Video Version contains all the references and notes if needed:https://youtu.be/If6MlszavvMWe look at Catholic Popes and Councils and their utterly clear statements on the necessity of Catholic baptism, weekly mass attendance, and good standing in the bosom of the Catholic Church at the time of death. No ifs, ands or buts. No nuancing. Utterly clear! We then look at other Popes and the current catechism which completely contradict them. And the super serious Catholics who reject all popes since Pius XII have the additional problem of arguing that the College of Cardinals infallibly appointed by Pius XI and Pius XII somehow were not infallible when they chose John XXIII. Quite the poser! But at least they see the contradictions mentioned above. So, in a weird way, the super duper Catholics agree with me!A recent survey revealed that 77% of professing Catholics do not attend weekly mass (almost certainly fewer attend all the Holy Days of Obligation). Well, since we're pretty sure they don't all have great excuses every single week, according to codified RC doctrine, they're on their way to eternal fiery torment upon death. We look at those related RCC doctrines. We ask again, if you don't fear their warnings of eternal fiery torment, why do you believe their promises of heaven?Hey, I don't hates 'em, I just quotes 'em!
Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 11, is the Memorial Day of St. John XXIII, pope, for five years until his earthly death in 1963. He was called “the good Pope” and was known for convening the Second Vatican Council. Sustained by a profound spirit of prayer, John XXIII was seen as a reflection of God's goodness. Today is also the day of the Divine Maternity of Mary, or the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast instituted by Pius XI in 1931. The faithful emphasize Mary's divine maternity and her motherhood of all Christ's Mystical Body members. The Pope himself singled out Mary as the foremost model for the dignity and sanctity of chaste married life and the religious education of youth. TRANSCRIPT Welcome to Popeular History, a library of Catholic knowledge and insights. Check out the show notes for sources, further reading, and a transcript. Today we're discussing another current Cardinal of the Catholic Church, one of the 120 or so people who will choose the next Pope when the time comes. Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle was born on June 21, 1957 in Manila, the capital and second largest city of the Philippines, located on Luzon, the large island that makes up most of the north of the country. When you're born in a city comparable to New York, there's no need to go far to get your education. Of course, some do, but Luis kept things local through ordination, while still maintaining the norm of getting your philosophy and theology pieces of seminary training at separate institutions. By 25, Father Tagle was a priest for the Archdiocese of Manila, serving as a pastor in a parish south of Manila proper and as a spiritual director at a nearby seminary. By the venerable age of 26, he was serving as rector of the seminary- the San Carlos Diocesan Seminary of Imus. Father Tagle, who prefers to go by his nickname Chito, did go further afield in 1985, studying in Rome and the Catholic University of America, where he got a doctorate in theology in 1991. Having a doctorate didn't make him too big for his britches, he resumed pastoral work, carrying on into the new millennium doing that and various special roles within the Diocese–and some work on the global scale as well, serving on the International Theological Commission from 1997 to 2002. In 2002, he was elected Bishop of Imus, that “south of Manila proper” area where his first pastoral assignment had taken place. His principal consecrator was Cardinal Sin, who, thankfully, spoke English and knew darn well he had a funny name for a Cardinal, taking to calling his lodgings “the house of Sin”. But enough about that, I need to stay focused on Tagle's rising star, because obviously, he's not done yet. In 2011, Chito was made Archbishop of Manila. It's hard to think of a posting more likely to get you a red hat in the globalized Church than Manila. And it may be kind of weird to hear me talk about the globalized church given catholic has always meant universal and the Catholic Church has always been a big broad thing, but the reality is that for a good long while thanks to colonialism and other factors the college of Cardinals was primarily a European affair, with conclaves as recently as the 1922 election of Pius XI having only European participants. But the focus of the Church has shifted, the lens has widened, and it's hard to ignore the fact that over 92 million Catholics live in the Philippines. Actually, I suppose it's not *that* hard to ignore that fact, since it used to be something pretty well ignored, but since 1960 Manila has always had a Cardinal, or at least if the Cardinal of Manila had just died, their successor would get a red hat in the next consistory. So naturally, as Archbishop of Manila, Chito was made a Cardinal when Pope Benedict created new Cardinals in February 2012, right? Well, yes, but actually no, because his predecessor–not the wonderfully named Cardinal Sin but the guy between them, Cardinal Rosales--was still a Cardinal under the age of 80 and therefore even though he had retired from active service as the bishop he was still eligible to participate in any future conclaves, and it wouldn't do to have two Cardinals representing Manila in one conclave. Of course that's all conjecture but I'm far from the first to propose that logic and the pattern of being reluctant to make someone a Cardinal as long as their predecessor is still around as a voting Cardinal does seem to check out when you look at the data. In any event, Cardinal Rosales turned 80 later in 2012 and Archbishop Tagle was on Pope Benedict's surprise supplemental November consistory towards the end of that year. I won't go too far down the rabbit hole of interpreting that supplemental consistory as an early warning sign of Pope Benedicts' shocking [retirement] announcement a few months later, but, well, that *is* a thing that happened, and so, like Baselios Cardinal Cleemis we talked about right before I went on hiatus, Chito found himself participating in the 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis. Now, I know we're going to have lots more opportunities to talk about papal conclaves as we go. So ideally I'd ease you into this conversation. But the reality is Cardinal Tagle is currently the odds-on favorite to become Pope after the next conclave, and while that's far from a guarantee–conclaves are famously unpredictable--its not something I'd feel right, you know, not mentioning. So with that out of the way, keep that in mind as we go. By the way, feel free to follow @pope_predictor on the platform formerly known as Twitter, or wherever else you and/or they might be using by the time you listen to this. Their papability index isn't the only thing out there projecting Tagle as the favorite, but they're one of the more engaging and they said I could call them a friend of the show so there you have it. Anyways, Cardinal Tagle is fluent in speaking his native Tagalog language, as well as English and Italian. He can also read Spanish, French, Korean and Latin. Staying in 2013, he was made a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family and of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerants, as well as the Congregation for Education. But why stop there? In 2014, he was named member of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and also the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. In 2015, the good folks at Caritas must have seen him looking bored, because they went and made him their president, and he was also added to the Pontifical Council Cor Unum. I'm not going to spell out every post he's held but I did want to give you an idea. By 2020 his curial responsibilities had reached the point where he resigned the Archbishopric of Manila and became a full time curial Cardinal. The pivotal appointment there was his appointment as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. 2020 was also the year where he reached a height not yet obtained by any other cardinal we've discussed so far: he was elevated to the status of Cardinal-Bishop, which yes, historically had something to do with one being both a Cardinal and a Bishop, but nowadays Cardinal Priests and even Cardinal Deacons are typically bishops too so the distinction is a bit more nuanced. In the end, it's the highest tier within the college of Cardinals. There are currently a dozen Cardinal Bishops, which, it should be noted, is more than there used to be. I'm well past word count at this point. I'll simply note that in terms of his current titles, Chito is a member of seven Dicasteries–nearly half of them, there are sixteen by my count—and two of the Vatican's financial oversight groups with unwieldy names. And, of course, more besides. Luis Antonio Gokim Cardinal Tagle is eligible to participate in future conclaves until he turns 80 in 2037. Today's episode is part of Cardinal Numbers, and there will be more Cardinal Numbers next week. Thank you for listening; God bless you all! Thanks, Joe!
Thomas Mirus and Nathan Douglas continue their discussion of Pope Pius XII's apostolic exhortations brought together in the 1955 document “The Ideal Film”, which remains the high water-mark of official Church engagement with the art form. They also touch on his 1957 encyclical Miranda prorsus, on radio, films, and television. In the first audience, Pius XII had discussed the ideal film in its relation to the spectator. In this second audience, he discusses the ideal film both in relation to its content, and in relation to society. He makes general observations on the legitimate range of subjects which a film may take on as matter for its plot, and offers principles for films which deal with religious subjects and for the portrayal of evil. Pius XII puts his finger on one of the biggest problems with many Christian movies: “Religious interpretation, even when it is carried out with a right intention, rarely receives the stamp of an experience truly lived and as a result, capable of being shared with the spectator.” Two years after The Ideal Film, the encyclical Miranda prorsus (on radio, films, and television) reiterated much of the moral teaching of Pius XI's Vigilanti cura, but with more detail for particular occupations within the film world—directors, producers, actors, theater owners, etc. Of particular interest is the teaching about the moral obligations of Catholic film critics. When Pope Pius XII died in 1958, his papers were sealed in the Vatican Secret Archives, leaving unanswered questions about what he knew and did during World War II. In 2020, the archives were finally opened. Based on thousands of never-before-seen documents, Brown University Professor Emeritus David Kertzer's book “The Pope at War” paints a dramatic portrait of what the Pope did and did not do as war enveloped Rome and the continent, and as the Nazis began their systematic mass murder of Europe's Jews. Friends of the Rosary: Today, as every year on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the Catholic Church observes the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe — also known as the feast of Christ the King. This celebration, on the last Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent, was instituted a century ago by Pope Pius XI. In his 1925 encyclical Quas Primas, Pius XI rightly wrote that "men must look for the peace of Christ in the kingdom of Christ." "As long as individuals and states refused to submit to the rule of our Savior, there would be no really hopeful prospect of a lasting peace among nations." Three years earlier, the Soviet Union was created in Russia, an explicitly secular state that would aggressively persecute believers in the coming decades. Later in the century, we would see the mass murder incited by communist and national socialist regimes, the World War II catastrophe, the destruction caused by ideologies, the genocides, abortion, and multiple other disgraces over the human race, all as consequences of a life established without faith in the living God. In this solemnity, we revere Christ as King. And we rejoice in acknowledging that Christ has necessarily supreme and absolute dominion over all things created. "His is the kingdom of love — the kingdom of those who give their lives for the salvation of others," said Pope Francis. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Across history, starting in the fourth and fifth centuries, heretics — and heresy comes from darkness — have refused to honor Mary as Mother of God. The Council of Ephesus in 431 declared that the Blessed Virgin is the Mother of God. Five centuries later, Pius XI instituted today's feast to emphasize not only Mary's divine maternity but also her motherhood of all the members of Christ's Mystical Body. Pius XI believed that this mystery should become firmly anchored forever in the hearts of the faithful. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! Our Lady of The Divine Maternity, Pray for Us! + Mikel A. | RosaryNetwork.com, New York • October 11, 2021, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET

Sean interviews Fr. Thomas and Dr. Fimister, the authors of "Integralism", which attempts to offer a thoroughly scholastic/Thomistic perspective on political philosophy, especially inspired by the social encyclicals of Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI. They discuss the kingship, priesthood, and patriarchy of our first father Adam and how this changed after the Fall; the religious orientation of the natural law; taxation; the social contract and the State; distinctions on employment, servitude, and slavery; usury; centralization, scale, and distributism; and unjust governments. After being diagnosed with permanent impotence, a husband begins to suspect his wife is having an affair. This is the ninth installment of Kieslowski's Dekalog, a Polish film series inspired by the Ten Commandments. The writers of this series yet again return to the theme of weak husbands and fathers failing to claim their rights and therefore to fulfil their duties - in this case, a husband who does not protect the exclusive fidelity of the marriage bond. But central to the episode is the question of whether love and sex can be separated in marriage - as well as sex and procreation. It suggests that when a married couple chooses not to have children, the door is opened to other kinds of selfishness as well. The scene mimics the traditional Nativity scene. But instead of the Holy Family, it features the Statue of Liberty as the Blessed Mother, and the founding fathers surrounding the Bill of Rights in a manger. The pope has named a new prefect of the Vatican's Congregation for the Clergy. The 69-year-old bishop is the first Korean to lead a Vatican congregation. He succeeds an Italian Cardinal, who led the dicastery beginning in 2013. The dicastery oversees the world's diocesan priests and deacons. The Vatican issued a decree today, setting limits on the terms of leaders of international associations of the faithful, and new communities. The new decree limits the terms of office in the central governing body to a maximum of five years, with one person being able to hold positions at the international governing level for no more than 10 years consecutively. Pope Francis Thursday urged a group of Italian seminarians to avoid rigidity, which he said lacks humanity, and encouraged them to ask God for the gift of docility. The pope spoke about the qualities of a good seminarian and priest, in a meeting with the students, rector, and formators of the Pius XI regional pontifical seminary, located in central Italy. Today is the feast of Saint Barnabas. The apostle and missionary was among Christ's earliest followers, and was responsible for welcoming St. Paul into the Church.

As I began recording this episode I realized there were two episodes running around in my head and I was trying to cram it all into one. I am looking at Christ the King Sunday from two angles today. This one is why it is important for Christians to re-up their covenant commitment to the Lord as King and what that means. When the feast day was installed in the liturgical calendar by the Roman Catholic church in 1925 it was because Pope Pius XI saw something in the culture that greatly alarmed him and others like Gresham Machen saw it too (if you don't know Machen, follow that link to a short primer on the man, it's worth it). They saw it also in the church, and instituting an annual remembrance of Christ as the King was begun. Here is what Pius XI said he hoped to gain from this and I believe even we Protestants can agree with the importance of these particular aim. . "If to Christ our Lord is given all power in heaven and on earth; if all men, purchased by his precious blood, are by a new right subjected to his dominion; if this power embraces all men, it must be clear that not one of our faculties is exempt from his empire. He must reign in our minds, which should assent with perfect submission and firm belief to revealed truths and to the doctrines of Christ. He must reign in our wills, which should obey the laws and precepts of God. He must reign in our hearts, which should spurn natural desires and love God above all things, and cleave to him alone. He must reign in our bodies and in our members, which should serve as instruments for the interior sanctification of our souls, or to use the words of the Apostle Paul, as instruments of justice unto God."

Episode 49:Im a Catholic who's co-equally a Catholic and an American patriot. Many people among Catholic social warriors and other fruitcakes, idiots and malcontents say that I cant be both. They say the two positions are mutually exclusive; they're contradictions. Here in the Ozark Mountains we call people like them booger-eating morons. Tune in to find out what I mean! CorrectionFor some odd reason (and most things about me are odd), I made reference to Pius XI being pope when this country's constitution was written. That'd be kind of difficult, because Pius XI wasn't pope until about 150 years later. I meant to say Pius VI. Sorry if I confused you. The complete recording is available for purchase at Audible.com: https://tinyurl.com/yahmfwfz A History of the Popes by Joseph McCabe. Narrated by Denis Daly. Joseph McCabe's study of papal history is unusual in that he takes a hostile view of the Roman Catholic Church in general, and of the papacy in particular. Raised as a Catholic, McCabe was ordained as a Franciscan priest in 1890, but by 1897 had abandoned both the priesthood and the Catholic faith and was in the process of establishing himself as an ardent secularist. He published over 200 books, many of which were critiques of the history and contemporary activities of the Catholic Church. A History of the Popes is divided into four books: "The Age of Development (AD. 50-450)", "The Dark Age (AD. 450-1050)", "The Age of Power (AD. 1050-1550)", "The Age of Disintegration (AD. 1550-1939)". The history concludes during the reign of Pius XI, who today is hailed as a hero by conservative Catholics for his staunch opposition to modernism, but who has also been the target of strong criticism elsewhere for his accommodating stance toward Mussolini and Hitler. This book is the fascinating story of a unique autocracy which has survived the fall of many empires and which today still claims the allegiance of over one billion followers.

Orwell and Hemingway in Spain - the long awaited episode on the Spanish Civil War is finally here! Herein the panel covers Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell and For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, complete with some mustache styling tips and a brief lesson in Spanish swear words. Though centered on the same conflict (albeit in separate regions of the country) the two works differ wildly in style, tone and detail. Hemingway's novel is essentially fiction, making use of the conflict for his setting and backdrop while Orwell reports on the war, laboring to understand and explain the roots of the struggle within the quagmire of surrounding politics. Sam's brief primer on the Spanish Civil War promises to make the subject more accessible than ever before – and hopefully encourage more personal research into an event that seems to reside unjustly in the shadow of World War II. Original Air Date: October 19, 2016 In this episode of Francis Watch, we are pleased to welcome back Father Anthony Cekada before his surgery. He joins Bishop Donald Sanborn in commenting on the latest outrages of Jorge Bergoglio against the Roman Catholic Religion. Topics for discussion in this episode include: -Confirmation via explicit written letter by Francis of the “spirit of the law” regarding Amoris Laetitia in regards to a pastoral letter issued by the diocese in Buenos Aires. -Francis cautions people against “pretending” to do good works. Takes one to know one, perhaps? -Georgian Catholics are warned against the great sin against ecumenism: trying to convert the Orthodox! -Transgenders are a case-by-case issue. -Art imitates life in a new television series about a disrespectful and probably atheist “pope.” -Assisi installment six rolls on. -A brief look at the new “cardinals” that have been appointed. -The laughable and embarrassing response of CFN and the Remnant, an upgrade on their “resist you to the face” routine to a mockery of a Pius XI encyclical title. -What happens when annulments go on sale. Podcast (21m07s): Play in new window | Download Sacred MusicPart I: Chant and Instruments Singing the Mass vs. Singing at MassSacred music by its very nature is music that is set apart for the sacred liturgy. It is different from secular (worldly) music. We speak of sacred and profane music. The word profane does not mean wicked, sinful, or evil; rather, it means, literally "outside the temple" (from the Latin fanum, temple). Music that is admitted into the Mass is considered sacred music, in one way or another. When most Latin Catholics go to Mass, they hear lots of hymns: an opening hymn, an offertory hymn, a communion hymn, a recessional hymn. Hymns are poetic texts sung to simple melodies by the whole congregation. Although 20th century magisterial texts encouraged hymns (for instance, Pius XII in Musicae Sacrae) for their ability to inspire devotion among the faithful, hymns are not actually part of the Mass. But there is music that is part of the Mass. In fact, the Mass itself is a song. The most basic sung portion of the Mass are the calls and responses between the priest and the people: "Dominus vobiscum", the Lord be with you; "Et cum spiritu tuo", and with your spirit, and so forth. But other music belongs to the Mass as well. Chants such as the Gloria or the Gradual are examples of music sung by the choir and sometimes the people that are part of the Mass. In its 1958 Instruction on Sacred Music, the Congregation for Rites made a list of Sacred music, that is music admissible to the Mass: Gregorian ChantSacred Polyphony"Modern" Sacred Music (such as Mozart)Sacred instrumental music (mostly organ solos)HymnsIt also speaks of Religious Music, which is music that by its nature isn't appropriate for Mass, but is useful in other circumstances to raise the mind and heart to God. Among these categories, the first three include music for the texts of the Mass, and among those three, Gregory Chant holds a special place. Sacrosanctum Concilium (116), the constitution of Vatican II on the Sacred Liturgy, summarizes this nicely: The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as proper to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it is to be given the first place in liturgical services. The word proper means its own. Gregorian Chant is not separate from the Roman Mass: the two grew up together. It is the Mass's own music. It's not a mere decoration of the Mass: it's part of the Mass. And so, all things being equal, it must be given the first place. But in the Middle Ages, the chant was decorated and sometimes replaced by music with multiple voices and music accompanied by instruments. In the High Middle Ages, vocal music reached such perfection in polyphony, that the Church made polyphony her own for the Roman Mass, particularly in the music of Palestrina. Later on, the music was enriched with orchestral music and other types of music. The Church permitted some of this, but never fully embraced it. Popes attempted to eliminate the operatic and the worldly or profane from this music. Still, it was never entirely forbidden.Instruments at MassThe apostolic Christians did not use instruments. Some of the Church Fathers spoke especially negatively about them. Even at the time of Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor considers them to be banned in the Sacred Liturgy. This ban continues to this day in some Eastern Churches, but in the West, they were gradually allowed, but only insofar as the could sustain, imitate, augment, and decorate the human voice. The organ became the first and only instrument fully embraced by the Church when it had suitably developed so that it had a similar subtlety to the human voice. There are some historical reasons for this, but the principle reasons why the voice is the liturgical instrument par excellence are theological, namely that the Word become flesh and sent the Holy Spirit who makes nimble the tongue.Christian worship is logos-centric. It is centered on the word, in honor of the Word of God. The Holy Spirit who spoke through the prophets also loosens the tongues of Christians to proclaim the glories of God, giving to the human voice the power to express even what is beyond words. Thus worship with words is the most spiritual worship. It is our logike latria our word-centered/rational/logical/spiritual worship. In admitting instruments to the Mass, the Church has never forgotten the word-centeredness of her worship. In fact, Pius XI writes in Divini Cultus:Voices should be preferred to instruments for no instrument, however perfect, however excellent, can surpass the human voice in expressing human thought, especially when it is used by the mind to offer up prayer and praise to Almighty God.and Benedict IX in Annus Qui in 1749 permitted certain stringed and wind instruments "only for adding some support to the singing, so that the meaning of the prayers is more clearly brought to the minds of the listeners and the souls of the faithful are moved to a contemplation of spiritual things, and are aroused to a love of God and of things divine."We can never leave behind Gregorian Chant! Its very rhythms and spirit define Sacred Music for the Roman Mass. We can never leave behind the human voice. And when we introduce new music into the Liturgy, it must be truly sacred.
