This week's episode guest is Tova Olsson who has been teaching yoga and meditation for nearly 20 years. She holds a MA in religious studies from the University of Gothenburg and is specialised in yogic and tantric traditions. She teaches the philosophy section of several yoga teacher trainings and is appreciated for her skills in storytelling and her ability to explain philosophical ideas in an approachable, embodied and humorous ways. She is currently working on her PhD at Umeå University in Sweden, researching the construction of gender in contemporary, European tantra. In this episode we speak about the Dasa Mahavidyas, the ten tantric wisdom goddesses, which Tova has an online course about. Dasa Maha Vidya means "Ten Great Wisdoms", depicted in classical tantric tradition as a group of, to say the least, macabre goddesses. Some of them, such as Kali and Tara, are quite well known, others, like Bagalamukhi and Matangi, are more obscure. But they all represent both stages of cosmic evolution and human spiritual development. Therefore, they can be called wisdom plateaus, cosmic forces as well as the faces of kundalini. For those interested in understanding nondual tantric philosophy, cosmology and the more esoteric aspects of the Shakta (goddess) tradition, her course offers an opportunity you don't want to miss!  For my podcast listeners, you can get 50% off the Dasa Mahavidyas course with the discount code: "Jaima" Check it out here: https://saraswati-studies.teachable.com/p/dasa-mahavidyas-the-ten-tantric-wisdom-goddesses Check out Tova's other courses here: https://saraswati-studies.teachable.com/ Tova's Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/saraswati_studies/  My Law of Positivism Healing Oracle card deck: https://www.lawofpositivism.com/healingoracle.html Visit Law of Positivism: https://www.instagram.com/lawofpositivism/ Website: https://www.lawofpositivism.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lawofpositivism/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/lawofpositivism

The Authentic Roots and Fruits of the Kālacakra Tantra: Niraj Kumar (Dakini Conversations, Ep.7)

Here is the seventh episode of the Dakini Conversations podcast, an in-depth discussion with the leading Indian Kālacakra scholar and translator, Niraj Kumar, who was also recently promoted to Joint Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Culture (after being the Director for a couple of years).   Niraj is a commentator on Shakta and Buddhist Tantras, and has been active with various facets of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism for more than a decade. His ongoing work is five volume pentalogy on Kalacakra Tantra, the first comprehensive English translation and new commentary of the Sanskrit text, for several centuries after it was said to have been first written down in the 11th century. The Kālacakra Tantra is said to be the climax of the Indian Buddhist Nalanda tradition and the last major Buddhist tantra composed in India.  Niraj Kumar's first volume on Kālacakra was published in 2022, and the second volume is expected to be released within next couple of months. Niraj is also a pan-Asian thinker and writer on geopolitics in Asia and was instrumental in organizing the First Asia Peace Forum in New Delhi (2015). He is also one of the key architects of ongoing exposition of the sacred relics of Shakyamuni Buddha in Thailand this year. I first became aware of Niraj Kumar when he personally asked me to present his Kālacakra work at the Vajrayana conference in Bhutan in 2022, which he was unable to attend. Several people also suggested that I interview him about his work on Kalacakra. I then had the good fortune to meet Niraj in India last year for an Indian academic conference at which I was invited to be a keynote speaker. At that time, we exchanged our Kālacakra publications and on finally reading his work, I was amazed and fascinated by the research, ideas and revelations in the Introduction to his book. It was surprising that more people did not know about them and so part of the reason for this interview is to bring some of those ideas out to a larger more general audience. See also: https://dakinitranslations.com/kalacakra-2/ During our podcast discussion, we speak about Kumar's Introduction to the first volume, which is full of fascinating research and revelations, including some of the key concepts in the Tantra regarding time (kāla), the three realms (outer, inner and other), the types of breath/energy, and death itself. This is then followed by a discussion of the dating of the composition of the root Kālacakra text itself (1027 CE), the oldest extant texts available of it (one on palm-leaf currently housed at the British Library), and remarkably indeed the proposed authorship of the written root text being the great Indian Mahasiddha, Naropa, who received the transmission of it from his guru Tilopa, who is said to have been taught it in the Kingdom of Shambhala itself.  The latter part of the discussion relates to how the main lineages of Kālacakra came into Tibet, finishing with an analysis of contemporary practice and application of Kālacakra and how it has degenerated away from the words and advice of the root Tantra text with 20th Century mass empowerments to thousands of 'unqualified' people, for predominantly political, social and financial purposes in cohorts with the Chinese communist government. Kumar also states in his book that the empowerments given by the 14th Dalai Lama are also not 'correct' because they were not all given on the full moon, as advised by the root Tantra. Knut A. Hinduism is a global religion with a significant presence in many countries throughout the world. The most important cause of this global expansion is migration. This book presents and analyses the most important of the geographies, migration histories, religious traditions and developments, rituals, places, institutions, and representations of Hinduism in the diasporas, capturing some of the great plurality of Hindu religious traditions.  The first part of the book concentrates on the major regions in the world in which Hindu diasporas are found. The main focus is the modern period, but the book discusses also the possibility of premodern Hindu diasporas in Southeast Asia. The second part focuses on specific central themes such as Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Shakta traditions in diasporas, temples, and traditions of sacred sites and pilgrimage outside of South Asia, Hindutva organizations and the diaspora, as well as relations between Hindu diasporas and new followers of Hindu traditions. The chapters in this book show some of the global presence of the Hindu diasporas and some of the dynamic developments in multiple geographical spaces. Analysing specific spaces and themes, the chapters of the book offer a foundation for understanding the Hindu traditions in its most important global diasporic contexts and the dynamic developments around the world. She is benevolent and nurturing, yet fierce and terrible, a warrior and a lover. She creates and gives life, is death personified, and the one who grants eternal salvation. She is the ultimate form of reality, the cosmos. As the Saundaryalahiri says, "Only when Shiva joins with you, O Shakti, can he exert his powers as lord, on his own he has not even the power to stir. You are worshipped by Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, and other gods. How dare I, meritless mortal, offer you reverence and praise?" The Goddess inspires deep devotion and it is not surprising to see Her being worshipped and revered across homes in India. Nilima Chitgopekar's Shakti (DK Publishing, 2022) will delve into this rich tradition of the Divine Feminine as She is represented across India and the subcontinent. Shakti will be a one-of-a-kind linear exploration of Goddess worship, neither a basic guide nor a dense academic treatise. Instead, it will invite the reader to learn about the Shakta culture, while telling the story of its birth and evolution, the many manifestations of the Goddess and their worship, and the myths, legends, and rituals that make up the tradition. This title will position itself as the first point of entry for anyone interested in the world of the Devi and Her culture. Raj Balkaran is a scholar of Sanskrit narrative texts. About the Guest Bihani Sakar is a Calcutta-born, Oxford-educated, scholar of classical Sanskrit literature and pre-modern Indian history and religious traditions. Bihani is a historian of early Indian politics, religions, and literature (poetry and drama) between the 2nd and the 15th centuries CE. She is lecturer in Comparative Non-Western Thought at Lancaster University and formerly a departmental lecturer in Sanskrit at Oriental Institute, University of Oxford. Bihani has researched and taught in universities in the UK and in Europe. Her teaching goal is to enable everyone access to early Indian Sanskrit texts and traditions in the original language, regardless of ability or prior knowledge, and to think about them in critical, modern, and exciting ways. Bihani's publications span the history of the Śākta (goddess-centric) traditions, their metaphysics, their relationship to power, their role in the growth of the state and kingship and, most recently, on Śākta epigraphy as well as on histories of classical Indian literary genres, aesthetics, and emotions. Her most recent book is Classical Sanskrit Tragedy: The Concept of Suffering and Pathos in Medieval India.   In this episode, we discuss:  Marginalized voices in the study of Sanskrit. Wild women and goddesses in ancient Sanskrit poetry in mythology. Shaktism as a stand-alone tradition. Shakta as a homegrown feminist tradition inspiring and emancipating Indian women. Does one need to be from a culture to understand a culture? The importance of valuing the place where something comes from. Being an accidental academic.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We start our evening's Q&A with some book recommendations for the study and practice of Tantrik Shaktism, that is, devotion to the Divine Mother. (00:00-07:00)Then we discuss some precautions around the Devī Māhātmyam sādhanā with regards to "fierce grace" with an excursus on the Power of Mantra/the Power of the Written Word. (07:00-16:00)But to soften that, we then talk about Mā's non-dual nature as ultimately compassionate, even towards supposed "demons"! At 19:00 we discuss the importance of Guru and Lineage in Tantrik practice. At 20:36 we talk about a "doxographic hierarchy": Samkhya then Advaita Vedanta then Non-Dual Shaiva Tantra which might roughly correspond to Sri Ramakrishna's "ajnana (ignorance)" to "jnana"(knowledge) to "vijnana". In the course of this discussion (20:36- 37:00) we talk about some of the risks and dangers that can come from improper sequencing of philosophy and practice (i.e narcissism, hedonism, complacency etc.) and how we might guard against that. At 28:00 minutes we discuss the attitude of Mathura Bhava, "god as my Lover" in the context of Shaivism and then at 30:00 I argue against that in favor of the parivatsalya bhava, the attitude of "god is my Mother" with an emphasis on strong, demand, self-assured devotion as opposed to a self-effacing devotion. This discussion is particularly valuable since devotion is at the heart of this community's approach to spiritual life.At 37:00, we reflect on the seeming paradox of how the Mother of the Universe (signifying mind-blowing transcendence and abstraction) can be my very own mother (in a very real, immediate and immanent sense). How to reconcile God's grandeur against Gods immediacy? We talk about Yashoda, Krishna's Mother, Swami Vivekananda and Anuradha Paudwal, the famous sangeet singer to explore various modes of devotion towards the Divine, as possible answers to the aforementioned question, so central to the devotee's life. At 44:20, we talk about the playful, "little girl" aspect of the Divine Mother before reviewing all the different modes of devotion (handmaid, parent, servant, child, awe/fear etc.) before closing out what I feel was one of our most inspired discussions yet. Thank you for the stimulating conversation Ishānt-ji and thank you Jess Devī for the excellent question!Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and Friday at 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lectures. It is free and open to the public.
Joogille koko kosmos on ikäänkuin suuri liekki jossa me kaikki olemme pieniä osasia tätä isompaa roihua. Muinaisissa viisausperinteissä asia on nähny hyvin eri tavalla. Mitä hyötyä on elää ajattomista periaatteista käsin? In the Shakta tradition, a goddess is referred to as the Devi, with Parvati as the equal partner of Shiva. There are many depictions of Shiva in both benevolent and ferocious aspects. In his noble aspects, he is depicted as a wise and ascetic living on Mount Kailash with his wife, Parvati, and their two children.Shiva is a deity worshipped in various Hindu countries and traditions like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The Shakti Peethas (holy places of cosmic power) are places of worship consecrated to the goddess 'Shakti', the female principal of Hinduism and the main deity of the Shakta sect. HISTORY Sati married Shiva against Daksha's will but still craved for her father's acceptance of their marriage. Around this, Daksha organised a massive yagna to please the Gods. He purposely did not invite Shiva and Sati. But Sati insisted on going to the yagna against Shiva's consent. She believed that no formal invitation was needed for her to go to her father's house. When Sati arrived at her father's palace, she was treated as an uninvited guest. Moreover, Daksha even committed the sin of insulting Lord Shiva in Sati's presence. Pained by her father's ignorance and arrogance, Sati threw herself in the fire set up for the yagna. At this time, Adi Shakti left her mortal body. When the news reached Shiva, he went wild with rage. He picked up Sati's body on his shoulders and started performing tandava, the dance of destruction. The stability of the Universe was threatened by Shiva's dance, and to protect the human world, Lord Vishnu cut up Sati's body with his sudarshan chakra. Shiva's anger was eventually cooled but Sati's body was never whole again. The body was cut up into 51 pieces and all the pieces fell at different places in India. These places of holy land are called the Shakti peethas. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/venus-jain3/message

Durga chandrakala stuti is a hymn composed by Appayya deekshita the great shaiva and scholar of Vedas Puranas and mantra shastras who lived in Tamil nadu in the fifteenth century (1520–1593 CE) In this hymn various glories of the mother goddess durgā from Vedas and various puranas are summarized. The hymn comprises of eighteen shloka, the first shloka being the mangalacharana (invocation of the goddess) and the last shloka the phala shruti (description of benefits which are attained by the recitation of this hymn.) So the main hymn is of sixteen shlokas and hence the name durgā chandrakalā stuti (hymn to durga like the sixteen states of moon) is given to it by the composer. This hymn is considered very powerful by the practitioners of Shakta and Shaiva tradition – the worship of the mother goddess (the embodiment of all power) because this hymn is the summary of the great and powerful text Devi māhāthmyam of Mārkandeya purāna which is of 700 shlokas and hence also known as durgā saptashatī (seven hundred verses praising durgā) In addition to that Appayya Deekshita also summarizes various glorious incidents about goddess durgā and her manifold forms from various purānas. Hence reciting this hymn daily is equal to remembering all the important glorious deeds of the goddess mentioned in the puranas. The Devi mahatmya and the other anecdotes about the devi given in Varahapurana, Harivamsa, Bhagavata etc., are given in condensed form in this work to be precise. Reciting this hymn with devotion bestows the devotee with protection, wealth, wisdom, courage good fortune and liberation. Today let us chant this hymn and get the blessings of Goddess Durga. In this episode I am once again joined by Dr Ian A. Baker, international fellow of the Explorers Club and the Royal Geographic Society, author of 7 books, and an initiate of Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu Tantric lineages. In this interview Ian recounts a life-changing encounter with a Shakta tantric Siddha in Nepal, who healed Ian of severe climbing injuries and initiated him into the Kaula Tantric order. Ian compares the hitherto secret practices of this sect - such as pranayama, asana, and kundalini techniques - with their Tibetan Tantric equivalents. Ian reveals the surprising reactions of his Tibetan teachers to his initiations into Kaula Tantra, including Chatral Rinpoche and Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, and shares a drinking practice taught to him by his Kaula guru. Ian also discusses Himalayan Beyul, the thin places of the Scottish Highlands, and how a trip to the Isle of Skye brought him into living contact with local Faerie lore. ... The time is finally right for me to interview a life changing interview I had with Esi Wildcat, a somatic healer I have been working with over the past month within her Human Brigade Program. Esi Wildcat is a somatic facilitator, an Ordained Priestess of Isis, a Shakta initiate and yogini in the lineage of Sri Vidya, certified holistic health practitioner, and interdisciplinary healing artist with over 20 years of expertise. She envisions a world where all humans harness the power to intuit and maintain wellness and aliveness in all areas of their lives. Esi is passionate about conversations that create change, as a spaceholder for the primal emotions that often have no place in our contemporary world – grief, rage, despair, anger. As a bridge builder to the New Earth, she is making waves in the cultural somatic realm and is injecting the social justice sphere with much needed humanness and nuance. Esi seeks to highlight the extraordinary in the ordinary – and how the power of presence in our lives can transform not only how we relate to ourselves, but the world around us. Transforming the Energy of the Mind, Shakta Upaya Yoga Nidra In this Yoga Nidra Session we are practicing a technique called "Shakta Upaya", using the power of the mind to transform the mind. This 1000 year old meditation technique comes from the Shaiva Tantra tradition of Kashmir. Shakta Upaya consisted of purifying the mind to replace misaligned stories, patterns, and triggers with aligned ones. Our emotional states are often linked to subconscious thought patterns. In Sanskrit, these thought patterns are called Vikalpas. Vikalpas are the stories, patterns, and triggers we look to overcome. In this Yoga Nidra Immersion session we are using the power of our own mind to overcome our patterns and stories. This turns the mind from outward turning limited filter for experience into an engine for experiencing our own innate energy of divinity. In a sense we use the mind to stop chasing the mind. Coaxing our mind to think pure thoughts that create clusters of neurons in our brains to reframe the mind. We introduce the pure thought "I am a Beautiful & Loving Person" in this Yoga Nidra.  In the Yogic Tradition, Yoga Nidra is known to restore and cool down the body after a Hatha Yoga Session where it activates the nervous system to absorb the physical asanas. It is also known to improve sleep, good for chronic pain, grief, deep relaxation, PTSD, alleviates anxiety, improves depression, lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, heart rate, and developed mental willpower bringing joy and well being to practitioners. Rarely do I listen to an album that I’ve loved every single track of and once on my cd deck it rarely comes off, this is one of them. All tracks are from the album “Walking through” by the Kaya Project. Its missing one track not because it wasn’t any good, because I just couldn’t find a place for it. If you like this mix please buy the Album this man has some serious talent. A bit about who’s behind the Kaya Project. ‘Walking through’, kaya project’s debut cd, is a downtempo fusion of cutting-edge beats… …organic electronica and diverse sounds and vocals from hawaii, india, the middle east and europe. Kaya project is the latest musical incarnation from seb taylor, who has released as shakta, digitalis and is also a co-founder of angel tears. self-taught on the guitar, flute and cello, at age 16 seb heard the album ‘ songs from the victorious city’, a collaboration between anne dudley and jaz coleman (killing joke), and became fascinated with the fusion of middle eastern music and western production.
