For this variant episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester turn once again to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to discuss the storytelling, characterization, and creative twists on the monomyth in Loki, the six-episode Disney+ series which recently concluded. In addition to discussing the character arcs of the core cast – Loki, Sylvie, Mobius, and Renslayer – we delve into the weighty themes and significant philosophical ideas underlying the series. We offer high praise for the successful collaboration of director Kate Herron and head writer Michael Waldron, who is poised to write the screenplay for the previously announced Star Wars movie being produced by MCU guru Kevin Feige. Loki certainly benefits from a second watch, which makes even more apparent the clever writing and honed storytelling in the series. Loki is trapped in The Void and it's up to Sylvie -- and a host of other Lokis -- to save him on this Easter egg packed episode, "Journey Into Mystery." After getting pruned by the TVA, Loki teams up with Kid Loki, Classic Loki, Boastful Loki and Alligator Loki to try and escape villainous cloud Alioth. Meanwhile, Sylvie teams up with Ravonna Renslayer, though the alliance is short lived. And a climactic battle helps set up the season finale... From the Thanos-copter, to Frog Thor, to all the references to Kang (and Dr. Doom??) we break it all down. SUBSCRIBE TO MARVELVISION ON ITUNES, ANDROID, SPOTIFY, STITCHER, OR RSS. We are so legitiamately thrilled to announced our guest for this episode: Chris Gethard. In addition to being an author, comedian, creator of the hit podcast Beautiful/Anonymous and host of the third biggest show on his own twitch network Planet Scum, Chris did improv with the Milksops at the UCB Theater for like 100 years. So we talk forever. Also, by the way, Gethard comes onto the podcast to talk about the ingenious, delightful, thrilling arc: FROG THOR. In the middle of Walt Simonson's legendary run on Thor in the mid-1980s, the Thunder God gets turned into a frog, a storyline that polarized readers who either loved it or hated it. Put us in the "loved it" camp. We get into many topics with Gethard: how he's a fan of this podcast, his love of Mark Gruenwald Captain America run, why the X-Men resonate so much, our mutual friend Jesse Falcon's apartment, the death of the Executioner and you know we get a little improv talk in there, too. This is a long one, and we were restraining ourselves to only talk for 2 hours!!! -- SHOW INFORMATION Twitter: @ScrewItComics Instagram: @ScrewItComics Email: ScrewItSpidey@gmail.com Subscribe: Apple Podcasts Subscribe: Spotify
In which we discuss the much-celebrated work of Walter Simonson on Thor during the 80s! It is still resonant today as even now, people anticipate an appearance from Beta Ray Bill in the MCU. Will he appear? I don't know, that's not our purview! We will, however, be gushing over a mutual favorite run of comics. This is episode...6? Already? Norse gods, how time does fly. He’s the best at what he does, and what he does is stream simul-dubs straight from Japan. John, Aldo, and Stephen discuss the Wolverine mini-series from 1982 and try to determine exactly how weeby our pal Logan actually is. Turns out everyone has Frank Miller opinions. Also: who’s your favorite Thor? Is it Ultimate Thor, Mighty Thor, Thor the Unworthy, Throg the Frog Thor, Thrr the... wolf? Badger? There are a lot of these Thors, aren’t there? It’s the Secret War tie-in, Thors!
If we’ve learned anything from this show, the best way to make a cool Thor comic is to take a non-human character and put Thor clothes on it. It worked with Frog Thor and it totally works with Beta Ray Bill. We read his 1st appearance at the beginning of Walt Simonson’s classic run from the mid 80s in issues 337-343. Thor also fights a dragon and changes his secret identity situation from unnecessary to still unnecessary. Next Time: Kingdom Come
