What happens when your frontline employees are tired of apologizing on behalf of the company? When public perception isn't in your favor? This was the reality Oscar Munoz faced when he took the role of CEO and chairman of United Airlines in 2015. So he went back to basics, embarking on an extensive listening tour with thousands of employees — and in time, things turned for the better. We sat down with Oscar to learn about that journey, what's changed since and the value of deploying this strategy. Oscar will lead a spotlight session at IABC World Conference 2024, “Leadership Is an Act of Extended Storytelling.” The format will be part fireside chat and part town hall, to which Oscar says in this episode: “Bring it!” Bring your best questions, ask him about failure and get ready for a refreshing way to kick off your time at World Conference. Tune in to this inspiring conversation and make plans to see Oscar this June in Chicago.  ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Oscar Munoz is the former CEO and chairman of United Airlines (UAL) and serves on the board of directors of Salesforce, CBRE, TelevisaUnivision, and Archer Aviation, a leading Urban Air Mobility company and developer of all-electric vertical take-off and landing (“eVTOL”) aircraft. He serves on the Pentagon's Defense Business Board, is a trustee of the University of Southern California and the Brookings Institution, as well as an independent trustee for Fidelity. He is the author of the Wall Street Journal best-selling memoir, “Turnaround Time: Uniting an Airline and its Employees in the Friendly Skies,” published by Harper Business in May 2023. He is co-chair of the 2023 Blue Ribbon Commission for the National Association of Corporate Directors, the authority on best boardroom practices. Under his leadership, United Airlines demonstrated rapid improvement, delivering industry-leading operational reliability, and sustained financial success, with stock value increasing 54 percent during that period. Munoz formally retired as UAL's executive chairman in May 2021. Previously, Munoz served as president and chief operating officer of the North American rail-based transportation supplier CSX Corp. A decade of excellent financial performance, including a boost in operating income of nearly 600 percent, earned CSX recognition on the list of Most Honored Companies by Institutional Investor magazine. He has served in various financial leadership positions across diverse industries, including U.S. West, AT&T, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo.  He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and an MBA from Pepperdine's Graziadio Business School. U.S. Hispanic Business Council President Challenges FDA's Proposed Ban on Menthol Cigarettes

WASHINGTON D.C. (AURN News) – Javier Palomarez, president and CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council, has raised some serious concerns over the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) forthcoming ban on menthol cigarettes. In an exclusive interview with AURN News, Palomarez passionately voiced his reservations about the potential repercussions of the ban, particularly its impact on imports, exports, and communities of color. “In 29 states in America, marijuana is legal. 29 states…and every year more and more states are making marijuana legal. Imagine a world where you can purchase a joint and you're absolutely fine to sit outside and smoke it. But if you purchase a menthol cigarette, you could get arrested,” Palomarez said. Palomarez expressed concern about potential ramifications on trade and illicit activities. For the United States Hispanic Business Council, the potential menthol ban by the Biden Administration is an issue that has deep effects. “We had to speak up and say listen, it impacts our grocers, our convenience store owners, our lounge owners, our restaurant owners, our bar owners, our bodega owners, that again, are playing by the rules, paying taxes, creating jobs, and selling a product that is legally consumed and can only be consumed by an adult. And if you criminalize that, guess what's going to happen, the cartels will take over and they will begin to sell this product and making a huge fortune,” Palomarez told AURN News. The FDA is expected to make its final decision sometime this month. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I love the simplicity in the question to his team, “Hey, what are the 10 dumbest rules we've put in place?” And then changing them… This is something we all should think about periodically. The father-daughter bond Oscar has with his daughter, Jessica. The traits he sees in her that are also in him are “tenacity and refusal to give in no matter what.” Before Oscar became CEO, the culture was based on a “cost-cutting, rule-obsessed, disciplinary-heavy culture." Episode 24 takes a deep dive into entrepreneurial opportunities in our community. However, we give today's episode a decidedly Hispanic flavor. Our three entrepreneurs are transplants to our community. That is not really much different from the massive influx of community members relocating to South Florida from other places in the United States. What differentiates these three individuals is they've overcome language and cultural barriers to success having their roots in Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Mary Sol González embedded herself into the community with multiple board memberships. She founded the International Business Alliance as an arm of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber and has gone on to found the Hispanic Entrepreneur Initiative (HEI). Roxana Scaffidi came to the US from Peru in 1995. After gaining valuable business experience she made the decision in 2013 to establish her own company, FL-Accounting & Advisors to offer tailored accounting services to small and mid-sized companies. Our third guest, Erick Solms describes himself as a soccer fanatic, web aficionado, social mediaholic and Internet specialist. He harnessed those attributes, converting his passion for technology into an IT business owner. In 2014 he created Simplitfy and has grown a successful IT support company. Listen to how these three "foreigners" overcame the obstacles to success.

On this 243rd episode of "Marketing Today," host Alan Hart speaks with Esperanza Teasdale, vice president and general manager of the Hispanic Business Unit for Pepsico Beverages North America. Teasdale is responsible for the overall strategy, engagement, and sales for a Hispanic business unit that brings in over $2 billion per year. We start our conversation with Teasdale's experience from growing up with two parents that had both immigrated to the US from Ecuador in search of a better life. Since they both had demanding blue-collar jobs, Teasdale "grew up as a latch key kid," taking herself to and from school as a child, essentially responsible for herself. Teasdale then discusses her engineering education, spending time in manufacturing environments after graduation until attaining her MBA and ultimately moving onto sales. Once Teasdale realized that the sales sector wasn't for her, she moved to marketing. We then dive into the Hispanic business unit and the "untapped potential" that led to its creation. Now and into the future, Teasdale and her team are focused on multicultural marketing, as "everything we do should be multicultural because that is the fabric of our country." Teasdale takes us through the helping hands she received throughout her career as a result of her willingness to be vulnerable. "You don't have to wait for someone to ask you to take a seat; you can take it yourself." Lastly, we discuss the opportunity that marketers have today to think differently about their previously rejected ideas because "the world today is different than it was before!"   Highlights from this week's "Marketing Today": As the daughter of immigrants, Esperanza greatly appreciates the sacrifices that her parents made to have a better life. 1:37 Esperanza's parents came from the hot ecosystem of Ecuador to the cold winter in the US. 2:30 Equality is something that everyone is trying to achieve in today's world, especially with all that has gone on this year. 3:22 There were times when Esperanza's parents were injured or sick, and no money came in the door. 3:54 After studying engineering in her undergrad in college, Esperanza spent quite a bit of time in a manufacturing environment. 6:58 Esperanza's company paid for her MBA, after which she had her choice of path, ultimately choosing marketing. 7:48 The Hispanic Business Unit at PepsiCo was created to tap into the previously untapped Hispanic sector. 10:36 Multicultural marketing has gone through a revolution that parallels the makeup of our country. 12:29 There is no one-size-fits-all in the melting pot that is the US, even within each culture. 13:13 P&G has shown to be a champion of diversity and inclusion by driving cultural relevance through its advertising. 16:03 Heading into the future, we need to be more culturally relevant, and the Hispanic Unit is an example of what the marketing industry should look like. 19:10 The chaos and uncertainty of 2020 caused PepsiCo to pause during the initial breakout of COVID. 22:10 Esperanza and her team made sure to study the effects of COVID on the habits of Hispanic consumers. 22:50 The Hispanic population has shown resilience in its journey to get to the US and this helped maintain optimism in the face of chaos. 24:37 To promote passionate multicultural youth's ability to vote, PepsiCo launched its Unmute Your Voice Campaign. 26:12 Esperanza's team is focused on leaning into the communities that need the most help as it enters 2021. 28:06 2020 has shown Americans to be empathetic, looking for ways to help however they can. 29:30 PepsiCo finds itself in so many households in the US that the decision to make a bold message brings a lot of risk. 32:41 Esperanza takes responsibility in her role as a Latina executive to bring others along to change their paths for the better. 35:06 The ability to show up, take action without someone asking, and put yourself out there will bring the greatest rewards. 38:30 Throughout her career, Esperanza has received advice and help from high-level executives to be successful. 39:15 The experience of losing both of her parents, while devastating, taught Esperanza a lot about herself and her family history. 42:10 Esperanza feels a responsibility to be empathetic to the motivations behind the actions of the people around her. 44:15 Looking back, Esperanza would encourage herself to take the offered hands of anyone that had done her wrong. 46:01 The Mastercard Initiative created a card that allowed anyone that is transgender to have their true identity on the card. 48:35 For those marketers with a fixed mindset, current times offer the opportunity to think about things differently. 50:52   Resources Mentioned: Ecuador Latchkey kid P&G's Marc Pritchard Marc Pritchard's work to drive diversity (Adweek) Marc Pritchard from P&G on Marketing Today Pepsi Unmute Your Voice Campaign Scott Finlow from PepsiCo on Marketing Today Growth mindset Orange Theory Arm Band Mastercard Card for LBTQIA+   Subscribe to the podcast: Listen in iTunes (link: http://apple.co/2dbdAhV) Listen in Google Podcasts (link: http://bit.ly/2Rc2kVa) Listen in Spotify (Link: http://spoti.fi/2mCUGnC ) Connect with the Guest: https://www.linkedin.com/in/esperanza-teasdale-a867225/ https://twitter.com/espyt https://twitter.com/PepsiCo Connect with Marketing Today and Alan Hart: http://twitter.com/abhart https://www.linkedin.com/in/alanhart http://twitter.com/themktgtoday https://www.facebook.com/themktgtoday/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/marketing-today-with-alan-hart/   Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/marketingtoday See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The fifth annual State of Latino Entrepreneurship report says that Latinos are launching businesses at an unprecedented pace, but barriers — some long-standing, some brand new — keep them from reaching their potential. One of those barriers is: - Latino-owned businesses experience funding shortfalls from traditional small business lending sources. “I need access to capital.” – Debt is not capital. Capital is the difference between what you own, your assets, and what you owe, your liabilities. FACT: Lenders love their money more than they love your business. As business loan performance drops off, U.S. banks are anticipated to rein in criteria this year, a Federal Reserve (Fed) survey showed on Monday (Feb. 3, 2020). Banks that reported expecting to tighten standards for any loan category were additionally asked to assess the importance of several potential reasons for the expected tightening: (1) capital or liquidity position, (2) collateral values, (3) competition from other bank or nonbank lenders, (4) risk tolerance, (5) ease of selling loans in secondary market, (6) credit quality of loan portfolio, and (7) concern about the effects of legislative or regulatory changes. Be Prepared, don't be personally liable for your business debt: + Build Business Credibility + Business assets and collaterals + Build Business Credit (Net 30 accounts, revolving credit cards, etc.) If we don't contribute something to the economic empowerment of the Latino business community through a robust and comprehensive approach, our economy will be negatively impacted, specially in those areas with a high concentration of Latinos.

Charles P. Garcia is the CEO of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA), whose mission is to empower and develop Latino men and women as leaders of character for the nation in every sector of the global economy.  Founded in 1972, ALPFA is the nation’s largest Latino professional organization with 43 professional chapters and 144 student chapters.  He also chairs the TIGER 21 South Florida Chapter, the premier peer-to-peer group for ultrahigh-net-worth individuals, which is in 17 cities, and its 320 members control over $30 billion in personal assets. Mr. Garcia’s career spans a broad spectrum of industries, all focused on leveraging his in-depth understanding of Hispanic consumers.  In 1997, Mr. Garcia became the CEO of Sterling Financial Group, a privately held financial services firm which he grew from a small business to 60 offices in seven countries, 20,000 Hispanic clients and $2 billion in assets prior to selling it in 2005.  The company was named by Inc. magazine as the # 8 fastest growing privately held company in the country and Charles was named Entrepreneur of the Year by three national organizations. With an expertise in retail operations, marketing, finance, strategy, and international business, he served for six years (until the company was sold in 2012) on the Board of Directors of Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. (Fortune 500), one of the largest supermarkets in the southeast with nearly 500 stores and 400 in-store pharmacies.  He served on the Audit Committee, as a financial expert under SEC rules, and on the Nominating and Corporate Governance committee.  He also chaired an Advisory Board for Aetna Inc. (Fortune 100), reporting directly to its CEO, focused on growing the Hispanic market share of this diversified healthcare company.  Mr. Garcia was also a Hispanic market strategy advisor for Amway, a $13 billion private company in the direct selling industry. Mr. Garcia has worked for four Presidents, both Democrat and Republican, and served on high profile federal and state government boards.  He was the Chairman of the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Air Force Academy, appointed by both President Bush and President Obama, to oversee all operations at the Air Force Academy.  The fifteen member board is composed of four U.S. Senators, four U.S. Congressmen, and seven Presidential appointments.  The Secretary of the Air Force awarded him the Distinguished Public Service Medal for leading “a historic transformation to ensure it operates more like a corporate board of directors.”  Florida Governor Jeb Bush appointed him to the State Board of Education, which oversees all public education in Florida. Mr. Garcia has a J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was the first student in his class to publish on the Columbia Law Review.  He has an M.P.A. from the University of Oklahoma; and a B.S. from the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he was awarded the Class of 1983 Honor and Ethics Trophy given to the graduate who “most personified the ideals of personal integrity.”  In 1988, he was awarded a White House Fellowship by President Reagan.  He served in various high level positions in the federal government, receiving the Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez Public Service and Integrity award. The book Hispanics in the USA: Making History chose Mr. Garcia as one of fourteen Latino role models for the nation, and both Hispanic Business and Latino Leaders magazines recognized him as one of the “100 most influential Hispanics in the United States.”  He has authored two best-selling leadership books:  A Message from Garcia (John Wiley, 2003) and Leadership Lessons of the White House Fellows (McGraw Hill, 2009).   He writes regularly for CNN, Fox News and the Huffington Post. Our "How To" episode: how to design a book cover, how to correctly use the terms “Latino” and “Hispanic,” and how to revive your relationship with the arts. 1:06 - This week, members of the nonprofit Business for Culture and the Arts closed up shop. The group’s members worked for nearly 30 years to build bridges between the arts and business communities. But the board and members voted Thursday to dissolve operations, handing over some of its programs to the Regional Arts and Culture Council, RACC. We look at what a healthy business/arts relationship might look like. 9:52 - Portland comics artist and illustrator Terry Blas's dad was born in the U.S. and his mom in Mexico. He used to use the terms “Latino” and “Hispanic” interchangeably, but he doesn’t any more. This summer, he published a comic on Vox-dot-com about how he explains his heritage. And, as of this week, it’s been shared over 170-thousand times. 14:43 - The son of a professional treasure hunter, Nate Fasold hunts down famous guitars played by the like of Elliott Smith and Kurt Cobain from his shop on North Mississippi Avenue. 23:06 - Tonight is a fundraiser for the next stage in Portland MC Mic Crenshaw’s African Hip-Hop Caravan. It's a group made up of hip-hop collectives across the continent, including in Cape Town, Harare, Arusha and Nairobi, that aims to talk about the current state of African hip-hop. Crenshaw tells us about his last caravan trip. 33:17 - Sure, you shouldn't judge a book by a cover. But don't tell that to the designers behind some of the excellent and award-winning covers at the local publisher Tin House. They lay out their hands-on process. 39:43 - The Britt Music and Arts Festival in Jacksonville commissioned a new work about Crater Lake by composer Michael Gordon. Gordon co-founded Bang On A Can, a music festival and collective, and his compositions have been performed around the world by the likes of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Kronos Quartet. Think Out Loud's Dave Miller talked with Gordon about the lakes serenity and violence.
