his second NFL season. Having Sean Payton (a former college quarterback and professional tutor to Saints’ legend Drew Brees) as Bo Nix’ mentor has created a new dynamic duo in Denver. Nix was rated the #8 QB in the league this season with 25 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. It is his uncanny ability to play at his best when the game is on the line which endeared him to Broncos’ fans. Meanwhile, Buffalo came into this season as a Super Bowl favorite. The Bills have lost three straight playoff games to Kansas City in recent years. With the Chiefs’ collapse this fall, the door was left open for a seasoned playoff contender like Buffalo to make a late-season run to the league’s title game. Reigning NFL MVP quarterback Josh Allen had another good season. However, his stats are nearly identical to Denver’s Bo Nix (25 TD’s and 10 interceptions). Buffalo’s offense was much more productive than Denver. The Bills were #4 in scoring offense with 28.4 points per game. Compare that to Denver’s 23.6 ppg. Buffalo’s defense, though, allowed about 22 points per game (#12 in the NFL) which is four points more than Denver’s stingy 18 ppg. X-factor: Buffalo’s playoff experience pays off in a last second victory. My prediction: Buffalo 31, Denver 28 Saturday – 7PM on FOX – #6 NFC seed San Francisco 49ers at #1 Seattle Seahawks The 49ers are one of three NFC West teams still playing among the four NFC playoff competitors this weekend. Coach Mike Shanahan’s walking wounded group of 49ers has found a way to overcome a significant number of injuries to key players all season. The latest casualty was All-Pro tight end George Kittle. He is out for the season after suffering an Achilles injury last weekend. Quarterback Brock Purdy only played in nine regular season games due to injury. Since returning to the 49ers starting line-up on November 16, Purdy led San Francisco to seven wins in the team’s last eight games. He has been clutch coming down the stretch. The league’s 13th rated defense has been just good enough (allowing nearly 22 points per game) to keep San Francisco in most of its games this season. Seattle is the host team for Saturday night’s game. The Seahawks are flying high with the NFC’s #1 seed, a 14-3 regular season record, the #1 defense in the NFC, and the noisiest home stadium crowd in the NFL. That’s the good news. Second-year coach Mike MacDonald (not related to the pop singer with the same name) was the former defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. This 38-year old coach brought along his tough-minded defensive schemes to Seattle. The Hawks allow only 17 points per game. Seattle’s offense has been led by journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold. He is playing for his fifth team in eight NFL seasons. Darnold passed for 25 touchdowns this fall but has given up 14 interceptions. His history of turnovers while playing in pressure football games has Seahawks fans on pins and needles already. An oblique injury has been troubling Darnold this week and may limit his mobility on Saturday night. X-factor: Seattle must not count on Sam Darnold to rally the team from behind in this game. My prediction: San Francisco 27, Seattle 21 Sunday – 2PM on ABC & ESPN – #5 AFC seed Houston Texans at #2 New England Houston’s fourth quarter ambush of Pittsburgh on Monday night helped finalize the decision by Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin to retire after 19 NFL seasons. The Houston Texans’ defense has lifted this team to ten consecutive wins coming into this weekend (including Monday night’s 30-6 mauling of the Steelers in Pittsburgh). Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryans (a former linebacker for the team) has created the NFL’s #1 overall defensive unit giving up just 277 total yards per game. The Houston offense has been inconsistent from week to week. Third-year quarterback C.J. Stroud passed for 20 touchdowns with nine interceptions but looked shaky at Pittsburgh on Monday night. Houston’s All-Pro wide receiver Nico Collins suffered a concussion in Pittsburgh and has been ruled out of this Sunday’s game at New England. The home team New England Patriots have returned to the playoffs led by its first year coach Mike Vrabel. The former Patriots’ All-Pro linebacker won three Super Bowl rings during his playing days in New England. As a coach, he has led the Patriots’ turnaround from 4-13 in 2024 into a 14-3 Super Bowl contender in just one season. Second year quarterback Drake Maye has proven worthy of his first round draft selection in 2024. Passing for 31 touchdowns with just eight interceptions in the regular season was an amazing feat for a second year NFL quarterback. He spread the ball around as ten different players caught touchdown passes this season. New England’s defense and special teams have been top notch this season as well. X-factor: Snow (!!!) and the absence of Houston wide receiver Nico Collins My prediction: New England 24, Houston 14 Sunday – 5:30PM on NBC – #5 NFC seed Los Angeles Rams at #2 Chicago Bears Los Angeles was considered a Super Bowl favorite this season. Chicago Bears fans would have been thrilled just to make the NFL playoffs. These two teams will meet in frozen Soldier Field in Chicago as the sun sets with temperatures below 20 degrees and snow likely during the game. The Rams are guided by ageless (soon-to-turn 38 years old) veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. He leads the NFL’s #1 offense which scores nearly 31 points per game. The Rams’ defense isn’t shabby, either. They give up 20 points on average. Los Angeles has won several high scoring shoot-out games in the past month leading into the playoffs. The frigid weather conditions expected in Chicago on Sunday evening are not favorable to the Rams’ high scoring offense. Chicago flipped from 5-12 one year ago to a surprising 11-6 record under rookie head coach Ben Johnson. Detroit’s former offensive coordinator brought his playbook filled with exciting plays to Chicago. Second year quarterback Caleb Williams (27 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions) has blossomed under Coach Johnson’s tutelage. The Bears’ defense was the most opportunistic in the NFL this season. A total of 33 turnovers (23 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries) gave Chicago’s offense great field position and scoring opportunities. X-factor: Frigid weather and snow will hamper both teams. Turnovers will determine the winner. My prediction: Los Angeles Rams 28, Chicago 20 The post NFL Divisional Playoff games are Difficult to Predict appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.
In this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback Podcast, host Tim Williams and co-hosts Ben Carpenter, Chris McMichen, and Nicholas Pepin dive into the classic comedy film 'The Naked Gun.' They discuss their first impressions, memorable scenes, character analyses, and the film's impact on comedy. The conversation also touches on trivia, behind-the-scenes insights, and the film's rewatchability. The hosts share their thoughts on the reboot and reflect on the legacy of the film, highlighting its humor and iconic moments. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode:The device that compelled characters to accept commands to kill someone is similar to what the parasitic life forms in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" did.Leslie Nielsen's line about shooting the Shakespeare in the Park performers is a close parody of a line Clint Eastwood said about shooting a rapist in "Dirty Harry".In 1988, The Naked Gun, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and A Fish Called Wanda formed an accidental "steamroller trilogy." Despite their differences, all three classic comedies released that year feature a character getting flattened by a steamroller.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDBhttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/71895/18-fun-facts-about-naked-gunhttps://www.watchmojo.com/articles/top-10-hilarious-facts-about-the-naked-gun-1988Some sections were composed by ChatGPTWe'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! In the highly anticipated 2026 Celebrity Deadpool Draft, Uncle Eddie, Billy, Joe, and Ricky make their selections for the Fatal Five plus their Long Shot. The draft features perennial favorites like Dick Van Dyke and Clint Eastwood, while Ricky and Eddie clash over their political long shots. This week, the boys celebrate their 300th episode with Zack Snyder's “300”! My guest today is Josh Panko, President of Leaf Trading Cards. Josh's journey in the sports card industry started at age seven when he opened a card shop in his basement. That childhood passion turned into a remarkable career that's taken him from working at card shops as a teenager, to Upper Deck's product development team, to now leading one of the most creative trading card companies in the industry. What I love about Josh's story is how he built his career by working every angle of the business—retail, distribution, manufacturing, customer service. He learned the entire supply chain, which gave him a perspective that few in the industry have. And today, at Leaf, he's creating some of the most innovative products in the space, from on-card autographs of Hollywood legends like Al Pacino and Clint Eastwood, to unique sports card concepts that major licensed manufacturers can't touch. This conversation is packed with wisdom on hard work, taking initiative, building relationships, and staying humble even as you climb the ladder. Whether you're in the trading card world or not, Josh's lessons on career development and leadership are gold. In this episode we discuss: Why working every level of your industry early in your career creates an unfair advantage - and how Josh's experience in retail, distribution, and manufacturing shaped his leadership at Leaf The handwritten letter strategy that landed Josh his dream job at Upper Deck - and why his father's unconventional advice to FedEx overnight it to the CEO actually worked How being kind to everyone (especially people outside your department) can fast-track your career - Josh's finance department friendships got his projects prioritized over senior colleagues Why Josh would rather employees take initiative and make mistakes than wait for permission - and the Shawshank Redemption lesson about not asking to go to the bathroom The "harder you work, the luckier you get" philosophy - and how Josh turned clocking out at 5pm then returning to work unpaid into career-defining opportunities Get my free Career Pivot Playbook to help navigate your next move: www.omaid.me/newsletter Follow me on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/omaidhomayun/
In this amusing re-edit, my beyond talented guests sum up some of the most bizarre, whacky, infamous and sometimes puzzling movies in Clint Eastwood's filmography. International Law in TattersShould we be surprised by the decision of President Trump to kidnap President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores? Should we be shocked by his claim that the US will now administer Venezuela or that US Oil companies will manage Venezuela's huge oil reserves? And what of his threats against Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Greenland, Nigeria and others? The historical reality is that we have seen all of this before. The most brazen example this century was the invasion of Iraq in 2003, under the pretext of the non-existent weapons of mass destruction. The truth then was that US and British interests were primarily concerned with the control of Iraq's oil. The result was a million Iraqi dead and a region torn apart by the subsequent political instability. International law was flagrantly broken. Torture and a brutal occupation followed. The Fellow in the Big PictureOver the Christmas break I watched more television than I do at any other time. Regular readers will know that I'm more of a radio man. RTE Radio, Raidió na Gaeltachta, Raidió Fáilte, Radio Ulster. I listen to these every day. But I like westerns. And there is always a ton of westerns to be seen on television over the Christmas period. Some are old ones featuring Audie Murphy, Gene Audrey, Alan Ladd, John Wayne, Maureen O Hara and the likes. TG4 usually has a good selection of these. They also show a lot of movies featuring Clint Eastwood. I like his films. And not just the westerns. Although he first came to our attention in Ballymurphy with Rawhide. Unforgiven was the film of choice this Nollaig with Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman, all in starring roles. And it was followed by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Irish government should be ashamed2026 began for the people of the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian Occupied Territories with more Israeli attacks by land and sea and air; winter storms that have added to the enormous hardship of people trying to survive in flimsy tents; and the denial of appropriate humanitarian aid.2025 also ended with Israel having killed nearly half of all those journalists killed last year. Reporters Without Borders recorded that 29 reporters were killed by Israeli forces making Israel “the worst enemy of journalists.”
For the past forty plus years Mike Pniewski has been working with the likes of Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Cruise and the list goes on and on. We promise you, you've seen him if you watch TV or movies. Mike is also helping launch the Annabelle Ham Project, which aims to raise awareness and educate others about epilepsy. Through Annabelle’s eyes, her heart and her voice, we are committed to breaking the stigma surrounding epilepsy, uplifting those affected, and creating a world where no one faces this disease alone.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, the boys drink some whiskey and head to 1960 to discuss the less famous slasher movie of the year, “Peeping Tom”! Directed by Michael Powell, this film was a major inspiration for Martin Scorsese and a terror to the people of England, leading to its removal from theaters after only 5 days. Unlike “Psycho”, it was subsequently banned from many other countries… yet today, this movie feels like a tone poem of modern culture. We give you a 1960 year-in-review and discuss. linktr.ee/theloveofcinema - Check out our YouTube page! Our phone number is 646-484-9298.
