Public/Private is Gail's memoir about her life with famous producer/director Joe Papp as they founded the Public Theater in NYC. Over their 26-year relationship, Gail and Joe established a legendary partnership that built the famous theatrical institution. In her memoir, Gail gives you an inside look at the early years of the Public when plays such as A Chorus Line were just starting and then little-known actors were making their way in show business. Gail and Joe's production genius was responsible for an extraordinary body of work that launched the careers of dozens of actors, including James Earl Jones, Colleen Dewhurst, Gloria Foster, Morgan Freeman, Raúl Juliá, Kevin Kline, Mandy Patinkin, George C. Scott, Martin Sheen, Meryl Streep, and Diane Venora, all of whom make an appearance in the book.Opening in the early Sixties, Gail's narrative spans the years she and Joe worked, then lived together until Joe's death in 1991. During most of that time, Gail was the Developer of New Plays and Musicals at The Public while it staged hundreds of productions, ranging from the free Shakespeare in Central Park series to new plays, such as Ntozake Shange's for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, and musicals like Hair and A Chorus Line. Gail Papp paints a comprehensive picture of the ways that The Public was driven by Joe's ambition to create a democratic theater whose artists and audiences would reflect the city's population. Also highlighted are unfamiliar aspects of his many battles with the establishment, from tilts with Robert Moses to theater critics the scourge of AIDS, its impact on the many friends, family and colleagues close to Joe and Gail, and the toll it exacted on Joe's son, Tony.At a time when America remains divided over issues of equality, identity, and freedom of expression, Public/Private is an important chronicle of how The Public Theater became a transformative beacon for social change and of the couple who created it.

Barbara Feldon Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson The best? Certainly none better. I'm not sure anyone has ever exceeded my very high expectations greater than Barbara Feldon did this day. As much as I admired and adored Get Smart's Agent 99 for her sophistication, intelligence, knowingness, sly, perfectly delivered humor, demure yet smoldering sexiness, and downright gorgeousness… Barbara is all that, and a truckload of Cheetos. It was so overwhelmingly powerful and thrilling to deep dive with this wise, self-effacing, self-aware, thoughtful, beyond-imagining age-defying beauty, I was filled to the brim with emotion, electricity, excitement, and enlightenment. I got answers to questions I've been seeking for years, and I just used more adjectives than I did in my entire novel. That's what Barbara's done to me. In the middle of her unputdownable just-dropped memoir, Getting Smarter, I had intended to speedread it but found I couldn't skip a word, and I can't wait to finish these liner notes so I can return to it and find out how this woman who played a spy, thought she was married to one, a sexy Frenchman named Lucien (or was he), long before she donned his real-life trench coat on TV. Their more dramatic than fiction love story will make a spectacular streaming series someday soonish, I have little doubt. Of course, we talked Don Adams, Mel Brooks, Buck Henry, and the genius that was Get Smart... how she got it, what led her there––that sexy commercial she purred through, Colleen Dewhurst, George C Scott, The Man From Uncle, what the actual experience was for her, the real rapport between her and Don, and how it shifted 20 years later, Dean Martin––swoon, Laugh-in, and writing––how as a tool it saves and evolves her and how it's become her life's work. How love has shaped her life and her work. An hour and a half of Barbara was simply not enough. I was so fired up, after the show, I called to say a quick thank you and we ended up chatting for another half hour. She's such a warm and generous soul. It was an absolute love fan fest with someone I feel like I've known forever and hope I will. Enough! Back to the cone of silence for me to finish reading Getting Smarter. If you wanna get smarter, hit this bit.ly/3FKjljg and jump into Barbara's beautifully written, as exciting as a spy novel, memoir. As much as I loved and looked up to Agent 99 as a girl, I adore Barbara Feldon even more. Please don't miss this one. Wow, what a woman! We got Hollywood royalty on the show--this week Kate Burton is here! You Might Know Her From Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Hedda Gabler, The Elephant Man, Company, and Big Trouble in Little China. Kate talked about how Shonda Rhimes and the soap world of Shondaland opened up doors for her career with a newfound zeitgeist-y fame. She brought us to tears talking about being on Broadway (in two shows) right after 9/11 and rallying with the theatre community to let the world know New York was still here. On today's show, we sit down with Bill Largess, the Artistic Director of the Washington Stage Guild. Bill also is an Adjunct Professor of Theater at George Washington University and a very generous sponsor of Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis MD.  Bill was first impacted by mentorship by the example of his father, George Largess. Bill's father was a 1939 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a Commander in the Navy. In high school his mentor was Micheal Lewis and later in college Bill was mentored by Father Gilbert Hartke.   Bill is motivated by a passage in the bible, Matthew 6 25-27.   25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And also by the following passage by Colleen Dewhurst a great Canadian- American actress:   "Life may be a mess: You may have a hundred crises forcing their way into your mind and your heart. But--and I stress this--the theatre and the person you bring to the theatre must be pure and clear and ready only for the work at hand. Your fellow actors, the stage manager, the dresser--they don't need to know the drama you have at home or in your life. Pour it all into the performance. Blow away the audience with your intensity, but don't alienate or alarm your coworkers with the diary of your life. And the theatre becomes therapy. So does the commute to the theatre. Just wash it all away, store it, command it to sit and be still. You'll work a lot of it out in the performance, so that by the time you face down the problem at home, it's smaller and it knows its place, and it knows that you've been made stronger by giving to others, by prioritizing, by doing the right thing."
