14:52 Zuletzt gespielt: Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes (Demo), Slay the Spire 2 (feat. SISTERHOOD OF SWEAT - Motivation, Inspiration, Health, Wealth, Fitness, Authenticity, Confidence and Empowerment

In this episode of The Sisterhood of Sweat, we sit down with conversation expert and storyteller Kalina Silverman, the creator of the global movement Make Big Talk and author of the new book Big Talk: How to Skip the Small Talk, Make Meaningful Connections, and Enrich Your Life. Kalina's journey started with something many people quietly experience—loneliness. While away at college, she realized she was surrounded by people yet still struggling to form meaningful friendships. Instead of accepting surface-level conversations, she began asking deeper questions that moved past small talk and opened the door to real connection. That experiment turned into a viral video series and eventually a global movement encouraging people to ask better questions and build deeper relationships. Today, Make Big Talk events and conversations are happening around the world, helping people connect in a more authentic and human way. Kalina's work also took on a powerful new dimension in 2025 when she partnered with GoFundMe to highlight survivors of devastating Los Angeles wildfires. Traveling to burned neighborhoods and damaged homes, she asked one simple but powerful question: What did you lose? The emotional conversations that followed introduced the world to survivors like Walt, Willie, and Dorothy. These raw, human stories spread across social media, generating millions of views and helping raise more than $2 million in donations for recovery efforts. The project earned Kalina a Shorty Impact Award for Emergency Relief storytelling. With the release of her new book Big Talk, Kalina is helping people learn how to move beyond surface-level conversations and create deeper connections in friendships, relationships, work, and everyday life. Her work has attracted the attention of some of the biggest names in media, including Maria Shriver, Anderson Cooper, and Katie Couric, who are all fans of her work and the powerful impact of meaningful conversation. In this conversation, we explore why small talk often leaves people feeling disconnected, how asking better questions can transform relationships, and why authentic storytelling can create real change in communities. What we discuss in this episode: • Why small talk often keeps people feeling isolated • How one question can unlock meaningful connection • The moment Kalina realized deeper conversations change lives • How Make Big Talk grew from a college idea into a global movement • The emotional wildfire survivor stories that helped raise millions in relief • Why meaningful conversations are more important than ever in a digital world • Practical ways to connect with anyone—even if you're shy or socially anxious Kalina's work reminds us that connection isn't about saying the perfect thing. It's about creating space for honesty, curiosity, and empathy. If you've ever struggled with awkward conversations, felt lonely in a crowd, or wished relationships felt deeper and more meaningful, this episode will completely change how you think about talking to people. Mascara is over. Yes, it’s joined side parts as beauty cringe, according to the ghost lashes trend that Em Vernem has embraced. We’re unpacking: Are bare eyes cool or do they leave some of us looking like 'elderly babies'? Plus, the fear of public speaking has morphed into something else: the fear of speaking in public, full stop. So why is small talk dying, and does it matter? We’re asking: Is a quick chat about the weather actually the secret to a happier life? And, meet the internet’s new favorite literal girlboss — a 13-year-old skincare CEO who edits her COO mom’s 'cringe' captions. While Em feels like a failure by comparison, Holly Wainwright is fascinated by the 'corporatisation of kids' and brand-building curriculums. But is it smart? In an AI world, has 'building a business' become more important than actually knowing things? In other business, Clare Stephens wants to know why the word 'matrescence' isn't in the dictionary yet? And, of course, recommendations: Holly recommends The Walkers podcast by Tortoise Media & The Observer — a wild investigation into the author of The Salt Path. We all have stories worth telling. Yet most of us decide ours aren’t interesting enough, important enough, or universal enough to share. In this episode, I’m joined by Daniel Coyle to explore why that instinct is usually wrong. Daniel is the bestselling author of The Talent Code, The Culture Code, and his latest book Flourish. Together, we unpack how Daniel finds and constructs stories that truly pull people in, including the ingredients that make a story compelling and the simple techniques anyone can use to tell better stories. We also dive into the small, powerful questions that move conversations beyond surface-level small talk, how to build genuine local community through what Daniel calls “yellow doors”, what leaders can learn from a makeshift building at MIT that became an innovation hotspot, and why change so often feels slow before it suddenly blooms. If you care about deeper connection, stronger culture, and asking better questions, this conversation will give you plenty to think about. Daniel and I discuss: The simple structure behind every compelling story Why great stories begin with a question and how to construct tension and mystery How to “sandpaper” your stories by removing everything that isn’t essential The reflective practice Daniel uses to zoom out and see the shape of his life The specific questions that deepen connection How to build local community through small habits, daily encounters, and noticing “yellow doors” Why annoyance is the price of community The difference between complicated and complex systems, and why that matters for navigating change What leaders can learn from Building 20 at MIT about agency and the “rule of the beautiful mess” Why change often happens slowly, then in a surprising bloom A simple 30-second “council” exercise to reconnect with meaning Key quotes “Annoyance is the price of community.” “Life is not a productivity contest. It’s a moments thing.” Connect with Daniel Coyle on X (Twitter), and LinkedIn and his website, and check out his latest book Flourish. My latest book The Health Habit is out now. To test the theory on the 'hangover', Josh has kindly let me host a special Small Talk edition of the Vulnerabitea house with him. If you're wondering what the Vulnerability Hangover is - it's that wave of shame, regret and “why did I say that?” that hits after you take an emotional risk. We unpack why being vulnerable feels so much worse from the inside than it looks from the outside, why men in particular are often taught to shut it down, and whether in the age of TikTok tell-alls and authenticity, vulnerability has become expected content.
