"A young woman to look up to." That perfectly describes today's guest, Paulina Maria Venezia Molteni. At just 20 years old, Paulina is already deeply involved in a variety of organisations and has launched several of her own projects. It's no surprise that she has recently won the prestigious Young Women in Public Leadership Award at the regional, district, and international level! The award issued by Zonta International, recognizes young women aged 16 to 19 who demonstrate leadership, dedication to public service and a passion for creating positive change in their communities. She is an active volunteer with several environmental and human rights organisations, including Fridays for Future and International Justice Mission (IJM). Among her many achievements, she staged a play about femicides, organised a queer art exhibition to support emerging queer artists and advocates for women and people of colour in STEM fields. Stay tuned to learn more about Paulina's inspiring projects and her future plans. For young women eager to make a difference, the next application deadline is 31 January 2025. International Justice Mission wants tech companies to step up efforts to protect vulnerable children.Warning: distressing content. The Philippines is the global epicentre of the online sexual exploitation of children, where children are abused by parents and other relatives in their own homes, in front of a video camera, for a fee. It's awful and sickening trade in vulnerable human lives, one that's particularly insidious since it distorts a child's relationship with their primary caregivers and that transforms a child's home – the exact place they should be safe – into a predatory environment of abuse. And Australians are the third-highest consumers of this content worldwide, paying for these crimes to be live-streamed, and often through commonly used social media platforms and video conferencing tools.International Justice Mission (IJM) works to end modern slavery, partnering with NGOs, social workers, child advocates, faith communities, and law enforcement to bring about justice for survivors of trafficking, and to strengthen justice systems to hold offenders accountable. The organisation is now advocating for greater online safety, including pressuring tech companies to be more intentional about child safety from the point of product design.Life & Faith spoke to Gigi Tupas, head of National Activation and Partnerships at IJM Philippines, and Grace Wong, Chief Advocacy Officer, IJM Australia, to hear about what's happening on the ground.Explore: Support the work of International Justice Mission by becoming a Freedom Partner. In Episode 5 of My Epiphany we meet Mary Sebastian who works for International Justice Mission (IJM) as a Senior Advocacy Advisor.A qualified lawyer from India, Mary tells a story about a young girl she met who grew up in the same state was trafficked by her own Aunt. As a young professional, she struggled to come to terms with the fact that it was another woman who exploited her. The very people who she should have been able to trust were the ones to exploit her in such an unimaginably cruel way. What really hit home for Mary was when she realised that the young woman in front of her represented just one of a whole village of girls and young women who had been trafficked and forced to work in commercial sexual exploitation. Mary shares with us how she has witnessed many women and girls having to crawl out of the darkness into the light during her career.HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVEDEducate: Modern slavery is happening to people in the UK, in your town, in cities, on farms, and to people your age.

Gary Haugen's firsthand experience investigating systemic human rights abuses helped him recognize a troubling pattern: people living in the world's poorest communities experienced constant physical danger because their local justice systems weren't equipped to defend them from the violence they faced every day. Haugen was told that this would never change, but he believed otherwise, leading to the founding of International Justice Mission (IJM). Since 1997, IJM's reach has expanded globally into 31 program offices in 16 countries working to combat trafficking and slavery, violence against women and children and police abuse of power.Still, these issues of violence persist, affecting millions around the world – an estimated 50 million people live modern slavery globally and nearly 736 million women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.Government officials in the United States are uniquely positioned to create policies and foreign assistance programs that protect vulnerable people from these human rights abuses. How can policymakers work to increase access to justice, hold criminals accountable, and reduce the prevalence of violence and exploitation?Support the show

Weltweit, so unser Gesprächspartner Dietmar Roller, leben 50 Millionen Menschen in moderner Sklaverei. Show Notes In this episode, Mimi and Kim interview Brad Twedt of International Justice Mission (IJM). Gary Haugen is the CEO & Founder of International Justice Mission (IJM), a global human rights organization that works to protect the poor from violence. The context here is not one of war, conflict or mass atrocities but, rather, the everyday violence present in many low-income and marginalized communities around the globe, such as gender violence, forced labor, human trafficking, sexual violence, police abuse and land theft. The issue is multifaceted, and so is our conversation. Are the proper laws in place to protect a country's citizens? Is there political will to protect those who are most marginalized? Are laws being enforced? Are social norms exacerbating the problem? IJM was founded 26 years ago and today has around 1,500 staff based in 30 offices across the globe. IJM works with national governments and local stakeholders. Their teams are local and include lawyers, criminal investigators, trauma social workers and local advocates. This episode looks at poverty from an angle of violence prevention. The conversation will inform you and provide insight on IJM's drive to transform local justice systems to protect those living in poverty. Injustice is the second most talked about sin in the Bible following idolatry. God is calling His followers to advocate for the marginalized. In this episode of Where Ya From?, Jenn Petersen, the Director of Mobilization for International Justice Mission (IJM) and co-lead pastor of Resurrection Life NYC, shares with host, Rasool Berry, some of the most unimaginable cases of injustice she witnessed that sparked the passion and question, “God, what can I do to make a difference?” Guest Bio: Jenn Petersen serves as Director of Mobilization, NYC, for the International Justice Mission. She is also co-leader and founder of Resurrection Life NYC; a multi-ethnic congregation on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Jenn holds a Masters of Divinity from Wesley Seminary along with a Bachelors of Music from the University of Northern Iowa. Jenn's passion for justice and worship allows her to work with churches, businesses, and non-profit organizations in every domain of the city to advocate for and share the heart of justice God has for the broken and enslaved men, women, and children. She currently lives in Harlem with her husband Branden, their two children, and their dog, Charlie. Notes & Quotes: “Sometimes you just need to stop and ask, ‘God, what do your people need and how can I help them?” “Injustice is the second biggest sin the Bible talks about after idolatry.” “You can do the work of God by using what He's already put in your hands.” “Be who God has uniquely created you to be.” “IJM (International Justice Mission) has already rescued 66,000 people.” Links Mentioned: Read about the IJM (International Justice Mission) on their website. IJM partners with local authorities in 14 countries to combat slavery, violence against women and children, and other forms of abuse against people who are poor. Sam joined IJM's Team Freedom in 2018 which is a team of pro athletes committed to using the global power and influence of sports. During Super Bowl week, Sam is helping launch Team Freedom's latest initiative “Free to Play.” Free to Play and Team Freedom are creating a world where children are free to play, free to dream, free to live safely. Also, Sam will launch the Bart Starr Award Youth Camp, an NFL sanctioned event. The camp will host 150 kids from LA area where they will learn football skills and strengthen body, soul, and mind. While these kids are “free to play” football, those kids who are trapped in situations of online sexual exploitation where IJM works are not free and it is why IJM and SAM chose to keep showing up on behalf of the vulnerable.
Micah 6:8This week we had Zoe from International Justice Mission (IJM) come to speak to us.
This episode is going to blow you away. For many years, I trained standout MLB catcher Nick Hundley to be the best athlete he could be. And while he played professional baseball at a very high level for 11-years, what he's doing now is even way bigger and more IMPACTFUL. As a matter of fact, Nick's role with the International Justice Mission (IJM) is to help protect again human trafficking and violence against women and children. He works on literally saving and rescuing young girls, women, and people enslaved to horrific crimes that happen in communities you would never imagine. Specifically, this is what we cover in today's episode: - Nick's story, how he got into MLB, and how he played for so long. - Reminiscing about his “training days” with his workout group and his favorite parts of those days. - Working alongside former pitcher, and now GM of the Texas Rangers, Chris Young. - What is “IJM”-- seeking to protect people in poverty from violence, abuse, and human trafficking. - How bad is human trafficking? - Nick shares stories on the rescue of these girls and the goal to prosecute the people who are committing these horrific crimes. - The tremendous success stories of many of these girls. - Advice to anyone facing adversity in their life. My mind was blown in this episode and I thank the IJM and all those who are fighting for the good of mankind, including Nick Hundley. You're going to enjoy this convo and marvel at what an amazing organization the IJM is and the IMPACT they are creating. Please be sure to share today's episode. It will help the IJM fulfill its mission to rescue millions, protect half a billion and make justice unstoppable. Thank you! And please tag... I believe you will leave this episode changed, as I did. Anu answers questions like... What do you believe are the greatest factors that would bring an end to slavery in our lifetime? How has COVID impacted the needs that IJM is addressing? Where do you see God moving in this fight? Today we are kicking off our PROTECT THE WEAK series with an organization who knows a thing or two about protecting others. International Justice Mission is a organization that was created to END modern day slavery. Their proven solution consists of rescuing and restoring victims, bringing criminals to justice, and strengthening justice systems. Today’s guest is Philip Langford the President of International Justice Mission (IJM). Philip has spent his life rescuing, restoring, and educating the world on modern day slavery. Since joining IJM in 2006, Philip has led IJM field programs in Southeast Asia, Africa and South Asia to strengthen justice systems to protect the poor from slavery and human trafficking, gender-based violence and police abuse of power. During his time as Vice President of Regional Operations for Southeast Asia, Philip led IJM’s programs in the region to combat cross-border labor trafficking in domestic and multi-national supply chains and the global proliferation of online sexual exploitation of children. Prior to working in Southeast Asia, as Vice President of Regional Operations for Africa, Philip led IJM’s field programs across Eastern, Western and Southern Africa targeting child labor trafficking, gender-based violence and police abuse. Most of us don’t even realize this exists not just in foreign countries but in our own. Philip and I talk about what it looks like to live a life on behalf of others well-being, why we need getting out of our comfort zones is the biggest blessing, and how right now we can help those who are being treated unfairly. Philip has seen the atrocities of slavery, but he has also seen the beauty that can come from rescue and restoration. Philip gives us hope and the tools to be the change. How many people can say they work undercover to bring justice to some of the world’s most vulnerable people? --- “I thought I was prepared for this work, but I really wasn’t. My three years in India ... hardest three years of my life, of all the things I've done, including being in the Marines. But it's three years that I wouldn't trade for anything. You couldn't have paid me a million dollars a year to do something different.” He was a Marine, then a cop for decades; he worked undercover investigating drug cartels and the Mexican mafia, as well as with the FBI on police corruption cases. As if that weren’t enough careers for one guy, he’s gone back undercover - now for International Justice Mission (IJM), which works to end slavery. The thing is, because of the nature of his work, we can’t tell you his name. Meet Investigator V. “Honestly, my first reaction was, what slavery? I don't believe that. The IJM recruiter told me, back in 2007, 'There's 27 million slaves in the world, we were wondering if you would come help us?' I instinctively said, 'No, there's not. How can that be?’” In this deeply moving episode, V tells Simon and Natasha stories of rescuing young girls from sex trafficking, and what it’s like when a rescue mission fails. He describes how it feels to encounter evil like this, and how he thinks - or tries to - about the perpetrators. And he explains why he wouldn’t prefer to be using his retirement to play golf - as nice as that would be. "I don't think there's anything that can prepare you for a little girl being raped every day, or a young boy that's been enslaved and starving to death, and stand in front of him, and do undercover work and act like you're there for nefarious purposes. I don't know what preparation would prepare you for that … But I'll tell you what, being involved in this work has been so good. It's dark, it's evil, it's ugly, it's costly. But the joy and the purpose that comes from it is just hard to describe.” --- Find out more about IJM Australia here.

This conversation has been brought to you by...Canadian coffee shop parking lots! Naomi is a busy wife and momma who runs a business. She lives in the Canadian mountainside and when it was time for our interview, she had to scramble to get to town for a better internet connection. After 1.5 hours of sitting in her car outside her local cafe, we had ourselves one of my favorite interviews to date. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or go to my website: www.heartfelthippie.com This conversation was not my favorite because it was a fun topic. It was a hard topic, actually, and an uncomfortable one. Many of us talk about the effects that slavery has had on our society, but we talk about it like slavery no longer exists. That's far from the truth. In fact, there are more people enslaved today than have ever been before. Sexual exploitation is one of these cruel forms of human bondage, and that's what Naomi is working towards bringing to an end. With her small business making adorable jewelry, she donates half of her proceeds to various organizations that are fighting human trafficking. While this interview centers on a sensitive topic that you might not want little ears to listen to, Naomi will share why it's still one that we need to educate our kids on. The average age for a person to be captured into sex slavery is 13. Did you catch that? 13 years young! Educating our children can potentially protect them from ever running the risk of being exploited. You might be thinking that this would never happen to your own child, but in this interview you will hear how something so tragic can happen to a seemingly “normal” kid, and how this is currently taking place in our very own cities. As always, this conversation isn't meant to make you feel sad about the topic at hand. While I hope it stirs up feelings in you, I hope it equally empowers you to take action. There are practical steps that you and I can take to bring human slavery to an end. Ending the human slave trade IS possible in our lifetime, but first we need to learn about how we may be unknowingly contributing to the billion-dollar industry.
