Welcome back to another Iron Sights After Dark Episode! SHOT Show is the largest annual event held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. Since the 2021 event was canceled due to COVID-19 regulations, this year's event was expected to be one of the largest yet. In this episode, I sat down with JP to discuss his experience at the 2022 event: the highlights, surprises, no-shows, controversy and all the innovative products and new upcoming brands in the firearm community. Since founding Train with Purpose and entering the product business through selling custom high quality base plates, JP discusses the event from the perspective of both a business owner and fan. I was bummed to not be able to make it this year so it was great to hear a thorough recap of the event. Other topics discussed included: The new regulations for gun owners in San Jose California, the value in networking with people face-to-face regardless of owning an internet business and the reason why countless brands in the industry think that refusing to wear a mask is the patriotic thing to do. I hope you enjoy this conversation, recap and friendly debate with my good friend JP!Timestamps:00:00 Opening The Show01:21 Traveling To Shot Show04:00 The Brands Against Shot Show05:15 Who Can Go To Shot Show11:41 The Mask Mandates in Vegas and The 2A Communities Response25:05 The Reason People Go To SHOT Show28:09 The Value of Going To Events and In-Person Shows30:37 The New Gun Laws In San Jose33:23 The Highlights, Innovation & New Products from SHOT Show 202249:07 FUDs At SHOT Show50:53 Upcoming Brands To Look Out For55:19 Transparency with Firearms Brands & Products1:09:48 The Most Reliable Gun Set-Up For Beginners & Why Companies Sell You Garbage1:16:07 The Infancy of The Firearms Community1:20:52 The Consumer's Impact on The Industry

From our perch atop the Sands Expo, we have a great view of the show floor for the show, but we don't get the fidelity of exploring the exhibits. Even being on the floor doesn't give a full, detailed view of everything on display. It is always a pleasure to get a report on how other professionals see the show. This year, we are joined by Jim Harris, a social media influencer who is always at the top of the CES charts. As you can tell, Jim takes detailed notes about his experiences, including during our conversation. This detail is how he is able to retain information about the vast number of booths and exhibits he sees. Among his favorite finds on the show floor are some of our guests, including MicroEJ, a platform for embedded devices that allows for on-device apps without the large footprint of Android.During Media Days, which happen just before CES opens officially, he was intrigued by a concept from Intel which allows a near real-time 3D scanning of an active sports arena. This scanning creates the concept of virtual cameras, allowing a viewer to experience and collection of moments of a game from any angle. Imagine watching a football game and wanting to experience a play from the perspective of the leading edge of the football. This technology gives you that ability without having to change the aerodynamics of the ball by adding a camera. You could also watch the play from any other angle on or off the field - all virtually.Another impressive technology he encountered was from Bosch, a company known for unique solutions at CES. They have taken the concept of adjustable glass opacity and applied to it car windshields. Using cameras and eye-tracking, the system is able to determine where the sun is in relation to your height and eye-line, and block out a small section of the windshield to improve your vision. It is a much better solution to the problem of sunlight while driving than a fixed sun visor. To learn more about Jim Harris's experiences, his books, or his career, check out his website.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology and Christopher Jordan of The Talking Sound.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. Sometimes during CES we get an opportunity to speak with a member of our own team or a colleague at the show. That is what happened when Mat Luschek visited our studio at the end of Todd's Day 1 block. Mat has worked with the Tech Podcasts Team in the past, particularly on Todd's floor team, to cover CES. This year, he was exploring the show as a freelancer who lives in Las Vegas. He and Todd talked about what has quickly become some of the most anticipated parts of the show floor - Eureka Park. This piece of the show is directly below our studio on the first floor of The Sands Expo. This section features new companies and startups, often in the very early stages of their corporate journey. In the time that TPN has covered the show, we have seen this part of the show grow from a couple of dozen booths to most of the first floor of the expo hall.Todd describes Eureka Park by saying, "The guy that's in the booth, that's maxed out his credit card and is showing whatever he can show to try and get some traction. Try and get a business deal going." And that is exactly what it is like - one of two people with a dream and mounting debt hoping that CES will be the show that turns their dreams into reality. The pair then talk about the things you don't usually get to see - our technological mistakes. For example, Todd brought the wrong tripod for his camera, having left the other one at home because why would he possibly need that? We've all done it, and it often leads to things that are a little less than ideal, like the product shot we used early in the week.Interview by Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy. It started as an outline seven years ago, to a full-fledged 300+ paged novel that has, (https://amzn.to/2V34oAx) I believe, a unique feature. Short chapters. No doubt the book will read easy and teach many. Mitch Schneider is a fourth-generation “mechanic/technician” recognized as a champion of service dealer and technician causes. Mitch is an award-winning journalist, former shop owner, and published novelist. For more than 37 years, Mitch operated Schneider’s Automotive — a successful 6-bay, family-owned and operated service facility in Simi Valley, Calif. Mitch has recent great news on the biggest challenge in his life as he has taken on  Primary Myelofibrosis, a rare bone cancer, head-on. Mike Davidson is from Parkway Automotive in Little Rock, Arkansas, been in the industry for more than 30 years  and a business owner for over 18. Mike is an AMI graduate, an ASE Master Technician, he belongs and contributes to Elite Worldwide and was recognized as the Arkansas NAPA/ASE tech of the year seven years in a row.  He’s been doing radio and TV over the last fifteen years talking ‘service’ in Little Rock. Mike helped start the Little Rock chapter of ASA and is currently an officer. Look for Mike’s other episode (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=mike+davidson) .   Key Talking Points: There are many interpretations of wage and hour and rules As Mike sat through a department of labor (DOL) seminar on wage and hour he realized that he would take his newfound knowledge and further research and write a book specific to the service side of the aftermarket The definition of compensatory duties is key. “Anytime spent benefiting the employer” Look back is three years Time tracking is one of the most important elements of getting through a DOL audit   Mike show in the book that a 50¢ mistake can cost $60,000 in fines In the wage and hour law section 206 (establish minimum wage) and 207 (establish overtime ‘premium pay’ rules) and 213 (establishes exemptions)   In section 213B section 10 explains the auto dealer not the aftermarket. However, we believe it lends itself to our industry. Many shop owners get caught here. It specifically says it does not apply to commercial garages. A legal advisor in wage and hour is needed to keep you compliant. Interpretation of hourly and exempt classification To keep compliant Mike created a regular rate calculator (spreadsheet) to maintain compliance to the law. It calculates the regular and overtime rate Audits. The DOL believes everyone is hourly unless an exemption applies. Exemptions is where the gray areas are. Attorney’s are not allowed to be in interviews with your employees Job Description will guide the interview State laws will protect employee greater than federal Mike’s book pertains to Federal law Be very careful on Administrative exemptions  His biggest discovery in researching the book is timekeeping and signed by the employee Mike uses Time Clock Plus to track time Mike helps you understand how a training rate figures into compensation   Link to get Mike’s Book Wage and Hour Compliance: (https://www.industryessentials.net/) Resources: Thanks to Mike Davidson for his contribution to the aftermarket’s premier podcast. In 2018 we had over 20 cases before OSHA, and we did not lose one. We are passionate about employers rights and it shows.  We provide employers with all the tools they need to get and stay in compliance with both OSHA and Labor Laws.   All about employers protecting their rights.
