Dale Earnhardt Jr welcomes in his father's championship-winning crew chief Doug Richert for a special edition of the Dale Jr Download. On the heels of the Becoming Earnhardt: 1980 series, the two dive into Dale Earnhardt's sophomore season & first Cup Championship. Doug was only 20 years old at the time, but he has plenty of stories to tell. Doug's relationship with Dale Earnhardt went beyond the race track, as he shares stories of the two of them spending time waterskiing on the lake in between race weekends. The #2 team started the season swinging, winning the Busch Clash in Daytona. From there, the team won races at Atlanta & Bristol and were early contenders for the Winston Cup Championship. In the middle of the season, Crew Chief Jake Elder leaves the team, suddenly putting Doug in charge. He talks about the abrupt transition to the Crew Chief role and what challenges he and the team faced. Dale and Doug discuss the #2 team's main opponents and how they weren't afraid to ruffle feathers along the way. Doug also shares the story of winning the championship at Ontario and why he got in trouble for taking an unauthorized victory lap in Dale's car. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade three years ago, the question of abortion's legality and availability returned to the states. As of now, abortion remains broadly legal in more than 30 states and Washington, D.C. In some, like Kansas, Missouri and Montana, abortion is still legal largely because of voters. But while Trump spent a lot of time on the campaign trail trying to avoid the topic of abortion, his new tax and spending law proves that the GOP has stayed laser focused on restricting the rights of everyday Americans. It contains a provision that prevents health care nonprofits like Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion care provider, from receiving Medicaid reimbursements for one year for ANY services – even those not related to abortion. Mary Ziegler, a professor at UC Davis School of Law who focuses on the history and politics of reproduction, healthcare and conservatism, explains how the new law could limit your ability to access health care and threaten Planned Parenthood. And in headlines: Trump announced the U.S. will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, a bunch of states sued the Trump administration for withholding money for after-school care and English language programs, and former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced he'll stay in the race to be New York City's next mayor.Show Notes:Check out Mary's work – workstatecourtreport.org/about/mary-zieglerCall Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

On a day www.fox4kc.com reports that if the Royals leave it will be Mayor Q's fault, we learn that Frank White has blown it again for Jackson County.  If/when the Royals and Chiefs leave the sports complex, it will definitely be more of a Frank White problem than the mayor.  In a recent letter to the governor, White offers to cut off the Royals completely AND lower the money the Chiefs get from a 3/8 cent sales tax.   Between he two of them, it has to be over in Jackson County.    I met a friend yesterday, not a conservative, and we had a chatty waiter.  What happened when the waiter asked what I do for a living was an eye opening moment for the young man, if only he wanted to open his eyes.  I was literally talking to two people that will save $16,800 between them in federal taxes next year and don't believe it's true.    The Kansas economy is ranked third to the bottom of states in the country, the first lady is helping Trump with his Russia policy and Lambert Field in St. Louis had a waiting line out the door almost to I-70 yesterday.   In sports, the Big Dumper wins the home run derby, the Royals have the easiest schedule in the league the rest of the way and Fox Sports 1 fires almost everybody.  Then, our Final Final is buyer beware if you're trying to become an extra on the set of Ted Lasso filming in KC.

This week, a special road trip episode featuring Celtic-American Roots music “super group” RUNA recorded live at the 2024 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield Kansas, a four day acoustic music marathon and arts & crafts fair held every September in Winfield, Kansas. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound, that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. Celebrating fourteen years together as a band, Celtic-American Roots music “super group” RUNA continues to push the boundaries of Irish folk music into the Americana and roots music formats. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of jazz, bluegrass, flamenco and blues, they offer a thrilling and redefining take on traditional music. Seeking to preserve and continue a traditional culture in a modern age, RUNA creates the backbone of its signature roots sound from the musical and geographical diversity of its individually established band members.  Their strive for excellence and creativity blazes a trail for the future of folk music, earning them the reputation as one of the most innovative Irish folk groups of this generation. RUNA consists of vocalist Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia, Dublin-born guitarist, Fionán de Barra, acclaimed drummer Cheryl Prashker (Full Frontal Folk, Jonathan Edwards), fiddler Jake James of New York, and three-time Canadian fiddle champion Tom Fitzgerald, who also plays mandolin. - https://runamusic.com/about In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of Ozark original Mike McGhee performing the Classic Child ballad “Barbara Allen,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater profiles the legendary Ozark song catcher, Mary Celestia Parler.

Marc and former State Senator John Lamping analyze recent Missouri legislation signed by Governor Kehoe, focusing on the economic and political impacts. They discuss the contentious stadium funding bill benefiting the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, highlighting how the St. Louis Cardinals stand to gain hundreds of millions for stadium upgrades despite sitting out the negotiations. Lamping shares his candid view on the Chiefs and Royals potentially moving to Kansas and expresses indifference toward the Royals. They also cover Kehoe's surprising mix of consensus-driven politics—supporting both school choice and increased public school funding—and recent laws such as the K-12 cell phone ban and free in-state college tuition for first responders' kids. The conversation critiques government expansion masked as incentives, stresses the importance of property rights, and warns of looming fiscal constraints due to Medicaid funding changes. The segment closes with a nod to Ethan's contribution to the show's new intro music.

Rerun: How Native American Ecology Can Tackle Climate Anxiety, with Dr. Melinda Adams

    ClimateBreak

Climate Change and Anxiety: Some Data Climate or “eco” anxiety refers to people feeling distressed about climate change and its impacts on our ecosystems, the environment, and human health and well-being. It is rooted in a deep existential dread concerning the future of the planet. Symptoms include feelings of grief, loss, anger, sadness, and guilt, which in turn can cause jitteriness, nervousness, increased heart rate, shallow breathing, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite, or insomnia due to worry or concern about the effects of climate change. According to Grist, Google searches for “climate anxiety” soared by 565 percent in 2021. And according to the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, an all-time high of 70 percent of Americans express worry about climate change. In September 2021, the largest study of its kind found that the climate crisis was causing widespread psychological distress for young people between the ages of 16 and 25 across 42 countries from both the global North and South. Over 45 percent of teens and young adults said that climate anxiety was affecting their daily lives and ability to function; 56 percent said they thought that "humanity is doomed" and nearly 4 in 10 said that they were hesitant to have children because of climate change. From Solastalgia to Soliphilia: how Native American Ecology can lead the wayThe steps people must take to address their climate anxiety depends on each individual, as people are affected by climate change in different ways. For example, some people have lost homes or even loved ones, while many others have witnessed these catastrophic events unfold on their phone screens.Dr. Melinda Adams describes this trauma as “solastalgia,” originally coined by Australian philosopher Glen Albrecht to describe the distress caused by the destruction or loss of one's home environment. This concept helps people to understand and express the “psychoterratic,” or the relationship between human mental health and the earth's own well-being. Many have taken legal and political action to deal with their solastalgia. For example, last year Montana youths sued the state for its failure to recognize that approving fossil fuel projects was unconstitutional without further review of the impacts to the climate. Others have drastically altered their lifestyles, opting instead to practice underconsumption to limit their personal contributions to the changing climate. Dr. Adams has another solution, reminding those who suffer that the definition of solastalgia also includes hope. Hope can lead us either into action or ecoparalysis. It is within this framework that Dr. Adams introduces Native American cultural burnings as a way to achieve soliphilia, “the political affiliation or solidarity needed between us all to be responsible for a place, bioregion, planet, and the unity of interrelated interests within it.'' Cultural fires or “good fires,” which involve lighting low-intensity fires to heal the surrounding ecosystem, can exemplify this step. Not only do these fires restore degraded soils, decrease vegetation or fuel overgrowth, encourage re-vegetation and biodiversity, but they also deepen the spiritual ties people have to the land they inhabit. Fire therefore has a regenerative power, both spiritually and ecologically, as participants share stories and strengthen communal and spiritual bonds with one another during these ceremonial burnings. As a member of the N'dee San Carlos Apache Tribe, Dr. Adams takes Glen Albrecht's theory of the “psychoterratic” and frames it as a relationship between siblings. Subsequently, as siblings, humans and the land must help each other survive. By treating the earth as a more-than-human sibling, and by practicing cultural burns, participants can begin to heal from their solastalgia. Directly engaging with a regenerative process such as “good fires,” “grounds people's intentions and allows for deeper connections—to place and among one another.” “[C]eremonial fires create opportunities for social, environmental, and cultural healing among young persons (Native and allied)” (Tom, Adams, & Goode at 3). Essentially, the strengthening of community through spiritually uplifting activities alleviates climate anxiety by showing young people that there are people out there who share their concern for the climate and are motivated to do something about it. Who is our guest?Dr. Melinda Adams is a member of the N'dee San Carlos Apache Tribe and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Atmospheric Science at the University of Kansas. A cultural fire practitioner and scholar, her research focuses on the revitalization of cultural fire with Tribes in California and more recently with Tribes in the Midwest. Her work with Indigenous communities combines environmental science, environmental policy, and Indigenous studies methodologies. And he is also a grandfather. In this episode we discuss the following: I was touched by Avi's vulnerability in sharing how listening has saved his life—twice. After his daughter died by suicide, it was the listening community that Avi had cultivated that helped him carry on, even as his pain and sorrow endured. One friend, in particular, asked Avi to recount the last day he spent with his daughter—and then told him she'd listen to that story 100 more times if he needed to. Listening saved Avi again during an exercise where he realized he'd spent five years on a project simply to prove a point, rather than because he valued it. That moment launched Avi's mission to become a better listener every day of his life. I was especially intrigued by how Avi doesn't dwell on people's listening mistakes. Instead, he helps them discover how to improve. And he extends the same compassion to himself when he falls short.  He simply notices and praises his awareness.  I was impressed by how present Avi was with me, encouraging me to take my time and then referenced earlier parts of our conversation, demonstrating that he truly heard me.  Because of this conversation, I have adopted Avi's goal: to become a better listener every day. And because of this interview, Avi will soon be coming to Kansas to teach a listening seminar, and I cannot wait to learn more from him. When someone truly listens, it creates a magical space-- a meeting of the minds where ideas emerge that could not have been reached alone.     Connect on Social Media: X: https://twitter.com/nate_meikle LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natemeikle/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nate_meikle/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@nate.meikle

Scott Carter is our guest on this episode. He is the coordinator of the office for the Beatification of Venerable Fr. Emil Kapaun. Fr. Kapaun is one of the newest deceased persons to be declared Venerable by the late Pope Francis in February 2025, which is a step closer to being declared a saint in the Catholic Church. Fr. Kapaun is best known for his faith-filled and heroic participation in the Korean war. Scott tells us about the young Emil's penchant for being an outdoorsman at a young age and his love for sports while he was in the seminary. Fr. Kapaun was ordained on June 9, 1949, and was assigned to a parish in Kansas. Fr. Kapaun's real calling was to minister to and serve soldiers in the war. He served as a chaplain in World War II and returned to the States when the war ended. In 1949 the Army put out a letter requesting chaplains for the Korean War and Fr. Kapaun told his bishop that he wanted to go. Scott says that Fr. Kapaun had a missionary spirit. There is an iconic picture of Fr. Kapaun celebrating Mass on the hood of a jeep. While in the Korean War, Fr. Kapaun was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Medal of Honor for saving a soldier about to be shot. Eventually Fr. Kapaun was captured and sent to a prison camp. While in the prison camp, Fr. Kapaun did everything he could to help his fellow prisoners maintain their dignity while encouraging those that wanted to give up. While his captors took Fr. Kapaun to his death, he asked forgiveness for any wrong he might have done to any one of them. Throughout his life and at the hour of his death, Fr. Kapaun put his faith into action. Miraculously, Fr. Kapaun's remains were found many years after his death in Korea and were returned to Kansas where he is buried at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Wichita. Scott ends the podcast by recalling a reflection given by Fr. Kapaun on the radio in Tokyo in April of 1950 on the Beatitude found in Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers…” Scott asks anyone who is praying for the intercession of Fr. Kapaun to contact him at the website listed below. For more information about Fr. Kapaun and/or to contact Scott: Venerable Emil J. Send us a textThe enduring legend of Belle Starr, America's notorious "Bandit Queen," culminates in this riveting final episode that traces her tragic demise and extraordinary posthumous transformation. After the death of her husband Sam Starr in 1886, Belle found herself in a desperate legal battle to keep her beloved home at Younger's Bend. The Cherokee Tribal Council delivered devastating news – as a non-citizen, her claim to the land had vanished with her husband's passing. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, she quickly formed a strategic alliance with Jim July, a young man of Creek and Cherokee heritage, securing her homestead through this new marriage while agreeing to stop harboring fugitives.Despite her attempts to reform, the shadows of Belle's past continued to circle. By February 1889, she had accumulated a long list of potential enemies – from her disgruntled neighbor Edgar Watson to her own resentful son Ed Reed. On February 3rd, just days before her 41st birthday, Belle was ambushed on a lonely stretch of road near Eufaula. The attack was brutal and cowardly – shot in the back with what many believe was her own double-barreled shotgun, then finished off as she lay wounded on the cold ground. Though she was found still alive and brought home to her daughter Pearl, her injuries proved fatal. The investigation into Belle's murder exemplifies frontier justice at its most ineffective. Despite compelling evidence against prime suspect Edgar Watson, including distinctive footprints at the crime scene, he was acquitted due to insufficient evidence and reluctant witnesses. The mystery of who killed Belle Starr remains unsolved to this day, adding another layer to her fascinating legend. It was her violent death that catapulted her from local notoriety to national fame, as sensationalized newspaper accounts caught the attention of publisher Richard K. Fox. His 1889 paperback "Belle Starr, the Bandit Queen" reinvented her as a beautiful, educated Southern belle driven to crime to avenge her Confederate brother's death – a romantic fabrication far removed from the complex reality of the woman who had just one conviction for horse theft.Belle's grave at Younger's Bend bears the poetic inscription: "Shed not for her the bitter tear... 'Tis but the casket that lies here, the gem that fills it, sparkles yet." These words perfectly capture the essence of the Belle Starr phenomenon – the transformation of a frontier woman into an enduring symbol of the Wild West. Since 2017, this captivating show has transported listeners back to frontier America through its perfect tagline: "where fact and legend merge."What makes this podcast truly exceptional is the extraordinary partnership that brings each episode to life. Michael King serves as the meticulous researcher and writer, crafting historically accurate narratives that go beyond the audio medium into carefully illustrated dime novel-style publications. This isn't just historical recounting—it's a deliberate homage to the very format that originally popularized Western tales 150 years ago. Meanwhile, Brad Smalley delivers each story with authentic frontier gravitas, his signature "Howdy from Dodge City" greeting backed by genuine credentials as a local Boot Hill gunfighter and historical reenactor. When Smalley narrates, you're not just hearing history; you're connecting with someone deeply embedded in the traditions and physical space that shaped these legendary tales. While other Western podcasts cast wide nets across the entire frontier or rely on cinematic production values, the Wild West Podcast takes a different approach. By focusing intensely on Dodge City and prioritizing substance over flash, King and Smalley have created something remarkably authentic. Their 260+ episodes, typically running 20-30 minutes each, cover both iconic figures and obscure historical moments with equal dedication. The result? A show that's reached listeners in 150 countries and maintains an impressive 4.6-star rating. It proves something powerful about storytelling today: in our digital age, deeply local knowledge delivered through genuine voices can resonate globally, ensuring these complex, sometimes contradictory, but eternally fascinating chapters of American history continue to echo for generations to come. Paul Shirley, former NBA basketball player turned productivity guru, returns to the podcast for a conversation with Bridget that takes us from his Kansas farm origins (where apparently growing your own food creates a family of giants) to battling what he calls the "Distraction Industrial Complex." Paul breaks down why we're all suffering from "informational diabetes" in an age where we consume 74 GB of data daily—the same amount our ancestors got in a lifetime. Between near-death basketball injuries, discovering Denver's anti-alcohol movement, and explaining why Gen Z has basically become a different species, Bridget and Paul discuss how our shortcut-obsessed culture has left us busier than ever despite all our time-saving tech. Paul's solution? "The Process"—a system that treats focused work like mammoth hunting and proves that sometimes the best way forward is to actually slow down and break things into 25-minute chunks of focused work. Part sports psychology, part cultural commentary, it's the kind of conversation that makes you want to immediately turn off your phone and actually accomplish something meaningful. Check out Paul's Book - The Art of Focused Work - https://bit.ly/44uKe6o --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sponsor Links: - Quest offers 100+ lab tests to empower you to have more control over your health journey. Carson has become known for his unique approach to Cup stardom, be it weird hats or streaming on iRacing during rain delays. He fills Dale in on what drives this approach, specifically how he managed to get an iRacing rig onto the Spire Motorsports hauler, and how he has even gone into the garage after hours to sim race. Dale and Carson discuss social media content and their respective styles of creation. Carson recently came into hot water for comments he made on a stream surrounding the NASCAR trip to Mexico City. The guys discuss Carson's growth from the incident and how this is part of the process of growing up in the spotlight.Carson talks about his path to the Cup Series, which began at home in Michigan in the quarter midget division. He explains that through help from former NASCAR driver Johnny Benson, he found his way into the late model world, and eventually landed a ride with Niece Motorsports in the Truck Series. Dale and Carson discuss his time at Spire Motorsports and how he seems to be helping the team elevate to the next level, as he has found himself running at the front this season in contention for wins.
