Skimpflation, refers to consumers now proactively skimping on services, subscriptions, and purchases they otherwise would've made without issue. Retailers and businesses in general are going to bear the brunt of these cuts.

Have you noticed chocolate bars getting smaller, crisps bags pumped with air to bulk them out and then you get the corporate cold shoulder when you try to complain? You're a victim of skimpflation.Economists class skimpflation as unlike regular inflation where you pay more for the same good and services, but instead you pay the same for something that's worse quality or wait longer for it.So that shirt that rips in the washing machine on the first wash, or that teeny tiny chocolate bar - will it ever end, and how can we stop getting ripped off?And as inflation roars upwards, the Institute of Customer Service says customer service complaints are at a record high - and it's quality, reliability and availability of goods and services that top people's list of irritants. As inflation rockets, with the supply chain still suffering Covid fallout, how can we get a better deal? The Leader's joined by Professor Heather McGregor, executive dean of the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University, and formerly star of the Channel 4 show SuperScrimpers, under her nom de plume Mrs Moneypenny.Listen to Professor McGregor's top tips to get the value for money and how to reclaim your consumer rights. All across the globe we are seeing a massive increase in prices and reduction in quality. In fact it's so prevalent, it has a few nicknames. Shrinkflation and Skimpflation are two practices of reducing the quality of goods and services to maintain margin, and reducing the actual contents of goods and quality of services while increasing the cost. Customers have noticed the change in gas prices, groceries and now even our toys. If you are a new entrepreneur, inventor, or toy maker you may think that Shrinkflation doesn't affect you, but you'd be wrong my friend, it certainly does! When a company performs a cost reduction exercise under a normal economic climate, they take a look at their product and make small, simple changes. The goal is typically to reduce cost without affecting overall aesthetic or playability. But when companies have to make up for 10% or more in lost margin, there's no way around affecting the size and sometimes the quality of a product. A lower margin industry wide, and changing consumer expectations is something you could stay acutely aware of over the next year.As an inventor these monetary changes could affect the categories you focus on and as an entrepreneur or maker, it can affect the amount of components you need for your toy or game to stay competitive. If you want to maintain a cash-positive toy business you've got to look at the bottom line, and that means adjusting when margin and revenue take an unfortunate tumble.MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:For the links and resources mentioned in this episode, head over to the episode page at www.thetoycoach.com/124

the u.s economy a spiral downfall to the dark abyss
We're back with a brand new show! In every episode we will discuss three things of interest. Something useful, Something funny & Something useless. Expect the format to change a bit as we're still feeling our way around. It will be unedited, unscripted and potentially boring. However, it will always be honest, insightful and hopefully entertaining at times.
Melv and Lew begin by catching up on a number of things that occurred over the past two weeks. We then dive into our spotlight segment where we highlight skimpflation and the Santa Clause shortage. Next we take listener questions and transition into hot corner/chopping block. Finally, The Big Dog gives his final thoughts.
There are options available don't be stuck by fear. Inflation hit a 30 year high where consumer had more demand (and money) than goods so prices increased. The Fed tries to keep it around 2% with consumers finally having more money and supply chains struggling, this was not a surprise. Unemployment is also at record lows (4.6 verse 6.9 last year). This is despite vaccine mandates and record numbers of resignations. Remember the shrink ray and the stealthy reduction in product size? Well skimpflation is a service cutback that can cause consumer headaches like longer lines, fewer options and increased daily inconveniences. Not only does this impact us as consumers, it affects how we do our job because we are expected to do more with less.
There's a new word in inflation since the pandemic started. It's called "Skimpflation." Companies are "skimping" on the quality or products and services. In this episode, Frank and Nick discuss the quality of their financial services. There's no "skimpflation" here.
In this episode Art and Luke cover inflation, mealflation, shrinkflation and now, skimpflation? Is this a real threat to our retirement plans and furthermore, is there a way to prepare for it? Plus, the importance of the first meeting with The McPherson Financial Group and the homework required. Finally, we've talked about End Of Year Financial Planning, but what about End of Year Insurance Planning? For more information on The McPherson Financial Group or to schedule a consultation, visit www.artofmoneyradio.com

NPR reported economist Alan Cole's concept of Skimpflation - the idea that consumers are receiving less value for their dollar because businesses are reducing quality of goods and services while maintaining prices. So instead of pricing going up (inflation), quality is being reduced. We can see this all around us in longer wait times, fewer goods on shelves, lower quality packaging, and smaller quantities. For most large businesses, it's far simpler to reduce the amount of rice in a box by 8% than it is to increase the price of the box by 8%. But small reductions in quality for a brand are like moths to a sweater. Small hole after small hole after small hole and eventually the sweater disintegrates. If you're Amazon or 3M or Walmart and you have a bazillion sweaters, you will survive. If you're a small business, it's likely that you wouldn't. Listen in as Michelle and JoyGenea discuss Skimpflation and the opportunities it creates for small businesses to message their story of quality to their customers and clients.

Now, rapper Travis Scott and festival organizers are facing multiple lawsuits — we're live in Houston. Plus, as of today, U.S. borders are re-open to travelers from nearly three-dozen countries as long as they are fully-vaccinated. Also ahead, is quality customer service becoming a thing of the past? It's called “skimpflation,” and it's causing longer wait times, fewer options, unhappy customers and more as businesses cut costs.

This week we vent a little about races that simply do not cut the mustard with us - when races skimp on the basics and still charge full prices - we get a little testy. We catch each up on how our training is going one month out from race day, as well as reveal some of our mental glitches that don't really serve us and how we train ourselves to think better thoughts. Oh! And we discuss “very normal” cool mom Gwen Jorgensen and her training in Boulder. We cover a lot in this one so buckle up, FastFolks!

You've likely noticed that we're in a period of inflation, and that's because rising prices are difficult to ignore (hey there, gasoline!). But what about nonexistent customer service, smaller food packages, and the nagging, overall sense that we as consumers are getting the bad end the deal every time we make a purchase? That, my friends, is skimpflation. When you start looking for skimpflation in real life you'll see it everywhere. On today's show I'm uncovering the sneaky tactics brands use to maintain their bottom line at the expense of consumers; I'm also suggesting 3 action steps for us, the little guys and gals, during periods of inflation. Here's a preview:[1:45] An inflation review: What it is and how it affects you and me[4:20] Greedflation: Why some mega corps jack up prices (and reap increased profits)[10:00] Sneaky and stealthy skimpflation examples[13:00] Is this really "family size"?
