===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for January 2nd Publish Date: January 2nd Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, January 2nd and Happy Birthday to Cuba Gooding Jr. I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal No more cars up Kennesaw Mountain, starting January Paychex founder makes historic $50 million gift to Wellstar Meet Aloka, the peace dog winning hearts nationwide during Walk for Peace Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on breads All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: INGLES 2 STORY 1: No more cars up Kennesaw Mountain, starting January Starting this month, private cars will no longer be allowed up Kennesaw Mountain. The park’s steep, winding Mountain Road—famous for its blind curves and 12% grade—has become a safety headache, with too many close calls between cars, cyclists, and hikers. Instead, visitors can reach the summit by shuttle, bike, or on foot. A new pedestrian lane will make the 1.5-mile trek safer for walkers, while the unpaved hiking trail remains untouched. Acting Superintendent Beth Wheeler said the changes address “growing safety concerns” and aim to protect the park’s natural and historic beauty. Road striping starts Jan. 6, with closures lasting through March. STORY 2: Paychex founder makes historic $50 million gift to Wellstar Philanthropist and Paychex founder Tom Golisano just made history with a $50 million gift to Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia (WCHOG), the largest donation in Wellstar’s history. In recognition, the hospital will now be called the Wellstar Golisano Children’s Hospital of Georgia. This isn’t just a check—it’s a game-changer. The hospital is joining the Golisano Children’s Alliance, a network of 12 children’s hospitals across the U.S., opening doors to collaboration, innovation, and shared expertise. It’s the only hospital in the alliance representing Georgia and its neighboring states. The donation will fund projects like a cutting-edge pediatric cardiac ICU, further cementing Wellstar’s reputation for top-tier pediatric care. Other hospitals in the alliance include institutions in Buffalo, Fort Myers, and Hershey, Pa.—all part of Golisano’s mission to improve children’s health nationwide. STORY 3: Meet Aloka, the peace dog winning hearts nationwide during Walk for Peace If you’ve ever seen a serene dog strolling alongside Buddhist monks—sometimes dressed better than the humans—you’ve probably met Aloka, the Peace Dog. Aloka isn’t flashy. He doesn’t bark for attention or demand the spotlight. But somehow, he’s become the quiet soul of the Walk for Peace, embodying everything it stands for. He walks when he can, rides when he’s tired, and never strays from the monks’ side. Once a stray in India, Aloka chose this life. Literally. He started following the monks during a peace walk years ago and never stopped. Now, he’s trekking across the U.S., his calm presence lifting spirits and drawing fans online. Despite the growing attention, Aloka stays grounded. He’s shy with fans, content to rest his paws in the grass or wait patiently for the next step. He doesn’t need words or signs to make his point. Aloka just shows up, step after step, proving that quiet compassion can be the loudest message of all. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 2 STORY 4: Duo Arpeggione to perform Jan. 11 at St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in Marietta (571 Holt Road) is hosting something special: a performance by the world-renowned Duo Arpeggione as part of its Friends of Music series. Mark your calendar—Sunday, Jan. 11, at 3 p.m., in the church sanctuary. Duo Arpeggione, formed in 2017, brings together pianist Catherine Lan and cellist Claudio Jaffe. Their program, “Romantic Resonance,” promises a journey through the evolution of piano and cello music, from Beethoven’s refined elegance to the fiery, nationalistic flair of Cassadó and Chopin. Admission is free—donations welcome. Seating is first-come, first-served. Questions? Call 770-971-2839 or email stcats@stcatherines.org. STORY 5: Sprayberry comes back to upend Sandy Creek Down 12 in the second half against three-time defending state champs Sandy Creek, Sprayberry’s boys basketball team could’ve folded. But they didn’t. Instead, they clawed their way back for a gritty 50-45 win Monday at the Lemon Street Classic. Sandy Creek (6-2) brought the heat early, showing why they’re one of the toughest defensive teams around. Sprayberry (9-3) struggled to find rhythm, trailing 26-18 at halftime. Nate McDaniel sparked an 11-2 run in the third, hitting a three and sinking free throws to pull Sprayberry within three. McDaniel, who’s been part of the program since he was a kid, finished with 16 points, 10 in the second half. The Yellow Jackets opened the fourth with eight straight points, taking a 39-34 lead. Sandy Creek fought back, briefly reclaiming the lead at 42-41, but McDaniel’s clutch three-point play and a layup from Christian Bass sealed the deal. ANTHONY JOSHUA: The boxing world is reeling after a tragic car crash near Lagos on Monday left Anthony Joshua injured and claimed the lives of two of his closest friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champ and Olympic gold medalist, is recovering in stable condition, his promoter confirmed. But the loss of Ghami, his strength coach, and Ayodele, a trainer, has left a deep void. Just hours before the crash, Joshua and Ayodele had shared a lighthearted moment on social media, playing table tennis together. Tributes poured in from the boxing community. Tyson Fury called it “heartbreaking,” while Chris Eubank Jr. remembered Ghami and Ayodele as “genuinely good men.” Shannon Courtenay urged fans to keep Joshua in their prayers, adding, “No one should have to witness what he did.” The crash is a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for giants like Joshua. Break 1: Sugar Hill Ice Skating Rink STORY 1: Meet Aloka, the peace dog winning hearts nationwide during Walk for Peace If you’ve ever seen a serene dog strolling alongside Buddhist monks—sometimes dressed better than the humans—you’ve probably met Aloka, the Peace Dog. Aloka isn’t flashy. He doesn’t bark for attention or demand the spotlight. But somehow, he’s become the quiet soul of the Walk for Peace, embodying everything it stands for. Aloka just shows up, step after step, proving that quiet compassion can be the loudest message of all. STORY 2: Gwinnettians urged to 'treecycle' their live Christmas trees Christmas 2025 is officially in the rearview mirror, and if you went with a live tree this year, you’re probably staring at it now, wondering, “What the heck do I do with this thing?” Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful has your answer: “Treecycle” it. Yep, their annual Bring One for the Chipper program is back, and they’re asking families to drop off their used live trees at participating fire stations by Jan. 21, 2026. The trees will be chipped into mulch for parks and public spaces—because why let a perfectly good tree go to waste? The big chipping event happens Jan. 24 at Bethesda Park in Lawrenceville, and volunteers are needed. Want to help? You’ve got to be at least 14, and you can sign up through Volunteer Gwinnett. Oh, and a quick heads-up: no lights, tinsel, ornaments, or stands—just the tree, bare and ready for its second act. Questions? Call 770-822-5187 or email gwinnettcb@gwinnettcb.org. STORY 3: $100K in Pokémon cards stolen from Carrollton shop Christmas Eve took a sour turn for Tag Collects, a local trading card shop, when a thief smashed their way in and made off with over $100,000 in rare Pokémon cards and sealed merchandise. Co-owner Tommy Brown got the alert early that morning—someone had hurled a tow hitch ball through the front door. In under two minutes, the thief grabbed rare gems like the coveted Umbreon “Moonbreon” card (worth $3,000) and Gold Star Rayquazas, valued at $14,000 combined. Sealed boxes, some worth up to $12,000 each, were also taken. The store has launched a GoFundMe to cover repairs and payroll, while Carrollton police are asking anyone with tips to come forward. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Kia Mall of Georgia STORY 4: Is New Year's Day a federal holiday? Here's what's open and closed The first day of 2026 is here, and while it’s a holiday for many, it might throw a wrench in your plans if you’re trying to run errands or grab last-minute essentials. Here’s the deal: Walmart? Open. Target? Open. Costco? Nope, closed. Same for Aldi and Trader Joe’s. Whole Foods? Modified hours. CVS and Walgreens? Open, but check for reduced pharmacy hours. Mail? Forget it—USPS, UPS, and FedEx are all taking the day off. Banks and government offices? Closed too. Moral of the story? Plan ahead. STORY 5: Wesleyan Grad Eva Garabadian Earns Auburn Basketball Spot in Open Tryout Eva Garabadian thought basketball was behind her. Done. She’d moved on. A former three-sport star at Wesleyan—basketball, lacrosse, softball—she started her college hoops career at Georgia College and State University, a Division II school. One season, 16 games off the bench. Then she transferred to Auburn, not for sports, but for life. Basketball? That chapter was closed. She played pickup games, joined Auburn’s club lacrosse team, and settled into her new normal. Until October. A random Instagram post about walk-on tryouts flipped everything. Two weeks later, she was at Neville Arena, trying out. No nerves, just drills she’d done a hundred times. Worst case? She’d go back to her regular life. Best case? A dream she thought was over might come back. And it did. A text from Auburn’s new head coach, Larry Vickers, sealed it: she made the team. Now, she’s an SEC basketball player. From Division II to SEC, from thinking it was over to living the dream again—Eva’s story is proof that sometimes, life gives you a second chance when you least expect it. FALCONS: The Falcons’ season, a rollercoaster of confusion and chaos, somehow got even weirder Monday night. Already eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago, Atlanta (7-9) pulled off a dramatic 27-24 win over the Rams, their third straight victory in a season that’s been equal parts frustrating and baffling. Zane Gonzalez nailed a 51-yard field goal with 21 seconds left, capping a game where Atlanta blew a 21-point lead but still managed to hang on. It’s been that kind of year—beating Super Bowl contenders like Buffalo and L.A., but losing to teams like the Jets and Panthers. Go figure. Bijan Robinson was unstoppable, racking up 195 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and a highlight-reel 93-yard run that left jaws on the floor. Rookie safety Xavier Watts continued his breakout season with two interceptions, tying Deion Sanders’ rookie record for Atlanta. But let’s not sugarcoat it—this season’s been a mess. Special teams? A disaster, with yet another blocked field goal returned for a touchdown. The Cousins signing? A head-scratcher. And yet, somehow, the Falcons are ending the year on a high note, showing flashes of the potential fans expected back in August. For now, though, they’ll be watching the playoffs from the couch—again. A group of Buddhist monks traveling on foot across the United States passed through Alabama last week as part of a months-long journey promoting peace, compassion and understanding. About two-dozen monks are undertaking a 2,300-mile walk from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C. Their journey began Oct. 26 and is scheduled to conclude Feb. 13 at the U.S. Capitol. After more than 50 days and roughly 1,000 miles on the road, the group entered Alabama on Dec. 16 accompanied by a dog named Aloka. According to the monks, the night marked the coldest temperatures they have faced so far during...Article Link

Conversation between Dr. Aloka Nanjappa, Salil Chowdhury'd daughter.

Ever pondered how societal factors, not just medical ones, could significantly influence breastfeeding patterns? Dr. Aloka Patel joins us for an eye-opening dialogue pinpointing racial disparities in breastfeeding, especially in NICU scenarios. With her profound knowledge and passion, she makes us comprehend how educating staff, consistent communication about the sundry benefits of breastmilk, and ensuring resource availability could remarkably enhance the breastfeeding culture. This episode will take you through an emotional voyage as we uncover the struggles faced by mothers striving to produce sufficient milk for their infants. The spotlight is thrown on the disparities between Black and White mothers. Listen to Dr. Patel's riveting narratives about the innovative interventions on the anvil to alleviate the burden of providing breast milk. From offering breast pumps, milk couriers to compensating mothers for their time and milk, these strategies promise to revolutionize the experience of breastfeeding. The anecdotes from Dr. Patel's life underscore her dedication to reducing obstacles to breastfeeding. In a key segment of our discussion, we touch upon our societal tardiness in initiating dialogues about breastfeeding. Hear about an innovative pilot project in Chicago schools aimed at demystifying breastfeeding. The project engaging boys and girls in the fifth grade has received an overwhelmingly positive response. Our conversation isn't complete without emphasizing the significant role of advocacy work and neonatologists in community outreach. So, lend us your ears and join us in the journey to normalize breastfeeding. As always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. You can also contact the show through Instagram or Twitter, @nicupodcast. Or contact Ben and Daphna directly via their Twitter profiles: @drnicu and @doctordaphnamd.
Data analyst by day, DJ by night, 27 year-old Cairene, Kareem Tarek, is a travelled man. Having started spinning as a member of two-man band, YK Jelly, Tarek went on to secure residencies at several Cairo spots, initially playing groove and UK garage. He really came into his own, however, when he started experimenting and his exclusive Select set for SceneNoise offers plenty of proof of that. “The set is about exploring space,” Tarek told SceneNoise of a mix that brings together acid, breakbeat, Iceelnadic techno, destroy tech and many more weird and wonderful sounds. “It’s about communication with extraterrestrials with music - like having a dialogue.” We were going to sit back and enjoy the set - but this is a voyage into a twisted abyss of music, one featuring tracks from the likes of Hearthug, Briki, Aloka, Hermeth and more. Sitting back and relaxing isn’t the thing to do.

As promised, from EP002 the second half of the show will feature a guest mix. For EP002 Cyprusian has invited Kaidun and April, residents and founders of E Chorus Uk, a techno night in Leeds UK. They have curated a set using vinyl and digital techno, breaks and electro tracks. Their party focuses on showcasing the UK’s most exciting techno talent, making the most out of the city’s intimate clubs & spaces. Previous guests include Yant (SKeleven) and Stevie Cox (Sub Club), two up and coming artists that represent the diverse Chorus sound. In 2021 Chorus has a plethora of UK talent locked in for Q3-4 to be announced later this year. April is the pseudonym of Leeds based DJ & Promoter, Ben Moulson. Often claiming he was born “20 years too late”, April’s taste lays within the ‘glory days’ of techno, with a heavy focus on early 2000’s hard-groove. April curate’s his sets with a contrast of the old-school and the new, combining fast and funky grooves, with gritty textures and uplifting melodies. Kaidun is a 21 year old artist from the north-west who DJ’s & produces a wide range of dance music. In this mix, he alternates between some of his favourite techno & electro records from the likes of Hadone, Aloka & his all time favourite, Robert Hood, with plenty of groove throughout. Lumière (français), Lux (latin), Light (anglais), Licht (allemand), Luz (espagnol), Luce (italien), Lumina (roumain), Isik (turque) , Svet (russe), Leukos (grecque), Aloka (sanskrit)

The sure fire way into our hearts is with ghetto tech. High Fidelity makes his Local Selection mix debut, with a blistering hour of electro and ghetto tech to soundtrack your Wednesday afternoon. High Fidelity, aka Robert Stapleton, is a familiar face within the Irish club scene. With icons such as Jensen Interceptor, DeFeKT and Aloka as his idols, Robert’s abstract electro and techno productions hugely complement the fast-paced energy found in his live sets. A host of club and festival appearances across the Emerald Isle, including Life Festival and Higher Vision, has provided a platform to propel his distinctive performances to a wider audience. As his production catalogue continues to grow, propelled by new releases with Wachita China’s 'WC Fast Music' label and Edinburgh based label 'Milkit', with his latest delivery ‘Unknown Entity’ released on the 5th of February with Irish label 'Choki Biki'. The track features as part of the 6 track various artists album entitled Breaks for Days Vol. 1, which includes fantastic contributions from an all Irish roster of artists and aims to celebrate the versatility of breaks. With a back catalogue of scheduled releases, remixes, and featured mixes all ahead of him, it's safe to say 2021 is looking like one to remember, however, right now, it's his Local Selection mix, as High Fidelity takes the controls for the afternoon. Expect a huge serving of electro and ghetto tech, as High Fidelity provides us with one hell of an hour, featuring tracks from the likes of False Persona, DJ Sickfuck, Amadezzy, 7uka, YTP, Marcus32x and Raw Takes to name a few. Today on The Chaise Lounge podcast, host Nick May catches up with his good friend and fellow cheerleader for the interior design trade, Amy Flurry. For listeners who have not yet met this multitalented Athens, Georgia-based communications specialist, allow us to introduce you: Amy is an editor/brand consultant/author/speaker/artist/founder and publisher of her own to-the-design-trade magazine, as well as a partner in Aloka, a new, sustainably produced home-textile design company with its home base in the Cisco showroom, in High Point, North Carolina. Today in the Lounge, Nick focuses on Amy's role as a trusted media design brand advisor and communications pro, who helps designers understand what “getting press” looks like now. Creativity, Communications, Collaboration and Commerce: Navigating the New Media Frontier Amy was one of the first design industry insiders to encourage design entrepreneurs to take their creative business's success into their own hands via DIY PR. In fact, she wrote the book about it: After more than a decade of sitting on the editorial side of the fashion/design/art and culture desk, Amy released her first book, Recipe for Press, in 2011, and followed up with a book especially for designers, Recipe for Press: Designer Edition, in 2018. A lot has changed since then. “We've expanded and we have all these new tools,” says Amy, pointing to print publications, online pinboards, multiple social media platforms, digital magazines, newsletters, video, and on and on and on. “But now, people are going to see it contract. And they're going to use these tools in a very focused way. We're going to get choosy about what we listen to.” How to Get Your Interior Design Business Noticed Now The way we connect creativity and commerce continues to evolve, says Amy, and it pays to keep pace with all the new ways to communicate your story. The fundamentals have not changed: Relationships Good photography A focused idea Being quick to respond to media requests And having the discipline to follow up and stay on message “There are different models now. Everybody's an expert and everything, but how much of that will last?” asks Amy. “The things that will last will be the things that people really put the that time, heart, and creativity in to be truly engaging. Otherwise we keep deleting.” Who, What, Where, When, and WHY? Whose Influence Really Matters? Let's face it: We're all getting a little tired of looking at screens all day. We're all being bombarded with emails, Instagram posts, and irrelevant-to-us Stories. And lots of them never get a second look or listen, no less a personal response. That's one reason why a personal note, postcard, or a DM targeted to the right person can be more powerful. Amy Flurry's staff at Recipe for Press spends months preparing, checking, and double-checking the author's annual media list (updated twice a year), to make sure the contact information she provides is current and relevant in the rapidly changing interior design landscape. New to the list, the increasingly influential podcasts, including our own podcast host and producer Nick May, whose iMay Media brand was one of the first to celebrate the work lives of successful interior designers, painting contractors, manufacturers, editors, and industry allies whose stories inspire designers to take control of their media identity. “Where else can you share and tell your story and have people's undivided attention?” Amy asks. “With the interview, you have an opportunity to deepen that relationship and start collaborating. That's the nature of communications right now. If you really are conscious about this, you've probably met enough people to find a lot of common work together. And you realize, ‘Maybe I can do more with the relationships I already have.'” We're all in business, Amy reminds us: “Connecting your story to commerce has to be done very intentionally.” What Hasn't Changed

Time for another talk from Vajradarshini. More poetry, more Rumi, more listening joy. Actually, we just liked the title so much we had to go for it this month – but, in fact, it’s another splendid journey around the idea of Enlightenment, using the languages of surrender and discipline from the Sufi context. It’s as heady as a sumptuous wine, but also sobering and down to earth, whether we’re “following a railing in the dark” or walking lost “inside the red world”. Drink up! Talk given at Taraloka Retreat Centre, 2005 Contents 01 Starting with a poem by Rumi – not a ‘sensible’ talk 02 ‘Enlightenment’; following a railing in the dark; wine in Rumi’s poetry; the Dharma as studying the self; surrender and discipline 03 The Tavern – pushing off for Truth; ‘managing’ samsara and settling down 04 Fermentation; being cooked – slowly 05 How we are cups; two ways we limit ourselves – i. literalism; a quote from Aloka – abandoning ideas of what the ‘path’ is 06 Sangharakshita on literalism and craving; effective Going for Refuge and giving up limited ideas; the antidote to beauty 07 ii. Utilitarianism; Sangharakshita’s idea of the Greater Mandala of Uselessness; literal takes on aesthetics; breaking the cups 08 Pushing off into truth; kinds of connection with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas; Reality and form and emptiness; visualistaion practice and life – things arising and disolving 09 ‘Fana’ and ‘baka’ in Rumi’s poetry – two streamings across the doorsill; Shams-e-Tabrizi – Rumi’s teacher 10 The importance of reflecting on form and emptiness; the eight-point mind training – taking all obstacles with you on the path; the Bodhisattva Ideal from the perspective of emptiness; spiritual practice in a world neither real nor illusory 11 Pema Chodron on how to avoid burn-out; shunyata and unrealistic ideals; a quote by Dennis Potter near to death; the trivial and the important; birdsong 12 Hsuan-Tsang’s ‘trusting mind’; introducing the dirt we buy to the dirt we already have To help us keep this free, please think about making a donation.
