Coach Chris Hunter,In this episode, you'll hear from Chris Hunter. Chris is currently the Director of Basketball Operations for Coach Juwan Howard at the University of Michigan. Chris is in year eight with the Wolverines. And, Chris has had the opportunity to work for both Coach Howard and Coach John Beilein. As you soon will hear, Chris is a Michigan Man. A graduate of Michigan and a four-year player at Michigan, Chris embarked on a professional basketball career that was a product of massive determination to get to his ultimate dream: that is, playing in the NBA. After stops in Switzerland, Poland, and Belgium, Chris returned to the United States to play with the NBA Development League's Fort Wayne Mad Ants. And in 2009, he was named to the 2009 NBADL All-Star Team. Through endless hard work and massive self-belief, Chirs participated in two training camps with the New York Knicks. And, during the 2009-10 season, Chris made it to the NBA. Coach Hunter played in 60 games, starting nine, with the NBA's Golden State Warriors. After his professional career was over, Chris instantly knew that he wanted to give back and do the same that so many coaches in his own life had done for him. In this conversation, Chris depicts so many interesting behind-the-scenes facts that confirm why Coach Howard's Wolverines were Big 10 Champions and an Elite 8 team last season. Coach Hunter's perspective on the importance of details and culture will, for sure, have you evaluating your own coaching philosophy. After listening to Coach Hunter, you will appreciate that this is a man of deep thought and introspective. Coach Hunter's thoughts on the “big picture” are as good as anything that has been shared on this podcast. Trust me, this is a must-listen. Whether you are in competitive athletic leadership or leading your office or leading your own family, Chris's comments on this topic are simply terrific. As a matter of fact, the last ten minutes of this action-packed leadership-driven podcast are so good. And guess what? Chris is as humble as they come. To me, this podcast is evident why Chris Hunter is adored by his co-workers and players at the University of Michigan. I am so fortunate to share a small part of his coaching story.Follow Coach Chris Hunter @biggame_hunterFollow Tell Me Your Story Coach @CoachKevinDro Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Glad you could join the losers who thought this would be a good idea! We're first diving deep into what we believe should be the proper route any top high school basketball athlete should take. Would it be more beneficial in the long run for them to go down the NCAA Division 1 path or join the up and coming NBA Development League (0:00-41:50). Then join us in drafting the perfect Team USA Basketball team consisting of PROFESSIONAL NBA stars of the 80s and early 90s to rep the good ole Stars and Stripes (42:00-1:08:00)! We conclude then with why we believe the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is far superior to the NFLPA and what NFL players can do to bridge the gap between ownership and players (1:08:05-end). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/notyourweeklysportspod/message

We chat with Philadelphia 76ers Assistant Coach Kevin Young, now in his 4th year with Brett Brown. We talk shutdown operations for players & coaches, and the opportunity for learning during this time, as well as tracing his steps to the NBA. Young's path to the front row with the historic franchise was long and challenging - personally, financially, and otherwise. Landing an unexpectedly early role as a head coach in Ireland put Young on a different track. Learning the ropes of management and leadership at 23 on an international stage matured Young, and when he returned to the US, he jumped at the opportunity to become a low-level assistant in the then-fledgling NBA Development League. During that time in what Young calls "the wild wild West", he went from driving the team van to head coach with three different franchises. 9 years in the D League set Young up for the call-up to the NBA. Thanks again for listening.

Will Voigt, Rethinking Defensive Concepts Guest: Will Voigt, Angola National Team Head Coach Bring an atlas along as the amazingly well-travelled Will Voight brings his fascinating resume to The Basketball Podcast, including hoops talk about his current role as the head coach of the national men's team of Angola. Voigt's early days were in rural Cabot, Vermont, shooting hoops on the side of a barn, but he went cross-country to Pomona College in Claremont, California, for college, where he lettered in soccer and earned a political science degree. He served as an intern for the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers for the 1998-99, and progressed to video coordinator with the San Antonio Spurs for the two subsequent seasons. The next step was taking an assistant's role for coach Rick Barnes at the University of Texas at Austin for a season, followed by another year as an assistant, this time for the 2002-03 Metro State Roadrunners in Denver, with coach Mike Dunlap. Then the journey really began. From 2002-06, Voigt worked with the Norwegian squad, Ulriken Elite, as a head coach. He got called home, by a fan vote yet, to coach theVermont Frost Heaves to back-to-back ABA Championships, serving there until 2009. Similarly, the fans wanted him so he went to the NBA Development League's Bakersfield Jam in California, sticking around until 2014. For 2014-15, Voigt was an assistant coach with the Chinese Basketball Association's Shanxi Brave Dragons. Up next came a head coaching gig with the Nigerian men's team, where the team took the AfroBasket 2015 title, earning an automatic berth in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Another African team, Angola, signed Voigt to a three-year deal to run its national team in November 2017. “I’ve been fortunate to have had these opportunities,” Voigt told USA Today in 2016. “I didn’t set out with a blueprint of how do I get to China? How do I get to Norway? How do I get to Nigeria? It just presented itself. I certainly wasn’t afraid of going somewhere different. The way it’s played out, I don’t think I could have ever predicted.” Breakdown 1:00 - Preparation for FIBA World Cup 2:00 - Roster Flexibility 4:00 - Planning Based on Who We Played Against 6:00 - Experience In the G-League 8:00 - Knowing Opponent’s Personnel 10:00 - Rid of 4-Man Shell 12:30 - “When the ball moves, 5 man moves with it” 15:00 - Talking about Peel Switching 21:00 - Application of Peel Switching 23:00 - Transferring the Peel Switching to his Offense 25:00 - Not Playing in a US Style of Play 28:00 - Takeaway as a coach from International Standpoint 30:30 - Things to do To Avoid Rotation in Defense 33:00 - Player’s Accountability on Rotation 36:20 - People Don’t Help Off the Corners 39:30 - Timeout that Set Your Defense and the Value of Timeout 43:30 - Specific Formula or teaching Points for Two for Ones 48:00 - Conclusion Will Voight’s Bio Bio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Voigt Twitter: https://twitter.com/CoachWillVoigt Basketball Immersion Website: http://basketballimmersion.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/bballimmersion?lang=en YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/basketballimmersion Facebook: https://facebook.com/basketballimmersion
