Clarence Maclin spent 15 years as an inmate in Sing Sing Correctional Facility, one of America's most notorious prisons. Now, he plays himself opposite Colman Domingo and Paul Raci in “Sing Sing,” a new film based on his experience in prison and the transformative theatre program that changed his life. Last year, around the film's release, Clarence joined Tom to share what it was like stepping back into a prison uniform, how acting helped him find his voice and his purpose, and how he hopes the film will change what you think you know about prisoners.
Christina is joined by actor and advocate Sean 'Dino' Johnson. Mr. Johnson stars in 'Sing Sing' (also starring Colman Domingo and Paul Raci) which follows a theater production at the maximum security prison Sing Sing. A moving film about the power of art. The film is based on Mr. Johnson's actual RTA participation (Rehabilitation Through The Arts Program). He discovered the theater program while incarcerated at Sing Sing serving a 15 year prison sentence. Mr. Johnson talks to Christina about his personal experiences, the emotional journey making the film, his work as an advocate for at risk youth and much more. Learn more about your ad choices. Based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, the film centers on a group of inmates involved in the creation of theatrical stage shows through the program. It stars professional actors Colman Domingo and Paul Raci, alongside many real-life formerly incarcerated men who were themselves alumni of the program during their incarceration, including Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin and Jon-Adrian "JJ" Velazquez. The film premiered in the Special Presentations program at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. It was released by A24 in the United States on July 12, 2024.

Dave jokes that it's Megan's big week on Spoilerpiece: She saw all three movies on the docket! First, she fills Evan and Dave in on DOCTOR JEKYLL (2:27), a contemporary update of Robert Louis Stephenson's classic novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with Eddie Izzard as Dr. Nina Jekyll (good) and Rachel Hyde (bad). Is it the gothic horror it's laid out to be in the press notes? Or something different? Then Megan talks about SING SING (14:14), a drama based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. Megan loved Colman Domingo's and Paul Raci's performances, and has heaps of praise for the movie. Finally, everyone saw PEAK SEASON (24:48), a comic drama about the bond a burned out New Yorker makes with her fishing guide on a trip to Montana. We all loved it. Over on Patreon, Evan and Dave talk about Robert Altman's 3 WOMEN, which stars Shelley Duvall, who left us in early July.
Paul Raci, Oscar nominated for his role in 2019's 'Sound Of Metal', is back on Pop Culture Confidential to talk about his phenomenal new film 'Sing Sing'! The film centers on a group of inmates putting up a play at the maximum security prison Sing Sing through (the real) Rehabilitation Through the Arts Program. Mr. Raci, who plays theater director & group leader Brent Buell, stars alongside recent Oscar nominee Colman Domingo. The film also stars many formerly incarcerated men who were themselves real alumni of the program during their years in prison. The film is directed by Greg Kwedar who co-wrote the screenplay with Clint Bentley. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In a year where actor Colman Domingo was honored for his work in “Rustin,” playing its titular character, he brings viewers another dynamic performance in “Sing Sing.” The film takes place in New York's Sing Sing Correctional Facility, following a group of inmates looking to stage their own production. Alongside Domingo, the film has a fellow Academy Award nominee in Paul Raci, but also former alums of the program like Sean San José and Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin. The film's unique approach of casting formerly incarcerated folks is also paired with the fact that the entire cast was paid the same rate, all in service to the “community-based” approach the film's production took on. To discuss what went into the making of the film, and his role as “Divine G” in the film, is actor Colman Domingo. “Sing Sing” is out now in Select Theaters and in Wide Release on August 2.
Based on a true story, ‘Sing Sing' centers the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison in upstate New York. Incarcerated for a crime he did not commit, Divine G (played by Colman Domingo) finds purpose through participation in the RTA theatre program as they attempt to stage an original comedic production. Vocalo's resident film critic Reggie “The Reel Critic” Ponder sat down with ‘Sing Sing' actors Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, Paul Raci and Sean Dino Johnson to discuss filming inside the prison, the real-life arts program on which the movie is based and the importance of investing in the rehabilitation of incarcerated men and women. ‘Sing Sing' is scheduled for limited U.S. theatrical release on July 12 and more widespread release Aug. 2. Q&A on the film The Secret Art of Human Flight with actor & executive producer Paul Raci, actor & producer Grant Rosenmeyer, and director/composer/editor H.P. Mendoza. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. In the wake of a tragedy, a grieving widower turns to a mysterious self help book from the dark web written by an eccentric guru, which promises to unlock the power to fly.
Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy do not skimp this week serving up 11 new reviews for you. Erik looks at Paul Raci as a spiritual guru who may have achieved a new kind of grief transcendence (The Secret Art of Human Flight) while Emma Roberts does Legally Blonde Goes To NASA (Space Cadet). Steve has a film about the Eichmann trial (June Zero) and that of a different kind of bloodsucker (Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person) which also partially sums up his review of Despicable Me 4. They look at different sides of altruism in the true story of a community and their collective adoptions (Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot) and the fantastic documentarian Penny Lane on her personal journey of donating a kidney (Confessions of a Good Samaritan). Yorgos Lanthimos takes on a three-pronged tale of abusive relationships (Kinds of Kindness) and Eddie Murphy returns to his most iconic role (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F). Finally, choose your warrior – the commando at the center of a bandit-filled train (Kill) or Mia Goth's survivor in the conclusion of Ti West's horror trilogy (MaXXXine). 0:00 - Intro 1:37 – The Secret Art of Human Flight 9:45 - Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person 15:27 - Space Cadet 25:29 - June Zero 35:20 - Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot 45:41 - Despicable Me 4 54:26 - Confessions of a Good Samaritan 1:04:56 - Kinds of Kindness 1:17:51 - Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F 1:29:28 - Kill 1:39:04 - MaXXXine 1:54:50 - Outro

This Is J.Lo…NOW! At age 54, Jennifer Lopez has released her ninth studio album, This Is Me... Now, and along with it, she financed a $20 million romantic musical film that dropped onto Amazon Prime last week! This Is Me...Now: A Love Story is loosely based on J.Lo's life as she falls in and out of love over the past decades. This visual album was only 65 minutes long, but we had much to say about it! Even though he's only in it for a few shots, Ben Affleck looms large over the project as Bennifer crashes and burns in the opening scenes, and J.Lo goes through a decades-long search to rediscover herself and her soul mate Ben. The film features many songs from her new album and many therapy scenes with Fat Joe as her therapist. It also features a whole host of cameos, including Jane Fonda, Kim Petras, Keke Palmer, Post Malone, Sofia Vergara, Jenifer Lewis, Jay Shetty, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Sadhguru, Derek Hough, Trevor Noah, Paul Raci, and Ben Affleck as Rex Stone/Biker. Watch it through our eyes if you dare!
A lifetime of acting, mostly on stage, finally paid off for Paul Raci when he earned an Oscar nomination for a part he was born to play in Sound of Metal. It has changed the trajectory of his career, and he is happy to talk about working with Nicolas Cage, Jennifer Lopez, and Colman Domingo on recent projects. But what Leonard and Jessie took away from our conversation is Paul's admirable work ethic and total dedication to his craft.

They discuss the film's themes of acceptance, recovery, and identity, and how they resonate with audiences. They also explore Ahmed's powerful performance, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and the supporting performances of Olivia Cooke as Ruben's girlfriend and Paul Raci as the leader of a deaf community. They examine the film's portrayal of deaf culture and the challenges faced by the deaf community.Join Todd and Dom as they reflect on the impact of "Sound of Metal" and explore how it challenges viewers to reconsider their own relationship with sound and the world around them.
Make sure you're wearing hearing protection for this latest episode of TDBR, because we're talking about 2019's Sound of Metal, the 2019 slice of life drama directed by Darius Marder which follows a metal drummer coping with hearing loss. This film was a huge hit at the Academy Awards, managing to nab both Best Sound Design and Best Editing, plus a few nominations for acting. It stars Riz Ahmed, Paul Raci, and Olivia Cooke. Believe us when we say that this film comes across as a horror movie to musicians like ourselves - wear earplugs at concerts people! We briefly discuss how much emotional resonance can carry a film, the fear of losing something you take for granted, and why a Miller Lite brewery is required to fulfill the needs of Ohio alone. Thanks for listening guys! Our next couple of episodes will be on Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood', and the television series 'Better Call Saul'.
Sidey is famed for his sartorial elegance so it should come as no surprise that he picked the Top 5 Suits for us to discuss. By the end of this week's show, you'll know your two-piece from your three-piece, your tuxedo from your dinner jacket and your shell suit from your tracksuit. SOUND OF METAL is director Darius Marder's 2019 story about Ruben, a drummer in the experimental heavy metal band Blackgammon and the impact of his devastating and sudden hearing loss on his ongoing issues with sobriety. Riz Ahmed was Oscar nominated for his portrayal and it's a transformational and powerful performance but it's supporting actor Paul Raci, himself the son of Deaf parents, who steals the movie as Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic Joe, the charismatic leader of the community. A rallying call not to treat individuals with disabilities as broken, waiting to be fixed, we all enjoyed this moving journey alongside the fascinating insights into the Deaf community and culture it also provides. As a father to two girls I've been subjected to more than my fair share of unicorns over the years and feel strongly that this week's kids feature, the animated series REGULAR SHOW, has it right: The Unicorns Have Got To Go, which is coincidentally the title of the episode we watched. Mordecai and Rigby find their friendship tested when Mordecai is more interested in buying new cologne 'Dudetime' in order to attract waitress Margaret than spending time with Rigby playing the latest exciting video game, Strong Johns. But when Mordecai sprays himself with the aftershave the only thing attracted to him is a group of douchebag unicorn bros, out for a good time and definitely not trying to trick you into drinking a cup of their suspiciously spermy looking cocktails. Soon things get out of hand; Rigby's trampoline gets broken and park manager Benson, a sentient gumball machine, appears to be sexually assaulted. Will the boys rid themselves of the hangers on and patch up their failing friendship inside 12 minutes? We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Call animal control! Today Rob and Alan are talking about the 18th episode of season two. In "The Possum" Leslie puts together a task force to catch a famous town-possum. In this episode you will hear all the similarities between animal control and classic clowning, who Harris Wittels was originally cast as, and the Parks seed that grew into Oscar nominee Paul Raci's incredible career! All of this, and some pretty darn interesting facts about our animal friends the possum. Got a question for the Pawnee Town Hall? Send us an email: ParksandRecollectionTownHall@gmail.com Or leave a 30-Second voicemail at: (310) 893-6992 After the infamous possum "Fairway Frank" bites Mayor Gunderson's dog at a golf course, mayoral representative Evelyn (Judith Moreland) asks Leslie to form a task force to capture it. Leslie, Tom, Andy and two incompetent animal control workers, Harris (Harris Wittels) and Brett go to the golf course and quickly find the animal. The animal control workers are useless and Tom immediately runs away, but Andy dives toward the animal and captures it. Evelyn is impressed with Leslie and promises her a special favor from the mayor's office. However, Leslie sees a second opossum and fears they have captured the wrong animal. She later finds out that the mayor doesn't care about catching Fairway Frank, but rather about securing a trophy animal for his bathroom.Back at the department office, reporter Shauna Malwae-Tweep (Alison Becker) interviews Andy for a newspaper article. After he brags about the capture, the reporter suggests his heroics might win him back the affections of Ann, his ex-girlfriend, much to Andy's excitement. April , who has romantic feelings for Andy, overhears this and leaves. Evelyn demands delivery of Fairway Frank. Leslie responds that there is uncertainty about the identity of Fairway Frank. She refuses to hand over the captured opossum and creates a ketchup-blood diversion so that April can escape with the caged animal.Leslie and April take the opossum to Ann's home, where April has been paid $50 to housesit. April lets the opossum out of its cage, and it causes havoc and minor damage. While hiding from the animal, April reveals her feelings about Andy to Leslie for the first time. When Leslie refuses to hand over the opossum, Evelyn angrily takes back her promise of a favor from the mayor's office. Andy, still oblivious to the reasons behind April's jealousy, delivers coffee to April, as well as the day's newspaper, containing a story which credits April for providing moral support to Andy. It is later revealed that Leslie has donated the opossum to the Pawnee zoo.Meanwhile, Ron plans a woodshop expansion in his home and seeks the approval of city planner Mark. Mark informs Ron that an inspection is needed to ensure that the facility meets all current zoning code standards, and an obviously lying Ron claims it does, clearly underscoring his vexation with governmental regulations. During the inspection, Mark finds numerous code violations, including oily rags placed above a wood-burning fireplace and a long-outdated fire extinguisher. Later, Mark takes a half-day off so that he can help his friend's woodshop meet city code. Ron thanks Mark by building a wooden canoe and leaving it in his office.

In this episode of Catching Up On Cinema, Trevor and his brother Matt sit down to review Darius Marder's 2020 Oscar darling, Sound of Metal (2020)! Headlined by Riz Ahmed, and co-starring Olivia Cooke and 2020 best supporting actor winner, Paul Raci, the film is a weighty but refreshingly organic drama focusing on the events that unfold when a young drummer/recovering addict discovers he is going deaf. While Ahmed's character of Rubi is featured in virtually every scene, the production makes frequent shifts in perspective, both audio and visual, that show a level of care and attention to detail that is truly commendable. An actor's film, the movie is never hurried, and often allows incredible cast of actors truly inhabit and and embody each scene, such that one often feels that any one of it's characters could easily headline a compelling film/story of their own. Beautifully written and edited, the film is streamlined and thought provoking, making for an easily digestible, but densely layered experience that is difficult to find fault with.

On this episode we review Sound of Metal. The oscar-nominated film starring Raz Ahmed Olivia Cooke, and Paul Raci. This freshman effort from Director Darius Marder I spilled with Powerhouse performance has an incredible sound design. The accolades this movie is currently getting our very warranted.

On this week's For Your Consideration, Collider's awards experts Scott Mantz, Perri Nemiroff and Jeff Sneider weigh in on the SAG Award nominations and why the guild snubbed presumed nominees Delroy Lindo, Amanda Seyfried, Paul Raci and Ellen Burstyn. After running down the list of nominees, Scott, Perri and Jeff turn their attention to their own predictions in the acting categories. There's a slot available in Best Supporting Actress that is more than open to debate, with Perri leaning towards young Helena Zengel, Scott embracing veteran Ellen Burstyn, and Jeff backing Glenn Close even though Hillbilly Elegy wasn't great. The FYC hosts are also torn on whether Chadwick Boseman is a lock for a second Oscar nomination for Da 5 Bloods, seeing as how that movie was largely ignored by both SAG and the Golden Globes. The gang aims to record new FYC episodes on a weekly basis going forward, so give this one a watch or listen, and make sure to leave a COMMENT below and RATE & REVIEW this podcast! This week on the pod John, Dave and Jeff continue with their Oscars/Razzies segment "It Was The Best of Film, It Was The Worst of Film (of 2020)". Our awards season choice this wee is Sound of Metal starring Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci. We had many positive things to say about this incredibly moving film. Our potential Razzie film is the apparently popular 365 Days, a Polish-Italian movie primarily in English that is Beauty and the Beast meets 50 Shades of Gray with enough sexual content to make quarantine interesting. Based on a trilogy of books, it was #1 on Netflix in June 2020 and two sequels are on the way despite a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Don't watch with your family. Director Darius Marder admits why most actors were too afraid to take the role. Paul Raci shares his rags to riches story of going from a drug-addicted Vietnam veteran to an actor in Hollywood and eventually fronting a Black Sabbath cover band that performs in American Sign Language Our very own Jon Stenvall shares his personal experience of growing up with a mother who is deaf Plus we're giving away advance screening passes to see Gerard Butler's new movie Greenland BEFORE it's released to the public! Gerard even stops by on The Backstage Experience to preview his upcoming episode on the show on December 18. You don't want to miss out!
"Sound Of Metal" is one of the best films of 2020 and we have a treat for you all today. We conducted three separate interviews talking with key people involved in the making of the film. First up is supervising sound editor Nicolas Becker, who takes us into one of the year's best soundscapes. Then we have writer/director Darius Marder who tells us about the screenplay, working with the deaf community and the actors of the film. And then we have someone who is part of both groups, actor Paul Raci who plays Ruben's mentor Joe in the film. All of them have a unique perspective to lend in these fascinating conversations.
