Photo Credit: Tyler Follon - Wingman VisualsIn this episode of the Moral Imagination Podcast, I speak with Professor William Easterly of New York University about his work in development economics, and the problems of technocracy and social engineering of the poor. Easterly worked at the World Bank from 1985-2001 and began to be troubled by a number of things, including how aid is given without much concern about how it is distributed and managed thus subsidizing bad governance and harming the poor. We discuss Peter Bauer's critique of how foreign aid politicizes development and delayed the development of business in Africa, and Bauer's paradox of aid: * The countries that need aid — aid will not be effective* The countries where aid will be effective — do not need aid But the key problem with the dominant model of development is not simply a lack of efficiency, but the failure to respect the rights and agency of poor people. Easterly explains that development projects often result in people being deprived of their property, political rights, and participation and consent in the very projects that are supposed to help them. He discussed the tendency to to trivialize problems in the developing world, and the lack of feedback and market tests in development policy. We discuss how the developing world can often become a a lab for experiments for technocrats and social engineers. We also talk about Hayek's Knowledge Problem, a response to Marianna Mazucatto idea of moonshots, and what I call “embedded'“ economics. We discuss a number of issues including * “The Debate that Never Happened” - Gunnar Myrdal vs. Friedrich Hayek on development economics* Social Engineering * Technocracy and the Hubris of the Technocrat * Spontaneous Order* Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek * Soviet 5-year central planning as model for economic development * Limited Horizons of Humanitarianism— a secular, hollowed out version of Christian love the focuses on material at the expense of personal agency. * Lack of Accountability * Material vs. Non-material Needs * Materialist visions of the human person * People have a right to consent to their own progress * Harry Potter novels vs. Mosquito Nets * Marianna Mazucatto's ideas of Moonshots * vs. accidental discovery* vs opportunity costs * vs failed social engineering projects * and the complexity of economics and markets embedded in deep historical, cultural, norms, institutions, and religious foundations. * How to think about foreign aid and public goods like healthcare, infrastructure, education* Aid for emergencies vs. aid as answer to chronic poverty* Institutions of Justice including clear title to land, access to justice in the courts, ability to participate in the formal economy, and free exchange. * The impact of globalization on manufacturing in the US* Trade-offs and economic volatility * The moral rules that are needed for progress to beneficial * Consent, Self-Determination, Moral Equality * Attempts to develop Native Americans, US intervention in Philippines etc. * Material progress is never enough to justify interventionBiography William Easterly is Professor of Economics at New York University and Co-director of the NYU Development Research Institute, which won the 2009 BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge in Development Cooperation Award. He is the author of three books: The Tyranny of Experts: Economists, Dictators, and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor (March 2014), The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good (2006), which won the FA Hayek Award from the Manhattan Institute, and The Elusive Quest for Growth: Economists' Adventures and Misadventures in the Tropics (2001).He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed academic articles, and has written columns and reviews for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Review of Books, and Washington Post. He has served as Co-Editor of the Journal of Development Economics and as Director of the blog Aid Watch. He is a Research Associate of NBER, and senior fellow at the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD). Mimecast, a company started by two South Africans is a global leader in cybersecurity specialising in advanced email and collaboration security. After trading on Nasdaq for six years, the company decided to go private in November 2015 in a $5.8 billion deal with Permira. In an interview with Biznews, co-founder and former CEO Peter Bauer shared his journey from being a school leaver who opted not to attend university to starting his first business with 'oceans behind the ears'. Bauer explained how he was “hell-bent on getting into tech” in the early 90s. He recounted how his first company, which he sold to Idion, built the first news factory for what later became News24. After the sale, Bauer moved to London where he met fellow South African techie Neil Murray and started Mimecast. According to Bauer, “he fell in love with the process of building a company.” Discussing his decision to step down as Mimecast's CEO, Bauer emphasised that it was the right time to hand over the reins, with the appointed CEO, Mark van Zadelhoff, being the ideal candidate. However, Bauer remains engaged by staying on the board. He also revealed his shift from technology to eco and social justice projects, expressing a desire to support entrepreneurs. Bayer shared that he bought a mountain in Cape Town “by accident.” Additionally, he offered valuable insights for new tech entrepreneurs and discussed the increasing challenges that generative AI will have in predominantly digital workplaces
In this episode, Marc catches up with Mimecast CEO and co-founder Peter Bauer. They cover Peter's CEO journey, including what it was like growing up in South Africa, why he opted out of attending university, highlights from Mimecast's 20-year history, and what Peter learned from taking the company public — and then private again. You'll also learn: When and how to raise capital, and how to manage meeting the board's expectations. How CEOs can overcome self-doubt and continuously reimagine their role to look at challenges with new eyes. How to view the company's history as a story with chapters and eras, and why it's important to always believe you're at the beginning of the book.

In this episode, we're exploring the concept of Digital Twins.A Digital Twin is a virtual representation of a real-world physical counterpart, they use sophisticated data models to accurately simulate changes and problems, using the virtual environment to test and monitor potential scenarios without ever altering the physical counterpart – this enables users to run various simulations and to plan for, or prevent, any issues before they become a problem.Digital Twins are a powerful decision-making tool, but the system is reliant on data and can only be as good as the data it is provided with. One potential source of information is Earth Observation data collected from space. Guest: Dr. Peter Bauer, ECMWF Deputy Director of Research & Head of the Scalability ProgrammeIntroduction: I need more power…!! Computing power that is. This has been a major focus for numerical weather prediction in hopes of creating more accurate and detailed predictions of Earth’s systems. The highly touted European Model has long been one of the leaders in numerical weather prediction performance. As the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) prepares to integrate the next generation of supercomputers, model efficiency may suffer as more data is computed at higher resolutions. Current processing capabilities and codes are not adapted to meet these needs. Today’s guest, Dr. Peter Bauer, will outline how they are working with meteorological modellers, computer scientists and hardware providers to make sure the EURO is ready for this upgrade.
For the 15th Anniversary, Paul Maroon, Walter Martin and Peter Bauer look back on writing, recording and touring the classic Walkmen record, 'Bows & Arrows.' In this episode, members of The Walkmen reflect on recording in the south during a hurricane, opening for Incubus after 9/11, a tiger balm incident with Hamilton Leithauser, and the contentious process behind their biggest song, "The Rat."
Earlier this year I visited the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, a European organization that produces global weather forecasts and performs research on how to improve those. The episode has three parts. First, Hilda Carr gives us an overview of the organization, its purpose and its history. Then I talk with Peter Bauer about weather and climate modeling and about encoding these models efficiently in software programs that run on supercomputers. Part three is a conversation with Tony McNally about where the ECMWF gets its data and how it is continuously fed into the "running" model.

Conversation with Peter Bauer, founder of Amplid Snowboards, about what it is like to get too much snow. Peter lives south of Bavaria, close to the austrian border, « two weeks ago I did not think it possible to have too much snow ». He tells us more about the problems he experienced with this epic snowfall.
Numerical weather prediction (NWP) is like excellent coffee in the Bay Area: so common that it is now taken for granted, obscuring the decades of expertise, knowledge, and technique underlying the whole operation. In episode 77 of Forecast, Peter Bauer from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts tells Mike about the massive and decades-long […]

Back in 2003, tech wasn't exactly having its most glorious days. The bitter taste of the dot-com crash was still pungent. Few entrepreneurs would be blamed for not willing to take a punt by starting a new tech company. Peter Bauer, however, didn't succumb to that too much. He sensed SaaS would outlive that and become the next big thing. Peter placed a bet on a cloud-based email management system and Mimecast was born. From the early days, Mimecast defied rules and expectations. While everyone advised Peter to focus on just one aspect of email, he and his co-founder were religious about creating a supercategory. 15 years on the journey, Peter has had the rare chance to lead the company through all stages, including an IPO. He knows equally well the problems of having 5k in the bank and 35 people on the payroll as well as having 140 million in the bank and figuring what is next. Listen on to hear: How does the thinking behind the product change over time How do you know it's time to move to a new market How Mimecast kept the cultural cohesion as it scaled What is the best way to approach compensation Which is the toughest stage on the journey and how to prepare for it P.S. This conversation was part of a fantastic first stop of SaaStock on Tour in London. The next stop on SaaStock on Tour is Paris on May 3rd. Find out more information https://www.saastock.com/ontour
Kyle Poyar is a self-professed pricing and growth nerd. The latest guest on the SaaS Revolution Show, Kyle is Senior Director of Market Strategy at Openview, one of many speakers we will welcome in Dublin for SaaStock18. His passion lays in seeing how packaging and pricing have the power to build large and enduring business. Kyle helps OpenView's portfolio companies accelerate to top-line growth through deep insights into their market landscape and customers. Kyle recently published an article studying the price changes Netflix introduced https://labs.openviewpartners.com/netflix-pricing-strategy/#.Wnx15pOFjOQ. The point he was making there, as he does so on the podcast as well, is that few companies understand the true effect price increases have on a company's bottom line, a contributing factor to the reluctance of many SaaS founders to charge more. Kyle is also the author of a comprehensive pricing e-book - Mastering SaaS Pricing. http://offers.openviewpartners.com/mastering-saas-pricing Listen on to learn How to be more data-driven in your pricing decisions How to have better pricing conversations with customers What are the signs it's time for a price increase What are the impacts of increasing prices and why no one should be scared of that How do you implement and communicate a price increase P.S. Boston where Kyle comes from, like many other cities around the world, has become a hotspot for SaaS. In the next year, we will visit some of them, bringing SaaStock on Tour, starting with London on March 21st where we'll gather 300 SaaS founders, their executive teams, and local VCs. In an epic day of content, learning, and networking, we will host amazing speakers such as Peter Bauer, who to this date is the only UK headquartered SaaS to IPO with Mimecast, Peter Holten Muhlmann, CEO of one of Europe's greatest scaleups, Trustpilot, and Des Traynor Co-founder of Intercom.
