I've been listening for several months now and I love the music. Thanks for introducing me to some great celtic music." Brian McReynolds emailed some photos: "This is Brian McReynolds. What I was doing today while listening was participating in a 5k Turkey Trot. Your podcast even had me skipping along after the 2 mile mark. Here is a few photos I took during the run. " Shel O'Toole responded regarding music books for Celtic Guitar: "Hi Marc, Two books that were recommended are Celtic Guitar by Glen Weiser and The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book. I haven't checked out either of them but they both seem to be widely used. I was listening to show 581 and someone asked about books for Celtic Guitar. I'm having a catch up day, this is the third podcast for the day (I'm up to date again). I also remembered to email one of the bands We Banjo 3 and tell them how I first heard them here and now I follow them on Soundcloud. I love their sound. The song Hummingbird is superb. Thanks as always for your fabulous show. Is there any way I can make a one off contribution? I went to patreon but I don't want to make a weekly subscription. I'd rather just make a one - off contribution each year. Is that possible? Cheers Marc, have an awesome weekend." Claussen is classically trained, and the Celtic influences are easy to hear throughout her style. She is crystal-clear and very enjoyable to listen to on the strings of this enchanting instrument. Claussen has released five solo albums, starting in 2002. She has also collaborated with other artists throughout her career. Since Celtic songs are her specialty, it makes sense that she would craft a Christmas album. After all, what other instrument brings forth the true magic of the holiday more than the harp? The mood that this music calls forth is at once elegant and otherworldly; especially at the hands of an expert harpist. There really isn't anything quite like it. Not only is there the magnificent Celtic flavor, there's also an old-fashioned, medieval charm to it all. It makes for a nice pairing. On Light So Brilliant: Carols and Tunes for Christmas, her collection of Christmas music offers 15 tracks which will add warmth and delight to any holiday gathering. This solo harp album would also be perfect to enjoy by the fire, or while sipping a hot cuppa and taking in the majesty of a fully decorated tree. You'll hear holiday favorites such as “We Three Kings” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”… but that's not all. Claussen also stocks the track listings with a delicate rendition of "Bouree d'Avignon” and other rewarding offerings, providing a full spectrum of beautiful music to round out any holiday music collection. Whether you want to keep it all to yourself or give this album as a gift, it's well worth a listen! Although this artist has just one Christmas album, really any of her albums would mix in well with a holiday vibe. Some instruments just have that “festive” feel to them, and the harp is definitely one of them. It puts a little spring in the step and happiness in the heart—which is what we call holiday spirit! Welcome to Hang the Holly. You'll meet Laura MacKenzie this week as we take an inside look into the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. The The Holly and The Ivy is already getting a ton of downloads. Over 1000 in less than a week after it came out. So I have high hopes that all of these incredible artists will special attention this holiday season. Show #56 features Christmas music from The Irish Rovers, Steel Clover, Matthew Young, Emish, Spencer & Beane, Laura MacKenzie, Cantus Lunaris, The Jig Is Up!, Andrew D. Huber, Rosmerta, Haggis Rampant, A Shamrock in Kudzu, Sarah Marie Mullen, The Selkie Girls, The Gothard Sisters. If you enjoy the show, please do all of these artists a favor. Share it with your friends on social or in your community. You can also rate the podcast or post comments on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher. And of course, subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. And now Laura MacKenzie It's not hard to believe that Laura MacKenzie has Irish dance in her background – you can almost hear it when she plays her music! This talented artist has not only been the recipient of some coveted fellowships, but she also has her own designated namesake “day” in Minnesota because of her work in traditional Irish music. (In case you are wondering, it's November 22nd.) Laura has been mentored by some wonderful musicians on everything from button accordion, to Irish flute, to Scottish smallpipes. Yes—she's definitely one of those Celtic artists that plays numerous instruments! She has also been awarded some heavy-hitting titles, such as a Master Folk Artist, a "Celtic music wizard”, and a "High priestess of Celtic music”. It's doubtful that any of these monikers were handed out lightly! If you're looking to lay in something unique in terms of holiday music, this lady presents some fun options. Yuletide Bagpipes is exactly what it sounds like—a nice collection of tunes, featuring a wide array of pipes. You'll hear border pipes, smallpipes, lowland pipes, medieval greatpipes, and even some cornemuse. It's hard not to feel festive with this type of music wafting through the air. The album begins with Joy to the World/I Saw Three Ships and offers 15 bright tracks that end with her version of Auld Lang Syne. Celtic Holiday is another one of MacKenzie's holiday albums; this one features 14 tracks with many favorites peppered throughout, such as “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”, “God Rest Ye Marry Gentlemen”, and “What Child is This/The Greensleeves Jigs. There's an especially haunting version of “O Come, O Come Immanuel” that is almost meditative. Just lovely. It's always interesting to see what various artists do with the arrangement of tunes that are familiar to almost everyone. Each has their own take on how to present it, and this is especially true of holiday music like these tracks. For those who can't decide which of these sounds better, the obvious compromise would be to go with “Heigh Ho, The Green Holly”, which is a collection of Celtic Christmas music that was selected from both of the previous albums. It really is a good mix of the two. This would probably also make a great gift if you know someone who loves the pipes and is in need of a bit of holiday cheer this season. Quite honestly, we could probably all use a bit of that in 2020. Take a look at the track lists and see if one of these albums piques your interest, or tune in and hear Laura MacKenzie for yourself on show #56: The Holly and The Ivy. Welcome to Hang the Holly. This is an inside look into the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. Today, I'm gonna tell you about The Irish Rovers. But first... the second 2020 episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast is now online. It's called The Holly and The Ivy. It features Christmas music from The Irish Rovers, Steel Clover, Matthew Young, Emish, Spencer & Beane, Laura MacKenzie, Cantus Lunaris, The Jig Is Up!, Andrew D. Huber, Rosmerta, Haggis Rampant, A Shamrock in Kudzu, Sarah Marie Mullen, The Selkie Girls, The Gothard Sisters. If you want to enjoy an hour of Celtic Christmas music, rate the show. Then subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. Let's get on with the show. Hailing all the way back to Toronto in the 1960s, The Irish Rovers are a well-regarded Irish band that have had the honor of being named the “Folk Group of the Year” in Canada, appeared on TV shows in the U.S., and even hosted their own show on the CBC in the 1970s. Known for their Irish folk music—and their longevity—this band has produced more than 45 albums that people have enjoyed throughout the world, many times over. If you're searching for a good batch of Irish Christmas tunes, this Canadian band delivers a number of different collections to choose from. Piano for Christmas Time is a wonderful album of instrumental holiday music. The blend of songs is perfect for holiday dinners or tree trimming, or whenever you are looking to add a bit of Irish flavor to the mood of the day. This 10-track collection finishes off with a fun Christmas Eve medley, blending favorites like "Jingle Bells", "Frosty the Snowman", and "Here Comes Santa Claus" together to help get everyone in a festive mood. Merry Merry Time of Year is another collection of Christmas music that provides 15 lovelies to round out any holiday collection, such as “Christ the King” and “Must Be Santa”. Also available—and a great choice if you're in the mood to kick back and watch a concert--be sure to try out their DVD, “The Irish Rovers Christmas”, which showcases the band (and guests!) at Chatham Ontario's historic Capitol Theatre, playing live. Not only will you hear great music, but the 2+ hours that were recorded also feature some sneak-peeks behind the scenes and other cool extras. Those searching for a recognizable list of Christmas classics—Irish style—would do well to invest in “The Irish Rovers Songs of Christmas”, which kicks out some tried-and-true favorites. Included on this album are tracks like “Away in a Manger”, “We Three Kings”, and “Silent Night”, among others. And don't miss the band's fun take on “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”, which makes you want to sing right along with them! There's something to be said for bands like The Irish Rovers, who have stood the test of time. Groups like this have truly developed a sound that is all their own. Playing together for so many years results in a seamless blending of musicianship, and the band is filled to the brim with Irish energy and enthusiasm. Whether you're looking to round out a collection of Christmas music or want to share some Celtic-style tunes with friends or family as a gift, these albums make a terrific pick. To get a taste of this band's take on holiday music, you can now listen to show #56: The Holly and The Ivy. The show is free to enjoy, as usual. Because we hit it, I told patrons that I would give them a two-hour instrumental Celtic music special. That’s what we are doing today. Of course, it actually wasn’t ONE two-hour special. I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Morgan Presley emailed a photo: "Hi Mark! I first discovered your podcast a few months ago, and I immediately fell in love! I’ve discovered so many new songs and artists, and I look forward to each new episode. Your podcast has now become the soundtrack to my sewing. It’s a lovely addition to my hobby, and makes my weekend afternoons drafting patterns, pinning fabrics, and sewing seams even more enjoyable. I also listen to your instrumental episodes while doing my physics homework. Thanks so much for creating this podcast!" Debra VanTuyll emailed: "Hi Mark --I was just listening to your podcast while I work on a research grant. Pictures would be way too dull to share. However, I heard you mention not knowing of any Irish bands in Atlanta. I'm sure you know John Maschinot. He has a group that plays some. Then, there's the Atlanta Junior Irish Ceili Band that Katherine Irwin Thomas runs. Over in Augusta, you've got de Ceádaoin, which is also more of a ceili band. We do sessions twice a month, once at each of the two breweries here (come join us if you're in this area. We're at Riverwatch Brewery the last Friday of the month and Savannah River the middle Wednesday of the month) and occasional gigs. We're presently working on a Christmas CD that will feature some little-known Christmas jigs and reels as well as some better known carols. We'll send you a copy when it's out. Also, Lillie Morris has a number of children violin students, and they play occasionally in Harlem. At any rate, my main reason for writing was to let you know that the Irish music scene may be nano-sized in Georgia, but there are a few of us fighting the good fight out here in the hinterlands! Best wishes from east Georgia!" Ed Stoffer responded to a Celtic Music Magazine email: "Hey Marc, Yes I did get all the music downloads. Thanks so much, I've listened to most of them and they are great. I've been listening for a while now, but sure which episode I started on but for at least a couple of years. Thank you for taking the time to produce the podcast. I'm still relatively new to Irish and celtic music, but for the past 6/7 years my wife and I have been regulars at the Iowa Irish fest here in Waterloo Iowa. Some of our favorite artist are Scythian, The Screaming Orphans, Seo Linn, The Gothard Sisters, Gaelic Storm, The Langers Ball, Realta, and JigJam. Thanks again for all the work you do to put the program together." Ravus Caelum emailed a photo: "Mark - Thanks for doing the podcast. You asked for pictures of us while we're listening, so here's me working on chainmaille and unwinding with some excellent music after work." Sarai Lorenzo emailed: "Hi! I'm listening to your podcast while working designing books on an editorial. I am from Galicia, Spain, a place that is linked closely to Celtic culture. Thank you for your work, the music and sorry for my english! Keep doing this amazing work!"

This weekend, I'm heading to join the Kilted Kings at the Mid-South Renaissance Faire. I want to share with some thoughts about the show and what you can expect from our performances. Greetings. My name is Marc Gunn. This show is about the many amazing experiences I have as a musician and a traveler. It's funny how one show leads to another. The Brobdingnagian Bards began our career at Excalibur Fantasy Faire in March 1999. As the faire ended, a whole bunch of entertainers and patrons said, you should go to the Castle Muskgee Renaissance faire. When that one ended, they said, you should check out this faire. Those recommendations got us all the way to, our then dream faire, the Texas Renaissance Festival. That's sort of what happened with the Mid-South Renaissance Faire. I met the entertainment director 3-4 years ago at the Louisiana Renaissance Festival. Everyone was talking about this new faire. I couldn't make it at that time. It wasn't until I got invited to ShadowCon that it became a possibility. You see, I had a booth at ShadowCon right next door to the faire's booth. Beth and I had great conversations all weekend. She invited me to contact her. But again, there wasn't much likelihood. At least until I found out that my wife was gonna be in Memphis this fall. So I emailed the faire and started a dialogue. They wanted more than just a soloist. They wanted a full band to fill their pub, a three-piece in fact. So I decided to reunite Kilted Kings PLUS one. Randy Wothke will once again join me on stage. Randy is the leader and percussionist of The Rogues, a bagpipe and drum quartet from Houston, Texas. He's an incredible musician. It was a great honor to record our album Name On My Soul with him. And incidentally, we have a new Christmas single that will be available online very soon. I also invited String, aka Matthew Trautwein, to play fiddle. String plays with the Renaissance rock band, The Lost Boys. I first met him at the Georgia Renaissance Festival over a decade. Last year, he came to the Louisiana Ren Faire to fill for Randy when he was already booked. String is fantastic and one of the nicest people you'll meet to boot. Oh! And I should point out that The Lost Boys have a brand new album that should be available soon if it's not already. Since it's a Kilted Kings show, a lot of the music that we will play is from our debut album. You'll hear "Slainte Mhaith", "Prettiest Hobbit", "Wild Mountain Thyme", "Flower of Scotland", and of course, "Name On My Soul". You'll also hear songs like "Ride On" and "Mingulay Boat Song". With a fiddler, I'm really looking forward to playing my instrumental tunes without singing them as well. So listen for a new arrangement of "Marionette Jig" and "Clogden More". There are a lot of things to see at the Mid-South Renaissance Faire aside from us. There's music from Wind, Wood & Wire, Frieman the Minstrel, Silver Penny, and bagpipes from my friends of Haggis Rampant. Plus, story telling from Melandra of the Woods. There's jousting, a Mad Hatter, and knighting ceremony. The Lords of Adventure are there. They are brilliant comedy and sword fighting duo. There's also something called Armchair Wizards, which is listed as on-stage role-playing game show. Connor O'Carriag is doing magic and mystery. I'm happy to see my friends Arr & Tarr the Trolls will be there with kids comedy and fun. Lord Larry Longfellow does magic & comedy and Alima Tribe offers belly dancing. You'll also find fighting demonstrations and historical reenactments with the SCA and Amtgard. Look for Kilted Kings out there for two weekends, the 13th and 14th, and the 20th and 21st. If you want to get a Behind-the-Scenes, post-look at how the show goes, join my Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. Thanks you so much for listening. You'll find links to many of the things mentioned in the shownotes. If you haven't yet subscribed or rated the show on Apple Podcast, head on over to Celtfather.com.

In the Studio: Dan Ken Critter Cocktail du Jour: Sangria Choose a palatable wine. Pour in some Brandy or any other liquor you want to fortify the concoction with. Mix some fruit in there. Add some sugar if you want. Add some Sprite, 7 Up, or carbonated water if you want. This is really a blank canvas type of drink. You can pretty much do anything with it. Just have some wine, liquor of some sort, and some fruit and you got all the makings of the base of Sangria (or all of it, really it's up to you). Just mix to taste and get fucking wild on it. Happy drinking! Quote du Jour: Adam: By all accounts we should be pretty fucked up right now but. I feel kinda great! Nick: I feel kinda crazy... Lou: I feel Fantastic! Several years ago Alec and Dan the founding brothers of Scythian, released a kids album for their 25 nieces and nephews called Cake For Dinner. It's a nice mix of traditional Irish songs like South Australia and The Littlest Jig, as well as folk and campfire songs from the U.S., French Canadian, Italian, and Ukrainian. Check it out at http://cakefordinnermusic.com. Plus their newest album Old Tin Can, is a return to their folk roots. A great band for all ages. At last Friday's show in Philadelphia there was a 3yr old girl rocking out with her family. Thanks for the great podcasts and have a Happy St. Patrick's Day." Ashley Taylor sent a picture: "I actually just found this station about an hour ago searching for coyote run. I met them almost 10 years ago. I am from Greeneville, Tennessee and currently work on my 3 year olds costume. She is gonna be a viking and I'm painstakingly working on making a fur halfskirt from yarn. Have come to really like this station and will defanetly listen more. Attached is what yarn I have converted" Annie Lorkowski wrote on Facebook: "I was listening to the podcast as my flight touched down in Dublin today. Sorry no picture.
