Andrew joins Ben this week for a discussion about a particular mythical beast, cultural symbol, and imaginary icon. One in the POÄNG and one in the pandemic chair—the guys fill us in on what they have been doing lately. Andrew has been thinking about his gardening hobby, researching a method for aging stainless steel, and creating all sorts of artsy things for his Advanced Dungeons Have Dragons pin Crowdfundr campaign. Ben has been pondering what he's going to do for the April Fools' Day episode this year and playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist (compliments of Binary Haze Interactive). Once they have concluded with the pleasantries, they enter… THE DRAGON! Together, they offer up a smorgasbord of pop culture ramblings and video game nonsense, including how their AD&D experiences shaped their creative natures. Then they navigate through a movie and music pop-culture-ridden obstacle course until they arrive at their video game destination. Andrew talks about Adventure for the Atari 2600, and Ben talks about one of the first laserdisc arcade games created in part by a former Disney artist and animator. *** 00:00:20 - A welcoming, the new threats, invest in leach farms, and Behind the Bastards 00:03:13 - Andrew left speechless on sadistics, Senator astronauts, and making it non-binary 00:07:33 - Stickers on Cybertrucks, rusting solutions for planters, and no library garlic this year 00:09:51 - The best kind of orchids, pro tips, the introduction is dragging, and the ADHD pin 00:12:58 - An ADHD Valentines Day, test printing for coffee mugs, and the AD&D pickup line 00:15:20 - Color printing wheels, and Ben has been playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist 00:18:02 - Not from Altoona, Mango is a Flerken, attention… dragons, and the ADHD pin origin 00:21:35 - Ben offends bowlers, no calisthenics before bowling, and "Trogdor the Burninator" Strong Bad Email #58 - Dragon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90X5NJleYJQ 00:23:50 - Another derogatory definition, Blair and the kaiju, and the word use blame game 00:28:07 - Taking back weird, tabletop lore, playing alone, and D&D method acting connections 00:32:29 - AARP Drews, rigorous screening, dragon drawing, and Pete's cost cutting measures 00:35:37 - Ariel is NOT dragon, movie audio n' picture books, H.R. In honor of the release of "The Marvels", Kody and Korbin take a look back at 2019's "Captain Marvel" this week on KHAP. This Phase 3 Marvel project starring Brie Larson, Jude Law, Annette Bening, Lashana Lynch, and Samuel L Jackson made over 1 billion dollars at the box office and was released at the peak of Marvel's powers and yet it is often looked down upon in the MCU canon. Listen to this episode to hear why we think Goose the Flerken is unmatched, why this movie should have been a more traditional origin story, why pre-vis ruined Marvel movies, and so much more. This week, The Junkies continue their in-depth look into beloved actor Samuel L. Jackson's most iconic roles by watching Captain Marvel, arguably the Marvel movie that has the highest concentration of Nick Fury by volume. Though this movie is ostensibly about Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel/Vers, played to smirking perfection by Brie Larson, it is also the origin story for Nick Fury, the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Thanks to a deft de-aging effect, we see baby-faced Fury and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) back in the grungy 1990s, investigating the appearance of the super-powered Captain Marvel, dueling aliens called Skrulls and Kree, and the fluffiest little Flerken you ought not to cuddle. Neither Alex nor Nicole are big Marvel fans, and this isn't the movie that is going to change that, but Shauna and Hayley are down for the female empowerment and a soundtrack that never lets you forget what decade this movie is set in. You can prepare for the next class by watching Samuel L. Jackson in Glass. Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. In this show, we chat to fellow Podcaster Em from Verbal Diorama about female superheroes. We discuss the portrayal of female heroes in movies past, present and future. Em in her signature chatty style, regales the team with her views of the TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She even has some positive thoughts on the much maligned 1992 movie of the same name. We talk about the role of the incredibly powerful women in the X-Men franchise. Em confesses to watching "Arnie" movies under age and the effect Brigitte Nielsen's, Red Sonja had on her, growing up. As this is a show featuring three movie nerds, the conversation sometime veers wildly off topic and we end up discussing Logan and drawing comparisons with Joker. Em gets side tracked by the Iron Giant and Jeff details why he needed three toilet breaks during Captain Marvel. Other topics are the theory that Em's cat might actually be a Flerken! The correct drink to have before Em discusses Buffy and the only good thing in the Fantastic Four movie? After many twists and turns we finally get the show back on course and look forward, with optimism, to the female led movies coming out over the next few years. Thanks Em, for being such a great guest and hope our listeners enjoy the show.
What do R2-D2, Pantalaimon, a weird robot koala thing, and Captain Marvel's Flerken friend Goose all have in common? They may (or may not) be new iterations of the age-old concept of a familiar. With a burgeoning awareness of the hazards and intersections of this topic with matters of cultural appropriation, we set out to answer a couple of fundamental questions: A) What exactly *is* a familiar, daemon, or animal companion if not a plot-useful pet? B) What can a familiar/daemon/animal companion DO for authors and readers of science fiction and fantasy that they can't necessarily do in other genres? 3) What do some of the more iconic as well as some of the more murky and borderline examples offer us in better understanding this genre/mode/cat we love so much? Watch our feed in the weeks to come as we start another round of exciting guest episodes——featuring authors and scientists and thinkers you'll be sure to fall in love with if you haven't already! 0:20 Eric BoberDo you see the Flerken or Goose the Cat making any more appearances in the MCU? If so, what type of role could they play?1:52 KesselRunnerThrough all Marvel content (MCU, Fox, TV, etc.) which actor/actress do you feel has been perfect for their role as either a major hero or villain or just regular character in general? 3:35 Giuseppe VicarettiBased on your favorite Marvel Comics, what parts of the Eternals do you want to see represented in the movies from the comics? Given what we got from Ragnarok and how some of Kirby's work translated into that film, do you want to see a more descriptive representation in Eternals, or do you want to see more of a combination of Gaiman and Kirby's work?7:48 Yanni DendrinosDo you see the Red Guardian popping up in the future of the MCU or is it just a one movie stint? I couldn't see Marvel casting David Harbour as someone who won't show up in future films. if you do think we'll see the Red Guardian after Black Widow, what other projects could you see him in?9:00 Brett HeierIf you could build an avengers team comprised of only tv marvel characters, who would you choose?10:20 We Are GrootAs we all know, the Disney+ series will have major ramifications on the movies. Do you think there will be an issue with casual audiences not watching the Disney+ event series and then being confused in the movies because they missed crucial events that happened in a series (example: watching doctor strange 2 without seeing wandavision)13:02 We Are GrootI think of you as an expert on this stuff, Sean. How do you think the next few movies will perform in the box office (especially Eternals)? I know from talking to casual fans they thought it was over with Endgame and FFH. And they were kind of annoyed to find out there's a whole new slate of movies and shows16:27 JP FaiellaI entered the MCU and the greater world of Marvel via Iron Man. I know we'll likely never see RDJ again, but do you see any connection to the ongoing story line via rescue, war machine, or someone else picking up the mantle? Can't get enough of the suits.17:47 Steven 84I believe Kevin Feige has said in the past that they would like to introduce one new property a year, so they don't end up releasing three sequels in a year. They have held to this so far, but with Black Panther 2, Guardians 3, and Captain Marvel 2 the next likely movies for Phase 5, which one do you think will have to wait until 2023 to allow for a new property in 2022? What new property do you think is most likely to be ready in 2022, Blade or Fantastic 4?20:44 Brett HeierWho do you think awkwafina will play in Shang-chi?21:55 Kerry VanderbergDo you think that Peter Parker will have any other mentor figures in the future? He probably doesn't need one to the degree that he looked up to Tony. But I can't help but wonder if there will be a instance where Peter seeks out the advice of someone like Dr. Strange or Hulk, or someone like that. Which other superhero would you like Peter to have some kind of interaction in which he receives advice or support, particularly in light of his identity being outed?25:57 Jeremy EdenSorry if this was asked or answered before, but in Avengers: Endgame, if Tony was retired and had no plans to return to active duty as an Avenger, why was he bothering to make Pepper her own armor?27:16 GioDo you think there is any significance to what Elizabeth Olsen said at Hall H about how Wanda would be "The Scarlet Witch" in WandaVision? If so, why is it significant? I think KF reiterated that as well. Where do you think the beginning of the MCU story actually starts? When you think about what it took to bring the MCU to life, there are so many places it could potentially begin - getting the initial loan to make Iron Man and hulk, the Marvel movies from the late 90s and early 2000s, selling off the rights to avoid bankruptcy, STAN LEE. If you were making this documentary, where do you begin the story of the MCU and the Infinity Saga?42:46 Anthony LawreyDo you think the storylines in the MCU are (sometimes) intentionally relevant to bigger real world issues (IE Winter Soldiers political issues, Black Panthers cultural issues) or accidental? On today’s show Adam and Mike discuss Captain Marvel and the MCU. Adam wonders whether his new cat is actually a Flerken. Mike avoids spoilers by being extremely suspicious of movie trailers. They also discuss possible new developments in Part 3 of the 4-part HBO series The Case Against Adnan Syed. This week’s Top 3: Favorite Current Actresses. In Watching Now, Adam finally finished watching Making a Murderer Part 2, while Mike remains completely clueless of the entire Steven Avery Saga. StreamTime Picks include a hidden (but dark) gem on Amazon starring Jaoquin Phoenix, and a not-so-under-the-radar-but-really-awesome Amy Adams movie.
Getting this one in under the wire, Tomb Believers! But have no fear, because we have a BLOCKBUSTER of audio awesomeness for your eager ears In this extra-long episode we discuss three proud products of April 1973 with Fear #13, “Where Worlds Collide!”, Marvel Spotlight #9, “The Snakes Crawl at Night..” And debuting in the episode, the first of Marvel’s fabled magazine line we’re coming on the show, DRACULA LIVES #1 If all this wasn’t enough to set the old blood pumping, we also have James & Trey sharing their thoughts on the latest Marvel Cinematic juggarnaut (no, not that one), Captain Marvel, at the beginning and end of the show, and James shows us just a bit of his skills as a prophet (you’ll have listen to the episode to hear what we’re talking about). It only took ‘em 21 movies, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has finally debuted a solo female superhero with Captain Marvel. Acclaimed indie filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck take to the stars for the story of Carol Danvers, ace pilot turned intergalactic warrior. Drenched in ‘90s nostalgia, the film finds buddy comedy with the spirited Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson dynamic; it finds Memento-lite storytelling gymnastics with Carol's fractured memories. Paul and Arlo debate this approach's effectiveness; think back to whether or not they loved the ‘90s; consider what the film's cosmic shenanigans mean for the future of the MCU; and attempt (with varying degrees of success) to check their privilege while analyzing a tale of female empowerment. Next: the boys crash land back on Earth for another Four-Color Flashback installment, this one discussing Craig Thompson's modern classic Blankets. On this installment of MULTIMEDIOCRITY: The Broadcast!, Doofin and Talley talk—in a spoiler-free manner—about the latest MCU entry, CAPTAIN MARVEL, discussing the film's merits (Ben Mendelsohn), shortcomings (Matthew's expectations), and its charming "feline" co-star, as well as the increasingly-angry army of bitter bros that tried (and failed) to make a dent in its box office. The gents also discuss late-90s/early-2000s pop-punk and how wide a net that genre label casts, wonder if Michael Jackson will be the abuser who makes or brakes America's willingness to separate the art from the artist, and reflect on the films and roles of John Candy, who is being remembered fondly online this month, the 25th anniversary of his death. Are people who use Uber Eats to order ice cream sociopaths? Will Tiger Woods ever catch Jack Nicklaus' majors record? How much empathy should you have for people who die trying to take a selfie? The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, power up for this week's review of Captain Marvel (2019). With a record-shattering global opening, the last Marvel Cinematic Universe film before Avengers: Endgame (2019) provides an enormous launchpad for the MCU's new standard-bearer, Brie Larson's Carol Danvers. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel features one of cinema's most enjoyable new “buddy cop” duos between Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, while also integrating a star-spanning subplot of warmongering, propaganda and prejudice.

Sean answers your Marvel questions!0:22 AlexSean, would you be fine with Liam Neeson cast in an MCU film after the offensive admission he made this past week? Can you see past this given that it was very long time ago and Neeson has likely changed. After all, Neeson stated in the interview he sought help and never actually did act out his thoughts. Or do you think Neeson should never work on any MCU film or any other film again. To those not in the know allow me to provide context: Neeson recently revealed in an interview that after his lady friend was sexually violated by a black person out of rage he used to go around looking for a random black person with a cosh or club. As a black person, I'm deeply disturbed at what Neeson confessed, and frankly I can never look at the man or his work the same way. It's heartbreaking to me as Neeson is one of favorite actors and I feel he's outed himself as a bigot. That being said, I do believe in forgiveness and second chances but the revelation that Neeson attempted to kill black people is shocking. As a black man, if a white man raped my friend I know for a fact I wouldn't try to seek to blame on an entire race of people and start hunting random white people to kill. 8:36 AlexIf you were to fancast Rami Malek in the MCU who would you cast as? For me, I think Malek would make for an interesting Silver Surfer.9:35 AlexWhat's your personal theory as to why Mutants soon-to-be in the MCU like Professor X and Wolverine have largely been uninvolved with the world-ending events such as the Chiaturi Invasion, Ultron, and of course the Mad Titan himself. In my mind, Professor X and Wolverine doesn't feel need to involve himself in such affairs and risk exposing themselves as a Mutants. I think Logan by the time of Infinity War is still working for the Canadian government and Xavier is probably traveling around the world looking looking for other Mutants to take under his tutelage.13:38 AlexDo you think Fox should've stopped doing the period piece thing after ‘Days Of Future Past'. I feel by the time Apocalypse came out I felt the decision to make the main X-Men movies period pieces amounted to really nothing outside some fun Easter eggs to the era they were set in. Apparently Dark Phoenix takes place a decade after the events of Apocalypse which is just an absurd time jump since hardly a lot of the X-Men really don't look like they've aged a day during that massive jump in time. Also do you think MCU X-Men will be a modern day film?15:25 Woo S! KimI have no real passionate preference for this, I was wondering if you do or do not. Should the final battle with Thanos in “Avengers: End Game” take place in Space or somewhere on Earth, me personally, we have seen three Avengers battles end on Earth, I wouldn't mind if “Avengers: End Game” ended in Space, but this isn't a deal breaker for me, how about you Sean?16:22 Woo S! KimThere has been a lot of talk about recasting Wolverine if and when Mutants are brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, do you think that casting an unknown for Wolverine is the best bet? Related to this, Sean I know you have said in the past that a 6 foot and under in height Wolverine isn't that much of a deal breaker to you as it was in the past but to me, I think Logan's height is a significant character trait because it is always a feature he gets mocked and underestimated about and honestly it's something I related to being Korean and 5'2, my point to all of this do you think it is a missed opportunity by Sarah Finn to not look at shorter in height performers for this role, why or why not?19:19 Woo S! KimSean what is your point of view on Shawarma, I have never had it, but if you ever ate Shawarma did you enjoy it?19:34 Dylan BrodieHey Sean! When it comes to valkyrie, is that her name because she is the last one left or does she have an actual name?20:21 BenHey Sean! I find myself agreeing with you and Paul about Marvel villains being underrated. When the movie world starts doing their “top villains of the decade” lists I'm sure many will feature Vulture, Killmonger, Loki, Thanos, and Hydra. The Skulls and Mysterio might be contenders after next year. When do you think all of the “Marvel villain problem” talk will stop, and what are some of your favorite movie villains of the decade?27:08 Kerry VanderbergDo you like cats, or do you just like saying the word “flerken”? (Or perhaps both?)27:35 Kerry VanderbergHave you thought about any kind of Patreon meet-and-greet event? Obviously we are all spread out across the world, but if anyone is going to WonderCon or San Diego Comic-Con, would you be open to doing a Patreon meet-up for either of those events? I plan on being at Comic-Con again this summer, and am debating on going to WonderCon this year. It would be fun not only to interact with you, but also meet some of the other patrons who might be attending such events. Hope you are doing well Sean, and have a wonderful weekend!30:07 David RosenHey Sean and Friends, Hope everyone had a good week! As we are now one month out from the Captain Marvel premiere, I feel like I've noticed a slight change in how Marvel Studios is presenting the movie. While the first two trailers were paired with symphonic/dramatic soundtracks, ever since the special look we got back in January, and along with the super bowl spot and succeeding tv spots, they seem to have shifted away from that tone, and have moved towards using music with more of a rock and roll feel. Given some of the (perhaps unfounded) criticism around the perceived notion that Brie Larson and hence the movie, were looking too serious (which I personally don't agree with, but we have to acknowledge that those feelings were/are out there), do you think this change in music and feel was an intentional shift to try and present the movie in a lighter tone? While it would be wrong to say that the initial marketing may have misjudged how people would accept the movie with a darker/more dramatic feel to it, the Disney/Marvel Studios marketing team are very smart, and I can't help but feel like there was an intentional course correction in the marketing and how they are now presenting the movie. I personally believe in the power that music has to dictate a movie's tone, and I can't help but feel that with the change in music behind these promos and tv spots, the movie has taken on a lighter tone and is looking a lot more “fun” that how it was initially presented in those first two trailers Do you agree with any of this?35:38 David RosenAssuming that Goose is more than just a cat and is in fact a Flerken, in a world where we get to make a Disney+ limited series about any pair of characters, how would you feel about a Goose and Cosmo limited series? And maybe just for fun we can throw in Howard the Duck cameo as well…37:43 Mookie JohnsonWhat do think happens the next "Ant-man movie gets titled?-maybe Ant-man and The Wasp 2? Then it could a word play on the fact that there are now 2 living Ant-men and 2 living Wasps.-maybe Ant-man, Wasp and Stature? Just to continue "growing" the franchise and add Cassie to action.- or maybe Ant-man 3 to show general audiences that its the end of that trilogy. Those are my thoughts, but I'd love to hear yours.38:39 Jeremy EdenI've got a HOT take for everyone, and I accept the flack that I may receive for what I'm about to say...I don't mind most of the changes that have been made to the original Star Wars trilogy over the years. Apart from the "Han shot first" controversy, I'm not offended by any choices George Lucas made. Replacing Clive Revill with Ian McDiarmid? Makes sense to me. Digital Yoda in Phantom Menace? Cool, that puppet always looked shoddy anyway. I know I'm in the vast minority on this.In fact, I'm sure I already know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyway: If we were to receive a huge 4K box set of the first 10 years of the MCU, and if Kevin Feige authorized (and the respective directors of each movie signed off on) alterations to some of the previous movies, how would you feel?I'll give you some specific examples to react to: Josh Brolin replacing the original Thanos from the post credits scene in The Avengers, altering the look of Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy to more closely match his look in Infinity War, replacing the "8 Years Later" title card from Spider-man: Homecoming with "6 Years Later", general background changes, and finally, let's just go nuts and say they COMPLETELY RESHOOT The Incredible Hulk with Mark Ruffalo. Again, in this fictitious universe where people like terrible choices, Kevin Feige and the filmmakers have signed off and agreed that these changes should be made. How would you feel? Sean answers your Marvel questions!Discord Announcement - Don't Skip This!9:09 Woo S! KimHey Sean, something that I wanted to run by you, I was watching “Ghostbusters II” on New Year's Eve and I remembered something director Ivan Reitman said about the origins for the premise of that film, is that The Ghostbusters saved New York City and the aftermath is NYC wants nothing to do with them, any longer and The Ghostbusters have little to no success adjusting to life after saving the city. My point to this, I thought in Phase II, in “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World” and certainly in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” there was this vibe of “All right, we saved Earth, now what?” Do you concur? Do you think that theme will be expanded more after “Avengers: End Game regardless of who survives that film, also do you think the potential resentment of The Avengers from the people of Earth if they remember “The Decimation” is going to be more gasoline on the fire of hatred when Mutants and potentially Inhumans are introduced in the MCU proper going forward and some people will share Helmut Zemo's views on “Enhanced Individuals?” Or is that too similar to The Accords? Thanks Sean.14:06 Woo S! KimYou have said this many times, that you don't think “Avengers: End Game” will feature the First Family of Marvel and or Mutants, and you prefer they aren't in there, to each his own on that one. My question is, from what we True Believers know there isn't going to be an Avengers film for awhile after “Avengers: End Game” where would you introduced the First Family of Marvel and or Mutants, if not in “Avengers: End Game?”17:03 Brett HeierHey Sean! I'm the comic books, Thanos is a recurring villain, do you think this could happen in the movies? Also, are you gonna talk about runaways? I just finished season 2 and it was AWESOME! Do you think Nico is using power from the dark dimension? As always, thanks for having an awesome podcast!21:15 Brett HeierAnother thing, lots of people think that Bobbi Morse's cancelled spin-off will be revived by Disney Plus. Would you like to see this happen? What do you think of Bobbi Morse as a character? Does she have anywhere else to go in the MCU? I loved Adrianne Palicki's performance and I hope she comes back. 22:44 Cory KostiukHey Sean Happy New year to you and your family. Who's the most powerful creature in all of comics?23:23 Michael bradleyHappy new year Sean! Looking back at the lead up to IW , what is one theory you thought wouldn't happen that did. And one theory you spot on. 27:03 Michael bradleyAlso leading up to End Game. How about having a place where everyone could put there 1 theory they think will happen. It would have to be secure so no one could see them until after the movie opens. Then they could be a special episode to see who guessed right. Thanks again.27:51 AlexHappy New Year Sean!! My question is how would you react to MCU Reed Richards turning evil and becoming the ‘Maker' like he did in the Ultimate comics? And how likely do you think Marvel will go that route?29:22 Alex WardHey Sean, happy new year to you and all the patrons! Since we're about to be inundated with excitement around Captain Marvel, Avengers Endgame, and Spider-Man Far from Home, I was hoping maybe you wouldn't mind answering a couple quick non-MCU questions?Since it's been back in the spotlight around its 1-year anniversary, I've always wondered what you made of The Last Jedi; I know this question might be opening a can of worms due to the passion on both sides of the fandom, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Personally, I loved it, but I can understand the criticisms.32:08 Alex WardHave you tried DC Universe yet? I recently got it and I'm happy to finally have easy access to DC comics, but I'm disappointed at the limited offering and with the comic-reading interface. And if you do have the app, have you checked out Titans yet? I found it to be, for better and for worse, sort of like a CW show dialed up to 11.32:53 Alex WardDo you think Goose the cat is gonna be a Flerken in the movie? Or is that maybe too zany for the tone they're going for?34:02 Mookie JohnsonIf you had to guess, what do you think in the Avengers:Endgame trailer is there just to throw us nerds off a bit?36:12 David RosenHey Everyone and Happy New Year! Here's to a bigger and better year for Marvel and Marvel Studios News in 2019! So when the x-men eventually come to the mcu, depending on how they chose to explain there absence from the MCU so far, would you be in favor of adding small little retcons here and there to make it seem like maybe they weren't as absent as we thought. For example, let's say they go down the road of there being a very small group of mutants that just kept themselves and/or their powers well hidden from the public. If Wolverine happens to be apart of that group, or even just as someone who kept himself hidden on his own, would you be ok with a flashback from his point of view of say a time during WW2, when he fought alongside Steve Rogers? Or maybe part of Erskine's backstory involves fleeing from a Nazi Germany program that involved experimenting on mutants, and instead of hurting people, he used him expertise in the US to eventually develop the super soldier serum (which maybe also has roots with a mutant with healing powers). I know you're not too much of a fan of making everything connected in the MCU, but if not used for major plot points, would you be ok with using the mutants' backstory to color in some of the MCU's minor history we've already been introduced to? It appears they might be doing with the Skrulls, so why couldn't they also do it sparingly with mutants?39:17 David RosenRegarding the discussion involving why Nick Fury didn't reach out to Carol during the events of Avengers, what if the reason is because creating the Avengers was actually her idea in the first place? For argument's sake, let's say before she goes back off into space at the end of her movie, she tells him that she feels it is necessary for earth to not rely solely on her and instead, “assemble” it's own Star Force-like super team (minus their possible betrayal) who can help save the world from another space invasion one day (as this would likely occur after Carol defeats the Kree invasion in her movie). In Avengers, Fury talked about how “there was an idea,” but never really says where that idea came from. So how would it make you feel to possibly learn in Captain Marvel that the idea for the Avengers actually came from Carol herself? If it comes to pass, it would also give her some claim to eventually lead them in Avengers: Endgame. Personally, I would really to hear Carol telling Fury that he needs “to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they can become something more, and to work together to fight the battles” that SHIELD can't. (maybe the “something more” and “work together” in this context also alludes to a failure by Star Force to do so). Personally I would love all of that. What about you?43:39 Hector Giovanni NavarreteHi Sean! Do you think the great critical reception of Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse can negatively affect the reception of Spider-Man FFH when that is released?45:10 Alex WardOkay, I do have two more! Similar to David Rosen's question, I was wondering about the in-universe concept of the Avengers, particular as it concerns the name itself. Do you think Endgame is when the Avengers will finally earn their name, as they're actually going to be avenging Earth on a grand scale? What do you think made Nick Fury decide on titling the idea "the Avengers initiative"? Do you think Fury himself had some sort of vengeance in mind, perhaps in response to something that will be revealed in Captain Marvel? Maybe after Captain Marvel, Fury knows the Earth is screwed no matter what, and it's going to take some remarkable people not to save it, but to avenge it. Otherwise, I'm also happy with the idea that "The Avengers" is moreso a "band name" of sorts, in that it just sounds cool.47:18 Alex WardI think you may have covered this way back when, but why do you think Thanos spared the original Avengers? We know he knew Tony Stark, and it's safe to assume that he therefore knows about all of the Avengers. Did he intentionally spare the others (Cap, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, Thor) as a sort of "reward," like did for Iron Man, or was it just his own bad luck that the OG Avengers all survived the snap?48:28 Hector Giovanni NavarreteBarring wanting to see Steve and Tony's eventual encounter in AE, post CW; which other encounter/conversation are you most looking forward to in AE?51:09 Alex WardThis might be a really obvious question, but who was Captain America talking about when he told Secretary Ross that Earth just lost its best defender in Infinity War?52:07 Mark LeakHello, Sean...Happy New Year! I have a few questions, and I apologize in advance for being long winded.I think most people expect Black Panther 2 to land on the February 12, 2021 slot, and I understand why, given what the first film just did in February (not to mention being able to tie it into Black History Month). But do you think the May 7th slot is a possibility? As you yourself have said, the May slot is usually reserved for Marvel Studios' biggest film of the year. Given the financial and cultural success of the first film, I think the Black Panther franchise has earned that distinction in any year that there isn't an Avengers film.55:51 Mark LeakAdditionally, what films do you think Marvel will release in the previously announced 2021 and 2022 slots? Truthfully, I'm still among those who hope that Marvel Studios will go to four films per year (one per quarter) even with the Disney Plus series as a new option. If Marvel just did sequels to Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Guardians, Ant-Man & The Wasp and the Avengers, that would take up the six announced 2021/22 slots, without including Shang-Chi or any other potential new franchise. Even with the added option of doing limited series on Disney Plus, there are just too many characters that Marvel has on its roster (and more that they will be gaining access to once the Fox deal is complete) to remain at three films per year, while also giving timely sequels to current franchises and introducing newer ones, in my opinion.1:03:10 Mark LeakLastly, one of the things I'm most looking forward to in Captain Marvel is the reimagining of Maria Rambeau. Her daughter Monica has been one of my personal favorites since I first saw her in an Avengers comic back in the 80s (yes, I'm old). I believe I recall you saying you were hoping DeWanda Wise would be available for the role. Is she still your choice, or do you have any other actresses in mind for Monica? DeWanda is definitely on my list, but Nicole Beharie (Sleepy Hollow), has always been my first choice. Teyonah Paris (Survivor's Remorse) and Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery) are also on my list. Thanks for your time, and please keep up the marvelous work (pun intended)!
